Visited this airy, bright, and unassuming space with a friend the other day for study group. I was hesitant at first for whatever reason, like it felt pompous or something with no signage -- I was pleasantly surprised. The food and drink were delicious. The menu is minimal but mighty. I felt genuinely nourished after a vanilla bean latte, parfait, biscuit (Red Lobster-esque cheddar biscuits) / egg sandwich, and greens salad. The eggs were expertly fluffed how I like them. My friend had the lentil soup along with a tofu scramble on focaccia. We ate it all! The espresso was strong, you get real silverware and clayware/bowls. Wow! I was taken aback. And for what you're getting, the prices aren't all too bad. They could definitely be higher (don't make them higher ) I encourage any coffee shop loiterer, vegan/vegetarian, or city dweller, student, etc -- to try this spot. There are a wide variety of books in the room connected to the dining area, with book shelves filled with zines and art pieces. Also a stage? What goes on in here!? Found a delicious vanilla latte; plus the dirty chai was super strong and had a unique spiced flavor. The chocolate chip cookie was excellent, soft but with crispy edges, just like I like it, and the yummy chocolate bites mmm so sweet. The eggy breakfast sandwich was perfect on a fluffy savory biscuit. It had an interesting cream cheese spread mixed in making the eggs nice and creamy and the pickle slices made for a nice surprise. I do wish we got a bit more of the side salad because I enjoy my greens! This is probably my favorite coffee shop in Detroit. They're in a great location, right next to Eastern market, so it's a solid place to go to over the weekend while strolling the market. They're also a great place to work from, as there's plenty of space and it's not too loud. I love the dirty chai, but I think the main standout is the food. They have a great selection of pastries and sandwiches that I think are far superior to what you find in most coffee shops. They're also connected to a plant and vinyl shop, and I haven't been, but it looks like they do local music shows as well. They also have really interesting and fun dishware. The vibes are more industrial and it's a huge space, so I really like the setup. The staff is super friendly. The only callout I would make is to be sure to look up the hours before going because they are closed or hosting events sometimes. read more

Named one of the country's best new restaurants by Bon Appétit in 2019, Trinosophes is located across from Eastern Market and has ample parking for customers across the back entrance of the restaurant. From the food to the décor, Trinosophes proves that less is more. The dining area is simply decorated with plants and minimalist furniture, giving a bright and spacious feeling. Sometimes the most delectable meals are the simplest with high-quality ingredients. For brunch, I ordered a glass of 100% Traverse City cherry juice and a vegetarian breakfast sandwich with a fried egg, white cheddar, garlic aioli, and pickle. For non-Michiganders, Traverse City produces the best cherries in the state and is known for its cherry festival every summer. My breakfast sandwich tasted freshly made from homemade ingredients. The buttermilk biscuit was to die for - very fluffy, buttery, and soft - not hard and crumbly like the biscuits that are typically found at other cafés and restaurants. I don't think I can go back to eating other breakfast biscuits again. Pickles aren't typically found in breakfast sandwiches, but it went surprisingly well with the garlic aioli and the runny egg yolk. My sandwich was the definition of gourmet breakfast food. I'm not into pastries, but what was left looked tasty. I recommend visiting as early in the morning as possible for pastries because they run out quickly. Almost everything was gone when I arrived in the afternoon. I will be returning for the biscuits and to try other menu items. Definitely one of the best new restaurants in Detroit and a must-visit for its drinks, food, and pastries. read more

