We are frequent DC/MoCo to NYC travelers. We have tried all manner of transport - bus, Amtrak, and car. Bus is generally our favorite (convenience, cost, and speed) and we had an excellent experience with Tripper bus this weekend. To and from NYC, our buses were incredibly prompt, clean, fully operational (all power outlets worked), and safely operated. The convenience was incredible and for each leg the bus was right on time. We made it to NYC in well under 4 hrs and it was just a pleasant all around ride. The seats are a bit more cramped than Amtrak, but we rode the basic bus. Compared to Amtrak (which has been delayed every time we've taken it), the bus was easier, cheaper and more convenient. read more

Our driver was reckless and extremely disrespectful. It is clear we are a burden to him the way he was slipping and sliding in the snow trying to get back to base. His attitude was dismissive and unsafe. The way this man drove, I don't even drive like that in my car. I actually had to delete this review and repost after I left the bus. That's how bizarre the whole thing was. I put in two starts because the Admin lady on the phone gave me a partial refund for the first leg of my trip since that trip was cancelled and she gave me that refund in minutes. She was curt but polite and efficient. I'm never taking Tripper or Gunther buses ever again. This is the most expensive greyhound service I've ever been on. read more

Gunther Charters and Tripper Bus are the same company. Don't be fooled by different names--it's the same operation, with the same reckless drivers and the same unprofessional customer service. They hide behind different brands, but it's the same crappy company underneath. We trusted them once and regret it. Between late buses, unsafe driving, no-shows, and the runaround when you try to get help, it's obvious this company does not care about passengers. Save yourself the stress--take the train, another bus line, or any other option. Just avoid this one. This company needs to be investigated by the DOT for reckless driving and other serious issues. They cross state lines, so complaints can be filed with the DOT. On our trip to New York, the first bus was 30-40 minutes late. The second driver then nearly caused two accidents and drove excessively over the speed limit. Both drivers were reckless and should be monitored by state troopers and fined. If anyone is ready this, and knows a few state troopers, because it's insane. Especially the way the driver went through the toll booth, he was driving at such a high rate of speed, I thought he was going to hit the toll booth. Insanely dangerous. For our return trip, the bus never even showed up. We are now forced to dispute the charges with our credit card company and are warning everyone we know to stay far away from this company. We travel to New York several times a year for business--usually by train--but decided to give this bus company a try. That was a huge mistake. I cannot believe how unprofessional they are. Something is seriously wrong with this company; it feels like they are intentionally trying to scam customers while giving nothing but the runaround. read more

Elite bus last night from NYC, holiday traffic, rain and road closures. Driver did an amazing job.

We traveled from Bethesda to NYC. Unfortunately the bus was 40 minutes late on an extremely hot day therefore we were waiting for an unacceptable amount of time in extreme heat. The gentleman from the company who was waiting with us was both apologetic and pleasant however when the bus arrived the bus driver was not! There was no apology for the delay and the way he spoke to the passengers was abrupt and condescending. He was very unapproachable and even though all of the passengers were chatting in normal speaking voices, being respectful of one another, he chose to suggest (over the loud speaker) that he needed to remind people to keep their voices down. This was totally unnecessary. Additionally, we stopped on route which lengthened the journey even further. Having used Vamoose so much in past, there is no comparison with the overall experience. read more

