Tartufo is what I was told to get here. Order at the counter to go and eat it in the plaza. Order with the cashier and then take your receipt to the guy behind the gelato counter. The menu for sit down service said the tartufo is 10 Euros, but at the counter to go it was only 5 Euros. This is extremely rich, chocolate ice cream with whipped cream and 2 little cookies on top. The il tartufo is a dark chocolate ice cream ball with small chunks of dark chocolate surrounding it (and optional whip cream, and thin cookie on top.) It's very chocolatey. I liked the inside ice cream part the best, and not so much the outside, it really best for people who like extremely chocolatey things. The mora (blackberry) and strawberry gelato were okay, it had the right fruit flavors. Not terrible and not outstanding, just decent. I would search elsewhere for gelato. read more

Tre Scalini has two parts. A Ristorante Tre Scalini part and the ice cream/gelato take-out portion. The people who are sitting down are actually in the ristorante part. I ran inside to the take-out stall area behind the waiter guy to get my nommy ice creams. So this review is only for their ice cream. Tartufo. Chocolate Gelato Ice Cream with Maraschino Cherries Rolled into a Ball, Covered in Chocolate and Topped with Whipped Cream and Waffle Cracker. This was amazing and I'm usually not even a fan of chocolate. For me, there is such a thing as "too much chocolate" but this was nowhere close to too much. The chocolate gelato was nommy, rich and creamy and not overly sweet. It had just the right amount of chocolatey-ness. The cherries were pretty good because they worked well with the chocolatey flavor. The waffle cracker was alright, it was more of a crispier, drier, less sweet type of cracker than the sugary waffle cracker in the States that resembles a waffle ice cone. NOMS! read more

Came here to try the tartufo (truffle ice cream ball). The tartufo is admittedly very good, however at 10 euro it is horribly over priced. Also the service and attitude we experienced from our server was poor. We asked for change when paying our bill and our server flat out told us they did not have change! My friend began arguing with him in Italian and he finally came back with our change. Due to the location on Piazza Navona this is a prime spot for gouging tourists and based on our experience they definitely try to take advantage of you. I heard that you can order the tartufo to go for half price so I would definitely recommend this option and just find a nice spot to enjoy out on Piazza Navona. read more

Finally getting to review some of the restaurants my wife and friends eat at during our European trip in May. We decided to try the food at the site touristy place we ended up in Piazza Navona. So many choices to eat we walk around the square and decided to eat here. The food was not bad for the place because we were hungry (we had better elsewhere). The spaghetti alla carbonara was ok compared to others we had. I loved the outdoor sitting and nice ambiance but was turned off by the service. The service was lacking, I think it is a European thing. Overall, we loved the atmosphere and amazing wine. The price was a bit steep and gratuities is included. read more

This place is pretty touristy, but offers a great view of the square. I throughly enjoyed the rigatoni with truffle. It was so yummy I couldn't stop eating even though I was full. The way the sauce was picked up by the rigatoni, mmmmmm. I wish I skipped on the soft crusted chicken parmigiana and the unevenly topped pizza. After dinner, feel free to walk it off judging the fake Chanel and Prada bags in the square. Check out the great street art and cute shops in the area - some better priced than others. read more

Total scam! DO NOT PAY TO RESERVE A TABLE! These people are so abusive. After calling and emailing the restaurant, a person named Ambra emailed me and said they had availability but I needed to make the reservation on their website. I clicked on the link on the email and on the one to reserve a table online. Their required a 10 euro deposit per person for the booking (€40 total for a family of four). When we arrived at the restaurant right on time, they said my name when I told them I had a reservation and promptly sat us. Only later do a woman who had a copy of my email and a man come over to our table to tell me that it was actually next door that I had paid to reserve a table, at a restaurant that used have the same owner but now only has the same name. Conveniently, they pocketed my €40, did not discount it from the bill, and completely ruined our last night in Rome. Hugely disappointed. Also the food was mediocre at best. read more

