Ate there on July 26, 2024. The owner Peter Dale was on site. The starters, duck terrine and shrimp ceviche were wonderful. The mains, roasted salmon and halibut were expertly prepared and the accompaniments brilliantly amplified the dishes. A nice complimentary watermelon sorbet with a handwritten note from Peter completed the evening. Great cocktail service and nice selection of wines by the glass. First stop on a food crawl of Athens. This place was recommended by the front desk of the hotel. Just down the street from frat row, the entire restaurant is built into an old house. My partner and I came in at about 630 on a Saturday and we were able to get seated immediately. They had a prix fix menu for $38 per person (two different options) which would have been a great deal if we weren't just looking for a small plate. We got 2 cocktails, the mussels, and the beef carpaccio. Wow. Food was really good, some of the best mussels I've had and it was with a slightly spicy chili sauce rather than your typical white wine and garlic. The beef was paper thin and came with shaved egg yolk. Rich meaty taste in a composed bite. Overall really good. Wanted to try more. read more

Honestly for the price it was not worth it, 42$ and they give you three scallops and they were cold .... And $68 for a been tenderloin that was over cooked and not that special looking.... The coconut dacarri was good and the cauliflower was alright . The duck liver pâté is served with like these huge pieces of burnt bread when it should be served with a light crostini. Also the French onion dip tasted like straight up ranch and was served with chunky sliced veggies like daikon radish and carrots and was not elegant in presentation. I do not recommend the pana cotta but whatever the dessert is I that had ice cream with a meringue type thing on top was the best thing we had.... This is one of my favorite spots in Athens. The restaurant is located in a renovated home (with a lovely porch) and limited parking. (That should not be a deterrent.) Service is excellent. Every server we have had there has been knowledgeable and friendly Don't pass up appetizers here - they are incredible. If the charcuterie is available, it is a win, win, win. The meats and cheeses are fantastic. Great selections by the chef. Dinners are equally impressive. So far, I have enjoyed the potato gnocchi and the pasta ribbons. Both were decadent. The Frogmore stew also looked like an appealing option. Finally, save room for desert. I have enjoyed the olive oil cake and creme brulee. Both were excellent finishes to the meal. The pacing of the meal is perfect here. It is leisurely, but not slow. Patrons truly have an opportunity to appreciate the high-quality dishes they are served. We had to re order an entree after being there over 90 minutes (because the kitchen had an issue and "86ed" our chicken but she didn't bother to say anything until an hour and a half in. And then it took another 20 for entrees to come out. The president of the University came in after us and was served and left way before our entrée was even served Absolutely horrible. I've been waiting years upon years to eat here. Any spare change while a student in Athens went to penny beer night and not food. A lot has changed since then, I can afford full priced beer and a meal out. I've been to The National and Empire State South, which I super enjoyed. To say I had high expectations for 5&10 is an understatement. The Positive: The ambiance was nice, set up in a big house and our group had our own room. We received ciabatta bread to start our meal. I'm very pro bread. I heard the Frogmore stew was really good from my dining companions, but I erroneously ventured in the wrong direction for my own order. The Negative: After a $10 "snackie" and $13 "smaller" plate, is the expectation to then order a $20+ main? The proportions to price ratio were way off. My snackie came with two toast points and a mason jar of pimento cheese. This is not a $10 dish. I had to request more toast as my friend and I sharing barely made a dent in the jar of cheese. This dish actually offends me. Pimento cheese is not hard to make, so basic. However, the true disaster of this dining experience was the "lamb leg and pasta". This plate was an abomination. It came out and I thought my lamb was raw, but after adjusting my eyes in the dim lighting, noticed I was looking at a glistening red circular pasta flap. Once the flap was lifted, I viewed a spiral of gray, over cooked lamb. And that was that, no sauce or accoutrement. My immediate thought was "wtf", imagine the outrage I felt thinking I was going to receive lamb on a bone over pasta. Outside of being over cooked, the lamb itself was completely flavorless, lacking any bark or coating. I was a very hungry person entering this establishment and left still hungry and now embittered from years of expectations squandered by mystery meat under a glistening flap. read more

So impressed!! We celebrated at Five & Ten for my bachelorette party weekend this past Friday and everyone was raving about the spectacular service, delicious food, and private room. We were a party of 11 and booked a private room, which felt very special and personal. Our server(s) were attentive and thoughtful and always made sure the bride had a full glass :) They coursed the food out perfectly and we enjoyed everything we ordered! Had a fantastic dinner here tonight with my son. Great atmosphere in an old house on millledge. Appetizers - cheese plate nothing special but up to par. 3 cheeses ranging in firmness and compliments lime blueberry compote and a great mustard seed. Me bed on to a dish of hard sautéed bay scallops over pink peas and a Visalia onion butter sauce. Very good and rarely seen bay scallops. Entrees we're the catfish for the son cornmeal crusted, lasted about 10 minutes, an a great grouper special cooked delicately in a Thai lemongrass broth. It was fantastic. All complemented by a crisp Albariño. Desserts we had the meringue with blueberries and a fantastic flourless chocolate cake with caramel sauce. Worth the trip! read more

