I've been to Tryst a few times. It is crawling with hipsters and students on their laptops drinking coffee or tea and enjoying one of the many pastry or entree options that Tryst offers. For me, it isn't exactly my scene. They do have a good selection of food as I previous mentioned, and priced reasonable. For some reason I just don't care to venture up here to visit. It wouldn't be my first choice of coffee shops to hang out if I wanted something low key because it does get loud in here and it is always crowded. That's perfectly fine and good for their business. It isn't good for me if I want something more quiet and relaxing. I don't feel relaxed when I come here, and usually coming here is by the request of others -- never my own decision. Another mention should be that people will be here for hours on end, and though the space is fairly large -- finding a table can be difficult since the patrons are stationary for extended periods of time. I will stick to what I know, and avoid here if I can help it. read more

Tryst - noun - an agreement, as between lovers, to meet at a certain time and place. My two true loves, caffeine and alcohol, and I met at this uniquely brilliant spot in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Overwhelmed by the chic backdrop, I found myself ordering what may have been the best Irish Coffee ever mixed by a mortal. An orgy of flavors swirled in my mouth; sugar, booze, cream, booze, coffee and booze. With a drink in hand and a visitor's eye my senses were overwhelmed but not so much so to not notice the venerably cool atmosphere of Tryst. Mixing the great ingredients of a coffee shop, restaurant and bar the lounge offers an expansive selection of good eats from salads and sandwiches to the aforementioned Irish Coffee. The mixed bag of clientele of students and hip thirty-somethings made me feel at home, as if I were nestled in one of my hometown haunts. The free WiFi made me crave for my laptop (or iPod touch) to find other equally cool places in the area and I enviably eyed the many plush sofas and armchairs that were occupied, probably for many hours, by local patrons and regulars. This is a home away from home.. with less kittens and more cougars. As an adult, Tryst is one of the only two places worth hanging out in Adams Morgan. (Read all my reviews to find out the other place, I recommend). Walking in I never expected to like a coffee shop, as I don't drink coffee and really don't like tea much...unless it's with alcohol. But the atmosphere is so laid back and chill, you have no choice but to enjoy. This is apparent by the multiple patrons that lounge on the couch for hours sipping water and surfing the 'net. Grrrrrrr... My first visit was full of gluttony. Even though I just came from lunch, I ate the Almond Croissant, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, and Tuscan Quesadilla. Yep, I was THAT girl. I didn't regret it one bit. Everything was really good. In addition, I sipped on the Spiced Hot Toddy that is served with Ginger Snaps! Oh snap! This immediately took me back to my childhood. Not the hot toddy, but the ginger snaps. The place is lined with photographs of the original owners and art work from local artists. Simple but relevant. Definitely a good place to meet someone on a first date, I think. Especially if you're worried about getting kidnapped and disappearing from the face of the earth because this place is JAM-PACKED all the time (well everytime I've been here). SOMEone would notice you getting dragged out and cause a massive riot of sorts. There's usually live music (jazz) playing in the background. Their soup and desserts and drinks are pretty delicious and amazing. Just FYI though...if you came here to read/study...walk right back out, because the noise level is comparable to that of a bar. Everyone's talking and the lights are super dim. Except they have really comfy couches and a very 'read by the fireplace' atmosphere. Life would be easier if I could just order it myself. Don't get me wrong. the staff is awesome. But, i don't like being forced to tip for service if it doesn't really exist and I don't need it... 3. It gets really dark at night. I get the cozy atmosphere, but if I want to get some reading done, I'd appreciate better lighting. 