after ordering and paying, i saw a roach on the counter.. so i really didn't have much of an appetite for it after that anyways. i ordered brown stew chicken with rice and peas and a beef patty. the chicken was dry and didn't have any flavor for real, the gravy itself was kinda flavorless. my beef patty was also dry, honestly couldn't even eat it because it was like falling apart and the meat was burnt. i think in total, i took 4 bites of the entire meal. the 3rd and 4th were me trying to give it another chance. it just wasn't good. someone suggested i go here, so i had high hopes. brown stew and beef patties are my go to when it's my time of the month so to say i was upset is an understatement. you can do better than this guys. read more

I went a while back. The folks were super nice. Place was empty though so I didn't expect much. The chicken was great. Very flavorful jerk sauce, and the inside chicken was moist and flavorful. I'm not a fan of rice and beans so I wont comment. Maybe the location is bad because they should get more business. read more

I tried his place for the first time and I must say I was very happy with the way the food tastes. I had the oxtails and my husband had the curry goat. We both loved our food. Our order was to go so when the gentleman brought us the food he walked to the door in front of us and opened the door for us. read more

Tropical Diner - Caribbean Near Me - Katy, Texas

Being a Miami native, I was excited to find Caribbean cuisine so close to where I now reside. This place is truly a hidden pearl! I had the stewed chicken with peas and rice and I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was seasoned just right with a hint of spice, and it was so tender that it fell off of the bone. The peas and rice was cooked just right as well. Moist, not too soft, not sticky, definitely not hard, and well seasoned. The icing on the cake for me were the authentic Caribbean drinks! I love Ginger beer, and Pineapple and Ginger Juice. I'll definitely be a returning diner. read more

Being this place is near my house I really wanted to love it.. but I just "like" it. The staff are very friendly and the facility is clean, but the dishes I've tried left me disappointed (oxtails, jerk wings). The portions are the best I've had from any Jamaican food spot in Houston. The Beef patties are good and the rice and peas are excellent. read more

Yum yum yum. Timely delivery, well cooked food, glad I found you been missing you once I left New York. I ordered curry goat with rice and peas. Will definitely order again read more

Nice little mom and pop style Jamaican buffet dinner. Nice people but the Food and service were both a little disappointing. It wasn't a poor experience but certainly wasn't inspiring. read more

I am so excited that there is a really great Caribbean Restaurant near me! The food is fantastic and the staff is super friendly. I had their curry chicken dish and it was delicious and a lot of food! Me being from the Caribbean makes me home sick for our food so I am going to make this spot one off my favorites. read more

I tried this place as it is near where I work in Katy. I only had 2 items which were Curry Chicken Pattie & Coco Bread. The patties were good, however my only issue with them is there was not enough meat inside at all... Flavorful, YES, but the inside of a Pattie is supposed to have a lot of meat. These were filled with the soup and potatoes that you cook the curry chicken in. For example, if you make a pot of stew, you scoop out the meat, shred it, then add some of the veggies and juice/broth inside the Pattie. These patties filling were mushy as there was barley any meat in them. The flavor however was great! the coco bread was the first ive had in America. it was fresh, soft, and fluffy with a decent density! I would rate the coco bread 5/5 but the patties a 3/5 only because there literally was no meat inside. The pattie seems to be a TAD slightly over baked, but most places make patties in large batches, then freeze them for weeks (as they stay good in the freezer uncooked). Overall I would rate this place a 3.5 stars because what I had was good, there was just not enough meat in the Pattie whatsoever. The patties at Caribbean Cuisine are much fresher and better baked, but I will definitely give this place another try. read more

Came here with Ashlyn expecting the same jerk chicken we got in the caribbean and we were not disappointed! Loved the jerk pork, chicken and cabbage slaw. Didnt love the rice and beans but the small plate was HUGE!! I recommend you swing by. We missed the buffet that ends at 2:00, but we will be back. read more

Great food & service..the buffet is delicious & nutritious..2 thumbs up..support local business..

