Sat at a bar alcove which was cool. Ordered the cheese plate and a burger. Asked for one to come out first at you usually do with an appetizer. Both came out at the same time. Burger was decent but the fries were room temp and mushy. The cheese plate looked very thrown together and quite a mess. There was a small amount of cheese (top left in the picture). This place kind of missed the mark for us. We usually go to Highwire, the bar attached next door, and have a good experience. However the bartender we got on a Saturday afternoon was just super awkward. We ordered a cheese plate which we've done on several occasions while sitting on the other side but for some reason the baguette come toasted this time. And boy was it toasted. Had a great meal there last night with a group of 12. They sat us at a big square table rather than a long rectangle. Very cool. I had catfish and chips and an Original Sin Cider. Everything was really, really good. The cider was new to me, and was surprisingly fruity. I'd recommend it to cider fans. The catfish was maybe the best I've ever had. It was cooked and seasoned so perfectly! It didn't need a sauce or anything. I ate it with the arugula it was served on. Ordered the mint waffles for Sunday brunch! The honey whip on the waffles were to die for! The mint is super strong so I'd probably ask them to leave it out if you don't like a strong herb flavor. Service was also up to par; she consistently refilled our drinks & made sure we had everything we needed even though we were all the way in the corner of the restaurant! 10/10 would return. Ate here for the third time today. We love this place! The best thing about Trappeze is the nice ambience and cool atmosphere, not to mention how good their food is. The person I came with claims it's the best food he's ever had in Athens. Our server (Bren B) recommended that I try the pulled pork slider with chili glaze, and although I've never had pulled pork and don't usually like cabbage, it was to die for. Couldn't even taste the cabbage. The burger slider I got was good even though I usually don't like pimento cheese!! The trout with grits was delicious too. I recommend trying the raspberry ketchup if you get fries. It's honestly not as expensive as it seems, and runs about $35 for two people assuming you don't drink. It remains just so-so going on 5 years now. Was at one time an excellent gastro pub. They have a good selection of beer on tap, good atmosphere and staff. Food just doesn't cut it. Pastrami Reuben was dark brown. I didn't even know it was possible to make pastrami brown. It looked like well done roast beef. My husband and I had a little kid-free time and snuck away for a lunch date in downtown Athens. We found this on Yelp, and after looking through the reviews and pictures, we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is cute, kinda small, but it's downtown Athens! So that's to be expected. Friendly staff. No wait, which was nice. But it was still pretty busy nonetheless. The server, Queen, suggested their boiled peanuts for an appetizer, so we tried a bowl. They were pretty good, not salty enough for my liking but overall I would rate a 7/10. I got the Turkey & Swiss that came on toasted bread with fries and our choice of "fry sauce". The sauce choices were: raspberry ketchup, blue cheese dip, and garlic aioli. As for the sandwich, VERY GOOD. Perfectly toasted, just the right amount of turkey, bacon, avocado, red onion and sauce - highly recommend- I will give a 9/10! Only disappointment is that I had plans after and couldn't take it home for leftovers! Now about these fry sauces.. the raspberry ketchup was intriguing but sadly a letdown! It didn't have any ketchup flavor (I LOVE KETCHUP!) so for this sauce, although the raspberry jam was good, it just wasn't warranted a "ketchup" status - so I give a 2/10. The blue cheese dip was thick and rich, very good. 8/10. Didn't get a chance to try the garlic aioli but I will next time! The hubs got the "Chicken, Bacon, Ranch" which was grilled chicken, not fried, and surprisingly he didn't set it down not once! He ate it all before even touching his fries. He said he would definitely recommend it - he gives it 8/10. Then, for dessert, we tried their "strawberry float cake" which was interesting... it was refrigerated, very pretty, dense but moist - but just wasn't sure about the flavor myself. My husband ate most of it, I was too full to indulge. So for his rating he gives it a 6/10 - it's ok but wouldn't necessarily hype it our recommend it. For all of that, with 2 sweet teas - our tab was $46 and some change before our tip. Our overall impression would merit a 8/10. Will go again and try other things! read more

