Tryst is a DC stable. Conveniently located in Adam's Morgan around plenty of other bars and restaurants. It's an easy walk to rock creek park, tennis courts, hoops, a track, and Malcolm X park. Parking is a challenge, but the area is so walkable you won't want a car anyway. Both indoor and outdoor dining is available. It has a tasteful, eclectic cafe vibe. Between the formal seating and couches this could be a great spot for working, brunch, a casual business meeting, or a date. The coffee never disappoints, especially the animal cracker companions that accompany your drink. On this visit I ordered the quiche and side salad. The crust on the quiche was perfection. read more

She comes a few mins later going directly to the table next to mine (3 ppl who came a few minutes before me and got their food prob 20 mins after they ordered) She says to them "sorry about the food coming out late, the kitchen is backed up. I will give you guys a discount on your bill." I thought, hmmmm, i waited way longer and no one has even taken my order yet. So in my head it only made sense I got that same discount. She took my order, corn waffles with banana, nutella, whip cream syrup. It was delicious! another 30 mins later, I'm waiting for service once again. I had to go in to ask a guy at the counter for the check/to go box. When the bill came, it was not only full priced, but i was charged for Whip cream, banana, nutella, syrup??? as additional costs. The menu only said Nutella was extra $1.50 but apparently everything on top of the waffle was ADD ONs. I didn't want to ruin my good mood and paid and left. But it left a bad taste in my mouth. I spend a lot of my time in this space when I am in DC, and it is surrounded by a block of other really interesting businesses. Tryst existed when I lived in DC -- and I spent many late nights here working away on my resume. As a side note, I remember how impressed I was that Tryst offered free wifi. Seriously, I'm starting to sound ancient. I can only imagine recounting the period of dial-up Internet to my nieces and nephews one day. Tryst is the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop like Central Perk in Friends. You'll find plenty of couches and tables crammed inside, nothing matches (not even the place settings) and you'll still find people playing board games and cards. It's a great place to bring the family since it's super casual and you're steps away from all the stores in Adams Morgan (for all those shoppers out there). If you're still hungry, the menu has a nice selection of sandwiches as well as desserts. It also stays open late, until midnight on weekdays. The muffin was great, I personally was not a fan of the burrito and the mimosa was great! 4 stars because parking is tricky to find, there's a garage around the corner that requires you go down an alleyway and the service wasn't great. The guy forgot the order multiple times and it took about half an hour after our table had been cleared to get the check and track someone down. After a couple recommendations from friends for good places to work in the area, I tried out Tryst! First of all, Tryst is massive with lots of seating. I entered in on a late Friday afternoon and the place was packed. I managed to get a table and after a bit of slow service, ordered a smoothie while I worked. The wifi was great and the staff were kind. My smoothie was served borderline warm which wasn't the most appealing. I would definitely come back to give some other menu items a shot as it is clearly a popular place. Overall, I wasn't super impressed with Tryst but also can't complain. As for as coffee shops to work in, this is sure to have seating and reliable wifi and a good menu. I really like this spot and I wish I could rate it higher but service is really hit or miss. You'll have 3-4 people working behind the bar but no one really circulating to give water refills. Coffee quality isn't great I've ordered ice coffee and ice has come mostly melted and they charge an extra dollar for a splash of almond milk. I haven't tried anything other than bagels here which are fine but on occasion have been a little stale. I wouldn't say to come here if you're looking for quality coffee. This was my first time here and I was meeting one of my friends here for a Sunday morning brunch. I biked over and luckily they had an empty bike loop right in front. The host desk was outside and they offered seating for inside and outside. Was lucky again as I just got there right when they were clearing a table of two outside! The table is on the street, but blocked off like what most restaurants did during the pandemic. I ordered an iced chai latte with oat milk and the lox and bagel. There was nothing special about the chai latte, but the food was good. It was surprisingly filling and none of the ingredients were over powering. The service was pretty good. Tryst became a staple of Adams Morgan for good reason. Even under pandemic restrictions, where late nights no longer make economic sense and customers are expected to demonstrate vaccination status and mind their masks, it is an inviting space to be alone in a crowd or bring a few friends to hang out. One of those coffee shops that intends to accommodate both informal social gatherings and remote workers (as long as you don't need a quiet external environment), the variety of seating options (e.g.: couches and armchairs in addition to bistro and bar) and arrangements and general relaxed nature of service is most often a boon. That said, the coffee is...suitable. It is routinely well-prepared (as at all of their sister shops) but the roast they use is perhaps chosen to be more resilient to the various peculiarities of American coffee habits, and therefore leaves a bit wanting in basic drinks. The animal crackers are a quaint touch, though I'll always have a soft spot for the dark chocolate at Emissary or the shortbreads at Black Lion. Food options are appropriately modest, in keeping with the theme of being a casual neighborhood joint, and prices are right-sized for portion and placement. read more