Even with switching off my Wi-Fi & "Forgetting the WiFi", still a no go. I was still able to utilize the strong connection & watch movies on my iPhone. I understand that front seats are closed to reduce distraction when the bus is not full, but the current system creates a lot of confusion. Today is first time on Tripper from Bethesda to NYC. Very professional, friendly, and enjoyable experience. Hands down the best bus trip ever taken!! Far far far better than Bolt or Mega...here's why: Run by Gunther Tours, someone at that company knows the importance of attention to detail when it comes to keeping customers happy and it seems that is their ultimate goal. Free WiFi, working outlets, free bottled water, the bus is clean and looks and smells almost new with modern technology. There are working seat belts and a holder for my coffee/tea. The location is on a safe side street across from Panera Bread and Starbucks...perfect location for early morning coffee drinkers. The moment you arrive, you are greeted by a very friendly man wearing a Tripper bus jacket. He checks your ticket, then once everyone boards, he comes on board to make announcements and wish you a pleasant trip. He checks to make sure the outlets are working properly, gives you the WiFi info and also lets you know that for safety reasons, they will switch drivers along the way. The bus arrived 10 mins before departure and we left on time. About 30 minutes into the ride, we pull into a rest stop to switch drivers. The other driver was already there, and dressed nicely. He gets out of a van marked Gunther Charters and Tours. The drivers exchange papers and the first driver says "y'all have a good ride" before getting off. That entire transaction took all of 4 minutes then we were promptly back on the road. The best part is that they offer free movies to watch on your device! Gunther runs a tight ship. Tripper is the way to go and I'm so so happy they operate a few blocks from my home. My trips to NYC will be a breeze! Thank you Gunther!!! read more

Tripper doesn't even deserve one star and Yelp should not remove this review like they did with my first post. The bus driver refused to wear a mask and told the passengers he could not enforce masks on a trip from NYC to Bethesda. (I have pictures as proof) Five! people were not wearing masks and one was very sick, sneezing and coughing. Their website notes that masks are required and the driver violated a federal transportation mask mandate. The company endangered the public and our health during a pandemic! They refuse to reimburse money and only offered a voucher. Please find a different mode of transportation and keep your families safe. *** Let me start off by saying Tripper Bus DOES NOT deserve 1 star. It does not even deserve zero stars. It deserves to be stripped of any stars it has. And yes, I still feel this way 24 hours after my extremely horrific experience with them, giving myself time to cool down before writing my review. *** Now for what happened... On Sunday, June 29, 2014, I boarded the 5:00 PM Tripper Bus leaving NYC heading to Bethesda, MD / Arlington, VA. About 20 miles outside of Newark, NJ, the Tripper Bus broke down on the side of the turnpike. The bus driver pulled over onto the shoulder, and exited the bus. At this time, no communication had been made to us, the passengers, in any capacity. We all sat on the bus, wondering what was going on. The bus driver continued to get on and off the bus for 30 minutes, tinkering with stuff outside the bus, then coming on the bus to attempt to start the vehicle. The only assumption we could all make was that the bus battery died, and he was trying to figure out how to start it. One frustrated passenger, a mother traveling with her daughter on the bus, got up saying she was not about to die on the side of the NJ Turnpike, and asked the bus driver what was going on he had not even said 1 word to us at that point. He informed her (and only her) that the bus had indeed broken down, and that was it. Luckily for the rest of us, this passenger then took it upon herself to share this news with everyone else. The driver did not share this information himself. Once we realized we would be stranded, we began disembarking the bus, as the air-conditioning was not working and it was very hot and humid aboard the bus. The bus driver did not tell us to sit in a specific area or even give instructions for safety. Some people sat behind the bus, on the highway, some in front of the bus. Some stood in front staring into oncoming traffic, risking life and limb. The bus driver did not attempt to even gather everyone or to tell people to walk in the path between the bus and shoulder guard rail, as some people were still walking around the bus on the outside of the vehicle in highway traffic. When the original frustrated passenger contacted Tripper Bus, she was at first told all of their buses had been chartered out and they were unsure what was going to happen. Finally, after continued calls into Tripper Bus, we were told a replacement bus would be coming and that was that. They shared no other information with us, and this information again did not come from the driver, but another fellow passenger. Finally, a replacement bus came, and it was only at this point that we were informed while we had a ride home, we would not be able to get our luggage off of the original bus to take with us. Apparently when a bus breaks down, the luggage bay locks up as it only opens when the bus is running. NOBODY was okay with this. I personally had medication in my luggage that I did not need while I was on the bus but would need later in the evening, and I called Tripper Bus informing them of this. The lady who answered the phone was snippy and rude, acting as though I was inconveniencing her by calling and she rushed me off the phone. I've never experienced anyone so rude, cold, or brash in my life. As I ended the call, my jaw was on the highway gravel, astonished at how someone could be so indifferent given the situation we as passengers were in. Several of us passengers got together and attempted anything we could to get the luggage bay open, working with the original bus driver and the new bus driver. As we were doing this, the original bus driver told us to write down our names and information as there was no way we could get our bags and they would somehow get our bags to us. We were the ones who had to remind him that traveling by bus is NOT the same as traveling via airplane. Nobody had tagged luggage and there was no legitimate way for them to get the right bags back to the right people. Lucky for us, the new driver contacted a company to come open the bay, and they eventually got our bags off the old bus and onto the new bus. It was during this ordeal that the original bus driver let us know Tripper Bus executives had decided to no longer speak with him and would only be communicating with the driver of the new bus. Today, instead of refunding our fare for the bus trip, Tripper Bus executives have decided to issue a voucher for a future purchase for them. This experience of sitting on the NJ Turnpike was more than enough for 1 lifetime and I have no interest in ever purchasing a trip from them again, and have contacted them repeatedly asking for a full refund. All these attempts at contacting Tripper Bus have been ignored, both yesterday and today. I hope anyone considering using them reads my review and heeds my warning--if you value your life, DO NOT USE TRIPPER BUS. I REPEAT, DO NOT USE TRIPPER BUS. NOT NOW. NOT EVER. read more