4. You're expensive. I can't afford you often. Tryst is my cure for all things: late night musings, heartbreaks, rendezvous with old friends, cravings for warm alcohol, brunch, midnight munches, and need for an intriguing place that combines coffeehouse, lounge, and bar serving pastries, caffeine, and interesting alcoholic beverages. One star off because it's always uncomfortably crowded and it's extremely difficult to find seats. Wifi is not provided on weekends because the place is already overcrowded. I can't blame them though, since popularity is not something the owners should try to curb, and it wouldn't be a good idea to have a host to seat you (that would diminish the Tryst-ness Tryst has). Service is spotty. Sometimes the servers don't even acknowledge you (especially at the bar) and you have to grab the menus from another customer and try your best to grab the bartender's attention. I love the ambiance at Tryst when you sit there on a weekend night watching all the craziness outside bustling in the insanity of Adams Morgan. Somehow that brings you a modicum of tranquility knowing you're probably more sober than all others, even if you're having a really strong alcoholic cider inside the cafe. It's so cozy and calming to be at Tryst most of the time -- not counting when you're desperately trying to find a table, that is. read more

I was really excited to check this place out as I've heard that they have pretty good beverages and food. They offer coffee, smoothies, iced drinks, cocktails/beer/wine, brunch options, pastries & desserts, sandwiches, salads, and small plates. As we just had lunch, my friend and I came here to just get a beverage to go. I had the Washington Carver, which was an iced chocolate and peanut butter smoothie frozen drink. The taste was pretty good as it had a combination of the chocolate and the peanut butter; not too sweet, which was nice. I think the only issue was that we waited for about 30 minutes for the beverage as my drink was grabbed by someone else and then my order got backed up (it was kind of weird as there were so many baristas behind the counter!) :( It didn't really seem as if there was any rush to remediate the situation so I thought that was kind of unfair, and some of the baristas just seemed very unfriendly :( The place was really packed, though, and I thought the vibe was really cool with a hodge podge of random paintings and the artsy feel of it. Very trendy and busy coffee/pastry shop in AdMo. Mostly young clientele hanging out with friends/date mates or settling in for long study sessions. Like Venu, I give it a 4.25 out of 5. Pros: Communal seating means you might share space with strangers but the customers seem okay with that so it doesn't feel too odd. May be a good way to meet people! The staff is nice and happy to help answer questions etc. Yummy espresso drinks - I recommend the Chaippuccino. First time I've had cherry pie served to me cold (they can heat it upon request) but I liked it so much better that way. Tried to save half but nope, didn't happen. Good people watching since the crowd is uniquely AdMo-esque (young/hipstery). On a side note, I think AdMo is the closest thing DC has to Brooklyn (not nearly as eclectic or bursting with good eats of course, but it's DC...). Cons: very crowded, noisy, and distracting. Slightly tough to get a free seat at rush hour (brunch time - especially for a big group but the communal seating does prevent a long wait - and also means little to no privacy and serious claustrophobia). Not the place to go if you're trying to get some peace and quiet unless you bring headphones. Service can be slow when it's crowded. It's pricey and the size of a small cappuccino to-go is jokingly small (only 8oz. but costs the same as a 16oz. elsewhere). No wifi on weekends. Verdict: It's my new fave coffee shop in the DMV. Overall, I liken it to NOVA's Northside Social, my previously fave coffee shop BUT I'm going to give Tryst more love because it is cozier (nice plush sofas), has cool daily events, a much bigger and more diverse menu, longer hours, and the service by the hipster youth is so much friendlier than the snotty attitude and yuppy vibes given off at NS. The servers at the latter always seem miserable and it ruins my otherwise good experience. Also, better ventilation means Tryst doesn't reek of whatever meat is being cooked the way NS always does. Will definitely be back to try a giant waffle that I saw someone devouring with a smile on their face the whole way through. read more

Tryst has been on my list of coffee houses to try and I'm glad I was finally able to cross it off. This is totally my scene, great coffee, shelves full of books, wifi, mismatched tables & decor, and hipsters everywhere. Even though I never have time for a full breakfast, breakfast food will forever be my favorite. I ordered the Apple, Cheddar, & Bacon Frittata and a side salad. It was a perfect hearty meal for that cold & rainy day. You can never go wrong with mixing cheddar and bacon, but the apples on top provided a great balance to the sweet and savory meal. I also had a regular latte made with almond milk. The coffee itself was very rich and not too bitter. The almond milk gave it a nice creamy consistency as well. I had a sip of my friend's Lavender Hot Chocolate and that one sip warmed me up to my very soul. I'm a fan of baking and cooking