I have a great fondness for authentic German food and drink. They're good to begin with, they're quite filling, and they remind me of the good times that came with being stationed in Bavaria as a young soldier. Think of it as a taste of my first home away from home. There aren't all that many places in North Carolina to get my fix of Deutsche Küche, so it was nice to find one that was new to me in -- of all places -- little ol' Troutman. Bavarian Kitchen is something I'd instead expect to find in a major metro area, but here it was hidden along the small town's main drag. The crowds moving in and out throughout my visit suggest that plenty of other people already knew about what a pleasant experience this is. As I was visiting alone, it made sense for me to take a spot at the bar rather than taking up a whole table to myself. Besides, I knew sampling the beer early on would help give me some hint as to whether this spot was the real deal. A half-maß of Paulaner Hefe helped convince me quickly. I then went with a more Swiss approach to my meal, choosing a style of schnitzel more commonly found in that neighboring nation, stuffed with cheese, ham and mustard. This "leckerli" was delicious indeed, as were the Spätzle noodles that accompanied it. Normally the dish comes with a side salad, but I also have a love of German-style red cabbage, so I asked for the Rotkraut instead, and it was among the best I've had in years. I chose to spoil myself a little after the main meal by adding a bit of cherry schnapps and a helping of apple strudel to my order. These were good as well. Service was a bit slow sometimes at the bar, which did not seem to be the case out in the dining room, as I saw the waitresses moving quickly all night. Also worth noting, the bartender struggled with his knowledge of German -- even though all the menu items are identified by their German names. "Kirschwasser -- is that a kind of beer?," he asked about my after-dinner drink order. If you're gonna work at a place that emphasizes authenticity, you should probably strive to learn the terminology. And these stumblings in service quality are the only things keeping me from a fifth star. Reservations seem like a wise move here, especially since my experience suggests the quality of service may be better when seated at a table. And this spot definitely seems deserving of your attention if, like me, you're a fan of good German eats and beer. read more

Awesome food, service and great atmosphere! Been wanted to go here for a few months but could never convince the wife because she didn't think she like any German food. Well finally convinced her to give it a try and we loved it! The Hefeweizen was great in to start! We got the feta with olives, tomatoes and pepperoncini appetizer and the German pretzel both were great. My son got the Jagersnitzel with fries, I got the Swiss yummy and wife got the Cordon Blue snitzel and all were great. We showed up and the place was packed. No reservations either so I assumed I was headed for a Domino's run. Fortunately, our very lovely and energetic host offered we could sit at the bar. I'm glad we did. The food is very authentic. At least as I remember it when I was stationed there. Very nice pretzel with hot mustard to start. The schnitzel is thin and well fried. Even with the mushroom gravy on top it stayed crispy the whole way through the meal. Mashed potatoes or champ would have been better but the spatzle was nice. The sausage and sauerkraut was nice but I feel my wife missed out on the schnitzel... Best of all was the service. They were half staffed and our hostess was flying around the room but always had time to stop by the bar and chat.. This was a perfect date night experience for my wife and I. The food is as authentic Bavarian food as you can get in the Lake Norman area. The pork roast with dumpling was delicious and tender. It was as good as what I had in Rothenburg a few months ago. There was a lot of it so I took leftovers home and it was just as good the next day. Husband enjoyed the hefty portion of Gypsy Schnitzel. Both entrees came with a side salad. Really enjoyed the German beer. Restaurant was booked full so it was a bit noisy on the Friday we were there. Ambiance was lively. Reservations are strongly recommended. If you walk in without one, you get seated at the bar if there's room. Service was outstanding. Our server had great timing, would pass by to check on us regularly but was never intrusive. Parking can be limited since it's a shared lot with multiple businesses so you might have to drive around to find a space. We parked in front of the pawn shop and walked the length of the lot to the restaurant. We enjoyed our visit greatly and would love to return. read more