My bus ride today was at 2 pm (from NY) with Jerome, but I've been riding TripperBus for a few years and never had any issues. The price is reasonable, typically $27 one-way on a normal day and $37-$45 for holidays. The estimated ride time is 4.5 hours but in most cases I've been able to travel from NY to Bethesda in about 4 hours. Sometimes they give you free water which is a nice little bonus. I like TripperBus because I like that the stop is in Bethesda rather than DC, which saves the hassle of an additional metro ride, and both the bus stops in Bethesda and NY are easy to locate. read more

I feel compelled to update my review even though it's 5 stars both times there are so few places/businesses where things are just so well run and the employees are pleasant and seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs. Tripper Bus is one of them - the drivers are very...human! Courteous and friendly, willing to help. It seems like they are given flexibility in the routes they take - over Thanksgiving the driver announced he was taking a different route because the bus ahead of us got stuck in traffic leaving NYC. So we ended up avoiding sitting in traffic for hours. I read a review below about someone complaining about the guy that staffs the bus stop in Bethesda. I think he is absolutely a kind hearted person and I've never had anything but extremely polite interactions with him. read more

Tripper is one step above all the other buses. Sure, you pay a ~$5 premium for the Bethesda or Arlington drop off essentially, which is great for my family but might not be ideal for all DC-goers. They definitely have one of the better frequent-customer deals; 4 tickets lands you 1 free ticket. Also, they let you change your time online without a fee (except for 50 cents processing) or even fully cancel for a credit. Wifi is about like all the other ones that offer wifi. The free water is also a nice touch. Check low for the outlets. They're there! My last trip up from Bethesda involved potential traffic, but the bus took lots of back roads and got us there in good time. read more

Obviously, if Tripper Bus riders were willing to spend more money on travel to New York, we'd take Amtrak. It's simply a given that the train is more comfortable, faster, safer, and more likely to arrive on time than the bus -- any bus. That said, if you are going to take the bus, take Tripper. Tripper usually leaves on time, you get a bottle of water, you often get two seats to yourself, and the Wifi, while not always strong, works more often than not. Occasionally you will have a less pleasant ride, but for the most part, you'll be satisfied with your decision. Three pieces of advice: 1) If you book super-early, you can spend less than the normal $27 for your ticket. 2) If you want to hear your bus driver rap while driving, sit close to the front when Derek is behind the wheel. (I've had him twice recently on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. from NYC, so that may be his regular slot.) 3) No matter who your driver is, if he says you are stopping for 15 minutes, don't stay inside the rest stop longer than that. It's disrespectful to the other passengers and you just may get left behind. read more

I was already upset that I had to take a bus to NY. But the Tripper bus was not a bad experience as compared to my MegaBus adventure. Each seat was provided with outlets for charging your portable devices. The driver was fun and personable and attempted to converse with most passengers. He even gave us bottled water for the trip. Before departure, he gave us bus rules and provided us information on how to access the free Wi-Fi. And not that he could control it, but we arrived to NY at the projected time. Sounds good so far, right? Well on the way back, we had a different driver, no bottled water, no pleasant conversation with passengers and most importantly, NO WI-FI. I swear, the only reason this review is not rated less is because I slept the entire ride back. If I was up, I would have been so livid! read more