I went to Tryst to do work on a Thursday. There were a variety of tables, lounge chairs, and couches to work on and the majority of them were taken. You will still find places to seat, but know that they are consistently crowded throughout the day. While sitting there during my workday, I had a latte with soy milk, the chia pudding, roast beef sliders, Irish coffee, and golden milk. They serve their coffee / espresso drinks with animal crackers, which I think is a great touch. Their latte and Irish coffee was delicious and I definitely would have ordered them again if I had stayed longer. Their golden milk was almond milk, cinnamon and turmeric. It was good, but a little too sweet for me. Otherwise their chia pudding was absolutely delicious and very filling considering its size and their roast beef sliders were absolutely yummy. The service is also great. They are constantly keeping an eye on their tables without being overbearing or bothering you too much. The majority of the people in the restaurant during the week are students or professionals doing their work, so the waiters do a great job balancing letting you work and making sure you're content. We came here on Labor Day Monday for brunch. After a 40 min wait time (which is fine) we were sat. I ordered a latte and the breakfast burrito, he had the Molly sandwich and a mint iced tea. Our food arrived in a timely fashion, but a good 15 minutes before my coffee. My burrito was ok. For having chorizo in it, it was extremely bland. I'm not usually a person who uses hot sauce on a breakfast burrito, but I used every last drop of hot sauce to attempt some flavor. It was a good size and the eggs were cooked well, but it was bland af. His Molly sandwich also very bland and boring. With chipotle bbq sauce, again we expected a lot of flavor. He said it was the most boring sandwich ever. His summer iced mint tea was delicious, and my latte (when it came out finally, about halfway through eating) was also delicious. The outdoor seating was ample and in the shade (thankfully) and the decor inside is very charming. The service was also good and friendly. I totally get that the place was busy, but it took the waitress 30 mins to get us our check after that. The seating is self-serve and they don't accept reservations, so make sure you plan accordingly or show up with a small party. I ordered an almond milk latte, mixed fruit bowl, and avocado toast. Let's break it down... 1. Almond milk latte: I loved the presentation accompanied by animal crackers. The coffee itself wasn't anything too outstanding, but better than your average cup of joe. 2. Mixed fruit bowl- I was actually surprised at the variety of fruit they gave in the bowl- apples, berries, pineapple, cantaloupe. Great side dish. 3. Avocado toast- Luckily this came available on gluten free bread, but was disappointed that they only offered hard boiled eggs and no poached or over easy. This coming from a girl that loves runny eggs was upsetting, but it was still good. I added a side of smoked salmon to make it even better! One item that I did not order, but my friend did, was the frittata! WOW. This is what you come here for. Probably best frittata I've ever had. Crunchy outside, soft middle- absolutely perfecto. One downside is the quality of the bathrooms. I walked into what would look like a bathroom in the back of a nightclub- pee all over the seat, dirty floors, etc. They should really do a better job of cleaning these since it's such a nice spot! We had to wait at least 10 minutes for a table to clear out and another 10-15 for our order but it was well worth the wait. Tryst is an Adams Morgan gem that's got something for pretty much everyone. It's a stellar brunch spot and coffee shop that transitions to a casual and spacious bar in the afternoon/evening. Vegetarian and gluten-free options abound, and vegans can enjoy options from waffles with toppings to a tofu hoisin sandwich to chocolate banana muffins. (They'll also make edits and substitutions if you ask.) The coffee is always strong, and served in a bowl-sized mug with animal crackers! You can order coffee and breads/pastries at the counter or sit down for the full menu. It is so warm and cozy inside with different types of seats. It seems like a great place to work or study from during the week. They have a bunch of different coffees, sandwiches, breakfast, bagels and croissants. I had the Tryst Bowl which had cauliflower rice, radishes, pickled onions, tomatoes and a dressing. My friend would recommend The Eric sandwich as well. When we were ready to leave, we paid at the counter and could easily split the amount. I love that they didn't rush us. I would like to try one of the bagels or pastries next time as well. read more

Words do no justice to express the love I have for Tryst Coffeeshop. It's a second home to me. I've been coming to Tryst on the regular for 6 years now and, as a DC native, I have yet to find a better spot in the city to grab coffee, a bite to eat, hang with friends, study, pull out my laptop and work, or just chill with a good book. And, its a great spot for a first date! I love the vibe here and the diverse seating options - antique couches, loveseats, two-person and eight-person tables, round tops - that give you the right setting for whatever you're looking to do. The staff: they are what make this place stand apart from any other. Tryst does an amazing job of finding people who are the right fit. Clearly their training program is strong because the staff know what they are doing. It must be a great place to work because many of them have stayed for years. A few staff that really stand out as exceptional are David, Marisa, and EZ. And Gillian, a great new addition to the Tryst family, was warm and welcoming when I came in today. The only thing that could stand to improve is the WiFi internet bandwidth. Sometimes when too many people are logged on, it is difficult to browse. read more