The red cabbage had too much vinegar, the meat was tougher than what I expected after reading past reviews. The gravy in my opinion did not go with the meat. It was too thick. In closing, the strudel was my biggest disappointment. The pastry was too tough and too few apples. I base my opinion on other German restaurants I have visited. My husband, 2 year old, and I came in for lunch. My daughter requested sausages for lunch, so German was the perfect spot! We were greeted by Julie, who sat and served us. She was very kind and polite. The dining room is gorgeous. All the tables and chairs are beautiful wood. Its almost like you're sitting inside a little cottage. My husband and I are not very big drinkers l, but wanted to drink, and Julie was a great help is suggesting drinks for us. She brought my husband a German pilsner and German sweet red wine for myself. Both were fantastic! The owner came out and let her know that my daughter could order chicken fingers and fries if she wanted, even though its not on the menu. He was very polite as well. We thanked him for the offer but that we came here because she wanted sausages, he was surprised and pleased! We ordered from their lunch menu. We started with the cheese dip and pretzels. This cheese dip was a creamy brie base with lots of seasoning and onions. The pretzels were warm and soft. Great start to our meal. I ordered the schnitzel sandwich with potato salad, my husband the meatloaf sandwich with potato salad, and my daughter the 2 brats with fries. My schnitzel was absolutely delicious. I haven't had such good schnitzel in a long time! It came on a little roll and honestly it didn't need it at all! My husband's dish was more of a surprise to us. When he ordered he (and I) were thinking a more traditional (American) type of meatloaf. This was more like a thick cut slice of bologna or spam. Located in a Strip Mall off Main Street in Troutman, this charming little restaurant is quite busy. Although they have a large menu, all but two items are made with pork. The fried pounded pork dishes are all very large portions. Most people take half of their meal home. French Fries came with our meals but we optioned too have spaetzel instead. We did not like The Jägerschnitzel made with veal at all it was very tough and the breading thicker than the meat and spices were not there! Also, the gravy had no taste and there wasn't much of it. Considering the distance that we were driving we secured a reservation before we left home, We saw one table get seated without reservations and then people were being turned away. The dining area filled up quickly. I now know why the place is so popular. We were quickly seated once we arrived. A server dressed in a uniform modeled after traditional German attire introduced herself and took our orders. She did a great job of revealing the daily special and making recommendations from the menu and bar. Our meal started with a cold plate consisting of an iceburg salad, cucumber salad, German potato salad, and kraut salad. All were good. Our main dishes arrived in a reasonable amount of time. I chose to get the daily special- it was roasted pork with gravy and a dumpling. The portion size was huge. It was really good. My dinner date ordered Jaeger schnitzel with spaetzel. It was topped off with nice helping of gravy. Delicious gravy. The atmosphere is pleasant. The decor is really cute. Even the restroom is decorated nicely. Everything seems to be extremely clean. Fantastic quality-to-price ratio and is worth a detour to check out if you're nearby. We arrived and the place was packed (Saturday night in Oktober... but it seemed like there were regulars) yet luckily our party of two was able to be squeezed in. I wasn't very excited for German food but I left convinced the minute the first bites of food arrived: salad Salad... not an appealing description on the menu but the "three salad salad combo" worked. The salads are plated in a way that allows you to choose your own adventure (I chose going from the green salad, to the carrot, and ending with the heaviest... potato) I was happy that I was able to have a low-carb gluten-free meal of sausage, salad, and Kraut. I didn't know the sausage+kraut came with EXTRA potato salad, and I am unsure if the potato salad could be subbed, but I can't see them saying no to subbing it for another salad or even extra kraut. Considering the sausages weren't greasy, this would be a pretty healthy and balanced meal. The wine by the glass is rather impressive... more than the beer and more than many places that market themselves as "wine" bars/etc. As a wine geek, I was very happy to have some cheap but CORRECT German pinot noir. Had I done one of the multi-course options I would have loved to go through the rieslings and pair them. I wonder why the restaurant doesn't offer this??? read more