I had Valentine's Day dinner here with my girlfriend last night. This is a very popular restaurant in town with great reviews and came highly recommended. They had a Valentine's Day menu that was four complete courses and I started with a beet-based salad, had a chicken heart-based Gnocchi dish, my entree was a delicious duck dish, and I finished with the Banana Pudding Cheesecake. It was everything and then some. I feel like it must've been somebody's Grandmother's recipe but the waiter coyly said that he didn't know. I had the flavor of homemade cheesecake with a delicious topping of homemade banana pudding--the baked kind not the Jello pudding kind. The kind that it used to take my Grandmother and now my Mother hours to make but just a few seconds for everyone else to eat up. It was absolutely stupendous. The restaurant has parking in the back and is a very delightful antique decor, almost like you are going to a friend's home or to your Great-Aunt's house to have a delicious dinner on Sunday afternoon. It is located in the beautiful Five Points neighborhood of Athens flanked by a plethora of antebellum homes, many of which are now Fraternity and Sorority Houses at UGA. It was cooked to order and the quality of the meat was good, but the taste was lacking for a $68 price point. There is an incredibly superior filet downtown at Porterhouse that is half the price, has equal or better meat quality, and significantly better flavor. The risotto was still very wet like it hadn't been cooked all the way. Again it lacked a flavor that would warrant a $14 price point. My wife ordered the duck but they ran out, so literally 1 of the 6 entrees was not a possibility. She got the scallops instead and they were unexpectedly spicy and also had a slimy texture we have never seen on scallops before. Possibly undercooked. Overall I would not say this is a place we will be back to ever again. The taste isn't even up to par with a Chilis or Longhorn and the pricing is ridiculous for what is being offered. read more

Exquisite. I could stop right there with a one-word review because everything from the food to the service to the mixology to the ambiance was absolutely perfect. We had a party of five and were seated out on the spacious front veranda. Our server, Rachel, was so friendly and knowledgeable. She helped us pick out the right combo of appetizers, main courses and drinks for the group. Each dish was worthy of five stars and deserves its own review. It's that good. 5&10 was just average in my opinion. Ambiance / setting was great, but the food didn't quite hit the mark. Here is a breakdown of our experience: Food: 2/5 We shared a handful of things below: Beet salad: we weren't fans of this - the beets were thin and crunchy, unlike normal beet salads. Pork belly: The pork belly was really tender but I have had better. Pimento cheese: the pimento cheese was in a small glass jar with jelly. This felt like a weird combination to me but was pretty good. The bread that came with it was average at best. Fresh carrots: this plate of carrots was sort of sad looking and meh. The carrots were fresh but there really wasn't too much to it. Frogmore stew: this had a bunch of seafood in it and a light broth. It was pretty simple, but we enjoyed it. They also nicely split it into two portions since we were sharing. Drinks: 4/5 We had two cocktails to start then a nice barbera. The cocktails were decent and the wine was excellent for the price. Ambiance: 5/5 We got an awesome seat outside on the deck. It was a perfect night to be eating out there. Service: 2/5 For this type of restaurant, the service wasn't as good as expected. We didn't get checked on often and food took a while to come out. Price: 3/5 Coming from NYC, the restaurant of course felt fairly reasonable. "That's four dozen pimento cheese sandwiches gone entirely to waste!" -- Crazy in Alabama (1999) Hugh, how we love you. What an amazing restaurant that seems so unexpected in Athens. Odd for me to say - I am a Bulldog through and through, but in my day - places like this did not exist. Everything was delicious and the server, Bob, did a great job managing my tree nut allergy without hesitation. He and I exchanged a few private chats throughout the evening so as not to call attention to anything - which I also appreciated. The biggest issues were that at table of 10 in a small room made negotiating around the table interesting, and I did feel for the two other couples in the room, trying to have intimate dinners. Also, the service was oddly slow. We ordered drinks, then the drinks came. Then we were able to order apps, then the apps came. Then we were able to order dinner. So the pacing was off. Plus, when meals came to the table - there was no order to it - the servers had no idea who had what dishes - and bit of a free-for-all. But let's talk food. The pimento cheese was amazing, as was the boiled peanut hummus (who knew?). That was all I could really eat of the appetizers, so I ordered my own plate of gnocchi - they prepared it separately from everything else to make sure there was no cross-contamination. Very thoughtful. It was heaven on a plate. Sweet pillows of amazing potato with a crunchy peanut on top, plus blistered tomatoes - pure joy. I also tried a table mate's Shrimp and grits - he won the ordering lottery - definitely the best thing on the menu! As for my entree, I opted for the special - glazed lamb shoulder. Oh dear heavenly jesus. I devoured it and savored every bite at the same time. Served with