My friend and I came here for lunch, and I thought the burger wasn't bad nor was it something I'd crave again. You order at the counter, take a seat and a number and wait for the employees to call out your number for pick-up. It's a casual, laid-back place that smelled wonderfully garlic, so I had to get the garlic fries, in addition to the Cheesy TrueBurger. Before our food was ready, my friend and I took advantage of the unlimited pickle bar, where you can get basic condiments like ketchup and mustard. But free pickle coins? Heck yeah. But I can't say our lunch tasted as good as it smelled. Again, don't get me wrong - it wasn't bad by any means, but I expected it to be tastier than actually was. Though the patty was cooked to medium, it wasn't as juicy as I thought it would be nor was it seasoned that much. It was on the blander side, so what was most disappointing was that I could not taste the garlic mayo that normally comes on the burger, which it really could've used. The Garlic Fries were also just fine, despite it having chunks of garlic. The garlic was not evenly spread out on the fries, so it was mostly on one side of them, but the fries themselves are on the skinnier side (which I'm normally not a fan of) and could've used just a tad more fry on them. I wouldn't pay extra for the Garlic Fries. I think our time would've been better had we gotten a milkshake, which seemed to be what most everyone there ordered. The different flavors did sound appealing, like Twinkie, which the cashier even mentioned she liked best, and adds strawberries with. But, I can't say I'd be back at TrueBurger for my burger craving. Raw onions and sliced pickles are free add-ons and you can pimp the trueburger by adding cheese (+$0.50). Of course, you can really pimp it out by adding bacon or mushroom. The bacon trueburger with cheese is $8 and the trueburger with mushroom and cheese is $9.50. Whatever combination you get, the end-product is a colorful burger that truly tastes great. I have yet to try their milkshakes that brings all the boys to the yard, but then again I am lactose-intolerant so if I drink it I might bring all my brown babies to their throne... and the thing is, their restroom is uni-sex muhahahaha. One of the better burgers I have had in recent months!! My friend and I decided to try TrueBurger last Thursday after hearing many good things about them. We got there at around 11:30am and the place was already quite full. In order to grab one of the few tables left, I quickly order a Cheesy Trueburger ($5.75) and some fries ($2.75). I thought about getting one of their shakes, but decided against it because I had a lot of eating left that day. My meal took a little less than 10 minutes to be ready. The burger was very good. The meat was cooked medium and it was very flavorful. With melted yellow cheddar cheese, lettuce, a couple slices of Roma tomato, and a warm bun, it was pretty close to burger heaven! HAPPY NATIONAL FRENCH FRY DAY! My co-workers (Claudia O., Victor S. and Peter A.) and I decided to postpone "Brownbag Tuesdays" to celebrate such a sacred holiday after my boss recommended this place. It was unanimous that this place is the best burger place in the area. I even like it better than Belly Roll's. Although, it is slightly more expensive, I thought it was worth it. The cheese was thick, gooey and melted over the burger and fries. Not to mention, the beef patty was succulently thick and super juicy. Also, according to the boys, the bacon was thick and it's "real" bacon. Peter ordered a Vanilla Milkshake so it made me crave to get a Chocolate Milkshake. He said it was good and both he and Victor egged me to get one "in order to give a true review." I hate you @$$-holes for coercing me to getting one... *sip, sip* "Hey, this is pretty good." So, maybe I don't hate those guys =P. But Peter was definitely right on. The milkshake was a perfect blend of milk and ice cream; it wasn't too sweet, not syrupy and it wasn't so thick that it's a hassle to drink. You can taste the milk and chocolate ice cream. I thought this better be worth it. I waited for 8mins and they called my name. My experience: Service was great...but there was too much bread on the burger, (thick) I liked how it was toasted but I had to remove the top off. My patty was juicy just they way I like it but was a tad bit salty, I don't know if it was the bacon that made it taste that way but my bacon was over cooked. I'm not a fan of hard bacon. For a while now, I've waffled back and forth between three or four stars for TrueBurger. However, after reading through reviews, another question came to mind - why so many comparisons to Shake Shack (East Coast) or Super Duper (SF)? For me, I can only see one similarity that the three share - a simple, straightforward menu (and metal trays too, I suppose). While it's always nice to have options, there's something to be said for places that can do a solid burger without having to gussy it up. Nothing wrong with keeping things relatively traditional and classic, if it's done right. Beyond that though, I feel like the comparisons are off. When my BACON CHEESY TRUEBURGER ($6.65) and side of FRENCH FRIES ($2.70) came out, they didn't look as enticing as what I had at Super Duper and Shake Shack (still looked pretty decent though). It was nice how it was slightly larger than Shake Shack's, but it wasn't as hefty as Super Duper's. Plus, the taste really feel short - the patty wasn't super flavorful and the bun to meat ratio was off. The fries were nice and crispy though. Having said all that, I don't want to give the wrong impression either - I still think TrueBurger is pretty solid. The price is quite reasonable for