for this to be a "touristy" place, im assuming, it was decent. We wanted a quick late lunch bite between a huge breakfast, early lunch, gelato, and dinner reservations.. we were in piazza navona and this place seemed busier (read: popular) than most, we were also aggressively pursued by one of the recruiting waiters.."Come sit here, its so delicious.. here's your table" but we asked for still/tap water after being in Rome & hit over the head with service charges, bread charges, & water charges, etc.. We were brought a bottle of water (read: charge) so we reiterated that tap water was our preference and the enthusiasm for our service ended there. When we finally got our tap water (much needed after s day of touring & waiting in the Vatican lines in the sun for hours) it came in a carafe so small that we could barely fill up both glasses, we had to emphatically flag down a server for a refill each time we wanted a few more sips. Further, since we were stopping for a quick bite, we shared a starter, the fried artichoke which was actually really good, and we each got main pasta. Still dont think that was a large enough tab to warrant much attention. We werent offered any bread, and the pastas came out warm as though they'd been sitting before bring brought to the table, it should be noted that at this time of day, although they were slightly busier than the other restaurants, they were by no means packed or overwhelmed. For what it's worth, my fiancés pasta was a much better win than mine, he had the seafood linguine, which though it came with an abundance of seafood seemed to be lacking some oomph. My dish, the clam spaghetti, which i had had a taste for & was so excited to get was just lackluster. Tiny, rubbery clams, full of sand & what felt like small chards of rock or broken shell, and barely any white sauce. The place was recommended by my resident host and so I was looking forward to some local expertise. Nice location over looking the busy market and square, good out-door heating in the cool spring weather and friendly staff (My waiter was especially lovely and friendly) but that's where it ends with the positives. The dessert was not to my liking (too much cream, and the cake itself, once located under the cream, was too heavy). This is a personal taste -give me the sweet, dried mango in the market across the square any day. However I wasn't expecting the eye watering €12 charge for it, nor the €6 price of the so-so small-sized cappuccino. When I went upstairs to the bathroom there was a lady waiting, expecting a tip for handing me a towel I did not take. I do not recommend this place when in Rome. read more

We ordered within 10 minutes and it took them 1.5 hours to bring the first coarse. 3 hours for everyone to get there entry. Food was not good, service was pathetic. Don't go there. I read about Tre Scalini on Trip Advisor but I always cross reference with Yelp before making a final decision. So glad I did. After a loooong day of sightseeing (Ancient Rome Walking Tour, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain & The Pantheon) my husband and I stopped at Tre Scalini for their infamous tartufo before heading back to our apartment in Trastevere. We were seated promptly. It took awhile for a waiter to finally take our order for the Tartufo and expresso but it was fine. We sat out on Piazza Navona and people watched. The tartufo was wonderful! I had dinner here last night and it was probably the most disappointing experience I've had since my stay in Rome. The food was ok nothing special or memorable. Initially our server was attentive then after taking our order he was NO where to be found. Turns out i confused the busser who looked exactly like my server and was informed that he had left for the night. Da fuq? R you serious!? I was completely dumb founded. He Didn't even come to check on the table to see everything was ok. Mind you, it took forever to get the food. Omg.. They didn't even serve bread. As a native Italian speaker I made sure I spoke Italian. Italians tend to treat and cater to you better if you speak the language. They give you the family treatment but instead I got the tourist treatment.. Anyways I ordered the burrata, spaghetti con vongole, branzino and ciccoria. The burrata and prosciutto was really good, then again its dish which is hard to screw up. It's like screwing up French fries. The cicoria was my 2nd favorite. The vongole was meh- had better. the branzino which the server forced me to order with potatoes was swimming and caked in oil. I started laughing when I got the branzino. It was covered with potatoes I even asked the busser (server) where the fish was (please see my photos) and whoever carved the fish must have thrown half of it away because it was barely a full filet. The whole dinning experience took about 2 hours. Not to mention I couldn't even enjoy the piazza and people watch because the sweaty owner was running around trying to hustle people to eat and when he was ignored he started cursing and yelling.. This review is for their famous rich chocolate ice cream dessert, Tre Scalini Tartufo. I had to stop by as I walked through Piazza Navona after dinner after reading about it in the guidebook. Like the rest of the restaurants on Piazza Navona, the place itself is probably over-priced with mediocre food. However this chocolate dessert is to die for. Although it's slightly on the pricey side for 7 euros, it's definitely worth stopping by if you've got the chocolate craving. read more
