My wife and I had a very positive experience using Tripper Bus from Rosslyn/Arlington to NYC on Tuesday, Sep. 15, 2009, departing Rosslyn at 9:20 a.m. At 9:00 a.m. we joined a short line that had already formed on the sidewalk in front of McDonald's (the signage on the store now says "McCafe" but it's still a McDonald's) at 1823 N. Moore St. which is almost at the intersection of N. Moore St. and 19th St. and just a 2-minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro station. About 5 minutes later a man arrived with a sign for "Tripper Bus" which he placed on the sidewalk and he assured us that we were waiting in the right place. At 9:10 the bus arrived. The driver ("Janice") pulled out a large cooler of bottles of cold mineral water, placed it by the entrance door of the bus (a very nice "perk" that Tripper offers) and began taking our pre-paid tickets as we got on the bus. Because seating is on a "first-come, first-served" basis, the organized line that we customers had already formed on the sidewalk began to deteriorate. As the man from Tripper began loading luggage into the baggage compartment, some passengers without luggage moved around our "line" and boarded the bus ahead of some of us waiting for the man to take our suitcases. This was a little annoying but, since there were only 17 Rosslyn passengers getting on a 56-seat bus, this did not create a problem (and there doesn't seem to be a reasonable way to avoid this situation). Fortunately, there were ample seat choices for everyone as this was not a peak travel time or day.
The bus left promptly at 9:20 a.m., and Janice expertly guided it over the Key Bridge and on to Bethesda where about 10 more passengers boarded. We left Bethesda on schedule, had a 10-minute rest stop about 45 minutes before entering the Lincoln Tunnel to NYC (the rest stop is at the driver's discretion depending upon traffic, weather, etc) and arrived at the W. 34th St. and 7th Ave. destination (opposite Macy's) just 5 minutes late (2:05 p.m.).
The bus was clean, the bathroom was clean (no shortage of toilet paper) and the seats clean and comfortable. Onboard temperature was comfortable (though it's slightly warmer toward the back of the bus near the engine). Next to every pair of seats there was an electrical outlet for computers, DVD players, etc. (another nice Tripper "extra"). We did not use the onboard WiFi system so we cannot comment on that service but we didn't hear any of any complaints.
Our driver "Janice" was pleasant, courteous, very professional and a safe driver. The price of $25/person each way is a bargain (some competitors are now charging $30/person). We did not use Tripper for our return trip from NYC only because on the day we returned, Tripper did not have a bus scheduled at the hour we needed to leave.
It was a delightful ride to NYC and took no more time (4 hours 45 minutes, and a lot less money) than going by Metro from Rosslyn all the way to Union station and then by Amtrak to the same destination (NYC's Penn station). We would definitely take Tripper on future trips between Arlington and NYC. Excellent, safe service and good value. read more
