    Truckee River

Very clean river walk, the Arlington bridge is nice with new lights. Very nice area to walk around

Very nice! Where on Earth Earth have I been?! Not Reno!! that's for sure... At least not for about 10 to 15 years. I don't remember the area around the river back being this nice... Either I completely skipped it or just never realized it. I found the Truckee Riverwalk to be a pleasant surprise the first time I saw it, at least the first time I think I saw it in 2019! Also didn't realize the Riverwalk had been around for a bit. I thought it was fairly new...wrong again! Truckee Riverwalk history: "The Riverwalk Today Reno's Downtown Riverwalk District is typically defined as the area spanning the Truckee River between Arlington Avenue and Lake Street. The modern-day Riverwalk features over three dozen restaurants, pubs, nationally recognized museums, and galleries, retail shops, boutiques, salons, restaurants, lounges, and unique locally owned retailers. The Northern end of the Riverwalk District along First Street between Lake St. (East) and Arlington St. (West) overlooks Reno 's beautiful Truckee River where few buildings of the past still reside, such as the Hughes Porter building, Colonial Apartments, and the Twentieth Century Club. Reno 's very popular Truckee River Whitewater Park runs directly through this area offering visitors a variety of fun outdoor activities." - https://renoriver.org/history/ Been back a couple of times now. Glad it's there... I didn't realize it was called the Truckee Riverwalk because the Truckee River... lol. duh! Then again, I didn't know the name of the river. (Defense of my ignorance). I was curious about the Whale statue and why it was there, I had to look up the significance. According to the website: "Description: The Space Whale is a full scale stained glass humpback whale mother and calf. A monumental testament to family, our relationships with nature, time and space and our responsibility to preserve our environment. Originally appearing as the Keyhole project at Burning Man 2016, The Space Whale now lives in front of City Hall in Reno, NV. Interested in acquiring your own Space Creature? Contact artist Matt Schultz." - https://renoriver.org/listing/space-whale/ I didn't know it was called the Space Whale. I hope to spend a bit more time around that area, especially when the weather is nice.

Riverwalk strolling in January at 59 degrees weather was not a bad idea. The walk took us about an hour with several time stops for taking pictures and a short coffee break. Tall old trees lined up, quaint houses nearby and cute looking offices and not to mention the sound of the river gushing was a perfect break we needed. Would love to do this again!

During the sunny summer days, this place is the ideal spot for a stroll with your furry friend, a delightful lunch, and some much-needed relaxation.

we walk our doggies down the river walk a few times a week. We walk right from our front door. Its nice hearing the rushing of the water and during the summer seeing rafters rafting down. Theres ducks around the water, beautiful million dollar homes along the walk. Ending at the Wingfield Park. I get kisses on each bridge crossing from my guy which is special

    Bravery is rewarded with treats!

"If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water!" As we wander around downtown, this "little city within a city," all roads lead to the Truckee River eventually. One must get out and see the sights, while wandering we came to water. Imagine that which you can discover while just meandering around. Gorgeous bridge after bridge you pass with flowers hanging down. Tranquility and serenity surround you. How peaceful these moments have been as we walk along this river walk? This river may seem peaceful and calm but turn your back on it and you could have some water in your own back yard. The river over the past 100 years has gone over its banks. In 2017, the water swept through actual Reno. In 1997, the Truckee River sent its waves through most of the buildings that have been redone all along the River walk. In the early 1900s, Lewis Hinkley built an amusement park on park of a man created portion of the lake for people to gather. It was equipped with a 60 foot Ferris wheel, other carnival rides, an out door stage, and dancing platform. This portion of the Truckee River, called Belle Isle is now a glimpse to better days gone, but trees have replaced the screams of joy as the Ferris wheel no longer exists. A sense of transition to tranquility has been replaced as you can watch nature happen all around you. Many animals call this river it's home: beavers, squirrels, ducks, geese needing a break from their flights, bunnies, butterflies, and some many more that were not mentioned. Stop for a while. You can walk on the designated paths along the water front. You can get down close enough to the water to even feed the ducks. In fact each day we visited the ducks were expecting us. Sit for a while as the ducks come right to your hand and take the treats you have for them. In Paris, on the Seine River, you can lock your forevers and love for eternity. Leave a piece of yourself, or for couples a symbol of your happiness for all to see. Then throw the keys into the river. While we did not place a lock, next year the symbols of those that have been here are sweet. Enjoy the serenity and joy from those that have been here prior. It's time to ride, walk, scoot and see some beautiful scenic views. Walk with me along the River front. Follow it all the way to Sparks, then back again. As the flowers bloom, the seasons will pass you by, day by it this is one of Reno's best moments to experience and explore.