smoked oyster mushrooms, sea island red pea succotash and pickled green tomato - it was like i died and had gone to heaven. there are not enough worlds to describe this dish. Tender, succulent, falling apart (no knife needed). OMG. Now I tried the tender pork chop with pork belly on top - and it was amazing. But nothing compared to my lamb. This place is not where your normal college kids will go ever. It is a pretty upscale place and the bill has always been at least $200 every time I have been. I am pretty blessed to have eaten here at their old location near Earth Fare and their new location off of Lumpkin. Both locations were beautiful and elegant. I would give them 5 stars, but their entrees did not impress me as much as their appetizers did. It is disappointing how often their menu changes because some items should be permanently on the menu. For appetizers I have had: -OYSTERS ON THE HALF SHELL: Worth each and every single dollar. Each bite is a taste of heaven and usually they have a variety of different oysters. Your sever will definitely tell you. I love the huge oysters the most. It had the most flavor. -GLAZED PORK BELLY: Delicious. Every bite was so delicate. I do not recall what other items I have gotten but you cannot go wrong with their appetizers! I have had at least 4-5 of them already. The entrees were not as memorable for me. It tasted like every other 5 star restaurant entrees I have had. Dessert was also amazing though. It was just a perfect combination. Overall, 5&10 is amazing. The new 5&10 location is Amazing, it has an old farmhouse feel and is appointed exquisitely. The bar area is well laid out, and the bartender, a little slow paced, was accommodating to make a custom drink when they ran out of the wine we ordered. Off of the main bar, in an overflow seating area, you will find a well thought out espresso bar. The menu, although small, is full of flavor and choices. The Gulf Shrimp were prepared perfectly, the garnish really complimented the shrimp, and they were actually pretty fresh by Athens standard. The flat iron steak was full of flavor, cooked perfectly, and the beets actually went well with the meat. The dessert Did NOT disappoint!! The brownie tasted as if had just come out of the oven and the coffee gelato was super, there was even natural bee honey as a garnish. Absolutely one of my favorite dining experiences ever. The staff was knowledgable, fun, thoughtful, and had just the right balance of helpfulness and the ability to leave a table alone to enjoy their meal. I had the new Vittles tasting and every plate was better than the last (the Two Brothers lamb in particular was perfectly cooked). My mother had the steak and couldn't believe how tender it was - it melted in her mouth! When they found out it was my birthday dinner, they treated me to a glass of delicious Cotes du Rhone and even sent me a happy birthday note via Instagram the next morning. Personal service, incredible food, cozy/homey atmosphere without being too slouchy - everything was perfect, and I don't use the word lightly as I'm in the industry myself. We came to 5 & 10 to celebrate my brothers Birthday and this was the only place in the city he wanted to go to and I can see why. This enchanting, Southern mansion, is like a delicious oasis amongst the crazy frat houses that line Milledge Avenue. The over sized front patio is so welcoming with candles on each table, white table cloths and low lighting above. When we pulled up we had a reservation for inside but we asked to sit outside and thankfully, due to the hour, our request was fulfilled. I can't speak about the interior but from what I saw, each room was made up in a different setting of dining room. Dining inside appeared to be a bit more dressy than the people that were dining on the patio but how can you resist patio dining on a late Spring evening? The wine list is incredible. Even if you're not looking to drink, check out the massive list and the incredible selection. 5 & 10 takes things very seriously in the kitchen and its nice to see the same passion is also at the bar. My brother chose a bourbon, I had an off the menu Asti moscato, Marchesi Di Gresy and his girlfriend had the red syrah Qupé. The wait staff is just as impressive as the house itself. We never had to hunt down our server, the drink refills were never a problem and he was very entertaining! Many times that he approached the table we were lost in our own conversation or laughing about something and he never interrupted, just filled our glass or cleared a plate. He knew the menu front and back and gave delicious recommendations from the appetizers (snackies-as they call it) and even the main entree. After too many glasses of wine, I only wish I remembered his name! Even the other staff members that came around to help or ask how everything tasted were accommodating. It makes the dining experience that much better to have people that love their job and love what they do as a part of your team. We ordered the charcuterie plate for 2 and the meats paired perfectly with the different mustard's. I personally preferred the champagne mustard and the classic over the red mustard but that may have been the wine talking! I didn't enjoy the pate as it had an odd texture and was room temperature but the breakfast sausage and the andouille sausage were the first to disappear. As my entree, I chose the trout dish and I only ordered it considering the server stated the crispy skin was left on and the rice grits were to die for. While the fish was fresh the skin was not crispy and the fish itself didn't have a lot of flavor. It is a slap in the face to the chef to season the food but I found myself looking for salt and pepper that wasn't even on the table. Thankfully the beets, mushrooms and grits saved the dish. Not to mention