True Confections used to be amazing when I was little - a real Sunday summer evening treat... and while my sweet tooth remains ever present True Confections is now a hit or miss. There are times when you get the most mouthwatering and delicious cake ever.. but sometimes you find you've paid $7-$10 for an overly sugary/dry/almost stale big slice of disappointment. So far the blacktop cheesecake is a consistent win for me -- if a little heavy for one person. (Most of their cakes are better when shared.) If you live in the Alma area they are one of the only businesses open for that late night tete-a-tete, or chocolate craving... and they do make a fabulous honeyed Chai latte! read more

I came here for a treat one evening with a friend (although they only serve dessert, it ended up being my dinner). I had never heard of this place before and was a little skeptical after seeing the website. Their website is due for an update. Regardless, I was very surprised! The cakes are huge! There were a lot of choices and I had a difficult time choosing. I ended up ordering the strawberry shortcake with Earl grey tea (Mighty Leaf! Yum!). Delicious pairing. OMG!!!! The cakes in this cute little cafe are DIVINE! They're more European-style (= think butter cream) instead of (North) American-style (= think sugary frosting.) The place is kind of small & often crowded, but it's still worth a long drive or wait. They're also open late, on most nights. I used to frequent this gem when I was a kid and I even had several True Confection cakes for my birthday! Growing up over the years and now an adult, I stopped going as much but would still pop in every once in a while. I was so looking forward to a slice of heaven but for the first time, I was disappointed. I was hoping the lemon cake would be on display but sadly it wasn't. My second choice is usually the diplomat or mocha but I thought I'd try something new. My choice for this evening was coconut cream cake. Unfortunately the cake was very dry and lacked flavor. Just ridiculous - there is a minimum charge, but I am here to comment about food which I was not thrilled about either. Forgettable: We ordered a slice of carrot cake and devil's food cake. It was unfortunate because while the flavors were all there, the cakes were chilled so I could not even say it was moist. Perhaps people like their cakes cold but not me. We have visited this location on a few occasions in the past three months and have not been impressed of the service provided including the size of the slices. We bought two pieces of cake, traditional chocolate and birthday cake and both were less then 1 inch thick especially the bday cake slice which was cut on an angle that cut it very short and very thin less then 1". I went back to speak to them today. I showed the server the picture and the he stared blankly at me and stated sorry can't help you. Not even an apology and when I asked to speak to the manager or if I could get the managers name the male server still said sorry can't help. I love the True Confections venues. I've visited the one on W.Broadway and the other one on Denman many times. I like the Denman location better since it has a dark intimate romantic atmosphere to it. I also like the fact that I can also purchase a whole cake to bring home to celebrate a special occasion. My favorite cakes are: English Trifle (Vanilla cake, sherry, vanilla custard and fresh fruit, served with whipped cream), White Savannah (Angel food cake in Bavarian cream Orange Brandy Served with 3-Berry Sauce), and the White Chocolate Raspberry cheesecake. read more

Always a good spot for dessert at any time of the day. Generous portions on the cake & cheesecake make them shareable, or you can have a few bites and take them home. Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced anywhere. Four of us went there for a post dinner dessert and coffee at 7pm on a Saturday. place was perhaps one third full and there were four staff on duty. Sign inside front entrance said to wait for host to seat you. Stood and waited five minutes with nobody coming up or even acknowledging us from behind their counters. All empty tables, except one, had dishes and cutlery that had yet to be cleared away. Sat ourselves and grabbed our own menus. You can see where this is going, right? Waited ten minutes before server came by to take our order. Waited fifteen minutes before coffees and waters arrived at our table. Door Dash delivery person waiting by front door got served before we did...Newly arrived customers were becoming frustrated waiting to be seated. Our server told people they were short staffed by two people. Not even remotely close to the truth. The four staff on duty was sufficient to handle everyone if they had been more organized and efficient. "Not enough staff" is the most common excuse in the customer service industry. They could have worked smarter to alleviate the wait and order backlog. We waited another ten minutes with no desserts arriving, yet could see them already sliced, plated, and just sitting on top of the counter. So close, yet so far away. Could the girl who sliced the cakes not take the few extra steps and just bring them to customers' tables? What a smashing idea that would have been! When our server brought our desserts over, one of them was incorrect, yet she took them all back instead of leaving the correct orders on our table. What a stupid setup this is! Finally, after 30 minutes, our desserts and drinks arrived. The party of five who arrived after us had not even gotten menus to look at and flatly told our server that True Confections had lost another customer and promptly stormed out. We finished our desserts and coffees and knew that it would be another excruciating wait for our bills. We mentally tallied our tab, and left cash on the table, with zero gratuity and walked out into the drizzly evening, never to return. My first and definitely last visit to True Confections for sure. Staff need to be trained to work more efficiently with whatever resources were on hand to ensure a smooth operational flow from start to finish for customers. Whoever is the Owner/Manager needs to review each step of their business process as there are obvious holes in it and there are tons of room for improvement. Service cannot get any worse than what we experienced tonight. Good grief! read more