Cool walk in downtown. It may be the best thing in Reno. The Truckee River flows through the city and there's parks and paths along this. Good place to get exercise. You can also just sit and relax. It can be fun to get a kayak and paddle or float. In this part of the river, you can get in and ride along it. There's rapids in the area downtown near Wingfield Park. Even if you don't want to get in the water, you can watch many people who choose to get in. The Riverwalk goes almost all the way from Idlewild Park to the Virginia Street bridge, and there's some good spots. A lot of businesses and restaurants are connected. If the weather is nice take a stroll along it. There's a lot of good stuff.

Beautiful walk in Downtown Only downside is the trash- hopefully that will change as the new upgrades start happening. There are so many beautiful buildings that just need TLC. The Glow Plaza looks great- Love the River!

This place is a must visit if ever in Reno. It's a basically a pedestrian path next to a river where a lot of people are playing in. The river itself is quite spectacular. The water seems pretty clean and not dangerously fast flowing so it almost acts like a natural outdoor (and free) swimming pool. Saw some people in tubes sliding down from the top of the trail to the bottom, which seems like fun! The views are also spectacular with the greenery surrounding the river. So many people also just lounging around in the surrounding areas enjoying the sun and cool breeze. Overall, love this spot in Reno. Next time I come, will definitely be in a bathing suit and a tube to ride down the riverwalk!

    Careful rescue.

The beauty potential: 10/10 The potential to be as cool as Austin's Riverwalk or others. 8/10 The sketchy elements that ruin it. 2/10 The usable parts of the Riverwalk that I would feel good about sending my little sister and her family maybe 5/10. Aggressive panhandlers, reckless skateboarders, pot smoking outdoors in public, and dozens of homeless people that "own" property there (or at least they act like you are trespassing when you enter their space) that would have to fixed to make this a true classy public space.

The Riverwalk is located in downtown along the Truckee river. It passes by Wingfield park, numerous restaurants and bars, and provides a gorgeous view of the tree lined river. Along the walk, you may see folks lounging in the park, fishing in or on the banks of, the river, strolling, or maybe getting a little exercise. We even saw a guy in a wetsuit snorkeling! You never know what you'll find in downtown...

One of the spot that I stubbed upon looking for things to do in Reno. When we found it, first impressions was, is this it. I was expecting more restaurant and bars line up along the walk way. Or maybe it was I parked to far up. Anyhow, stated off walking along the walkway. The Truckee river as it is runs through an area of Reno. Hence the Riverwalk. They had someone kayaking when we were there. Cute little area to just chill and relax. Walked up a bit and finally came to a section or strip where restaurants and bars were. I felt like it was only that area near the main bridge in the heart of Reno. I could be wrong as we didn't venture out any further. They had a couple of restaurants and gastropub that looked pretty cool. Not bad for a place to bring kids and walk around. The gastropub or pizza place as it was had a cool vibe and seemed very kid friendly. Beside that, the Riverwalk area. Something to do for an hour or so. Grab lunch, have a seat and people watch.

Ask the Community - Truckee Riverwalk

Where shall i park if i want to visit this area? I will be coming from Sparks.

The river walk actually goes through Sparks starting at Veteran's Parkway. However, for the best of the Reno part park at Crissie Caughlin Park and walk or bike ride into downtown and back.