with lavender so this drink is a must! I will be getting my own cup next time. This will definitely be a regular spot of mine to hit up, and I can't believe I waited so long to come here. You really can't have any idea how cool this place is until you spend some time here. Yes, I have loved it for a while now as a place to go for good coffee, great tea, and to chat with friends. The fact that it is conveniently located for me, they have free wi-fi, and they let you sit and enjoy all are good things. The people are an eclectic collection of exchange students, journalists and would be coffee house urban chic liberals. I really like this because I love people watching. So all this alone with the fabulous collection of extremely fresh personalized french-press teas is enough for four stars. What pushed this place over the edge for me was how this place is or has become an open performance space. I mean where else can you go for a couple of teas and some fruit with your friend that happened to be in the neighborhood and watch a television piece being filmed about some demonstration. Then, have some Norwegian classical violinists, who just happened to be touring the United states, give a free taste of their show as part of their cafe du concert series and finally listen to a jazz band afterwards, all on a spontaneous sunny Wednesday afternoon. I was very happy with Tryst. I don't venture into Adams Morgan often, but my family decided that we should all get together and get lunch/ early dinner. My sister and I decided that we would wait in Tryst for our parents, who can never get to anything on time. I also figured that I should try out their coffee since it ranks so highly on the DC coffee list. I have to say that I was surprised at the quality of the coffee. It was good. This is why I was surpised: I walked into Tryst and saw every single chair in a fairly big area filled. I must have been looking at at least 100 people sitting in chairs, couches and easy chairs. There were people everywhere. If a shop has a great location and a monopoly on a market (coffee, in this case, as there aren't very many non-starbucks coffee shops around) I tend to not expect much. They are going to sell a lot of everything just by being there and being open. So I was surprised, when I gingerly sipped my latte to see how much sugar I should pour in it to mask the horrible burnt taste, that the coffee was good. It didn't need any sugar! Shocking! My sister had a vanilla chai, which she said was good. Sorry, didn't try it so I don't know. We hovered like vultures, seeing if we could get a seat. When a table opened up, I swooped down like a rabid eagle and secured the spot. What luck! We waited and waiting for our parents. Our stomachs grew more and more empty. Our mother arrived and she joined us in our hunger pains. The women of the family made the executive decision that, since our father was late, he would miss out on the appetizers that we were going to order. We had the stuffed mushrooms and the tri-colored something-or-other. It was bruschetta. Both were very good. The stuffed mushrooms were a bit heavy. I liked the tri-colored whatever's better. They had 3 different types of paste on it - goat cheese, olives and a salmon/ roasted tomatoes paste. They were all great. I guess my one and only complaint is that this place is packed and loud and even more packed. There are so many people here that it's not really cozy. Come here and expect: seat yourself in this trendy cafe/restaurant/bar. Drink craft beer, decent wines, espressos and you name it. Eat health conscientious american fusion food. What I got from it: I still remember my introduction to Tryst was through a print out of the Yelp listing, and my co-worker's written-in side note: "hipsters wanted." I was thoroughly intrigued. The outside speaks for itself: you will normally see the patio filled up with people drinking more than just an espresso, and eating well presented gourmet american fusion foods. You will also see people typing away or reading on some very comfy couches, if Tryst has opened up their ceiling-to-floor windows. Basically, Tryst shouts for your attention. I have enjoyed all types of atmospheres here: I have written a script at the bar enjoying a craft cider; I have lounged on one of the many sofas studying theology; I have enjoyed early meals and late night chats. Tryst has an adaptable atmosphere that suits the needs of DC. Note that they have some great specials on alcohol, but mostly after 7pm, and sometimes only at the bar. Their Wine Wednesday special is 1/2 off any bottle and offered regardless of where your sit. While your try-est all their food and drink, why not try-est their live music as well on almost any given day? read more