the great sauce that was poured over the top. I had a bite of my brothers girlfriends Magret duck and it was a bit fatty as compared to another duck dish I've tried at a different restaurant but it paired perfectly with the artichoke and fava beans that were also on the plate. My brothers low country Frogmore strew had huge shrimp tails and 2 pieces of grilled bread that soaked up the tomato broth that everything swam in. For dessert, they even plated my brothers birthday cake and lit the candles for us and made a grand entrance. It was a perfect end to our meal and to a big Birthday celebration. This was my first time. I ordered the trout over cabbage. The trout was over seasoned to the point I couldn't tell it was trout and overcooked. The cabbage that was paired with it clashed with the fish taste and spices. It would have been better with a rice pilaf. Half of the dish was warm and the other was cool as was the the rest of the food. It makes me think that only half of the dish was halfway under a heat lamp while the other dishes were prepared. Almost every dish I have ever eaten here comes with a non-traditional twist and has exceeded my expectations every time. I have generally had good experiences here over the years. I was nervous when I heard the chef left, but was eager to check out the new one. My Husband and I both ordered fish dishes and they both came out very, very raw. My husband had catfish and you can get very ill from eating undercooked catfish, and it was literally so raw it was cold. I don't think my husband has ever sent a plate back before in his life, but he did this time. When it was returned to him, it was still raw on the inside. I didn't even bother trying to return my undercooked fish. We gave up and didn't eat our food. I feel like this issue would be inexcusable at a fast food restaurant, much less the most expensive restaurant in Athens. I'm glad that neither of us got sick from eating there. read more

Went here for dinner with my parents because my mom is a fan of Hugh Achenson. I will say we are generally disappointed by the restaurants we visit from chefs we love on tv but this is one of the first to not disappoint! The food is French style - I wish they incorporated some southern flare into it. Service was good, except they forgot our French press coffee when we ordered dessert, we ended up not bringing it up as it wasn't on our bill and we no longer wanted it at the time. Now I do think this is definitely a one time occasion restaurant, I wouldn't come here more than maybe once a year if even. The food is good but just so pricey for the small portions. Paid around $54 for the beef tenderloin (I also think my potatoes were over salted but that may just be me, I'm not a big fan of salty) and if you look at the photo it is a pretty small portion. My mom switched the sides that normally came with the catfish to come with her scallops and she loved it (the scallops usually comes with different sides such as peas and I believe it's served in a stew or broth?). I think the scallops worked better with the rice though! The restaurant has homemade soda pop so don't expect any Coke or Pepsi here, I ordered the lemonade ($3) and I loved it my parents had sweet tea and my dad had their version of an Old Fashioned as well. The bacon and pimento cheese appetizer and the cornbread appetizer were also amazing so I highly recommend those! The restaurant is a historic house transformed which is very cool, there is even a bathtub in the bathroom haha and the only other thing is if your meeting people I recommend carpooling or Uber/Lyft they have limited parking behind the home! The name of this restaurant should be Nickle & Dime!!!! A $34 entree in Athens, GA should be absolutely beautiful in taste & presentation. Not the equivalent of a Swanson's TV dinner! This review breaks my head to write because I've been dining at this beautiful restaurant for years. I hope Chef Atcheson will heed these comments because I would truly love to see Five and Ten back up to standard. Over the last several months, I have seen the food decline in presentation, imagination & flavor. The best part of the restaurant is the wine list & the servers. The food is really bad. Tonight, husband ordered a $34 chicken with dressing & gravy. It looked like cafeteria food & had no flavor. I had a $16 BLT that was lackluster at best. I hope the passion comes back & this restaurant is restored to its former glory. Oh and the desserts are the topper for a forgettable meal. We visited 5&10 on a Saturday night having made a weekend trip to Athens. We have dined at Empire State South many times and were looking forward to visiting Hugh Acheson's other restaurants The National and 5&10 while in town. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation so we could enjoy a drink at the bar. While waiting we couldn't help but try the Tortelli app and while waiting the bartender surprised us with the pimento cheese plate with bacon on top. The pimento cheese app reminded us of the famous "jars" as ESS. Both were out of this world and you must try them. Once we were seated we split the watermelon salad and a couple of glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. Oh wow after typing all of this it really reenforces that we had a lot of food! but it was hard to resist... So fInally, i ordered the Mississippi Rabbit loin. Rabbit seems to be appearing on a lot of menus lately and it is my new favorite thing. I wasn't disappointed. Julie ordered the pasta dish and didn't love it because it was spicy despite the description and she is not a fan of spicy. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience. The new location is in an old renovated house that is perfect for an evening out. Dinner service was slow but we attribute that to the new facility.