Can you ride bikes on the riverwalk in Reno?

Yes. I bike that trail all the time. It actually goes from sparks to west reno

No outside watercraft are allowed! This is to protect and preserve the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that are native to this habitat. Outside watercraft are risky because they may unknowingly transport foreign mollusks that are detrimental to the health of the trout living there. If fishing waders are used, there is a wader scrubbing/washing station located at the registration area. There are Nature Conservancy staff people on site if you have further questions. I found them informative and helpful. The loaner kayaks are located to the left side of the lake. The ones on the right side are for staff members. Every other week, ~only~ the kayaks are allowed out. Call to check the calendar schedule to avoid disappointment if you want to use one of the motorized boats. They require a motorized boater's card {available online at https://www.boat-ed.com/california/) There are single person and tandem person sit-on-top kayaks available. after 8AM Thursdays through Sundays. Loaner PFDs are also available in standard sizes. I recommend getting there early morning after opening while the water is calm. I was told that later in the day, the wind can pick up. This makes paddling a kayak to get backk across a lot more difficult. You may fish using barbless hooks. Only artificial lures are permitted. All trout caught must be released. Kokanee salmon are an invasive species here. Fishermen are allowed to keep those. Limit 5 per day, or 10 per trip, total. No live bait. There is no overnight camping on the Conservancy's grounds. There are campgrounds at nearby Webber Lake and Lake of the Woods.

How cool and inclusive is that? You get to Independence Lake Preserve from highway 80 by heading north on 89 and then turning L at the "Little Truckee Summit OHV/Snowmobile" area, which is on a road labeled "07." It's the turn you'd take if you wanted to go to the Mt. Lola trailhead or Webber Lake Campground, which are also nearby. You'll need an offroad capable vehicle to make it over a water crossing and two miles of rocky road. There are lots of signs that explain that no watercraft are allowed, because Independence Lake is one of the two places in the world with a wild, self-sustaining lake population of Lahontan cutthroat trout. That's why they care so much about not letting folks put their own watercraft on the lake: they might unintentionally introduce invasive species. When we pulled up (with a canoe on our Jeep: we didn't know the rules beforehand), a ranger came out to verbally explain things to us and to let us know about the free kayaks to use. I was pleasantly surprised that there were not a lot of bugs out in July 2022. The last time we were in this area, which was maybe July three years ago, there were so, so, so many bugs. We came armed with bug spray but didn't need it! There are hiking trails around the preserve as well. The lake is large and beautiful, and the view of Mt. Lola is spectacular.

Five stars for Capt. Andrew and The Professor!…read more I've lived in Reno since 2008 and never knew anyone who really fished Lake Tahoe. As my kids have come to enjoy fishing, I've found myself looking for new experiences we can share, so when we found ourselves in the area for Spring Break, my wife and I booked this trip for all of us. I'd been following Andrew on social media for about a year, so he was my first call. From his consistent presence online and catches, I could tell that he knew the lake, ran a tight ship, and knew how to get on the fish, so we booked individual seats (nearly had a private boat) and met him at Round Hill Pines for a 7:30am departure. Andrew had the whole boat ready to roll with a well full of live bait, rods rigged for a variety of approaches, and a game plan on where we'd be going and what we'd be doing. Upon my request, he gave us a deep dive on what we were doing, how the fish would react, what to look for, how to fight them and anything else you might want to know about the lake and fishery. We trolled live baits and caught big lake trout. It was fun to tend the rods under his command and even more fun watching the kids faces light up as these large freshwater fish took the baits and eventually came over the rails. Andrew was awesome at making sure everyone had a great time and got on the fish. The kids really loved his high energy and fed into helping him "run the boat". The icing on the cake was eating the fish themselves. I had heard these lake trout weren't good eating but that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, this is THE reason to get on this boat IMHO. I'm stoked to have a few more meals left in the freezer and looking forward to another trip for more. BEST OF ALL... if the fish aren't biting you're still getting a cruise on Lake Tahoe, which can run about the same on one of the larger yachts!
