I have dined at this restaurant pre-COVID and have done take-out in the COVID era. All experiences have been overall positive. Food is quite delicious and prices are reasonable. Good take-out sushi has been something severely lacking during COVID, and honestly this place is still pretty great. I first ordered in early April, and the pick-up experience was a little bit disorganized. However, Tsui has done a nice job streamlining their delivery experience. Last Friday, we ordered online for pick-up. While the wait was pretty long (1 hour), placing the order was easy and it was ready on-time. Pick up went smoothly, even though we had to pay inside (rather than online) We got miso soup, several sushi rolls, and tempura vegetables. Everything was delicious, fresh, and packed well. Came here a month ago, just got around to reviewing it and I still remember how much this place left a bitter taste in my mouth. We were told they were backed up in the sushi department, but we were quoted a shorter wait time then in actuality. We came in at 7:10pm, ordering Agedashi tofu to tide us over until the sushi came. It came out after 20minutes, but wasn't bad, crispy enough, especially for our starving tummies. The first roll, tuna roll came out at 7:50pm, with the least amount of rice I've seen on sushi I'm wondering if they had a rice shortage. The second roll, spider roll came out at 8:20pm, a full hour after we arrived. It tasted fishy, not fresh at all, and quite definitely not worth the wait. The service was pretty inattentive and unhelpful, not to blame her, she seemed overworked. But to wait more than an hour for mediocre sushi and not even get a few edamame pods or something... I freaking LOVE this place! After my go to sushi place re-opened with some disappointment, I was on the search for a new haunt. This place doesn't disappoint at all! They clearly state what is in each of their rolls and everything I have had there is so good! I have both dined in and ordered to-go, which was super easy through their website and they have always followed special requests for individual rolls. Also, dining in felt as safe as could be with HEPA air filters everywhere. And these weren't just any HEPA air filters, they are quality ones! Please check these guys out if you are near Greenlake, this is a great sushi place to check out and grab some fantastic dishes. My new favorite sushi spot, for sure! My heart hurts a bit to write this review. Before COVID, I would have given it 4 stars and highly encouraged people to come for the happy hour on Sundays. It was delicious and we ate our weight in sushi and sake for about $30/person. I've encountered some issues in the past with delays while paying (the computer is down, etc), but overall not too much to complain about. However, during COVID, I came to support by ordering take-out ahead of time. There is no organization. At least 12 people were waiting outside the restaurant with no clear communication about who was up next or if your order was ready. When I did finally get into the restaurant, you could tell the two servers were stressed. It was obvious there was chaos and they hadn't worked out a flow in terms of getting, filling, and sending out orders. The two servers also didn't make eye contact at all so it was hard to get their attention. When I finally did, 45 minutes after the pick-up time I got through my online order, they found my order and said they hadn't started working on it. Again, I get it. Take-out in this fashion is completely new and is a lot. But come on. At that time, I was starving since it was now 7:45pm and I asked them to cancel the order. During the hour that I had been waiting for my meal, I maybe saw ~5 orders go out. There has got to be a better way to organize this. If I could, I'd recommend they close for a couple days or a week to sort out exactly how they are going to serve more than 5 orders/hour and how they are going to communicate to the customers waiting outside for their orders. I hope things have improved since I went in mid-May, but this was honestly unacceptable. read more

I don't know about you but it seemed like there were no decent sushi restaurants around the Green Lake/Greenwood/U District Neighborhoods open past 9pm. Luckily, Tsui Sushi Bar is open past 9pm and is on my way to work so I just had to check the place out. It turns out this was formally Thurston's Bistro & Lounge. The layout is still similar with a bar in the middle and they added a sushi bar in the back. I sat at the sushi bar and chatted with who turned out to be the owner (Thurston). Here's what I learned over a generous chirashi bowl: * Tsui's opened recently (last week) and he was the owner of Thurston's. * Thurston has teamed up with Billy, who is tied to various sushi restaurants in the city (Japonessa, Umi, Billy Beach to name a few). I have to say that I'm extremely happy he opened up Tsui's because the ambiance, service and food was on point. My chirashi bowl was perfect and reasonably priced ($13). The bowl was packed with sushi rice, sea weed, salmon roe, sweet pickled radishes, tamago, and a variety of fish such as tuna, shrimp, salmon. I thought the fish was just the right portion and