3.5 stars. Took my godsister here last Friday night for an early birthday celebration. We both thought Truth was a club every time we passed it lol so it was pleasant surprise to learn that it's an Asian fusion restaurant that also does hookah! What a perfect combo that encapsulates Astoria pretty well. We walked in the vestibule and saw a bouncer checking IDs. When we told him we had dinner reservations, he skipped checking our IDs and lead us inside. To our surprise, the restaurant was absolutely beautiful!!! The chic decor and ambient lighting really blew us away. Both my godsister and I already agreed that we would come back here with our +1s for date night. But now for the best part...the food! We ordered 3 appetizers and 3 entrees to share, along with 2 cocktails each and a dessert. We were truly curious to see what Truth had to offer on their menu, so we went all out! We ordered: Cucumber Salad Crispy Rice Tuna Karaage Chicken Sizzle Pepper Steak Bbq Spare Ribs (not on their online menu) Fried Rice Mochi Donuts The appetizers were 10/10. The tuna is a must order. The chicken was crunchy and juicy. The salad was the perfect balance to the saltiness. To be honest, I felt pretty satisfied after devouring the first course! Not too sure what happened with our server, but she disappeared and didn't take our entree orders until we were basically finished with our appetizers. This was not ideal, as we became full and lost our appetites while waiting for our entrees. When the entrees finally came, we slowly started making our way through them and noticed how the meat entrees were super salty! They were flavorful per se, however, the salt was pretty up there. Even my godsister, who loves extra salt on everything, thought they were salty too! I would definitely give the kitchen another chance and order them again, however, I'd keep in mind that the Bbq spare ribs came with rice so we had basically two entrees with rice which felt excessive. We were sooo stuffed by the time we ordered dessert. I noted in our reservation to please surprise the birthday girl with a candle and a birthday message, but the hostess must've missed that note. I was disappointed we ordered dessert and there nothing decorated on it. The mochi donuts were fine, nothing to rave about. Next time I will be more diligent with notifying the staff of a celebration. I'd also like to note that around 8:30/9 was when the entire restaurant was filled with people enjoying their dinner + doing hookah. Just a heads up to anyone who is not a fan of hookah (+ the smell) to come early before the festivities begin. We also noticed the music getting louder and louder as the night went on, making it harder to hear each other. I mentally prepared myself for this, as earlier that day, the hostess called me and the music was blasting so hard that I can also barely hear her! The whole meal was around $300 with tip already included. Keep in mind they automatically add a 20% tip, even to small parties like our own. Overall, I'd come back to Truth mainly for the drinks and appetizers. This is a great addition to the neighborhood and a cute date night spot! read more

Beautiful Vibe, But Horrible Customer Service I recently attended a birthday dinner for my friend's husband at The Truth in Astoria. It was my first time at the establishment, and I absolutely loved the design and decor. It is a beautiful, low-key restaurant with so much potential, and I would honestly love to return and become a regular guest. However, management seriously needs to address the behavior of the server/greeter working that night. We were treated very nastily and rudely by this individual. My friend's husband was surprised by a close friend who had driven nearly two hours to see him. We were already seated and catching up when the server/greeter abruptly and harshly told us we had to "hurry up and order." We completely understand that popular spots have table time limits, but there is a professional, polite way to remind guests of that. The delivery was so aggressive that it made the entire environment extremely uncomfortable and completely killed the vibe of the room for the rest of the night. I want to come back and support this beautiful establishment, but I hope management addresses this specific staff member's hospitality and customer service skills. Heard about Truth in Astoria from a few NY baseball players who mentioned it as one of their go to spots. So I had to check it out. It's a restaurant and lounge vibe where you can kick back, enjoy hookah and listen to a dj spinning in the background. Service was great from start to finish. The cuisine is asian fusion. Overall the food was good with a few highlights and a couple of misses. The spicy tuna tartare was really tasty. The steak binchotan which is on a skewer was very tender and flavorful. The sweet and sour chicken was decent. The only real letdown was the lo main. It came out pretty bland and needed a lot of hot sauce. Overall, a cool spot, good vibes, service and a fun place to spend the night. read more

I came here a few times now for different events. I will say all of the food is really good and I love that you can enjoy hookah while you eat GOOD food. There are not that many places that have great food and great hookah. This has both. I will say I have truly loved every dish and have gotten to try a lot of the menu! The only things I am not a fan of are the temaki rolls. Super small and kind of underwhelming in comparison to the rest of the menu as they have very flavorful food right down to the crispy shiitake salad! Great vibe. Cozy, chic, lowkey and intimate. People dining mind their own business and everyone is into their own conversations. Great atmosphere to lay low and scarf down some really tasty food. From the tuna tartare crispy rice appetizer to the incredibly tender and flavorful peppered steak. The salmon is another great and very tasty dish served with bok choy and a crunch medley of tiny bits that add magic to your tastebuds as they crunch them away. Service was there when you needed it. Truth is such a cute and posh restaurant and lounge. It's small but very pretty. The food was delicious -- their pepper steak was super succulent and flavorful. The friend rice was also very tasty and not heavy or oily. The pork gyozas were perfectly pan seared. Their cocktails were okay-- they leaned a bit medicinal but overall they were not bad. There is an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill but servers still provided good and warm service. The only downside is they do have a strict 90 minute seating policy--which I understand operationally but does take away from having a good experience especially if you're still consuming and trying to purchase more items. We were actually told we couldn't order anymore because they needed the table. But I would still come back to this establishment. read more

