There is an entrance on both sides of the building. They have outdoor seating on one side. There was a lady in front of me who appeared to be a regular. My wait to order was brief. I told the cashier it was my first time there. She couldn't give me any solid recommendations as "I'm very picky" and "eat at the same restaurants" but "this isn't one" LOL. She added "I just work here." That gave me pause. I don't know many people who work at a food establishment that haven't had their food... especially if you work as a cashier. She did give some recommendations and I opted for a burger as she mentioned they are prepared and cooked fresh vs frozen patties. I ordered a Double bacon cheeseburger (with bbq sauce) with hush puppies and a sweet tea at 3:12pm. It was a little over $13. They take orders on a traditional order pad. I was given the bottom with a number when my order was ready. I was given a cup of ice to get my own drink. The sweet tea was PERFECT, Southern style sweet tea. They do have unsweetened tea and lemonade along with foundation drinks. My order was ready at 3:17pm, which was fairly quick. While seating, I noticed many tables were dirty and not cleaned, even though they were empty and had been for a while. The floor wasn't the clean either as I noticed trash and dirty under the tables and in the walking areas. I sat at the table by the TV. When looking up at it, I could tell it was dirty and hadn't been cleaned in a while. My hush puppies were hot and delicious. When I unwrapped my burger, I immediately noticed my bun was cold, which was disappointing. It was also dry... The patties were a decent temperature but the cold buns threw things off, for me. It looked and tasted like it was cooked well done. They didn't ask what temperature I wanted it cooked and it's likely because they may not know how to prepare the various styles. Most of the staff were young, likely teens or early 20s. I did see an older gentleman as well. I saw one staff scratching/rubbing his beard and his arm along with being on his phone in the food service/area. I saw another person scratching his neck and back. I didn't see either of them wash their hands afterwards. I was present when another order came in. The former put on one glove and began preparing the food... without washing hands. Apparently, there is no designated area for eating or drinking as I watched the staff do as they please around the kitchen. Honestly, they shouldn't be eating in the kitchen anyway... It was very unsanitary and I wished I hadn't witnessed the things that I did as I was eating. Staff need more training on food safety. Dining room needed attention and cleaning but staff opted to be in a circle and chit chat in the kitchen during down time. It wasn't busy at all during my 40 minutes there. With current operating procedures and practices, I do not and would not recommend this place. I don't plan on returning if I'm in the area again.

The Columbian Bakery+Restaurant has operated in this same storefront for around 20 years but I have never stopped in. I am not particularly familiar with Columbian-style foods and I did not feel there was anything that I would like from their "bakery". Boy, I do not think I have ever been more wrong about anything in my life...memories of past boyfriends start to creep in slowly-haha! I am currently obsessed with Statesville's Columbian Bakery+Restaurant! Yes, I said it! Not slightly obsessed, completely obsessed! I have patronized this business twice this week already and I plan to go there again before the weekend is over! The food is amazingly and authentically appetizing! To date, I have experienced the yummy goodness that is their Beef Empanadas, Tostones, Maduros, and my current foodie crush, Pan de Bonos. Each and every food item is fresh made to order except of course, for the bakery items BUT the bakery items are fresh made daily. The Beef Empanadas are a little meat-filled hand pie and they are so delicious! The pie consists of a thin cornmeal-type crust wrapped around the meat filling then deep fried. The meat filling is finely chopped or minced beef with small bits of potato (another reviewer said, beans, idk which it is but they're delicious) mixed in. It sounds heavy but it is actually quite light because the consistency of the filling is so fine and the outer crust is so thin. These yummies are so good, you cannot eat just one! The Tostones are smashed and fried green plantains. These are a salty side which taste like potatoes and they pair very well with the empanadas. The Maduros are fried ripe plantain chunks. I have had these before at other Latin restaurants and I do love them! The maduros from Columbian Bakery+Restaurant did not disappoint! They are just as good as any I've had and maybe just a little better because they are so fresh when you get them! These are a sweet side with just a hint of tartness. They pair well with any of the spicy foods served at this restaurant but I always eat them as a dessert! My favorite, the Pan de Bonos, are a bakery item but I was lucky enough to stop by when pan after pan of these little delectable puff balls were coming out hot and fresh from the oven. Yesssss! Who doesn't love a light and fluffy cheese bread ball?!? Cheese and Bread! Sign me up every time! But not to worry these addictive little things reheat really well in the microwave. I know because I ordered a dozen on my last visit! I cannot wait to go back to this Columbian paradise right in the heart of Statesville and try out more of their food offerings!
