First and Foremost, this is 100% without a doubt the best tube amp repair shop in and around Sacramento if not in all of Northern California. The service is amazing and Shane is a literal encyclopedia of knowledge. This isn't your average guitar shop though, so don't come into the situation expecting this to be guitar center. It's much better, but you have to have the time to understand why. Shane is meticulous with his work and is as honest as they come! So I have to say his Value is as high as they come. His shop has a massive selection of parts you would need for any of your amps problems, and I doubt there's anything he wouldn't be able to fix. He has all the credentials. I am sorry to say that I am completely frustrated. After helping me several times in the past, I brought him an 18 Watt amp that seemed to have a fixable problem. He had the amp for 2 months without even looking at it. Every time I called him he said he would have it finished by the end of the day, then a week would go by and he never called so I would call and get the same spiel. I brought my Mesa Dual Rec to him a few years ago because he was the only authorized Mesa tech in the area - the issue was very minor, just a problem with channel switching. Well, homeboy for some reason decided to leave my amplifier on ALL DAY while being fed an audio signal, with the volume cranked to max, as some sort of diagnostic... he readily admitted this later on. not sure what he was trying to test, but what he didn't tell me was that FOR SOME REASON he put the bias switch on the EL34 setting, when I was running 6L6's!! This is a rookie mistake in the worst sense, as it's literally written on the back of the amp that you shouldn't do this... He must have not actually checked the amp after this, because he handed it back to me and charged me full price for a diagnostic that deduced... absolutely nothing. I get my amp home and try it out, and now I barely even HAVE a clean channel, the signal is down to nothing and sounds like marbles in a trash can, and gets worse by the second. I try to get in touch with him, but COULD NOT. It took him two and a half weeks to get back to me. By that time I had taken it to the Mesa headquarters, they had repaired it, and I had to rent an amp for the show I was trying to get mine in shape for. The repairs by actual Mesa techs cost me $240, and the rental was slightly over $100. Mesa told me he had set the bias so absurdly hot for so long that a BUNCH of stuff had come unsoldered on the inside. Unbelievable. I'm lucky he didn't burn out the output transformer!! When he finally did get in touch with me, he did apologize and refund me the money I'd paid for the diagnostic, but I consider this bare minimum for common decency considering the $350 and massive headache his negligence and incompetence had cost me, not to mention the fact that the diagnostic was useless. Looking at other reviews, it seems this guy gets it right sometimes, and I'm glad this hasn't been everyone's experience. I will also say that he was friendly to work with. But this doesn't count for anything when his work causes more problems than it solves a significant portion of the time. No clue why this guy is still authorized by Mesa. Not worth the risk, take your amp to Petaluma to the people who made it, it's worth the extra drive time. read more

This business is a joke. Shane charged me $160 just for a power tube change. He never fixed the overheating problem on my Twin Reverb, nor did he bias the tubes which I asked him to do. My new amp tech told me my tubes weren't biased. They were set lower than factory settings. Shane told me he biased them at 55 MA and they were at 26 MA. Plus he charges more an hour than anyone else. When you call to check on your equipment because there is Zero communication, zero work done, and zero integrity. read more

I just wanted to take a minute to leave a very positive review for Tubesonic audio. Shane really specializes in guitar and bass amps. I had a tube-based stereo amp that developed a loud hum in one channel and he agreed to take a look at it. When you meet him you learn quickly that he's very knowledgeable and has lots of experience. I left my amp with him, he took it apart, did some troubleshooting, figured out it needed some new capacitors, ordered them up and did a great job of repairing it. It's super quiet now, no hum, no circuit noise. Shane left it running in his shop for a couple days before calling me just to make sure. The amp was built by my father-in-law who passed away a few years ago. He was quite an audiophile and used very good parts. But, parts from the 80s eventually fail and it needed some work. It's rare to find someone who knows how to work on these amps. So, with that in mind there are a couple things you should know when you go Tubesonic. Because there are so few people who do this it will probably take Shane a while to get to your amp. I think he takes them in order: first come, first served. He told me it would be a few weeks before he got to it and he was right. So, if you're looking for a quick repair he might not be your guy. Good luck finding someone else with the same level of experience. I called him a few times during the process to see how it was going and he always responded by phone. He usually picked it up without me leaving a message. Communicating by email was a little less consistent. So, in summary, if you want things done right and don't mind the job taking a little while Tubesonic is fantastic. read more