The idea's great, but the place isn't very nice-just a bunch of bare space with old couches to sit on. Also, the layout was really weird to me.. a huge cluster@#*&, in my opinion! The area is basically one wide open space with no private nooks/crannies. I definitely prefer coffee shops that have a more cozy atmosphere (think Teaism). Also, the staff wasn't very accomodating/friendly. I asked for iced green tea and was told they only offer iced black tea. The server mentioned (with a slight attitude) that she could add ice but that'd just melt right away. After a long day and night of DC drinking, this was a perfect start to a late morning. Nice quaint ambiance, with table seating or bar seating to choose from. The table seating ranges from a two top with chairs to couches that have seen more asses than a toilet seat, but in a clean way ;) I loved their "leave a book take a book" bookshelf chock full of random reading materials, who knows, for you collectors, you might find the next gem of a novel out here! But don't take this bohemian look and feel to lead you to believe that the place is dated. This is my new happy place. All day brunch, super friendly service, and no pressure whatsoever on how long you stay (well I guess that one's both good and bad), so grab yo laptop and prepare for some solid worktime accompanied by awesome food and quality caffeine. I would say it has a pretty unique, cozy feel, especially when they open up the wall length front windows - so if you like that kind of down-to-earth vibe, the great outdoors are literally not too far and not too close. Definitely recommend some coffee to sip on and pastries/cakes (especially the mega chocolate chip cookies that THEY HEAT UP FOR YOU) to snack on after your equally satisfying brunch. read more

Living in SF you get used to our style of relaxed wifi cafes with good coffee. But when traveling those styles are hard to come by. Tryst is the exception in DC where your only other option is Starbucks. Tryst is comfortable, inviting, and you get waited on while sitting on the couch. I came to Tryst on Monday. MLK Day (holiday) around 4 pm. I thought it would not be crowded since it is the holiday but unfortunately everyone and their mama showed up! LOL. My first time tryingTryst. Crazy, right? I've been living here on and off for 9 years and have ate or drinked everywhere on this street but here. Luckily I finally found a couch. A big velvet green comfy couch. I brought my laptop ready to work. Plugged charger in and logged on. I looked down and there was no wifi connection name that said Tryst. Every connection was Iphone hot spots. I asked the waiter what is the wifi and she said they turn it off on holidays. Oh my gawwwwwwwd. Like really ; ( I'm so not tech savvy because though I have a xfinity log in I have no idea how to hot spot it without wifi. I gotta figure that out this week lol. Thankfully my friend was meeting me so I used his and was good from there. I ordered a honey bourbon chai, classic manhattan and merlot. Not all at once ! This was within a 3 hour span lol. Well I mention I didn't like it, and they promptly let me re-order (good service? check!) so I get my tried-and-true favorite: their honey doooo mint smoothie. Yes yes yes. Then I get my other Tryst staple: their yogurt and home-made granola. Yes. One beer turned into two, turned into three and I was having such a nice conversation with the bartender and hipster folk that I almost forgot about the weird pictures of people in bathtubs drinking coffee combined with the overly dramatic B/W blowups of improverished communities in some mysterious Third World Country. I just about forgot the cheesey tunes of The Beatles and The Doors (I love both, but you get where I'm going with this, right?). Such a great space filled with a lot of seating. The place was packed and people were forced to share tables. But I think locals have that part figured out and aren't too worried about it either way. read more

What a great neighborhood spot. I was on a very short visit to DC for an event and staying in the area when I came upon Tryst. The area is pretty trendy and has a lot of obnoxious sports bars and overwhelmingly scene restaurants, but Tryst is like a homey oasis in the middle of it all. They're restaurant, bar, cafe, living room, and concert hall all in one. The space is really large with an outdoor patio in front, full seating along the bar/counter, and a hodge podge of tables and couches as far as the eye can see. Even though it was very crowded every time I visited I never had to wait for a seat (though I also never scored a couch seat near an outlet, those people seemed to be straight up camping there) and I always had very quick and very friendly service. I ordered the kale salad again and again because it was just that good, but I also enjoyed a post-conference beer and morning coffee here. The prices aren't what you'd call low, but the food is good enough to justify it-lots of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and a huge number of vegan and vegetarian options. If I lived in this neighborhood I'd be at Tryst every day; as it was I was there for basically every meal during my visit. read more

