Sea bass in back and beef stroganoff in front
    Erica L.

Our dinner here was absolutely amazing. Fun authentic ambiance and delicious food. My husband's sea bass was out of this world, so much flavor and cooked perfectly! The beef stroganoff was equally as flavorful and so filling I took half of it home. 100% I would recommend getting their original "house salad" which is authentic to Austria/german cultures and comes with cucumbers, tomato's, cabbage, and potatoes salad! An extra bonus was their cinnamon ice cream to end the night. We will definitely be back!

Had the best pasta scallops dish I ever enjoyed. Chef Gabriel Cobb created a master piece. The infused garlic cream with a heavenly smokey flavor from Pancetta. Finish with early peas for the sweet pop.

What a hidden gem! Gerhard's Cafe totally surprised me. You walk in and feel like you've been transported to a cozy little tavern deep in the heart of Europe -- definitely not what you'd expect from a spot in a strip mall in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The service was fantastic. It was our first time here, and we had a lot of questions, but our server was super friendly and helpful, making sure we were comfortable with everything on the menu. I ordered the Farmer's Plate, and overall, it was a solid choice. The Swiss cheese knackwurst was a bit burnt on the outside, but the pork schnitzel was absolutely amazing (highly recommend that!). The mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from scratch, and the homemade sauerkraut added a nice touch to round out the meal. The pork chop is also another great choice. Pretty tender and very flavorful. I wasn't expecting to find such a charming spot tucked away in a strip mall, but Gerhard's definitely proved me wrong. I'll absolutely be stopping by again next time I'm in the area!

Oh Gerhard's this place was amazing! First off, the interior is so cool. We got to sit at a barrel table, which felt rustic and on brand. There were some great tables for larger parties, and I like how it felt like all of the tables had privacy from each other. My husband and I came during Spartanburg's restaurant week, so we got the three-course dinner! It came with an appetizer, salad, main entree, and a dessert. There was also bread and a yummy butter to start! Needless to say, food galore!! The stars of the show were the entrees and the desserts. Both the beef stroganoff and schnitzel were very well made. My husband didn't love the spatzle that came with the schnitzel, but I think that just comes down to preference. My favorite menu item and the one I recommend everyone gets when they come to Gerhard's is the lemon cake omg!! I wanted more! I told my husband I want a slice for my birthday - it had the perfect amount of lemon flavor and was just delicious. We loved Gerhard's!! Fun spot with great food! Adding it to my Spartanburg staples :)

Location Just off Main Street mid strip mall on right Parking Large nearby lot Atmosphere Austrian hunting house Food and beverage Large selection of wines and beer. Specialty pizzas-pizza this month is buffalo chicken. We had the schnitzel with sautéed veggies and the spring salad. The other salad has a potato salad base. Summary Local Spartanburg Austrian themed restaurant. Great food-excellent service!! Locally recommended! Love it!

Outstanding dinner. The menu was varied, offering traditional German dishes, seafood and steaks. We'll definitely be back.

My husband and I were impressed by the meat and cheese plate, that additionally included pickles, apricot jam, and dried cranberries; highly recommend choosing the German meats and cheeses, I was hesitant but they were delicious! For entrees we had the Rachel sandwich and the bratwurst, with sides of red cabbage and Brussels sprouts. I didn't finish the sandwich because of its size and took half to go. The sprouts were fresh and well seasoned, and my husband was still talking about the red cabbage a day later. The German beer list is extensive and the server recommended a couple to me, and let me taste before deciding which was helpful. The people who work here are kind and seem like a little family. In fact the owner came around at one point to individually cheers with people which was cute. We really enjoyed the warm intimate atmosphere and would love to go back.

Think of it as a taste of my first home away from home. There aren't all that many places in North Carolina to get my fix of Deutsche Küche, so it was nice to find one that was new to me in -- of all places -- little ol' Troutman. Bavarian Kitchen is something I'd instead expect to find in a major metro area, but here it was hidden along the small town's main drag. The crowds moving in and out throughout my visit suggest that plenty of other people already knew about what a pleasant experience this is. As I was visiting alone, it made sense for me to take a spot at the bar rather than taking up a whole table to myself. Besides, I knew sampling the beer early on would help give me some hint as to whether this spot was the real deal. A half-maß of Paulaner Hefe helped convince me quickly. I then went with a more Swiss approach to my meal, choosing a style of schnitzel more commonly found in that neighboring nation, stuffed with cheese, ham and mustard. This "leckerli" was delicious indeed, as were the Spätzle noodles that accompanied it. Normally the dish comes with a side salad, but I also have a love of German-style red cabbage, so I asked for the Rotkraut instead, and it was among the best I've had in years. I chose to spoil myself a little after the main meal by adding a bit of cherry schnapps and a helping of apple strudel to my order. These were good as well. Service was a bit slow sometimes at the bar, which did not seem to be the case out in the dining room, as I saw the waitresses moving quickly all night. Also worth noting, the bartender struggled with his knowledge of German -- even though all the menu items are identified by their German names. "Kirschwasser -- is that a kind of beer?," he asked about my after-dinner drink order. If you're gonna work at a place that emphasizes authenticity, you should probably strive to learn the terminology. And these stumblings in service quality are the only things keeping me from a fifth star. Reservations seem like a wise move here, especially since my experience suggests the quality of service may be better when seated at a table. And this spot definitely seems deserving of your attention if, like me, you're a fan of good German eats and beer.