This is a no frills Resturant with excellent cuisine! The food is authentic and exceeds any other Caribbean Resturant that I've been to in the Houston area. It's definitely my new "go to" spot for Caribbean food. read more

PROS: Friendly staff and good food CONS: Hours say 11a-9p M-F, but they open at noon on Mondays. Waited for 30 mins to try the buffet, they only offer it on Tu-Th. Very disappointing. read more

Well I came here for the first time, on yelp it said that it was open. Walked up to the front door and the worker literally locked it and put up the closed sign in my face. In their defense, the posted hours on their doors did coincide with them closing when I walked up but 1) they need to get their yelp hours right and 2) I'd highly reconsider how they handled it for a first time customer smh I will not be returning for that simple fact. read more

Not good. Does not compare to other Jamaican restaurants I've had in the city. Totally missed the mark. When I went there the lady at the cashier was eating a plate of food and was not very polite. Nothing is worse than bad service then bad food. I ordered two beef patties...I swear, it was BAD. Tasted worse than I'd imagine dog food would taste like. read more

Best Caribbean/Jamaican restaurant in Houston hands-down. Very authentic. If you go to the Sunday brunch you'll get some real traditional Jamaican dishes that you usually won't find in your run-of-the-mill J-can restaurants. Cornmeal porridge, tripe and beans, stew peas and rice (with pork tail of course) , run down, cow foot etc. Also the head cook is excellent at adding Jamaican flavor to non-traditional dishes such as fried chicken, meatballs, chop suey, BBQ chicken, etc. I highly recommend this place. I prefer going for the buffets, but be pre-warned, not everything offered on the menu is on the buffet. If you want something not on the buffet you would have to order it from the menu. Oxtails are not on the buffet, but they are pretty good. read more

Absolutely wonderful Jamaican food and I have been to quite a few in the greater Houston area. The curry chicken and jerk chicken were perfectly seasoned and the staff were so welcoming and nice. They do a buffet from 12 to 2 on Tuesday thru Thursday so lucky me to find this place. The meatballs were the best ever hints of ginger and the gravy with the fresh peas and rice I could just eat them all day. I will definitely be coming back again! read more

Went In Today. Enjoyed The Buffet. They Had This Fried Chicken In A Ketchup Mixtured Sauce That My Husband Makes ALL The Time So I Was Overjoyed Lol Food Was Fresh And Authentic. Best kept secret...the food was amazing and the service even better. So happy I found this spot, new favorite!

Curry Goat is great. Jerk chicken had been sitting around too long and I wasn't crazy about the flavor. We had a chicken and beef meat patty. Ehhh. Not the best. Just ok. Would stop in just for the parties like other places. No fountain drinks. Pretty much self serve. read more

Tropical Diner - Order at the counter - Caribbean Near Me - Katy, Texas

Tasty Jamaican food in the heart of Katy. We ordered the jerk chicken which was extra spicy as expected with some cool greens and tasty rice and peas. We also ordered the bros stew for my kids which they totally enjoyed. I had the goat soup or as it is called goat head soup or manish water. Wow it was so tasty and I would definitely recommend it to any one. We also had their home made patties. Better than a regular beef pie. Try the curry chicken and beef read more

Wow awesome lunch buffet with everything you can think of. All of the goods of the Caribbean and Jamaican. Very nice people

My mom and I went here for lunch. I'm new to Katy so I was excited to see a Jamaican restaurant in Katy. I ordered Oxtails and rice and peas. My mom ordered stew Fish with rice and peas. The food presentation look amazing, but our food lacked seasoning and spices. The plantain was cooked perfectly. I won't return. read more

We are Jamaicans & our family gets dinner from them quite often. This is the real deal, the setting & the food is authentically Jamaican. They make the best fried dumplings! We love all their food choices but if we had to pick one, it would be their red peas soup. We never know what to do with ourselves when we go to their Sunday brunch as it offers everything including my husband's favorite breakfast item - cornmeal porridge! We catered for a small party recently where we were the only Jamaicans present & everyone asked for take home containers after eating their 'belly full'. We will always support Tropical Diner as it is always satisfy our regular cravings for 'yard food'. read more