The only things that were a turn off were their bathrooms and issue with flies. Tryst is definitely a great hangout whether you are just there for a date, doing your work, or hanging out with friends. We came here around midnight on a Thursday night and they were severely understaffed. The barrista was sweet enough to step up to the plate and take our order. Mike ordered the hot mulled orange juice (blend of juice and earl grey tea) which he really liked and I had the blended cappuccino which was also really well made. We shared a fruit tart where the fruit and custard was fresh but the crust was a little hard for our taste. Our only issue with the place was with the service, it took us forever to pay our bill and we couldn't find anyone to help us so we had to go up and tell the cashier what we ordered so we could pay. I've been to Tryst a few times and it is usually a little bit chaotic and crowded. the atmosphere and quality of the food and coffee is what makes it a great place but a little service would be nice though =) read more

I wish they would open another Tryst near 14th or U St? :) Servers are nice, definitely do their best to check on you with the volume of customers. Coffee, tea, juice options are excellent. The food could be improved... Frittata was small and barely warm when served, but the side serving of fruit was decent. Croissants here are not as good (light, flakey and buttery) as Whole Foods or Kafe Leopold's. I will revise this if I find that it was just an off day. Wifi is solid. Tryst is a solid spot for breakfast or coffee. The drinks are well made, the service is efficient and very friendly, and the food is good. The prices aren't bad either. I stick to the cappuccino, but my wife enjoys the chai latte as well. The spinach frittata and spring herb frittata are comforting breakfast. The bar is my favorite place to sit when coming with just one or solo, and there are lots of different tables in the middle for more than two. There are a bunch of sofas with coffee tables and/or end table in a somewhat random layout that give the place a unique atmosphere. There is seating on the sidewalk for nice days. The place can be pretty busy, so if you're coming in a large group prepare to split up or hover waiting for people to move or leave. If you want to be good to your waistline, you maaay just want to avoid Tryst. So much sweet goodness - I will have to limit my visits here to ensure I don't just become one giant piece of cake myself. Coffeeshop + bar + lounge in one giant ol' room. Tryst gets props not just because it is so effortlessly cool, but also because there are (sadly) so few places like it in this city. I've only sampled the sweets, but I know, through hearsay, that the drinks are marvy. The herbs they use are fresh each day - so if you're going for a mint julep, let's say, you'll know you've got some fresh goodness there. Drinks come served with style. Oversized latte mugs with those foam designs you only see at the best places. French press for special teas (I recommend Chaucer's cup - a fruity tea with pieces of apple, cinnamon, cardamon, etc etc). The desserts are fantastic, but there is a tendency for things to sadly run-out by night-time. (So if you want that crazy chocolate layer cake, you've got to get in and procure your slice of heaven early!) The chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, for example, is to die for. None of the flavors are overbearing, the cheese isn't too dense, and the cookie crumb base is a welcome addition to the combination of textures. Brunch is also served ALL DAY - so if you crave a hot Belgium waffle topped with fruity goodness at 9 pm, it can be yours. Couches and love seats and small tables help to accommodate the person out by himself or larger groups. There are board games, too! Only downsides: The place is quite bit and open - almost warehouse-y in feeling. I feel like some partitions or something to help break up the space would help in creating the more intimate feel that I think Tryst wants to achieve. Or not. Just my opinion. The music - it is great - don't get me wrong - but it is LOUD. Songs through the stereo or live music (Great live music!!!) come at a volume that is just too much. I haven't come here to read or study, but it seems that many, if not most, patrons do. I know that I could not do any kind of productive work at Tryst with music playing that loud. Really cozy and good coffee and nice people. I'm never disappointed when I go here. Also their chai lattes are exceptionally good.