melted in your mouth. I'm not a fan of tamago but I really enjoyed the piece in my bowl. It was the perfect meal and really highlights the quality of the fish. The rest of the happy hour menu is decently priced, ranging roughly about $5-$13 per item. I saw her review and I know she's the real deal whip appeal! OK, enough of the songs, let's get down to business... So, Thurston (the owner) was baptized into the restaurant biz from birth. Seriously, he and his Dad were at Tsui the night we visited and they informed us of all the restaurants the family has/had owned throughout the Seattle area, so you know he understands the ups and downs of owning and running a restaurant. As mentioned in previous reviews, this was once Thurston's namesake restaurant/bar, and he paired up with sushi chef, Billy, of Umi, Wasabi Bistro, Japonessa, Billy Beach Sushi fame to open up Tsui Sushi Bar. I love that Thurston spent time talking with his customers, it was cool to see the interaction and it shows he loves his new business venture! First of all, it's Happy Hour all day, everyday! The restaurant itself has a well-stocked bar in the middle, towards the back on the right had side was the sushi bar with seating for about 4 people, it's where Jose-san works his sushi magic, and tables and chairs surrounding the perimeter. There are 2 TV's there playing cool black and white kung-fu movies, now if you're sitting underneath the TVs, then you're SOL, but sitting from the bar it was cool to see those! About the menu and the food. Well, if you've been to any of the above mentioned restaurants, some of the dishes will look and taste familiar. Well, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it. The menu is not extensive, but can only mean that they do things really, really well. Yes, they do have the bad boy roll, and some other rolls, and their rolls are ginormous! We were greeted with a complimentary lightly seasoned and seared tuna from Jose-san, and it was delicious! For food, we ordered the chirashi bowl, sashimi set, salmon skin roll, spicy spider roll, and Reihna's ribs. All were scrumptious! The sashimi and chirashi bowl had fresh, quality cuts of fish, and my hubby kept raving about the rice (that's right, the chirashi bowl rice). The salmon skin roll and the spicy spider roll were a lot larger than we thought and struggled to finish them. And Reihna's ribs, OH MY! It was salty and sweet and savory! Reihna, I don't know you, but I will be your BFF if you give me that recipe! ;) Overall, my hubby and I are ECSTATIC that there's a solid sushi spot in our hood, and within walking distance, too!!! The dishes here are quite a steal especially since it's happy hour all day every day! They have your typical rolls: California, Seattle, bad boy, spicy tuna, etc., but they also have affordable sashimi sets for about $11. Their chirashi is only $13, and it comes with a lot of variety: ikura, salmon, tuna, tamago, etc. I'm definitely ordering that next time. The restaurant used to be Thurston's Bistro, which was owned by the same owners. Thurston is the son, and Tony is the father, while the sister runs/manages Krittika Thai next door! I learned this from Tony himself. Anyway, their chicken karaage and agedashi tofu were my favorite appetizers. I would skip on the kalbi and calamari. They were just meh. The takoyaki wasn't too bad either. We ordered one of everything since we had six people so we got to try everything, and that was our verdict. While this may not be your fancy sushi restaurant, this is definitely a nice addition to the area. They don't have uni here in case you're craving that. And... some of the fish pieces were huge slices, you have to forgive that because the prices are just so good! The fish tasted fresh though so that's always good. My friend was comped her salmon sashimi because they took so long to serve it. I devoured the green tea tempura ice cream also... the ice cream was partially melted when it came out, but still so delicious. New sushi places always make me so excited. Tsui was such a delight to dine at. My partner took me here for my birthday because I told him I was craving sushi. At first I told him I felt like eating at Japonessa but I didn't want to travel all the way there in the cold night. Tsui sushi bar delivered though. The place is on the smaller size but does feature a full bar. All the tables have candles and the place is dim lit. It has a nice romantic feel to it! The best thing about this place is that it's ALWAYS happy hour. You don't have to worry about coming at the right time! The menu is very simple and the prices are so cheap! All the rolls are less than $8 and the sashimi sets flutter around $7-11. Good sushi for a really good price is a combination in heaven! Miso Soup - It's only $1 and you get way more than other places. It's slightly on the saltier side and it seems a bit more bland. I think it could've used a bit more flavor but overall tasted like a lighter miso soup. Takoyaki - The presentation was beautiful and there were six pieces. It was so soft and smooth inside with enough octopus inside it. This was one of the better takoyakis that I've had! Sushi Set "Silver" - Comes