It's been more than 20 years since I was a law student at UGA, and I've considered 5 & 10 to be the high water mark for Athens dining this entire time. Nestled in a gorgeous building that was once a residential house, the restaurant has a gorgeous and cozy ambience that makes you feel like you're visiting with friends from the moment you enter. The menu changes with the seasons, and I've never been less than impressed with the often-inventive dishes. I highly recommend starting with their cast iron cornbread. It sounds simple, but it's truly elevated. Right now, the sweet potato brown butter pierogies are absolutely mouth-watering, and the hazelnut bread pudding is rich and a perfect blend of sweetness and cream. The waitstaff is top notch and you'll receive better, more attentive service here than at restaurants with much larger price tags in Atlanta. They also have an impressive cocktail program and wine list. On the "it's the little things" list, the candles 5 & 10 uses in the restroom are outstanding! I'm very sad, came here to try the margarita(diggin on you), it was the most expensive item on the drink menu, so I thought it would be worth the price of 15 dollars for one drink!! It was one single sip, halfway up the glass. the ice cube was the whole entire cup. At first, I thought I was sad I wasn't sitting inside because the inside is so gorgeous. But the ambience on the porch was absolutely perfect. I did go inside and check out all the rooms. Our servers were great and all the food was delicious. The pimento cheese is so good! Do not miss it! The Cornbread and butter was fabulous! FIVE AND TEN | was unfortunately not a five star meal for me. I had such high expectations since I am a huge fan of Hugh Acheson. Apparently not too long after our visit, he was no longer associated with the location, which unfortunately makes a lot of sense. We had a pup but we called ahead to make sure it was ok to sit on the outdoor patio with her in tow. The menu looked interesting so my expectations were even higher at this point. We started with some cocktails - the peppermint tea mojito was tasty, and the Chatham artillery punch was interesting as well - the inclusion of tea in the cocktails were fun and fragrant. The food was a little more disappointing. The chilled corn soup was probably the worst bite of the night - I was hoping for more of... I'm not even sure what. I thought it would be refreshing in the summer humidity but it just lacked any real flavor. The Mushroom Risotto was ok - very simple. The Shishitos were slightly better, but even with all the seasoning you see in the photo, it still was a bit bland. Then we moved on to entrees - the Pan Seared Flounder was cooked perfectly. I really wanted to like the creamed corn but it was just ok. The Cornmeal Fried Catfish with Massaman Curry was cooked well and we loved the curry that it came with. This dish was our favorite and the highlight of the meal. Dessert was also ok compared to the rest of the meal. The chocolate hazelnut tart was a little dry but the flavor was good. Overall, I'm just super disappointed because I have seen so many hyped up reviews in the past and I wonder if I just waited too long to visit. Hope it has improved since my visit in 2022, but I'm a bit nervous to stop through again since my meh visit. read more

an absolutely incredible meal from start to finish. the drinks, food, service, and ambiance were all absolutely incredible. firstly, i LOVE the house this restaurant is in - it's so gorgeous and so well set up. we were at a table by a window and it felt so homey and cozy. the service was excellent and our servers were really lovely. to start, we ordered the cornbread with honey butter and fennel. the cornbread was nicely salted and combined with the honey butter, was unreal. we also had strawberry spritzes, which were really fresh and light. the cocktail was nice and large! my friend ordered the chicken, which she said was delicious, and i ordered the only vegetarian option, the fritters. although there was only one vegetarian large plate, i really appreciated how creative and unique it was. too many times, the sole vegetarian option is just a large grilled portobello mushroom or cauliflower, but the fritters were filled with seasonal and local ingredients, delightfully crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and dressed with a delicious mix of pickled vegetables and garlic oil on butter bean puree. the desserts were also stunning. the chocolate nemesis - flourless chocolate torte with mint chocolate chip ice cream - was a dream and paired super well with the espresso martini i had. the portion sizes were pleasantly large and i was so full after our splurge-y meal. a truly 5-star experience. read more