Gone to Shane a couple of times now. First time was 7-8 years back and he fixed a tube socket grounding issue and retubed my Marshall JCM800 2x12 combo. Most recently he repaired my DSL401 and brought a Jet City combo back to life. He has always been upfront, fair, and honest. Before I brought the DSL401 in he told me of the numerous problems the amp line had had and wanted me to know that it may very well not be worth fixing. I appreciated that. Fortunately I most of had one made on a Wednesday because it wasn't that bad. I find his pricing fair and reasonable, and he is willing to back up his work for 6 months. If you care about your stuff DO NOT GO HERE!! 1. Terrible customer service. He doesn't return calls and is hard to reach. 2. Shane admitted to not paying attention to my amp symptoms when I brought it in and still had the wrong diagnosis on the paper work when I picked it up. 3. When I finally did get it back the issue wasn't completely gone. 4. Then the icing on the cake; he apparently sat other amp heads on my amp and now I have 4 faint footprints and a scuff on the top that will not come off. He may have is brief moments of good work but he apparently cares nothing about your property. My amp was only a couple months old when I took it too him and expected it to be returned in the same pristine condition. read more

Shane is a very knowledgeable person. I took my Marshall JCM2000 TSL100 to him with a problem that even he said he hadn't come across. He had told me about the problems he has experienced with the TSL's and offered me a "dependability" package that pretty much guaranteed I wouldn't see him again with the typical TSL problem. After a couple of days, Shane had told me that after looking at my head, he wouldn't have to do the "dependability" package because I had a newer head and it didn't need all the upgrades. He actually found a couple of bad tubes and replaced a capacitor and gave me a cheaper price than originally quoted. All this being said, Shane didn't try to rip me off, claim he did repairs he didn't do or anything of the sort. In my opinion, he was very honest, upfront and extremely knowledgeable of amplifier repair. I just got home and tested his repairs on my cabinet and the amp is fixed!!! I've owned MESA BOOGIE DUAL RECTIFIERS 2 channel Reversion F's and now Rev. D which is super rare (*serial #R0264 for those in the know) and really thinking at first I should ONLY take my amp to MESA and have Mike work on it (who actually built mine in '92) but I tried Tube Sonic out. Now I'm not a touring rock star but have been playing for 35 years and have to say Shane took my amp that was really f-'d up and made it sound better than any amp I've ever played. I don't lean heavy on what the distortion can put out on this amp but there were serious issues going on which pots, legs of things I forget what the hell they were called but all the power tubes, rectifier tubes as well as a couple pre-amp tubes even some other diodes or whatever had to be all worked on or replaced. I paid the $75 in the door fee (standard anywhere) to look at it which was applied to the end total all that for $375 which anyone who knows amps knows that is a screaming good deal. It took about 3 weeks and of course there were delays after he got into in being the amp was sick and ordering tubes, him speaking with Mike at Mesa (which I really appreciated him doing because who better to talk to than the guy who's signature is on the transformer from '92 who built the amp) and figuring out exactly what the f was going on with this rare amp that is highly sought after by many because its in the first 500. Now, this is the best sounding amp I've ever played and just got off the phone thanking Shane for a job well done and thought I'd leave a review of my honest experience with him who I highly recommend taking the time to try out. To get things right it takes a couple few weeks which if I went to Mesa it would have been months I'm sure. Oh, No amps were set on top of mine. Just referring to another review on here. Shane is quite a resource to the Sacramento music scene for repairing amps. I found him through Bass and Beyond and was blown away that he was able to fix a 1985 Laney 50w tube amp I found in a local pawn shop. It now sounds like the fires of hell! I've owned many classic amps from Marshall 1968 Tremolos and 1973 50w to Orange 1968 60w to Boogie from SOB to Mark III, with many top amp repair people over the years and Shane is a real amp guru and player. He also has a nice selection of tubes, one of which I bought that was an old Mullard 12ax7 that sounds great. Don't expect a shinny showroom, just a good tube repair guy that's real and means well. read more