with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore and eel. All the pieces are big and fatty. The salmon and eel were my favorite and delicious. These were pretty high quality but it's not the best I've tasted. But for the price it was so worth it! Spider Roll - This comes with four pieces. Each piece is super thick, thicker than normally seen. I think they've could have cut it into five and the pieces would be better. However, the soft shell crab was crisp and tasted just as a spider roll should! Seattle Crunch Roll - This was one of the ones that I think needed the most work. It says that it's tempura fried but I felt like it was barely fried. The roll was not crisp at all, surprisingly it was pretty smooth. The sad thing about this roll was that there was way more rice than salmon. The roll literally tasted like a bundle of seasoned rice with a tiny piece of salmon in the middle. The roll comes with 8 pieces. Bad Boy Roll - This roll was crunchier than the Seattle but it still needed more crunch to it. I felt like this was barely tempura fried either. (Maybe I'm just too used to japonessa' rolls). In a sense, I feel like the frying was a healthier kind of tempura fry. The breading was lighter than usual. The insides to rice ratio was better on this roll. I loved the eel in this roll. This roll comes with 5 pieces. Tempura Ice Cream - This is a definite must have. The pictures make it look way smaller than it really is. It is actually quite a decent amount of ice cream. I've never had fried ice cream before so this was a delight. The bitter/sweet green tea ice cream balanced nicely against the soft fried batter. The sauce on the bottom added such a delicate flavor. The whipped cream is so luscious, light and melts the second it hits your tongue. I enjoyed this dessert so much! Service was spot on. Our server was attentive and super sweet. She always came to check up on how we were doing. Price is super awesome here and for all that we ordered it was less than $50 before tip. Although it had a few flaws here and there I would definitely come back on a day where I'm craving sushi but am not willing to go downtown. However, three months later and nearly 50 Yelp reviews posted, figured majority of all these folks truly enjoyed its current state as Tsui Sushi Bar. Street parking directly in front of the entrance, lucked out on table availability without reservations, and seated by presumably one of the owners or management. Beverages: 2 Jasmine teas ($3 each) Drink up while piping hot - it gets very tannic towards the end Starters: 1 Chicken Karaage with Mixed Greens Salad, Tomatoes and Sesame Dressing ($6) 1 Miso Soup ($1) Both hit the spot. Chicken was especially tender and flavorful. The food was fantastic but the kitchen was slowwwwwwwww and super disorganized. It seemed like They prioritized delivery orders over diners and it was really disappointing. We ordered, three rolls a takoyaki and goyoza and they brought us two rolls. After we finished those rolls, we still had to wait another HOUR for our last roll and it wasn't even a cooked roll. We asked multiple times and when I finally got up and asked again i was told it took 45 min for that roll. No way possible considering our other two rolls were baked rolls and they came out in 5-10 min. I also wouldn't recommend the takoyaki. But for the sushi and the prices this place was excellent!! Had those two not been so awesome, I would've given this place a 2 star for the service. We shouldn't have been here for over two hours trying to keep a baby happy in an otherwise completely empty restaurant, except the long line of delivery orders. In-house diners should be prioritized. I ordered for takeout but saw a huge amount of other orders waiting to be picked up. This is being written based on when dine-in was not yet available, so I can only imagine this place gets some great business. The pick-up process was organized and quick, along with some friendly service. The rolls here were tasty and pricing was decent. Less than $10 for classic rolls and about $15-18 for signature rolls. Among my favorites were the Green Lake and So Good rolls. I also did like the agedashi tofu side dish. Overall, a great choice for sushi if you're in the area. The ambience here seems really fun and lively as it is also a bar. Looking forward to dining in here soon. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I get the concept. I like the menu. The happy hour is reasonably priced. But I just can't get myself to come back to this place. The sushi quality is incredibly inconsistent and there are just so many better sushi restaurants in Seattle. It's like, if I want a chirashi bowl, I'll go to Musashi's or Fremont Bowl. If I want to go out for a happy hour vibe, I'd rather go to Umi Sake House. If I'm looking for an izakaya? Then Suika. I literally cannot think of a reason why I would choose to come here. If the fish was consistently fresh or portioned appropriately, I would give this place another chance since it's at a great location and it has a nice ambience. But unfortunately, fish quality has gone down since they first opened. When Tsui Sushi first opened, they gave generous thick cuts of sashimi for their sashimi set. Then the next few times I ordered it, the cuts were either smaller, thinner or missing a piece... the quality was just not up to par. I've given this place multiple opportunities but it just keeps missing the mark for me. If they went back to serving fresh and thick cuts of fish, I would definitely come back. But although not terrible, the food quality and quantity ends up being just OK. Sushi is my favorite food- so unless quality back to how it used to be, I will not be returning. read more