This is one of the places I always take my out of town guests. It never fails to impress! This time I orderd the pumpkin cheesecake, it was probably the best I have ever had. Creamy with the perfect spice balance. The ginger cookie crust added a nice crunch to it. $6.75 for the portion I recieved is not expensive. Service is always very friendly and helpful for those who can't decide on a dessert. They've been in Vancouver 25 years, must be doing something right! read more

Bad service, very rude waiter who did not let us sit because we ordered a whole cake, even tho we ordered drinks just so we could sit to have the cake. They would not add a chair to a table or push tables together to let us sit more people, instead we had to wait for a table and they didn't let us stand in front to look at the cakes, they asked for us to stand in the corner. Had the worst experience here tonight with a door dash. The door dash deliverer was amazing, quick and friendly. However, when we opened we were missing an item and the manager Hoon said there was nothing he could do to assist. It was up to me to call doordash and get a refund, After lots of arguing I was lucky that when I texted the door dash, Matthew, instead of saying it wasn't his problem he went back to the store. I heard him while I was arguing with the manager. He took it upon himself to go back and get my missing item. I told True Confections they should pay him but he told us they did not. I was a little disappointed in their lack of pastry selections for something that is considered a dessert place, especially the few cake selections that they have. The cakes is alright here. My friend really liked her chocolate piece though I thought it was just ok. My angel food cake was heavy on the layers of cream and I couldn't tell the difference between cake vs cream texture. The service was bad here. They never sat us down until we asked the staff to. He thought we were getting takeout(no that's not why we stood at the wait to be seated sign). The server never came to take or order we had to tell the host while he was seating other people. Drinks were never refilled nor were we checked on the entire time. My friend even had to walk her leftover cake to the front to get packed up and the bill. I'm not sure if they expect you to raise your hand or yell for service, perhaps they'd do better with those service call buttons at each table but they need some help! What a disappointment =( My wife and I had taken some delicious desserts to go from here a couple of times before, so this time we decided to stay and enjoy them with some coffee. What a disaster. The place had only 5 busy tables and yet it took more than ten minutes for someone to take our order (a couple who got there after us, had their order taken before). We specifically asked if they had pecan pie, they said yes, so we ordered that, a slice of cake and a couple of Americanos. More than 15 minutes later, other tables were already having their milkshakes and other kinds of beverages and desserts and we were still waiting for our two simple cups of coffee and our slice of cake and pie. I went to the cashier and asked if there was a problem and he unapologetically explained that a bunch of people had come in at the same time and it was taking them longer to fulfill every order. They finally brought or coffees but...no pie or cake. When I asked the waiter about it, he had no idea of what we had ordered and then he informed us that they were out of pecan pie. We decided to share the carrot cake. I also had to chase the waiter to ask for Splenda (they brought only 2 envelopes, god forbid we should use more) and a couple of teaspoons, to... you know... stir our coffee & cream. The second waiter was nice and he apologized for the wait and mishaps. Maybe they had a bad day, but it was a terrible experience for us. Evidently, they can't handle more than 4 tables without going crazy. I guess it'll be "take out" only from his place. read more

Heard about this place, one day I drove past and thought I'd buy a slice to go and try it for once. I bought a slice of milk chocolate hazelnut cake for 8.95, $9.4 tax included. Got home and realize their portions is not very generous at all for the price. Yes, their cake is quite tall but the slice I got was merely 3cm wide on the outside. The cake itself was ok, not amazing, not horrible, it's what you'd expect for a regular generic slice of chocolate cake. For the price, it is totally not worth it. Won't be back again for sure. First things first: the cake was fantastic. No complaints there! I had their vanilla cake; The Diplomat, I believe. It was flawless. Perfectly moist cake. Perfectly smooth buttercream. Delicious. My major complaint was the service. I went with two friends of mine and we were literally the only customers in there. And STILL it took 5 minutes for them to seat us. Insanity. Then it took 25 minutes to take our order, followed by a 15 minute wait for them to slice the cake. Despite the deliciousness of the cakes, I will likely not go back. Sorry. read more

Went here a while ago with my partner because we'd been working hard and I had a hankerin' for some really good cake. We waited a week for this. For a place that specializes in desserts, it was pretty disappointing. My cake had good flavours and the buttercream icing was really nice, but one side of the slice was dry - I assume because it was kept in a cooler all day. When I make cake I like to keep a sheet of saran wrap along the edges where the cake was cut - that way it stays moist. It was hard to get around the dryness. I wanted to pour my latte over it. This was REALLY disappointing... It was a $9 slice of cake. For $9, and for a place that ONLY does desserts, this should be the most amazing piece of cake ever. Oh well. Service wasn't great. The guy didn't greet us - we had to ask if we could just seat ourselves. He brought us some menus and never came back, so we went to the front to order. Is that custom? Maybe there should be a sign or a note at the top of the menu. I didn't get my drink until halfway through the cake-eating, and we weren't visited again. Had to go up to the front to pay because we had no idea if he was coming back. The kicker is that the place was EMPTY. Completely empty.
