Ok Rosenberg! This is the 3rd hidden gem in that area I've found recently. I did a door dash so I can't speak to the facility or service but the food is good! My go-to Jamaican dish is either brown stew chicken or curry chicken so I got both. They were both quite tasty but if I had to give one the edge I'd say the brown stew chicken. BUT we also got a goat curry & that was terrific goat. So so tender & flavorful. If you've been wanting to try goat, try this one! The rice & peas were definitely above average. I don't typically eat much of it but I did this one. The cabbage is shredded very thin. It's ok, it checks the box for having greenery on the plate. Ok plantain lovers this is some of the best I've had! It was cooked perfectly, sweet, caramelized & just yummy! No plantain comes with your meal so you need to get a side order. The side order is an ample amount. I'd come back for the plantain alone! Love having this on the southwest side of town. I definitely recommend checking them out! I dined in at Hop-A-Long's Jamaican Kitchen for the first time on 11/12/2024. Whenever I'm greeted with a smile and warm welcome upon entering a restaurant, I know that the food will be good. And they didn't disappoint. I ordered the curry chicken with rice and rice, and it was cooked to perfection. The price for a large meal was much lower than I'd expected and worth more than the price. I went in to order a to go order. The owners were very nice. They were out of jerk chicken (it was only about an hour before closing), but my 2nd choice was ox tails with rice & peas, cabbage, and a side of mac & cheese. They asked if I wanted a small or large and looking at container size it definitely had to be a small. (Portions are very generous.) The flavor of everything was spot on. The gravy with the oxtails mixed perfectly in with the rice & peas too... All in my total was just under $25 and for the quality and amount of food I got, I couldn't be happier!! It's been awhile since I've had some good Jamaican food and found this gem in Rosenberg of all places. It's a small place in a shopping center. The server was very nice, I assume it was maybe an owner. The food was outstanding. We ordered large orders of oxtails and jerk chicken. They came with rices and peas(red beans) and cabbage. We also ordered ripe plantains and a beef patty. The portions are big and food came out hot. The only two things that I didn't care for was that it was warm in the place and I kept hearing the microwave going off while we were waiting for our food. Not sure what that was about. read more

TL;TR: Food is great, okay service and questionable food handling practices that could be improved upon to make this place 5 stars. My experience at Hop A Long's practically went how other lower ratings went. We arrived near their opening time (11am) and were probably their first costumers of the day. When we walked in it took a little while to be attended despite being the only ones their, as we were ordering the lady was pretty "mild mannered" not giving the most welcoming experience for us new costumers. Like another yelper had stated before the menu was very limited which was disappointing and when I asked what was available she didn't make the options too clear to me. I ended up ordering jerk chicken, curried chicken (which were like the two only options she said she had) and a red snapper (thats she said was cooked to order?). We ended up waiting ~15 min which now that i'm thinking abt it is kind of ridiculous because as another seemingly oblivious yelper mentioned years ago a use of a microwave. After hearing a microwave go off a couple of times, moments before receiving our food I seen the lady take my plastic tray out of the microwave LOL. The price ended up being $28.47 - I wasn't charged or rung up for the fish and never received it for some reason? The food was just the experience that I was hoping for as i've been curious to try jamaican cuisine. The chicken was tender and amazing and the sauce was great on both the curried chicken and the jerk chicken. The rice was done well and is delicious with the chicken and sauce on the top. Overall great and delicious and was very pleased with the food. I don't understand what the need to use a microwave was for tho. I ended up ordering more in the afternoon as well as we were headed our way back home from houston in hopes to try more. This time I ended up ordering ackee and cod fish, oxtails and a ting drink - $46.28. The ackee and cod fish was terrible in my experience. I know it's also called salt fish as well but dam* it was wayyy too much salt and was a bit too fishy, maybe even spoiled. I'm just curious if this is due to the preparation that went into making the dish or if it's just my palate. I ended up actually having to immediately spit out a bite due to a rancid a** spoonful and didnt even bother finishing it. Do not recommend. The oxtails in my opinion aren't worth the cost but they were also delicious. I only hope this review is helpful and informative and can be used as supportive feedback for the restaurant and owners to improve. I was really excited to try this Jamaican spot since I didn't have time to stop the last time I was in Rosenberg. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. When I first walked in, there was a woman helping another customer, but instead of greeting me, she just stared at me and looked me up and down. I sat down for a minute, and a man from the back came out and told me she would be with me shortly. When I walked back in after stepping outside for a moment, she still didn't acknowledge me--just kept staring. I finally spoke up and said I wanted to order, and that's when she asked what I wanted. As I was ordering, I noticed her digging in her ear, which was already concerning. Then, after handling the cash register, she went to grab plantains without washing her hands. I moved to a spot where I could see the kitchen area, and she was still touching her hair and digging in her ear while handling the food. She grabbed a knife and started cutting the plantains in her bare hands--without ever washing them after touching money, her ear, and her hair. At that point, I stood up and told her, "Never mind." She rudely asked me to repeat myself, and when I said it again, she just said, "OK then." That was enough for me. I drove 37 minutes just to be completely put off by the lack of hygiene and poor customer service. The man working there was the only positive part of the experience, as he at least acknowledged me and let me know someone would be with me. He must know how she is because her attitude was beyond unprofessional. I will never return. If basic hygiene and customer service aren't a priority here, I can't trust the food. I wanted to eat some jerked chicken because it's so good and this place was delicious. They had good music playing outside as well. I ordered the jerked chicken combo ($11) that comes with cole slaw and rice with beans/peas, as well as the chicken wings and both types of plantains - green and ripe. The jerked chicken was flavorful and the flavor oozed into the rice, which was tasty. The chicken wings were really good as well. I loved ending my meal with the fried plantains. I got both green and ripe to try them, and I don't have a favorite since they both have their place. The ripe ones were definitely sweeter and softer. Easy parking as it's located in a large strip mall area. Plenty of space for parking. read more

This is my go to spot. I'm in my Jamaican/island food era. Friendly service, do call ahead of time to see if they have what you need available because business is booming and it can take a minute to prepare. Environment is clean and plenty tables. I plan on ordering everything on the menu by the end of the year but for now I like the beef patties, brown stewed curry chicken with rice and peas can't go wrong with adding fried plantains, the goat curry is also nice, I tried the oxtails but that can be hit or miss I'm not big on bones, the Johnny cake/bread is also nice. I always call in my order and the owners have my food packed and ready upon arrival. It's in a small plaza so parking to grab your order is never a problem. The staff was very nice and polite and accommodating. There was plenty of parking. The inside was simple and clean. But... The chicken patties and beef patties were the. Best. I've ever had. Same with the oxtail. I'm going to buy an oxtail and bring it to Sugar Land to show a local chef what he's doing wrong with his. Keep up the great job! My preference is the Curry Goat with rice and peas, fried plantains, and a side order of Roti. The owners are so nice and down to earth. Have you ever had food from a really clean kitchen? This food tastes like they take freshness of their ingredients (especially poultry) and their cleanliness seriously. The spice level in mine felt like they were being cautious for the American palette. I get that. A little more heat would have been ok. But, goodness what a find. I really hope this place takes off.