I loved, loved, loved this restaurant! I dined here on a Saturday night, but their use of Resy made booking a table so easy! It was relatively quiet for a weekend, which my guest and I did not mind. We were warmly welcomed by courteous staff, candlelight, and the comforting feeling of walking into your grandma's house. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Our cocktails were excellent, some of the best we had during our visit to Athens, and the menu was unique but edged with the desirable, homey palate of southern cooking. The cornbread was IMPECCABLE; not crumbly, but butter-dense and warm, topped with flaky sea salt! We also ordered the veggie plate, which was good but slightly pricey for the portion. I love that it was curated with various textures while maintaining an earthy, hearty flavor. My favorite part of the dish was the sweet potato puree with crunchy pecans! We had a reservation for graduation weekend and needed to increase the reservation from 5 people to 7. The woman on the phone said she could only accommodate us if the weather was nice and she could place us on the patio. Completely reasonable. However when I asked if I should keep or cancel the reservation, because I didn't want to be charged for a no show or last minute cancellation if they could not seat us, she refused to provide me with an answer. She could not tell me that if we kept the reservation and they could not accommodate us whether we would be charged. I told her I found it unacceptable but she refused to give me an answer. Delicious dinner with my colleague. The menu was written to entice you to try everything. We each had one dish from each section - snacks, smaller and larger. I tried the cast iron cornbread, watermelon salad and seared cobia with a cherry ginger house made soda. My colleague had the pimento cheese, peaches and burrata and the steak au poivre. She had the pineapple house made soda. We loved all of it except for the soda. We just thought the soda could have been a little bit stronger on the flavor. Everything stayed at the bottom, maybe we should have mixed it up or they should've mixed it up better. It wasn't horrible. I just wasn't as flavorful as we thought it would be. The cornbread was absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of crisp on the outside, and the whipped butter was fantastic. I really enjoyed the Cobia, which is kind of a denser white fish. The vegetables were absolutely delicious. Besides the food, let me just say this restaurant is in a gorgeous house. Each room is beautifully decorated and really has a nice southern feel. This restaurant reminds you of an old Southern home, with charming decor and outdoor seating right on the large front porch. We had a lovely dinner, with delicious and fresh food options. It's clear the menu changes frequently, tending to who is in the kitchen and what is fresh and seasonal. We started with the Serrano ham, which came with a delicious and sweet honey sauce we dipped out table bread into. We tried the majority of the larger entree portions, and table favorites included the unique stir-fried farro and the perfectly cooked lamb sirloin. We had to end the night with some dessert. We've been on the road all day, coming from Jacksonville, Florida. I decided to book a reservation for us here. I'm so glad I did! The college town of Athens, Ga has always reminded me of my own hometown. (WAR EAGLE). The restaurant was close to Campus nestled between the Old majestic Oaks. In a renovated old Southern home, the charm pulls you in. The staff here greeted us by name and we were off to our white cloth table. The ambiance lighting was relaxing as we looked over our menu. We started with the pimento cheese and baguette crisps. With bacon marmalade on top, the cheese and salty sweetness was a match made in heaven. I ordered the spinach salad. It was lightly seasoned with pecans, blue cheese and more blue cheese, lol. Entree was tender lamb slices with savory mushroom mint persillade. Paired with comforting creamed potatoes, topped with sautéed crunchy bok choy. Fine dining isn't complete without the decadent creme brûlée. Oh my goodness! This was one of the best I've tasted in all my years. The sugar