Well, I have to say our experience at this restaurant was a disaster. Just going to rattle them off: waitress was unfamiliar with the food she was serving, she brought out 2 pretzels that were obviously sitting out for a while and said she would bring more of which we had to request them 3 times. We waited almost 30 minutes for her to even take our main course order and an hour later it came out. The food wasn't even hot, it was luke warm like it had been sitting on the counter for 20 minutes. How does that happen? The chicken nuggets for my daughter were worse than McDonald's chicken nuggets. The spaetzle was sub-par...just noodles and butter....no cheese or flavor to them. I asked to replace the cabbage with spaetzle and she got that wrong too. We hardly ate a bite and ended up boxing it up. She never even asked how our food was. All the tables around us were talking back and forth about how terrible the wait and the food was. All of the tables around us, including myself, had lived in Germany or from Germany and know the quality expected with authentic German dishes. This was close but no cigar! They weren't short on staff as there were plenty of people working that night. Never experienced that before and won't be experiencing that again. read more

The real deal! The spaetzle is made daily and everything tastes just like being in Bavaria. I ordered the cheese spaetzle entree, which was sooo cheesy. My husband ordered the sauerbraten, which was absolutely delicious. The side salad comes with lettuce, potato salad, carrot salad, and bean salad. It was like being transported back home. The new owners use family recipes and take great care that everything comes out perfect. The service is friendly and personable. I cannot believe such an awesome German restaurant exists in Troutman! Seriously a sleeper classic! Huge portions, and totally authentic (as far as I know). This place is always crowded, so go at an off time to be seated quickly. The menu is big, but really only has schnitzel for dinner entrees. There is no chicken or beef here (maybe a few offerings on kids menu) but just know, when you come here, you'll probably have to get schnitzel. Good news is it is fabulous. We love the spreads served with pickled veggies and pretzel rolls. Be warned, the bread is served cold. The salads are fresh, and the fries are fantastic. I LOVE the Jaeger Schnitzel. Cooked to crispy perfection, but not overdone. We saw lots of folks having a beer in the huge steins, so fun! Inside is really beautiful and almost transports you to the old country. was thinking about going up north for burgers and fries and stuff but coming here instead was one of my better decisions lately ;-) ordinarily the Bavarian Kitchen requires reservations but not when dining at the bar, no guarantee of getting served but there you go... the original plan was to be on the road for a while so black coffee and iced water were my beverage choices with dinner; asked about the special and was told 'schnitzel under a garlic cream sauce with parmesan fries' which sounded pretty special so I went with that :-) sipping on my americano and watching the weather when out comes a plate of salads: cabbages, potatoe, and greens; bright and lightly dressed and a pleasant surprise on an otherwise dark and blowy evening. finished up as the schnitzel came out, a generous portion covering a plate load of cheesed up fries beside a bit of greens for good measure. pronounced garlicky goodness played nice with lightly breaded delicate porks and added another layer of savor to the parm'ed and fritted pommes. reasonableness is the better part of motoring so I took half my meal with me when I changed course and headed home rather than into the wind, rain, and falling temps in hill country. read more

I have been looking forward to going here for a couple weeks now and it did NOT disappoint!! From our amazing server to the spectacular food, this was a truly awesome dining experience that I cannot wait to repeat. If you haven't had German food before, this is the place to get your feet wet. Things you must get: a liter of beer, the giant pretzel, schnitzel (we ordered three different ones and they were all fantastic - you can't go wrong!), the fries AND the spaetzle. Oh, and don't forget about dessert - I don't care how full you are, if you don't get dessert, you'll regret it (especially when they have homemade, fresh baked cakes your can't find anywhere else and I truly mean that). This meal was so.good. and not one you rush. Main dishes take 30-40 minutes (did I mention getting the pretzel?) but that's very normal - meals are meant to be an opportunity to enjoy time with your family and friends and we definitely did. We did not have reservations, and they were crowded on a weekday evening. The hostess offered us seats at the bar. I was born in Germany and rarely find authentic cuisine from the motherland. We recently relocated to the area and this was my first visit to the Bavarian Kitchen. The menu was extensive and everything sounded great. The bartender kindly made some recommendations and I tried one. The Jager Schnitzel, which is pork under a mountain of fries and smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce. Service was excellent and the food plentiful and delicious. I took enough home for a second meal the next day. Heard from a coworker the sauerkraut and potato salad were excellent and I look forward to trying them on my next visit. Would've liked to have sampled one of the many desert offerings, but was just too full from dinner. Next time for sure! read more