Maki were really sloppy but actual fresh crab in a California roll is nice. Ordered online, showed up on time. 3 people making sushi. We received the specials menu and were told about them as well. My son and I ordered the White Tiger roll, my hubby and daughter a couple of standard rolls. I liked this place enough, but it's not one of my top sushi spots in the Seattle area. My two friends and I arrived on a Friday around 6:30, and waited 20 minutes or so for a table in the medium sized establishment. There were open spots at the bar but that whole seating situation is not conducive to gossiping I mean chatting when 3 ladies are involved. For drinks I went with the Aladdin sake simply because the bottle is awesome (clearish blue and kind of like a modern genie bottle, I suppose) plus it was a middle tier option. Yum. Honestly my favorite part of the experience. A couple people working at Tsui stopped by to see if I was enjoying the sake. Well yeah it's delicious! And you definitely get pleasantly tipsy after downing a whole bottle hehe. I normally am a roll person but I decided to try some nigiri along with a veggie roll. Tuna is usually a safe bet so I opted for the Maguro Nigiri ($6). Ehh it wasn't the best. If I'm eating raw fish I want it to taste fresh and I want the texture to be on point. It was decent but not delectable. I probably wouldn't order tuna nigiri or sashimi from here again. The Special Vegetable Roll ($12... I think that's what I got) was tastier. The roll was filled with tempura potato and cucumber, and topped with avocado slices, spicy aioli, and a soy glaze. My friend's rolls looked pretty simple and standard. The atmosphere is okay, not trendy and not especially cozy either. Service was alright as well. If someone else wanted to take me out to Tsui for dinner, I would have no complaints, although I prefer a few other spots in the area. Butttt I might have to come back for the sake! P.S. Had a terrible experience here last week. We ordered sushi for pickup in an hour. Received call from them before the pickup time asking where we were. I was already en route to grab it and the bag of food was waiting for me as soon as I got there. However, the food had sat there since we ordered -despite stating we wanted to pickup later. Unfortunately myself and my wife got really sick. We emailed the above to the restaurant but got no response. This food is really good and I have ordered from here many times, however they are very STINGY with their spicy mayo. Every.single.time I have asked for spicy mayo they give you the smallest amount and if you ask for more, same thing, they pour you another small amount which truly doesn't make sense since spicy mayo is not an expensive sauce to make but they might do this because it is free to the customers. I never get this experience at different sushi places and even though I love their food, this type of service really makes me not want to buy there anymore. I went here since I was going to be in the neighborhood and wanted sushi. Making a reservation was easy, but the day of my reservation I received a phone call from the restaurant telling me that it may take 45 minutes to get our food. In this COVID environment, it does take longer due to a reduction in staff but there is also a reduction in customers. So I don't understand why it takes so long to get an order of sushi. The wait staff doesn't seem to have much experience handling customers. When I arrived I informed them I had reservations and they seemed confused as they didn't have it at the greeting station. They found it then took my temperature. I was seated then looked at the menu to order. Around 10 minutes later our server came back to take the drink order. I gave her the drink order and gave her the food order. During the time between the order and the arrival of the food, I saw a lot of people arriving for to go orders. That might be why there is a long wait. The order came and the sushi was pretty good for a neighborhood sushi bar. Decent size fish. Rice was about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. Decent flavor, but a little bit more moisture than it should have had. Wait staff was not very attentive and took a while for her to return. Came in yesterday for dinner with a party of six. We had to wait a long time to be seated because they did not have enough Under 21 seating available. 