I had my car serviced here a while back from an accident and wanted to get it checked out since it wasn't shifting well and ended up finding the problem myself . They did a job improperly which I did get reimbursed for the labor. I have to say besides that how disappointed I am with the communication .. absolutely terrible.. front desk junior was very passive aggressive and I addressed that right then and there and his excuse was he ain't have his cereal and smoke yet to start his day and referred the passive aggressiveness to being "loud" but ok.. absolutely unprofessional , should have told the owner when it happened but here we are . Mechanics just checked solenoids prior to what I had done already and checked wiring they not once checked the computer TCM until I pulled it out myself it was cracked due to heat expansion when I had it back home . They tried reprogramming my computer but didn't even inspect it and I had that car for a while there . It was a waste of time and had changed a speed sensor that might be sending wrong signals to the vehicle because it jumped shifts but they didn't even complete that right either with erasing and calibrating the sensor and asked for photos of the sensor when it's put on and neither got that either from junior . :) so long story short I installed a new computer with my cars vin and programmed it and now my car is running perfect , which I got my time wasted here :) appreciate the reimbursement from the owner for all of this .. but everything else they need to do better man . I sent my husband to Tramcar for an ESTIMATE on my MIL'S minivan based on all the positive reviews online. Sadly, the experience was nothing like what I read. He spoke to Cary, who wanted him to leave the car for a day and half. Not convenient but OK, they are busy. He called back on the 2nd day and spoke to Junior. I heard the conversation and did not like the attitude. He was told that they hadn't finish testing and didn't know when they would call back. 5 hours later, my hisband called again. Now he was told the vehicle needed a new transmission but would only tell him that it would be $1650 plus parts. That is NOT a quote. Illinois law requires written estimates and that is what we were requesting. On top of that, Junior told him he would need $1,650 up front. I wouldn't have had an issue if we were provided an actual estimate. I am the final decision maker and said no. My husband went to pick up the car and Junior proceeded to take him in the back to see a transmission as if to scare my husband, a rerired aircraft mechanic. All of the reviews I read talked about professionalism,honesty and fair prices. Maybe we dealt with them on an off day but we saw none of those qualities. read more

I took my 2010 Honda Accord to a local shop and they confirmed to me that my transmission was out and they don't do transmissions. I had my boyfriend call Tramcar and he spoke to Jr who told him it's $1500 in labor and then whatever parts it'll need. I used my one free tow from my insurance to have my car towed to Tramcar; Jr calls me after my car has been there for over 24 hrs and tells me that it's a transmission issue. I knew that already so I asked how much with parts; this man says "oh we need to take it apart to look and see what's wrong with it but it's a $1500 down payment (non refundable)". So my mother and father spoke to Jr and basically told him how is it he can't give a ball park of an estimate? We have to trust you with $1500 and then cross our fingers and hope that the parts you need won't cost me more than my car is worth? Jr said I'd need to pay the $1500 and after he looks at it and tells me what parts it needs with pricing then I can choose to go forward with them. So basically I can pay him $1500 and if my parts cost me more than my car is worth, I still lose out on $1500. It was a gamble my family and I weren't willing to risk because $1500 is a lot of money to lose out on. Jr. gets into an argument with my mother and father over the phone (we were on three way with Jr) because Jr was highly offended by them asking questions and being confused about the $1500 down payment and also the fact that he didn't even check to see what's wrong with it. It resulted with Jr demanding I get a tow truck to get my car out of there and he hung up. Jr calls me back to speak to me only and I tried to apologize for their argument. Jr boldly made comments about my mother and says "business is great this won't affect my shop". Even still I tried to remain cordial with him. I arranged for a tow truck to get my vehicle and take it to another shop and I gave a courtesy call to Jr to let him know and he said okay. Minutes later the tow truck driver contacted Jr and told him he'll be there at 4pm and all of a sudden Jr states he is closing today at 3pm when his hours are till 5:30. I call Jr and his attitude is disgusting and he's refusing to put my key under the mat so a tow truck can pick it up. I mention to him how his website says they close at 5:30 and he replies "well today I'm closing it at 3". This sad excuse of a man wanted to inconvenience me so bad even though u remained respectful to him and he got into his little feelings that he tried to keep my vehicle overnight so I can pay an overnight charge. YEAH OKAY. My uncle who is also a police officer went and successfully got my vehicle for me. It's 4:47pm and I had my boyfriend call the shop and he spoke to Jr himself and he asked him "I thought the shop closed at 3pm today". Shows how disgusting Jr is and what he represents. I live in the neighborhood and will let everyone know how Jr runs his daddy's little scam shop. Ps The shop I took my car to after this scam shop told me that my transmission was fine, it was my axel. I feel beyond blessed they didn't get a dime out of me. read more

