I ordered the breakfast burrito and their peppermint mocha latte. I ordered half the syrup on the latte and it was really good. The breakfast burrito was ok. Honestly it wasn't for the "hot sauce" (not spicy at all) it would've been pretty bland. The chorizo was the only flavorful part of the wrap, which made it overall "ok" but not $15 worth. Service was great and they were fast! Ambiance is nice especially if you're looking for a coffee shop with lots of tables, outlets, etc to work out of. Overall 4/5

A hidden gem in the DMV area!! Their flat whites (basically all their coffees) come with their signature animal crackers on the side and reasonably priced. The food is incredible, highly recommend the Archie which is a turkey bacon club with a side of house made chips. Service is good, most servers are kind and will recommend items to try. Popular spot for working!

What a cool place!!! I haven't been here in about ten years and a lot remains the same. Tryst is a mixture of coffeehouse, cafe, bar and meeting/Internet cafe. I ordered a Cuban coffee and a mix drink. Both drinks were good but it was more about the memories. My only negative point was service was a little slow even though I was seated at the bar. Overall this is a very cool spot and I enjoyed myself!!!

Every single staff member we dealt with was rude and had an unnecessary attitude. Our drinks rly weren't good. The only positive thing was the places decor. Otherwise, everyone there looked miserable to be there

Can't believe I have never reviewed Tryst before! On this most recent visit, I had an egg white and spinach wrap and a chai latte. We enjoyed sitting outside on a warm fall morning. Service was typically casual. I love Tryst because during the winter they will typically make different variations of off-menu hot toddies when asked!

Walked in on a Saturday for lunch. Don't wait to get seated; customers have to seat themselves. There was sofa, many tables and chairs, and a bar. Some people were working on their laptops. We were lucky that a table was open when we arrived. Patio seating was also available. Destiny, our server, was friendly. The breakfast burrito was fine. I liked the Archie club. It tasted great - flavorful, but not salty. The textures were also complementing each other - the soft roasted turkey juxtaposed with crunchy bacon and toasted wheat bread, as well as the veggies (lettuce, tomatoes). The matcha latte had a few solid bits in it (not sure what they were; definitely not just undissolved powder) and it was replaced after.

The food was decent! I'm naturally comparing this place to Open City since they share similar items on their menu. I go a breakfast burrito that had more egg than anything, but the sauce that came with it made up for the lack of chorizo & cheese. I also had a green smoothie which was AMAZING - and I'm typically a strawberry banana girl. I'd go back for the coffee/smoothies but not so much for food. Service and ambiance was a 10/10. It was packed so I took my order to go.

I love that this coffee shop opens until midnight most days --I love a good iced coffee. I tried the blood orange lemonade on this warm day, and I couldn't be more happy ! Slightly tart and sweet--a must have! It's very spacious with a lot of room to work, read and relax. Service was fast! I can't wait to try their coffees next

Tryst is cozy and worth the trip, even if it is a bit of a pain to get to. Now that I have moved to a neighborhood with a better bus system, I am happy to say I will be coming here more often. Their espresso based drinks have always been a reliable option for good coffee in the district, so I was excited to try their espresso martini during film trivia. The color was slightly off, but the foam and overall texture were spot on. I have had their food before and was not particularly impressed, but I spotted a plate of waffles at the table next to me, and they looked incredible. Maybe I will give them another shot. The biggest complaint people seem to have about Tryst is the service. It is slow and, at times, indifferent. But the thing about a place like this is that, despite its flaws, I cannot see myself not coming back. They host fun community events, their seating is inviting, and the atmosphere truly captures the essence of a classic coffeehouse. Sitting here at night with a caffeinated drink feels like something straight out of a 90s sitcom. There is a certain nostalgia to it, a lost art that Tryst is keeping alive. And for that I am grateful.