70% their seating are for Over 21 customers which is inconvenient for families with kids and teenagers. They were playing Christmas music in April which was odd but not a big deal. However, the service was extremely slow and they brought out food out one at a time with about a 5-10 minute wait in between. By the time I received my dish, everyone else was done eating (the people I was eating with even waited for me to receive my dish to begin eating until they realized my dish wasn't coming in anytime soon). There was nothing wrong with the food, but the portion sizes were too small for the price! Although the ribs were tasty, several of the pieces barely had any meat on it! The service was extremely slow and the waitress barely gave us any service. This was especially infuriating because of the mandatory 18% gratuity they made us pay (for a group of six? that's outrageous) !!! Again, the food was not bad. But the service, the portion sizes, and the limited Under 21 seating were a HUGE problem. Everyone in my group expressed displeasure and wished we would've left. Worst and most infuriating service I've ever gotten. Don't come in here if you have kids/teenagers, want quality service, or want to be satisfied by the time you leave. read more

My verdict on the "super good roll" is 5 stars, the roll is made fresh and and the presentation is fantastic. I really wasn't impressed with this place after my friend hyped it up to me. We came for a quick dinner around 7:30pm on a Tuesday, they seemed a little busy and didn't have any open two top tables. The hostess immediately told us she couldn't seat us because they only had 21+ seating available (we are both 30 years old). She still made a point to go talk to the bartender to check our IDs when we were finally seated. My friend is really short, but I could tell that whole interaction was embarrassing and annoying for her. Didn't set a good first impression. From there it didn't get much better. We waited a long time before the bartender took notice of us and got our drink and food orders. She took our food orders and we settled into a bottle of sake, eagerly waiting on 4 rolls because we were HUNGRY. Then we started noticing that people that arrived after us were getting their food before we did. 30 minutes go by, nothing from the bartender. Feeling completely ignored at this point, we tried to get her attention. Nothing. Bar has maybe 5 other people seated, restaurant is starting to empty out now that it's almost 8pm. My friend's first roll came out but then nothing else. Because she is polite, she offered to wait until my food came. Still nothing. People next to us that arrived after we did have already eaten their food and are waiting to pay. My stomach grumbles are getting about 10 decibels louder by the minute. Finally I flag down the bartender and ask her where the rest of our food is. She looks at me confused, and points to the roll on the table. I politely explain we had ordered 3 more rolls. She then looks panicked and scrambled away to go put it in the computer. Very obviously she forgot to put in the rest of our order. Had she been paying attention and not been ignoring us, she might have put two and two together and see that we probably needed more food. When our food finally did come, about 45 minutes after we ordered it and after my friend's roll has been sitting, untouched, for that amount of time - I was even less impressed. The spicy yellowtail tasted funky, not fresh - and was very bland in seasoning and smaller than I expected. Avocado was slimy and it was just not very good. The salmon skin roll was almost inedible. Skin was burnt, tough, sharp pieces jutting out from being cooked to a crisp- almost tasted like jerky or glass. It was awful. When we received our bill I was very disappointed to see that nothing was comped - not our drinks or a roll for making us wait so long and forgetting to put in our order. Their joke "happy hour" prices that were just as expensive as the rest of the menu and added insult the injury. I will not be back. read more

Update during COVID times: Tsui Sushi has always been a staple - it's easy, convenient, and I've always had good experience with the staff. As a small business, they are still working their butts off to make sure your orders are done correctly and within a reasonable time frame. I think they've streamlined their takeout process now, I had my order ready at the timeframe suggested and had no issues with my order like other reviewers had. One thing I do recommend for Takeout: **ORDER FROM THEIR WEBSITE, or CALL IN YOUR ORDER directly** I've had good experience going directly through them, rather than a 3rd party, you also save a few bucks this way. I have found that the 3rd parties tend to inflate the prices... I ordered my usual Spicy Seattle Rolls, Takoyaki and Agedashi Tofu - always delicious, even as takeout! They make sure to pack your agedashi tofu broth separate so you can enjoy the crispy/brothy tofu at home without it getting soggy. Keep it up Tsui, we are rooting for you! Tsui is my favorite neighborhood restaurant. I order takeout once a week on average, and I also take friends here for dining in. The sushi is amazing, the service is friendly and efficient, the prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere and ambiance is just cool. One can sit at the bar and have a beer or cocktail with a few bites or get a table with friends and tuck in for a multi-course dinner. It's a triumph. They are always crowded for a reason. read more
