I'm a beginner when it comes to having fish. I started with a 3 gallon tank and upgraded to a 20 gallon recently. This was the fourth fish store that I've visited; it's always an interesting encounter having the store work with a novice. The store is dark with neon lights upon walking in. It was quiet, empty besides one person, and slightly intimidating. I ended up walking away with 3 shubunkin goldfish. I originally came in for one, but he chuckled and explained that they had a deal on goldfish. He had so much patience and understanding. He let me pick out my fish (but to the naked eye, I'm sure they all look the same). I took my time picking out the ones with the best physical traits. He was the fishing ninja! He scooped them up swiftly and quickly! He walked me around the store and showed me snails and other goldfish he had, before ringing me up. He explained me the tank process and the benefits of snails. He explained to me the different filters and what was the most suitable for my tank. He also asked how I acclimate my fish, then explained the proper way to do so. Honestly, I needed more support and explanations than the average customer, and I was a bit taken aback by the guy in the store. I realized that it's just completely his demeanor, and he wasn't trying to be unhelpful. If you're willing to care for his fish, he will explain and help you! The place is filthy. Coral is unhealthy and under fed and full of Aiptasia, bubble and long hair algae.The selection of fish is underwhelming. Saltwater is never consistent. Just bought saltwater and the salinity was at 1.021. I've also purchased RODI water and it has tested at 100 TDE. Seems like no one cares about anything there and they just sell to whoever is dumb enough to give them money. read more

If you're looking for a new aptasia to add to your fish tank this is the place! They have a massive collection of different aptiasias. Super healthy and thriving! There's a fish or 2 in there but honestly no big deal, you can hardly see them through the hair algae. read more

(She even brought the ice chest so she'd have something to sit on) 5 stars again! As always jason still has wonderful, healthy coral and fish. Hadn't been in over a year and was shocked when I walked in with the remodel. It looks great. So happy we decided to stop by. Thanks afain Yes Jason is a smart ass (sorry Jason ). But he knows his shit. He saved my tank. I have a small nano 20 gallon reef that is considered a Picasso tank. It has the best of the best in it and it got nuked, I thought I was going to loose everything. I didn't even loose a snail. His prices are great, fish are healthy. Store isn't cluttered which is deff a plus in my book because I hate small cluttered stores. He is one of the only shops around that carries Red Sea coral PRO water already mixed. And his partner in crime over there Sean knows what he's talking about as well, never a bad experience. And have never had a problem taking my clan of kids (3 of them) in there because I don't let them bang on tanks. read more

Walked in was kind of greeted by someone behind the desk, he did ask if had any questions to let him know. So when I did I asked about getting a simple fish for my daughter, but then I had another question about the crabs that were in another tank, his response was "that's salt water you asked about fresh water, you came in here asking about simple math but trying to learn calculus". Great way to get people excited about wanting to learn and BUY ANYTHING FROM YOU. Terrible attitude doesn't even look at you when he speaks to you. Super condescending. read more

Careful because he tries to pocket money off you. This happened two times to me WHEN PAYING CASH. I spent 8$ on a fish and gave him a 20$ bill. He tried to give me 2$ back. When I said something about me needing 12$ back (not2$ back) he tried to say I gave him a 10$ bill and not a 20$ bill. Then realized I gave him a 20$ bill after opening the register. The second time I had my girlfriend go in for me and sure enough he tried the same thing to her. Not sure what the deal is. But that's not how you do business. read more

Horrible conditions. Wonder what happened to this owner. When the store opened he was excited, happy to help customers, had a smile on his face. Now he, looks miserable and lethargic. His lack of interest in his store is reflected in every square inch of the store. The fish aquariums look disgusting. They are so filthy that the owner doesn't even turn all the lights on as to disguise the slime and carcass yards that fill them. The fish that are still alive are hanging on by a thread, evident by the "gasping" they all seem to be doing. The frag tanks are plagued with bubble algae and aptasia. I'd even be afraid to introduce anything from this store into my quarantine tank. Too bad, had such potential in the beginning. Perhaps the owner will read this review, take a look at himself, and reflect on how he can turn things around....before he has to close his doors for good. read more