Tryst is a cozy coffee shop in AdMo that I had been passing by for quite awhile. I was excited to pop in on a cold day to enjoy coffee with a friend. Upon entering, the staff was oddly standoffish - staring directly at me and my friend with blank, judgmental faces and avoided asking for our order. Once we approached the counter, the barista told us they had table service and would serve us shortly. However, we did not have anyone come to take our order until about 15 minutes after we sat down - all of the employees were not attending any customers and were simply talking among themselves. This came off as extremely rude and seemed as though they were being exclusive as to which customers they served. As for the coffee, it was a standard latte - nothing too special. The Masala Chai was an American style chai with lots of milk and little spice or flavor. Seems like a nice place to get work done or catch up with a friend. However, after this experience, I will not be returning. To the Tryst Staff - please learn to treat ALL customers with respect and make them feel welcome in your establishment.

Excellent service and decor. The espresso based drinks were excellent. We enjoyed the waffle and the bacon was quality. Really enjoyed our time there. Would come back next time if we were in the area

    Dirty Chai Frappe
    Derek L.

I stepped foot inside after 10 years since the last time I was here in DC and ordered a dirty chai frappe. For the DC heat, this was still amazing as usual. Ordering at the counter was easy and efficient. The space now has WiFi on weekends. The only things that deducted a star was the bathroom didn't have a hook for bags and didn't have a holder to dispense toilet paper so it was a scary task of not letting a giant toilet paper roll slam to the ground. Also paper straws are a no go for drinks that melt quickly in the DC heat.

Service was a little slow at first, but the one bartender working was friendly and cheerful and doing her best to keep up with everyone until another two eventually showed up or came back from break. Atmosphere was really chill. I liked the dim lighting, everyone was casual and relaxed with a dj setting up in the corner, some hip hop and classic 00s rap bumping, and a steady flow of young-ish friend groups coming in for cheap beer around 5pm. I tried not to evesdrop on the couple next to me at the bar arguing, but their fight sort of added to the entertainment and general vibe. This is such a perfect spot for either a date night or a fun night out with friends. The speakeasy vibe, the chic atmosphere, and the music (a smooth, chill house mix) all come together so effortlessly. Plus, being open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays is a huge bonus. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time - this place stays busy for a reason. From my previous visit, I remember having a ravioli dish, what I believe was a braised beef, and their sliders with duck fat fries - all of which were incredible and clearly memorable since I was thinking about them for months. The sliders paired with those fries were honestly a standout. This time around, we had to get the duck fat fries again, and they were just as phenomenal as I remembered. The cheesesteak oysters were easily a 10/10 - fresh, meaty, and honestly surprising coming from someone who used to not even like oysters. We also tried the grilled octopus, which was well-seasoned (as expected, slightly chewy), and the fried calamari, which was light, not heavy at all, and paired perfectly with the sauces. The tuna tartare was another standout - super fresh, soft, and practically melted in your mouth. For drinks, we went all in. The Dirty Diamond martini with blue cheese olives was great, though if you like your martinis extra filthy, I'd recommend specifying that. The Hemingway Special had a nice subtle sour kick, and the vanilla mint espresso martini was strong (you can definitely taste the alcohol) but still smooth and frothy. The Mary Pickford with Malibu was surprisingly delicious - almost like a mocktail. The Paloma was solid, and the Code Red cocktail gave me slight cosmopolitan vibes. But the real star was the dulce de leche espresso martini--absolutely unforgettable. What really ties everything together here is the service. The staff - from the hosts to the servers - are attentive, welcoming, and genuinely elevate the experience. Overall, Code Red is one of those places you keep coming back to. If you're looking for a stylish speakeasy atmosphere with great food, drinks, and energy, this is it.

There is nothing--nothing--about this place that justifies those prices except the fact that it sits dead center in tourist territory. And they know it. And they are banking on it. Shame on them. Do yourself a favor: keep your coins. There are plenty of rooftops in DC with better vibes, actual music, available seating, and drinks that do not require a small financial commitment. This one? Hard pass.