topping was thick and the creme was perfect. To top off our experience Chef Hugh Acheson himself came by! I can check another restaurant off my bucket list. @fiveandten in Athens, GA. Started things off with pimento cheese and bacon marmalade spread. Sweet, smokey, and a little spicy. Next we shared a butternut squash agnolotti with sage, pecans, and brown butter. A fantastic earthy starter. Highly recommend. For entrees, My wife got the the Border Springs lamb loin with mushroom-mint persillade, whipped potatoes, and lamb jus. A gorgeous piece of meat. I got the 10 oz duroc pork chop with celeriac, stewed peppers, and tarragon oil. Delicious! A lesser man would've picked up the bone and gnawed all the meat, but I restrained myself. We finished things off with a creme brûlée with the most magnificent, glass-shattering layer of caramelized sugar. So satisfying to break through. We also happened to be dining at the same time @hughacheson was there and he was nice enough to stop by our table and have a little chat with us and sign our menu. Sad to change my past 5 star rating ! Usually known for their good food -but this time was a loser. Avoid the ramen-nothing like the quality and ingredients usually expected in good ramen or a good cook. This time Food: 2/5 Service: 5/5 for contactless curb service Broth was brown and murky, very salty and had no identifiable flavors. Best guess was flavor like canned broth mixed with instant onion soup? Ordered large bowl but there were minimal ingredients to add in: 4 tiny slivers of carrot, 2 slim transparent slices of radish, 1/2 egg, 1 tablespoon mushrooms, green onions not found. Very little resemblance to photo in their ad. So disappointing! We had visitor from the west coast and thought we would show that Athens has world-class cuisine, and ramen as good as we have had in California and Seattle. My mistake ! Restaurants have had a hard time with covid, and we want to continue to support them. So -I am hoping next time the food is better and I can go back to my 5-star opinion. . read more

What a beautiful restaurant! We took some dinner entree recommendations from our server, Kendal - we were quite pleased. The fried catfish was lightly breaded, tender and flavorful, some of the best fish I've ever had. The pasta primavera was quite good as well. The service from Kendal was top notch, just the right combination of efficient and friendly / casual. Pricing was fair, averaging about $50 per person with a shared appetizer, two entrees, and drinks. We happened to be on vacation during this trip, but this is certainly a place we'd return to in the future. While we chose to sit inside on this visit, they do have a beautiful outdoor patio as well - I'd probably try that for next time. read more

Five and Ten is renowned Athens/Atlanta chef Hugh Acheson's flagship restaurant, nestled among the University of Georgia's numerous fraternity and sorority houses. If you weren't looking for it, you might mistake it for another Greek house. In Atlanta, Acheson is known primarily for Empire State South. In Athens, he's got this restaurant and The National. Five and Ten opened in 2000, seemingly ahead of its time. While the food was beautiful and the service was great, there were some hits and misses among the dishes we tried. Overall though, I still think this is a very good restaurant and one that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. This is a contemporary Southern restaurant. It occupies an old house which has been converted into a kitchen, restaurant, and bar. Many rooms of the house now serve as dining rooms and the porch has multiple tables as well for outdoor dining. As all of Acheson's restaurants are, the interior is nicely decorated (the character of the house is maintained) and the atmosphere is casual, but refined. Free parking (about 20 spaces) is available in a paved lot in the back. The restaurant is open for dinner service only except for Sunday brunch (10:30am to last seating at 2:30pm). We visited for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Reservations are recommended. Aside from calling, you can request a reservation on Five and Ten's website at https://www.fiveandten.com/visit. The menu is seasonal. When we visited, the dinner menu had eight "snackies" (priced at $5-22 each; including a charcuterie board), eight small plates ($9-16), seven large plates ($22-42), and six desserts ($9-12). There was also a three-course dinner for two for $40 per person. Beverage-wise, they