I've been using this bus company for over 3 years. They're always on time and have great drivers. Today was especially impressive since our driver Jerome called our arrival by the minute. I've taken the Tripper bus on 5 different round-trips over the past 7 years. The bus has always left on schedule at the appointed location. The coaches have been comfortable. Usually free water if you like. Electrical outlets by each seat. There is a very small bathroom on the bus if you need it, with hand sanitizer. Most of the time the bus does not stop on the way to NY. Occasionally, they will make a stop at a rest area...but my experience has been that is the rarer occasion. Perhaps the decision is based on whether the driver needs it ;-) I usually use my own cell phone hotspot..but they do have WIFI on the bus with movies you can watch. I tried the WIFI and it was slow. Anytime you get a bus full of passengers using one shared hotspot, it just is not going to be that fast. I don't think for this price you can expect much more from a bus service. One time (back in 2010, a bus did break down on the way back to DC from NY). they sent another bus and all told it was something like 90 minute delay. Without asking for it, they reached out to give a partial refund/credit. The ticket is cheap enough to begin with, a 10% refund isn't a big deal but they do care. I've never had issues since that time. read more

Tripper Bus gets you from point A to point B just fine. I've been taking tripper for years because they are consistent and their buses are clean. I realize that my experience isn't everybody's. I'm leaving the two star review because the man with beard that takes roll call at the Bethesda stop has had a terrible attitude for years. When you are a loyal customer the last thing you want to start off a 4 hour plus bus ride is admonishment for holding up the line when it's not your fault. My last straw was when everyone starting cutting in front of me in the line while the bus driver took his time loading my luggage into the cargo hold. I was then told to hurry the hell up and was asked "what's your problem" simply because I frowned from frustration. I didn't raise my voice, I didn't do anything wrong. I have been given this same attitude by the same man with the white beard multiple times over the years. I will be using either gobus or vamoos moving forward. read more

It took us 9 hour to get to NYC on 11/23 because part of I95 was shut down. The bathrooms are tiny and dirty. And on our way pack, the bus stopped at the Maryland House but wouldn't let use you the bathroom. I am pregnant and can't fit comfortably in the tiny bus bathroom. Also, on our journey back, there was an entire family reeking of severe body odor. It was so bad, I was dry heaving. There is no window to crack for fresh air. read more

Just coming here to say that I love the Tripper Bus. I lived out by Bethesda/Rockville traveled home to NYC frequently. The worst part of the journey is sitting on the metro for long period of time, late at night. I hated trekking to Union Station, and then i found Tripper Bus. Idk how they always make it btwn NYC and Bethesda in 4hrs flat but they do. Also generally very punctual, even when traffic is crazy. At worst, it shows up 10 mins late and we board super quickly. Have never felt unsafe w driver's driving, super smooth ride, and they hardly every overbook so the seat next to me is usually available. Outlets don't charge my phone very quickly most of the time, and wifi on bus rides is always spotty, but the buses are new-ish, comfy, not smelly, and that's all that matters. Free water at boarding. No stops, and I've never used the bathroom so can't comment on that. I will miss taking Tripper Bus when I relocate bc it's been so good to me. I only wish I'd found them sooner!! read more

Booked this bus last minute on the same day from NYC to DC due to problems with another bus but don't regret it one bit! The bus left MSG around 7 and was supposed to arrive at Bethesda at like 11-11:30 but nope we got there 10:30 great speed. The bus gave out free water and it was at night so I had a whole 2 seats to myself. The company does have partnership deals with DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia), NYC hotels and other attractions so you could score up to like a 25% discount on those maybe even more. On your six ride with tripper it is free so thats good. read more