We came here for my sisters bday dinner on 11/21 and honestly when I first looked at the menu I was skeptical!!! HOWEVERRRRR the menu might be small but it's mighty lol the ambience and vibe is nice chill and very cutesy and Instagram friendly.... The only thing I wish they would turn the lighting up more and switch up the music some to cater to who they serve overall. Now back to the food the waiter explained all dishes were shareable so we ordered almost everything and it was all good the star of the show for us was the salmon that flavor was just too good and sweet & sour chicken was just chefs kiss but honestly we loved it alllllllll also get the rice we want to go back!!! Came back here last night. Ordered a different appetizer, the Chicken Karage. This was really good with the spicy sauce they served on the side. Ordered a LI tea & RAF again. 1st LI tea was made with too much soda, 2nd one he asked for cranberry juice. He still didn't like it. Said the guy at the bar from last time made it great. Came here on a whim last minute dinner plans with my friend. From the outside it looked like it was closed due to the dark curtains not allowing to see in, but once you are in you are transported to this beautiful dimly lit dining space. We got there early so only about 2 other tables were there but when sat the hostess told us we had a time limit for the table (1hr and 10min) which we said okay? Odd amount of time considering it was a Wednesday evening and only 2 other tables were there. Hostess then sat us in between the other 2 tables but the waiter accommodated us to a table with more space. We for there before happy hour and took advantage of the drinks and food (tapas style) specials. All cocktails were $10 for HH and were made with reg house liquor not top self which our waiter explained. The HH food menu had a wide arrange of food decently priced from $5-$7 each. Portions were great even if they were tapas style the cucumber salad was shareable. The baos came in one portion which was great because it allowed us to get one of each protein to try. The went off the menu for the "hand rolls" although they regular spicy salmon and tuna rolls, the pork gyoza were okay but the dipping sauce was salty to my liking and opted not to use it. The chicken satays were also okay, the peanut sauce was not what I was picturing or recall tasting in the past but maybe that is how they make their sauce but all an all would skip these next time. After dinner (past the 1hr and 10mins) the place did start to fill up but we were never rushed to leave or asked to move. We opted to get a hookah which came with 1 refill, we did the traditional as my friend is allergic to pineapple which their deluxe hookahs are whole pineapple based, all an all the place is beautiful. Came here for a brunch for my friends bday and I had seen it pop up several times on instagram. I honestly expected a lot more so it was very hyped online. Aesthetically, the restaurant is very elegant and looks classy. The play mostly house music in the background at a volume where everyone can talk and not scream at each other over the music. Since our whole party wasn't there when we arrived, we had a glass of mimosa at the bar. The mimosa had the perfect balance of champagne and orange juice. Once our whole party arrived; they took all of our drink and food orders. We all opted for the bottomless brunch and we all ordered the steak. We could only stick to the drink we selected, we could not switch between Bellinis and mimosas unless it was among each other. The Bellinis were very tasty and strong but I was disappointed in the mimosas. Tasted nothing like the mimosas we had at the bar. Every time they filled up our glass, it tasted more like orange juice than champagne. By the time we ended our bottomless, I did not feel a bit buzzed. The other thing that disappointed me was the steak dish. I expected a decent size piece of steak but instead I got a couple of thin pieces of steak chopped up with big chunks of onion, a huge portion of salad, a small scoop of white rice and an egg on top. Although everything tasted pretty good, I thought they could have been more generous with the steak and not added so many onions. They do have hookah but it is $45 which is pretty expensive. First and foremost, pretty decent restaurant. They got the ambience and lightning in check but the music is just obnoxiously tooo loud. We got the oysters to start off which was okay 6.5/10 not too pricey. The server was kinda slow but talked very fast and we couldn't really understand what she was saying. The food did take a little long to come even thought it was ceviche and salmon (25 mins). And the server barely checked on us and left us and only came back for the check. Which already included the tip even though we were 2 people and the check was barely 100$. Hello a greasy block of rice like thing that was meant to be the bread for a version of eggs benedict. Service from the chef and staff was super slow. Hello WTF were they doing behind the counter with zero customers ?#@! We told the waitress we had an event nearby and needed to be out of there by 12:30. Then had to flag her down when it got to around 12:30 pm. Plus a 20% tip was automatically added without our approval which was totally undeserved. So if you'd like to waste your money at a meal you'd hate, in a place that acts like a club in the middle of nowhere with an unprofessional staff, on terrible food be my guest. Initially I was going to write a a good review on Truth Restaurant; however, after we closed out on our bill, I saw the REAL TRUTH! My sister and I was celebrating her 60th birthday, and spent over $300, so when I got a chance I asked our server, Val, if she can give a celebratory dessert and shout happy birthday to my sister like I saw with another patrons. She said that she would let the bartender know because our seats were reserved for other patrons at that time and had to move. Not only didn't the bartenders send the celebratory dessert to us, but I also asked the hostess if she could let someone know. It was over 30 mins and we had already closed out, yet no dessert. I spoke to the manager about how frustrated I was and he just gave me the, " I don't care stare and said it probably was a miscommunication." "I'm sorry".