My wife and I were at at the eastern market around 11 AM. All the usual eating spots in the market had lines outside. She has to go to restroom. We hopped in the car left the market. I saw the sign and open door on this place. Made a right off of Gratiot on to a brick alley. Follow it around back. I found a parking lot and an open back door. Wife answered the call. I ordered food and coffee. She had a pour over decaf and I had a regular coffee. She has the breakfast sandwich and I had the breakfast taco. Everything was 5 star. Stumbled on this gem on google and I was not disappointed! They have this vegan pizza that's delicious. The coffee is just ok. There is a record shop next door and they keep the attached door open as they play records from the shop themselves. Great workspace for students or WFH individuals. Trinosophes is great coffee shop/eatery/community and performance space in Eastern Market. It's large and airy and makes working solo, dining with friends, or working on group projects a breeze. It's perfect for every scenario, really. There are several large and communal tables for big groups and smaller table tops for solo diners. The menu is great and features several breakfast options with items ranging from breakfast sandwiches (vegan friendly) and crepes, to lunch served until 2pm featuring items like several salads, a lamb patty melt, tempeh reuben, and more. On my last visit, I had the Great Lakes Plate which consisted of a smoked fish salad, soft-boiled farm egg, pickle of the moment, and Avalon toast (gluten-free nut bread also available upon request). It was delicious. The salad was not mayo based so it was light and fresh and the egg was cooked to a perfect soft-boil. From 2-5 they have a very limited segment of the menu available as well as several baked goods and such available throughout the day for light snacks as well. Yesterday I had a lemon bar and it was so so good! I also had an iced coffee and high fives to them for having simple syrup and Calder dairy cream to mix in. In general, their coffee is prepared in a pour over style so it takes a little longer to get. That means I wouldn't recommend popping in here if you're in a hurry. But this is not the place for that in general. This is a place for socializing, relaxing, and enjoying the day. Creativity and the arts are a focus here and they also host regular special events like art shows, live music, etc. Check their board in the cafe or their website for a list of upcoming fêtes. I've been a patron of Trinosophes through their many stages. It's always been a nice place to get something to eat and sit for a while. The coffee is good and the food/bakery items are always amazing. Having the record store attached it also a very convenient plus and it's nice to stroll in their after you're done. My favorite thing they offer is their hot tea served in elongated bags. The ginger is the best. The venue space is nice and would recommend catching some carefully curated entertainment when you get the chance. I wish they had events more often but maybe in the future. read more

Oh my. I'm giving them 5 stars for the breakfast sandwich alone. Maybe it was partially me being ravenous after knocking out another 24-hour shift at the hospital, but I wish I could transport myself back in time to when I took my first bite of the breakfast sandwich. Their biscuits are AMAZING and are the perfect foundation for a buttery, savory, delicious sandwich with a hint of garlic on the tip of your tongue via their aioli. I do wish I had been around to try their full-on food menu. It appears as though they have moved away from that at this time - their menu centers around the breakfast sandwich, some simpler fare and some fresh baked savory goods that I resolve to try soon! I've posted a current menu as it looks like a few of them were out of date. The space itself is very open - cozy seating and tables abound and make it an ideal place for a meeting, brainstorm session or even just a quiet cafe atmosphere to relax. There are a multitude of book cases with books that one can pluck and read while present, and tucked in their far corner was a stage complete with numerous instruments. Currently, they also house Warda Pâtisserie, a burgeoning Algerian influenced pastry shop that is both seasonal and incredibly creative, drawing on its influences from the owner's travels. Staples that I bought were the sablé cookies as well as a lemon mascarpone tart, all of which were delicious. They're incredibly elegant and beautiful and would make for a unique gift too! Maybe we looked like we'd been before...but we didn't know a few things: 1) you went up to the counter to pour your own water 2) coffee took a half hour to make 3) you just go up to the counter when ready to pay to get your bill I had to get up 3 times to ask questions. The vanilla lavender cake was out of this world - not too sweet, with a beautiful lemony icing. My friend who had previously worked here + helped build the record store next door showed me this place and talked super highly of it! The food options seem to vary by the day. The vegan options the day I went were something along the lines of expensive avocado toast and granola yogurt, neither of which I order out anyway because I can make it at home. Butttt, there was this "peanut cigar" in the display, the one vegan