This store is great, if you do not see a fish/item in stock the owner does the research and special orders it for you. The shop is clean and easy to walk around, the owner was not trying to sell me any items I couldnt use or fish I cannot keep successfully in my tank. Reasonable prices and great service. I've been going here since it opened and I've bought numerous fish, coral and dry goods from Jason. His selection is great as well as the prices. I go quite often now to get saltwater ( Red Sea Coral Pro) which is great quality and the right salinity unlike other fish stores around. He just placed a new display tank in the back which makes the place look great. The other comments you see are just nonsense Jason is a friendly guy that will help anyone and everyone. He won't sell you stuff you don't need or give you bad advice. He's been doing this long enough to know what works and what doesn't. read more

I've been coming here for a few years now. He helped me set up my first tank and dealt with every basic question I had to ask him, even over the phone. He helped me when it was time to upgrade to my large tank, from all of the plumbing questions and every other coral or fish question. Jason can come off as abrasive to the more sensitive crowd. That is because he is straight forward and doesn't BS you with bad information just to fill your tank and make him money. Don't walk into his store expecting a massive variety of fish and corals, there is just not a large enough demand in this area to support a huge store like that. His prices on fish and coral are very good. He also can try to match many internet prices if you need something ordered. A saltwater tank can not be set up in a week (or even a month) be careful where you get your info from. Support your local fish store. read more

Good selection of frags. It looks like he had plenty of fish, but I didn't really look. His 10 dollar frag section was buy 3 get 1 free, and he ended up throwing in a 5th one for free, too. They had plenty of color and looked healthy. I couldn't find any auptasia growing in his frag tank, which is awesome. The guy was friendly, too. He might be kind of quiet at first, but ask him a question and he'll get real amped up about his fish. He even offered to let us bring our dog in, which was great because I was stuck in the car with the pupper while my husband took photos from inside the store. There's some reviews that say he hates kids. I clearly can't speak for every incident, but there was a toddler in the store with his parents and the owner was pretty interactive with the little dude. The place has just been remodeled so the place have new display tank that are super nice and clean i just bought a beautiful hippo tang. I have been a loyal customer of this place for 5 years. Tropical reef sells healthy fish and for a good price. If you have not been here in awhile you need to stop in and see the new setup!!!! read more

Not sure I'd buy here. Unlike some of the other comments here, the owner was engaging and talked with us so that was not an issue. The tanks/fish however were. Lots' of algae and bacteria in the tanks and I also noticed a few fish twitching, running into the walls, and scraping themselves against objects in the tank. Signs of ick it looks like. It's too bad. The prices are good and he had a nice selection, but I would be scared to buy fish from those tanks. Update...I am updating my original review from 2 to 4 stars. Based on some other reviews, I decided to pay another visit for some corals. The owner was very helpful, and his corral selection is awesome. His $10 tank has some very nice frags that are doing great in my tank. Also got a very nice torch frag for only $30. His tanks looked pretty clean overall as well. Glad I gave this shop another shot. read more

Businesses like this one here let me know that there is still some hope for America. Especially California, the land of the liberals and politically correct. If a business like this one can stay alive, believe me, ANYONE can open up shop and be a successful business man/woman. Tanks look like crap, service is pretty much the same. At least have some pride in what you do and keep your tanks clean. Fish contaminated with ich etc. The list goes on. If the guy at least kept his tanks and his shop clean I would understand the prideful and arrogant demeanor. All in all, I do not recommend. Go elsewhere. read more

I went in to find probably 90% empty tanks. Guy behind the counter just sat there, not really talkative. Salt fish only. Had some coral stuff, but I just walked right out. I would not waste your time unless you are looking for a certain fish, I would call first before wasting your time. read more