offer cocktails, wine by the glass, beer, housemade non-alcoholic drinks, and an extensive wine list (by the bottle). We tried a nice sampling of the menu: Cocktails: * Siren's call ($12) - rum, sherry, turmeric honey, sour orange, tonic * Mojito Snackies: * Pimento cheese ($10) - pepper jelly, 5&10 sourdough Small: * Roasted baby kale ($10) - Green goddess, pickled togarashi, mint, spoonbread croutons * Guinea hog belly ($14) - wheat berry miso, salad burnet, brown butter morels, hazelnuts, minutina & scapes * Very fresh ricotta ($10) - barely cooked celtuce, fennel molasses, wild cress, fried levain * Braised lamb leg ($13) - handkerchief pasta, shaved kohlrabi, brassica pesto, beet greens * Turnips cacio e pepe ($9) - fresh & whey pickled turnips, black pepper, Parmesan, butter Large: * Pasta ribbons ($22) - roasted tomato sauce, cherry tomato, jalapeno, Parmesan, mozzarella, basil, arugula * Pork chop ($42) - escarole, baby fennel, tangerine, mustard seed, spoonbread, sauce caline, pork belly * Guinea hog sausage ($34) - creamy polenta, charred baby cabbage, turtle peas, wood roasted hog saddle, sorrel Desserts: * Strawberry & meringue ($9) - toasted walnut, heirloom popcorn, strawberry shrub * Chocolate torte ($9) Buttermilk whip, ginger bourbon cherries, sweet milk powder * Apple brioche donuts ($9) - malted caramel, cinnamon sugar All of the dishes were plated terrifically. Each plate looked like a work of art. On a visual level, the food at this restaurant is one of the most picturesque and memorable I've seen in recent memory. As far as how the food tasted, I'll break it down into The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. - The Good (my favorites): Roasted baby kale, turnips cacio e pepe, pasta ribbons, Guinea hog sausage, chocolate torte. The roasted baby kale and turnips cacio e pepe were outstanding. The kale seemed perfectly picked with each piece having just the right amount of delicious dressing. The turnips were ripe and meaty, cooked to ideal taste and texture. The pasta ribbons were delectable and full of umami flavor. The Guinea hog sausage was relatively mild in flavor, smooth, and satisfying. The chocolate torte was rich, flavorful, and addictive. - The Bad (actually, still good): Pimento cheese, pork chop, apple brioche donuts. I liked the layer of pepper jelly on top of the pimento cheese. It was yummy. The sourdough was toasted and crispy. The pork chop was substantial. It had generous tasty toppings and the meat was savory. The apple brioche donuts were a bit dense, but sweet and not bad at all. - The Ugly (I did not like or really care for these): Guinea hog belly, very fresh ricotta, braised lamb leg, strawberry & meringue. The Guinea hog belly was extremely fatty (too fatty for me). However, the morels were unique and appetizing with robust flavor. The very fresh ricotta simply didn't have much flavor and the fluffy and light strawberry & meringue didn't resonate with me. As for the braised lamb leg, its multi-layered presentation was a bit bizarre to us. The lamb itself wasn't very good. The meat, while moist, tasted bland. The only saving grace was perhaps the soft handkerchief pasta. Service was great. Our server was Marvella. She did a nice job describing the dishes I had questions about. read more

I was in Athens on Easter Sunday and called to inquire if I needed reservations for lunch. "Come on over at 1:00 and we'll have space." I've eaten a number of times at Empire State South in Atlanta, and I knew in the back of mind that Hugh Acheson had a restaurant in Athens. I had no idea how good Five & Ten was. It's in a beautiful old home on South Milledge. Walls removed, beautiful interior, impressive bar and tables out on the porch on Sunday afternoon. Wait-person Marvella was as good as her name: marvellous. (Sorry. Couldn't resist.) In fact she was super helpful with explanations and suggestions. The Shrub -- home-made flavored water -- was excellent. I split mixed greens with my friend. It was the perfect salad. By the time we finished the main courses arrived. I had the lamb hash. The presentation was extraordinary -- a beautiful mixture of colors on a plate topped with a fried egg. And it was terrific. My friend loved the kuku -- a kind of Iranian frittata. We skipped dessert in favor of coffee. All in all it was about as perfect an experience as I've had at a restaurant in years. My only complaint is with myself: why had I not been to Five and Ten before. read more