pastry option. I'm a sucker for vegan pastries. It was very unique- crunchy outside and peanut filled inside. It reminded me and my friend of like a peanutty baklava in a stick. Very interesting! Technically the food options (on my experience on this one day) only would be like 3 stars, but the atmosphere makes it 4, and the personal connection/bias, the duality of the space- cafe, reading space, working space, venue space with a stage, and lastly the photos of all the tasty vegan options I have YET to try- the soba noodle bowl, the breakfast sandwich, makes it a 5. To make it GF, they substituted the GF nut bread with a berry spread, as a side dish, instead of the house made focaccia. Delicious, would definitely recommend it. My sister had the "Noodle Bowl". The dish is made GF, no substitutions needed. She said it was very tasty & exactly what she had a taste for. She added hot sauce at the table. She also had the turmeric tea & it is her all time favorite tea. She went there specially to have this tea. I had a pour over decaf coffee with half & half. Very good. This cafe should not be so well-hidden in the streets of Detroit! Inside it has the cutest vibe, the nicest people, and such a great menu! I came here for brunch during the weekend. I could not choose because so many of the options sounded delicious! The waitress recommended the buckwheat noodle bowl and in glad she did! It included carrots, shiitake mushrooms, herbs, buckwheat noodles (of course), sesame seeds, Tofu, and mixed greens. Mixed into this bowl was a divine miso glaze. This glaze was sweet and savory. It hit the spot! To go with my brunch, I ordered their fresh squeezed watermelon and lime juice and it was uber refreshing. I drank it before my meal even came so I also ordered the freshly squeezed orange juice. This was just as good! Nothing better than freshly squeezed juice to go with brunch. The perfect end to a perfect meal can include a lot of things. But in this case it was a vanilla-mango-chia pudding. It was so creamy so full of flavor I wanted to buy the rest of what they had left and take them home to eat later! But I know I can always come back here for more, which I definitely intend to do. I met up with a friend in the Eastern Market, at which time we both decided we were hungry. She insisted we check out her favorite brunch spot TRINOSOPHES. Of course I obliged and we were on our way. The location was great being off of a big street like Gratiot. The scene is very hipster with questionable choices in background music. The set was very bare of decor but that didn't bother me because I was there to eat! Anyways, my friend and I decided to split the French Toast (proclaimed best my friend ever tasted) and the fingerlings w/ corned beef. The toast WAS NOT the best I've ever tasted...not really even in the top 5 but it was good. Onto the fingerlings which were less than lukewarm, and came with the sight of H A I R on a forkful 2 seconds from being lodged in my mouth! This highly disappointed me. They comped the fingerlings, but nobody came to apologize from the back. I think a chef or manager should always apologize in such instances, but that's not everyone's practice obviously. My personal favorite cafe in all of Detroit. The space is massive, however made more homey by its welcoming staff and pleasant design. It is attached to the adjacent record shop with a shared walkway. I imagine this is their source for the lovely background music choices, which is typically a soft jazz or staff choice. They serve pour over coffee, a perfect cardamom chai, and just recently added, a varied and tasteful pastry assortment. Overall: 5/5 the perfect spot to relax in the Eastern Market neighborhood. I have to admit, I love Trinosophes. Whenever I'm downtown during the day and everything is either booked up or parking is unreasonable, we end up here. I have some complaints, sure. Every time we're here we essentially get completely ignored. Like you don't have to fawn over us- I get it, it's not that kind of place and that's not what I'm about. But a simple "can I get you guys a menu?" would be nice, instead of pretending we're not visible. It IS a café after all! Still, everything we order at Trinosophes is always on point. I like that the menu changes based on which ingredients are in season. The dishes, both sweet and savory, always taste amazing and fresh and the portions are pretty big. You leave feeling mad full but never hating yourself for it. Will keep coming back despite the almost nonexistent service. Plus, one time I had the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had in my entire life (and it was vegan!) here and I keep hoping it will make a reappearance. read more