Nice, spacious elite bus, friendly greeting from the checkin agent, friendly driver, decent (not fabulous) wifi, clean restroom, comfortable seats with tons of legroom. Spotlessly clean. I've travelled total of 4 times with this bus service 3 out of 4 was good but the fourth time was horrible. It seemed the bus driver was angry at something and even after I personally asked him to slow down, he blamed it on the car. He changed lane so many times that my friend actually had a bruise the next day. I sent email to tripper bus and no response. I tried to change my tickets over thE phone and no answer so it's all good until you need to reach out to a human being aka customer service. read more

I've been on quite a few buses from DC to NY, including Bolt and Vamoose. I have to say that my experience with Tripper was the best yet. For once, my bus to NY and back were ON TIME both ways!! That's 5 stars right there. The driver we had this past weekend going to New York was awesome. He was a great driver (sometimes this is hard to come by with buses!), entertaining and just an all-around friendly guy. Best of all? He had such a great attitude and Saturday when I took the bus up, it was his birthday! Anyone who works on their birthday and is still happy is a great man in my books. Pros: two outlets with each set of seats, so both you and your trip partner can charge devices at the same time, free water, free WiFi (although spotty in NJ area), buses usually aren't full, so you usually get a full set of seats to yourself, and without traffic, well, my trip back to Bethesda was a short 3.5 hours long yesterday! Tripper Bus is excellent. Convenient, clean and right on time. I took the bus from Bethesda to New York City in late December. Our bus driver, Kenny, was friendly, courteous, and a safe driver. And he got us to NYC 20 minutes ahead of schedule. The bus seats are roomier than airplanes, with more legroom and a charging station at each seat. You cannot beat the convenience and the price. $54 round trip. Amazing! read more