what you get (beer is just $3!) and I wouldn't mind going again (especially if I was in Oakland). Has Spandau Ballet endorsed this place because I need to know if this much is TRUE? Huh-huh-huh-hu-uh-huh... I know this much is true. What is true is that they serve burgers, fries and shakes in a style that appears to combine old-fashioned grill and new-jack artisanal. Say what? I don't know what I mean either except... I know this much is true. I first became aware of this place from (no surprise)...a recent episode of "Check, Please! Bay Area" where all three participants waxed profusely on the virtues of TrueBurger. We came, we ate, we burped. I remember this space used to be a soup-and-salad place for years when I worked at 180 Grand in the late eighties. I was surprised this was the real estate that the young owners procured because it's a relatively tiny place compared to a similar operation like Super Duper on Market in San Francisco. When Jamie W. and I entered, we immediately became preoccupied with what young family we were going to try to bump in order to find space for our ample derrieres. Lucky for us there was migratory movement just as we were ready to pick up our food. And what did we order, do you ask? Jamie was wise and ordered the $5.45 Cheesy Trueburger, which was certainly big enough for any appetite. It's good-quality Angus beef ground every day that they pound flat, grill to a crustiness on both sides of the patty, and place in a toasted egg bun. He was a bit "meh" on it compared to his beloved Double-Double at In-and-Out. As for me, I was overtaken by the memory of the portabello that was being praised on the program, so I went for the $8.95 True Deluxe which adds a breaded portabello stuffed with melted smoked mozzarella cheese (see photo). I have to agree the portabello was the best part of the burger and made me think the unthinkable - jettisoning the beef patty. I didn't and as a result, felt overwhelmed by the quantity of protein with every biteful. Of course, I felt we needed the $2.50 order of French Fries, which were quite bland and in desperate need of the salt and aioli sauce. Adding insult to injury, I actually ordered the $4.75 "Twinkie" Milk Shake which was as thickly decadent as you would expect (see photo). If you want dessert concurrently with your burger, this would do the trick. I know better for the next time. FOOD - 3 stars...a solid burger, an outstanding portabello treatment...but still left our palates wanting after our bellies were stretched AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...a tight squeeze in there...good luck when there's a rush! Today, was my 2nd visit here but 1st time dining in. That's the recommended way of fully appreciating this burger....taking it back to the office doesn't do it justice. I got the Cheesy Trueburger which was juicy and didn't need any condiments! To me that's an indicator of a good burger when you don't feel you need to add any sauce to make it better....this was definitely yummy. When given a true or false question while taking a test, you always do your best to pick the right answer. In this case, picking between a true or false burger, I would always pick true! After spending a Sunday afternoon with family members hiking, we all decided to refuel our bodies with TrueBurger. Not the healthiness options, but hey! When is a burger healthy? I was anxious to try this place out, since my ears were flooded with great words about this place. Closed on Mondays and metered parking is available around the area, if you're lucky! TureBurger has a very petite dinning area, so early arrival is suggested if you're planning on dinning in the restaurant. Another option is that you can take your order to go and within walking distance is Lake Merritt. A nice place to have small picnic with a great lake view. Before entering the restaurant, there is a menu near the entrance, but the down side is that it blocks the only way in and out of the building. The menu is simple enough to read, but the hardest thing is deciding on what to get! From the various menu options available, I went with the cheesy bacon burger. Alongside with my burger, I also got an order of garlic fries. Sadly, there was a menu change and they do not offer chili cheese fries any more *sad face*. I really wanted to try them too! They do accept cards here , but there's a minimum order of $5. The ordering process was fairly quick, which made lines short, but dinning space scares. The turn around time for my order took about ten minutes. My order was served on a small metal tray with paper lining. Their condiment bar options they had available were mustard, ketchup, jalapeño and pickle slices. After leaving the condiment bar, a lot of the dinning area had cleared out. So finding a table was not a problem. This burger had a juicy and tender beef patty, crispy strips of bacon, fresh tomatoes and lettuce, and melty cheddar cheese! The buns were super soft and very friendly on the teeth! The garlic fries had a right amount of garlic, but my breath begged to differ after the devouring the crispy and nicely seasoned garlic fries. The quality is very comparable to some of the burger places that I've been to (Smash Burger, Konjoe Burger, Super Duper Burger, The Counter), with very reasonable pricing for a local business! I know TrueBurger is one of the most popular burger joints in Oakland and I've been to this location twice (they have another location up Broadway). Call me crazy but I don't get the hype. I got a cheeseburger ($7.25) and the meat was very thin. TrueBurger claims they cook all of their burgers "medium" but mine was on the rarer side - a little too rare. I also advise