I called on a weekend to talk to them about a transmission replacement that another shop said was needed. He told me that based on the pricepoint that another shop told me, they are probably not really rebuilding the transmission. The other shop had a price which was lower than 6 other transmission specialists, so it seemed a bit out of line. Gary talked to me and said that he'd like to check out the car for free and see if he agrees that it needs a rebuilt\new transmission and then from there, that he'd give a price range so that we're fully aware. I was pleased with their service. After some internet research of jerky 1-2 shifts when cold on my Mercedes (E320 CDI) 722.6 transmission I learned it was possibly the TCC/PWM solenoid. I purchased the solenoid and took it to Tramcar for installation. They were knowledgeable, friendly and installed the solenoid in a couple hours at a very fair rate. Honda dealer wanted $4800.00 to install a remanufactured trans on my 2005 Accord V6. My car was dragging and wouldn't go faster than 40 mph. It jolted into next gear when accelerating. This all started on last Tuesday. We had it towed to dealer same day. It only had 63k miles. Dealer diagnosed transmission replacement by Thursday. While at the dealer, I called American Honda to see if they would cover any part of the cost of the repair. They said that since the car was purchased use in 2008; and also because it was Not part of the R89 recall they wouldn't provide any help to defray all or part of the cost. We then had Tramcar Transmission Specialists pick up the car with their tow truck service ( maybe just 4 miles from the dealer). By Friday, Tramcar gave us a $2500.00 estimate with a one year/12000 mile guarantee on a complete rebuild of the existing transmission. We agreed and the work was done by Tuesday morning. Torque converter and a bearing was replaced. All soft parts were replaced. Cooler was flushed and filters and trans fluids replaced. Car now seems to run like new. Tramcar did ask that we come back in two weeks, so that they can check that all the bolts are holding as they should and that no new diag codes have been created. So far am very satisfied with Tramcar. They also did some Cadillac work for me a few years ago and was very satisfied with that too. (96 Deville needed a new speed sensor-- that required dismantling the trans). read more

They replaced my transmission and computer three years ago and both are failing again. They found me in their system but when they found out I needed a new transmission basically bottom lined me that if I didn't have the paper invoice, they weren't fixing anything under the original agreement. Also claiming my stuff should work fir 20 years but their warrantee is only one. Fantastic. Since they changed ownership they claim the old owner deleted all digital files and is keeping all the hard copy files... which they aren't prepared to ask for. Horrible. Scam alert. read more

I must say even though I couldn't afford to get my trans rebuilt at this time, I must give props to the experience with Tramcar transmission specialists. Props to Cary who answered every email & question I had even before bringing my vehicle to him as I was very hesitant to bring it to anyone else than my mechanic. He did a "free" trans check which involved a thorough road test, a lift exam, fluid level and condition check and finally a computer scan. Once they completed this check he immediately was able to give me the very thorough diagnostic results & different proposals of what I could do to get my vehicle repaired. I decided to call this place even though it was not the closest to me and the closest one offered free towing (my car would not start). But the car is old and I was afraid that the fix would cost more than the car (in which case I would just donate it) and since there is no free lunch in the land of the free the idea of free towing didn't seem a good way to start. So I called this place and asked how much towing and estimate would be. They said (after asking where I was located) that towing would be 65, the estimate would be free. I said good, lets start with that. The next day they called me and gave me the estimate (which was close to the least I expected to pay) that already included the towing. Very well I said, go ahead and do the repair. That estimate what exactly what I paid in the end. They also told me when I paid that the repair includes a one year warranty. don't go to tramcar you will regret it. torch converter and total rebuild on my 2000 toyota 4 runner. first converter my car vibrated and poor acceleration would not go over 70. second converter, same deal but milder effect. the third converter install was better than the first two, worked. upon inspection from toyota dealer it was a sloppy job and i then learn the lesson of after market hack mechanic, like carey @ tramcar. the dealer is more expensive because they don't use inferior parts and schooled on specific disciplines with brands repairs. my car was obviously running poorly and with each converter replacement but carey was reluctant to do the replacements and pushed back each time and said it my car had other problems before. fortunate for me i had a complete tune-up three days before, in fact it was the place that did the tune up said i would need a transmission repair place to look at my torch converter. so after all the grief, i lawyer"ed"-up and continued to document the events of mis-repairs. i have pictures and each phone call and conversation was recorded, which can be used in small claims with out the acknowledgment of the second person. a year later and per my warranty had to have my car inspected. again i had my car looked and documented twice by two independent dealers, and careful not to use the same ones as the previous years, found a leak in the transmission........ so off to court we go!!!!! if you decided to still use tramcar, please have your car inspected by the dealer first, document it. read more

My wife brought her Acura MDX to the McGrath Acura dealer on Elston Ave to have a bank one catalytic converter replaced as this is what the reading from the check engine light advised. While they did that they managed to come up with another $8,000 work of work they said needed to be done. Among the 'urgent' repairs they advised was a new transmission which was going to cost $4500. Thankfully I decided to get a second opinion. I called Tramcar and Cary, the owner, answered the phone at 7pm on a week night. He spoke to me at length concerning the MDX and the symptoms I described. He told me they had diagnostic equipment that could tell if there was an issue with the transmission without opening it up. He also said they would be no charge for the diagnosis and he would give me a list of repairs necessary and their cost after performing the diagnosis. If no repairs were necessary there would be no charge. I brought the car there at 8am the next morning. He called me back at about 10.30am to say the transmission was fine but another one of the catalytic converters was blocked. He was able to replace the second converter for $200 and I had him do a transmission flush for $140. He said he could not understand how the mechanic who replaced the first converter did not observe the blockage in the one after it? The MDX is now back driving as it should and I will always appreciate Tramcar's integrity and workmanship. The dealer, if not for Tramcar's honesty and superior mechanical skills, would have invoiced me for $8,000 worth of work and not fixed the problem. read more