First of all, we are talking about taking a BUS to NYC, not the Metroliner. For $25 each way, I am far more amenable about things than paying $125 or more. Like lining up on a sidewalk in front of an under construction carryout in the cold. Folks were friendly, assuring those coming by that it IS the right place. The location is on the tip of Edgemoor between where the buses pull in/out and La Madeleine on Old Georgetown Rd (I think it used to be on Old GT by Jedds). A fellow checked us off a list and offered a bottle of water. We took the 10:10 am on a Monday and it was pretty full, but on time. The bus looked like a nice charter, fairly new and clean. The wireless worked all the way up, slow, but there. And I could plug in my phone rather than wasting juice would need when I got to NY. We stopped on the way up at the Woodrow Wilson rest stop on the NJ Turnpike for 15 minutes, but not on the way back. We flew up to NY with the only slowdown once we made it onto the last streets going to Madison Square Garden at 33rd street, across from Macy's. We arrived 2:10-2:15. Nice driver put out bags below and pulled them out for everyone. I was in a hurry going up and we had the same fellow going back, so I tipped him when we arrived home. While we were in NYC there was a terrible storm and ice. Apparently they canceled the Wed. am bus and notified people by email &/or phone. We lined up for the 5:30 pm bus in front of a sneaker store whereupon an Asian lady tried to poach people for "Eastern Bus". When the bus arrived, about 5:20, the driver told her to get lost and after some words between her, the driver and the Hasidic checker-inner, she departed. The Tripper guys whisked us onto the bus and checked us in on the bus (it was very cold!). The same new bus and driver. We were only 1/3 full, so stretched out over 2 seats and we zipped out of NY. Most folks either slept or computered away on the trip home and we made it to Bethesda at 9:15, possibly a new record for me. I bought 2 tickets RT for friend and me so now I have a free trip! I LOVE this bus. Unlike Megabus which tends to show up at least half an hour late, this bus arrived EARLY. As we began to board we were handed a complimentary bottle of water by a smiling employee which was definitely a nice surprise/bonus. The bus driver was also extremely friendly, informative, willing to help with directions once we arrived in NYC, and was especially caring with senior citizens. The seats were comfortable and there were working outlets for everyone...unlike Megabus which usually has 1 per 2 seats. Breakdown: We left on time. We arrived on time. Ride was comfortable. Okay, let's break this down, shall we? I had taken Bolt Bus before with no problem, but Tripper Bus leaves from Bethesda and I'm in upper Montgomery County so I thought I'd give it a try. I also had a bunch of bags for a long trip so taking Metro into D.C. on a weekend seemed like a bad idea. My friend drops me off in Bethesda and I get in line with a bunch of other riders. The air is filled with the smell of burning fuel, and JUST after my friend pulls away I see that there is oil or diesel fuel (not sure) pouring down the street from the engine in the back. Nice. I immediately had a bad feeing, as the driver poked around in the engine and argued with someone on his bluetooth. I hung around for awhile but I had a house- and pet-sitting job to report to in New York and I needed to try to stay on schedule. Also, customers and another Tripper employee were smoking cigarettes right next to the river of fuel. Fail. I asked the bus driver if I could get my bag and told him I was heading downtown. I asked him offhand (and very nicely, I might add. I took my pills that morning) if he thought I may be able to get a refund. "I CAN'T DISCUSS THAT WITH YOU," he barks at me. "I DON'T KNOW." He was aggressive for zero reason. Look, I understand his bus is likely to catch on fire at any minute, and it's hot, and I don't know what all else is going on in his life, but it seems like a reasonable question for a passenger on a broken vehicle to ask before she goes and spends more money on another mode of transportation. "You don't know. Okay. That is all you needed to say," I said. That was when he went off. (Pardon the language of my transcription here.) "What the F&$K is your problem? That is some s$!t! You don't tell me what to say! What is your problem?" Sigh. Okay, even if I was the biggest word that rhymes with witch in the world at that point, WHEN did it become okay to scream profanity at a customer? Or anyone for that matter? And then to continue to talk trash about this customer/person to other passengers when she has made her way up the sidewalk, feeling menaced because YOU, Mr. Clyde the driver sir, appear to be FOLLOWING HER, still swearing and yelling, when she turns around? I heard him say, "She's just angry about something. I don't know what the hell her problem is. Blahblahblah." There was another Tripper person working on the sidewalk, holding a clipboard. He told me his name but I won't repeat it here, but I will share that when I told him that the driver swore at me in that fashion he looked at him down the sidewalk and sighed and said, "Oh, why did you do that?" while he blew his cigarette smoke in my face. This was one ridiculous operation and I don't care if every other bus they run transports people to New York on a cloud of unicorn glitter fuel. That kind of behavior is inexcusable to me, and I can be pretty laid back when I feel like it. Just do not ever, ever, EVER say the f-word to me, in reference to me, unless we have an arrangement that allows for that kind of behavior as a big old funny joke, which we did not, CLYDE. I am still disgusted, and I would rather risk never getting my $25 back so I can tell Yelp and everyone about it. I'd call Seven On Your Side if I had the energy. I made it to an Amtrak car and to New York an hour after I was schedule to arrive. My nifty $25 trip turned into $100, including the eaten bus ticket. I'll be on Bolt or Amtrak from now on. It's worth a few extra bucks in Amtrak's case, and a few less to ride on a line that does not employ this man, to my knowledge, and seems to have much more stable vehicles. $100 RT for 2 people. Sweet. Also, next time we ride, we'll go for $75 because it's buy 4 tix, get 1 free. People are cool too -- we arrived 2 minutes before the bus left, and asked a nice guy to move (bus was 1/2 empty, last bus on Friday) so my bf and I could sit together. He did (with a smile, if he had said no, we would have sat separately, no problem as well), and off we go. Also, the driver handed out bottles of water. Also, it's right next to Bethesda Metro. Check, check, and check! This bus (unlike some other buses you may have ridden in the past) does not stop. If you really have to go pee, this is a problem (unless you have hand sanitizer and can brave the bathroom, I just crossed my legs) -- but it saves at least 30 minutes on the trip, no joke. The biggest check is that Tripper is super organized on the NY end. Bolt bus is a huge scramble on a narrow sidewalk to board 2 or 3 buses going to different places. Tripper, in contrast, loads up next to Macy's -- this means that there is an awning and shade for hot summer days, and that the sidewalk is 2x as wide. Also, there's a dragon lady in NYC to keep the peace. You line up and get on in the order in which you have lined up. No one gets out of line, OR ELSE. With Bolt, you bolt for the bus and elbow past all those group C people who are standing right next to the door because they can cheat the line. Not with the dragon lady.