asking for the mayo on the side because they tend to put A LOT here - to the point where the bun is soggy. The fries ($3.25) are nothing special. It doesn't appear they make them in-house. Perhaps the garlic fries are better because the regular fries could use a bit more seasoning and flavor. YUM! As many others have noted, Trueburger is crazy reminiscent of Shake Shack with a similar menu layout including a Mushroom Burger and a nice selection of milk shakes. My bro went with a Bacon Cheesy Trueburger while I focused on the meaty goodness with a "protein-style" Cheesy Trueburger. One bite and the freshness of the ingredients shined bright like a diamond haha - the lettuce, tomatoes, onions...all fantastic. Even more fantastic was the beef patty - cooked to a medium rare and bursting forth with juicy goodness. This was ultimately the deciding factor in bumping Trueburger up and above Shake Shack as my favorite burger joint (don't worry, I still love you In-N-Out). In the words of Wale, "Spoil me with your consistency", TrueBurger! The first time I ever had TrueBurger, it was a mouthful of delicious, fresh portobello and melted mozzarella. The perfect crisp crunch of the batter that surrounded the mushroom was also seasoned to perfection, making the first bite equal parts satisfying and interesting. The fries were nothing fancy but fries so rarely are that it didn't bother me. Plus the bathroom was clean and the staff was friendly. The saddest offense (worse than cashiers with bad atti's and even worse personal hygiene) was the steady downfall of that mushroom burger. So let me preface by saying I hope I don't receive a whole torrent of comments surrounding going against the ever-so-popular flow here..... but my burger was really not done well---at all. If anything is true, I suppose it's that I truly am not an aficionado...follow along, yes? So I arrive and order a True orig. burger, emphasis on medium. Another splurge was the CAKESHAKE (oh yes!)----a whole twinkie that meets its fate with the blades of the blender mixed in with vanilla i.c. Total was $11 and change.. I await, eagerly.... Wait time decent---about 5 minutes or so...but my patty, though ever succulent with natural meat juices flowing down, was medium on one side..and definite rawish (pink, matching my soles) on the other side. Furthermore, the other fringe side of my patty was spliced off, leaving me with less patty than the already frugal ounces of meat portioned out. Bun was definitely too soft; when you've got juicy meat, one needs a heartier sourdough-type bun need (Semifreddi's comes to mind.. so does Rudy's) to tackle the absorption rate....YUCK... not a fan. The shake, on the other hand, is what held its ground, and was wholly satisfying, and delish on the sunny day that I beheld this glorious original. Know this place is a big badboy of Uptown, and so I'm willing to patronize and see if I can undo the unpleasant first time visit. Cheers! PS. Burgers where amazing, cheese was great, meat was so juicy. The bun was extremely buttery and delish! Def could do WITHOUT garlic fries UNLESS You like really garlicky fire breathing fries then they are for you! The milkshakes were great. SOOO GOOD. the prices are fair and the burger is mouth watering. The garlic fries are to die for if you like garlic. It's real minced garlic on fries. And I got the deluxe burger which had a deep fried porta Bella mushroom and burger patty and cheese. Omg. They melt the cheese and it was oh so delicious. I got a chocolate milk shake with strawberry. It wasn't too watery or too thick, just right. A hole in the wall but very worth the trip! read more

Pretty good find....except they didn't have chili cheese fries!!!! I saw a picture of that on their Yelp page and came for that - only to find they don't have it :( Nonetheless, we got 3 items from the menu: * Bacon burger - SO good and juicy!! The bacon is perfectly crispy, and the burger tasted very fresh. ($8) * Deluxe burger - Has a deep fried portobello mushroom inside. AMAZING! The cheese stretches each bite you take. So worth it ($9.50) * Garlic fries - Pretty basic. Just a side item that's not too over priced!! ($3.75) Great burgers. Will probably come back. I have been on a best burger hunt for a while and I think we may have a winner !! The burger here was outstanding , the meat was delicious, the bun was perfect and the filling was fresh and awesome !! I think I ate the cheesy trueburger so quickly that I was shocked , it's because it was SO good ! The best part, after eating it you don't feel heavy and like you are full of grease :) that's a plus. The fries with garlic mayo where fantastic and so crispy ( just like they should be ). This is my new favourite I recommend this highly and feel the quicker you eat it the better read more

I had to check this place out after hearing about it on Bay Area Check Please. TrueBurger makes a super juicy beefy burger, similar to Super Duper. I ordered the Double-Up, which is an excellent double meat/double cheeseburger along with a side of fries, which was a little bit better than average. The standard burger patty is 5oz, so the 10oz Double-Up is quite a handful. Since it's so juicy, the bottom bun was soggy and falling apart by the time I was half way through eating the burger. The cheese seemed to be some sort of American Cheese, which was good, but I would have preferred the option to pick a cheese with a bit more bite. The fries were thin and crispy, but seemed a little dry and were extremely salty. I'm not sure if it's worth driving over the bridge for a TrueBurger, but it's definitely a really good burger, and I'd probably be a regular if I was often in the area. read more