Athens may be a college town, but Trappeze is more than just any ol' college pub. I can see why Trappeze is so popular - the draught beer list is diverse and unique, the food menu is enticing, and the setting creates the right mood. In my estimation, the Belgian fries were the star of the show. Fries, piled on with just about everything everywhere, are so often taken for granted as a basic uninspired side. Not so here. What exactly is a Belgian fry anyway? Well, here are a few qualifiers: They are freshly cut (skin on) and irregularly shaped. They are fried not once, but twice - making them fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. They're relatively thick - though not as thick as steak fries. These golden delights were lightly flecked with flaky salt and very tasty on their own, but Trappeze did not stop there - dip those suckers in raspberry ketchup, roasted garlic aioli, or bleu cheese sauce (my favorite). Now we're talking. One may want to take a look at the Rosemary & Garlic Fries touted as being the best fries in Athens. Now you've seen it folks, a whole paragraph devoted to fries. Ordering the Trappeze Dubbel offers diners the opportunity to try 2 out 3 available small plate options (an Asian Pork Taco, Slider Burger, or Pulled Pork Slider). My wife did just that. I ordered the Pub Burger. Truly, how I feel about a pub is weighed on the strength of their burger (if they offer one). Trappeze's Pub Burger was topped with house made pickles, caramelized onions, provolone, arugula, and mayo on a cornmeal coated bun. The burger was cooked to order just right and tasted fresh. I enjoyed the house made pickles and caramelized onions. I didn't quite care for the arugula though - the taste was bitter and the stems were annoying. I would have preferred a leafier green like romaine. Overall, a decent burger. Oh, I also ordered a cup of their Beer and Cheddar Soup. While it tasted alright, I'm not sure it came together very well. Rather than the cheese melting in to a creamy consistency, the cheddar formed tiny little globules creating an almost gritty texture. Nothing special. Anyways, the Trappeze is certainly worth a visit. Grab a seat, quaff down a few local or exotic brews, nosh on some Belgian fries, and most importantly - enjoy the company of others. If you're a fan of Five Guys Burger and Fries---this is a step up from it. I subbed the regular fries for sweet potato fries. Keep in mind if you ARE getting the fries don't expect, crispy, thin cut fries. Instead, they are medium cut and NOT crispy....I wouldn't say soggy but definitely NOT crispy. Take what you will of that. Overall I kinda liked the second time around. There were a few beers I didn't know I'd like or not so I got to "sample" them in shot glasses before I ordered them. Pretty decent overall. I still won't give them 5 stars because I feel like the food still isn't up to par (*especially the fries) but whatever! I'm a fan! We usually stop here if we are driving near Athens. The pub is off the main street and can get busy. There is parking along the road, although there seems to be construction going on right now--be aware that the city does monitor the meters. We've had some of their sandwiches, which are good. I've had the trout, which was very well done. They have a good selection of beer, although I'd like more of the Athens, GA varieties. GA seems to have interesting brewery laws where you can't just go and get a beer, so having more GA beer would be great. also enjoy the boiled peanuts, which are a little sweet and different than the boiled peanuts you can get on the road. The tables were very spaced out--more than six feet apart--and all the staff were wearing masks. read more

For bragging all over their menu about their "award winning" fries. They were the worst fries I have ever had!!! Came out with the burger limp and full of oil and almost black in color. Very greasy. We ordered 4 meals. 3 of the 4 the fries were not edible. Had to ask for fresh fries which the original ones should have never made it out of the kitchen. The service at lunch was great, although they messed up my order and I had to wait an extra 10 minutes. They gave me a 50% discount on my order, so I made it up to the server on his tip. I love the choice of food and drinks here. If you're interested in grabbing a beer or a cocktail (from highwire which is the same ownership). Lunch specials are always reasonable. I as able to get a falafel and few with a beer and it wasn't too overpriced. I have also had the veggie Rueben, which is pretty good (but I would suggest going to the grit for one instead). Was super excited to come back to Athens after graduating to eat my favorite meal on the planet: the turkey and Swiss sandwich. Was very upset to find they got rid of it completely from their menu. Don't waste your time: the new menu has about 20 appetizer options and 5 entrees to select from. Such a shame to see my favorite restaurant to make such a terrible decision to remove cult favorite items from the menu. On top of the menu disappointment, my boyfriend made a reservation and we were seated at the worst table in the restaurant: in the walkway of the door.
