An honest, friendly mechanic, who won't overcharge you and actually wants to help you. Another place nearby gave me an insanely high estimate for the parts alone after a minor accident that was three times as much as what Pete managed to find. The labor costs are always going to be pricy, but it was less for that here as well. It's never fun when you need auto repairs, but Pete and his team know what they're doing, and will get things done in a timely manner without trying to add on things that you don't need. I'm no mechanic, but I know enough about cars to do some of the repairs myself and what to seek and expect in a repair shop. Having a conversation with the owner, I felt at ease bringing my older european car for an alignment after I changed out the inner and outer tie rods myself at home. I asked enough questions to know they are installing quality parts and not cheap junk parts. These guys didn't upsell me anything like a lot of corporate repair shops try to do. Very fair pricing after I called around. Don't be put off by all the cars stuffed in their lot. It's a sign of the amount of business they get. Don't expect a shiny office here. Yes, I said it, there is a mechanical shop that does honest business! Pete's Auto takes pride in it's service, as displayed in awards and plaques all over the walls of the establishment. Please take my word for it and give them a shot. As usual,there's a diagnostics fee so they can see what's going on. That fee is then applied to an cost of repairs. They are upfront about current and potential problems with your vehicle. but they will get it fixed however you like. As much as you may like them, Pete's is going to get your vehicle running for a while before you have to see them again! After several recommendations from the Portage Park Neighborhood Facebook group, I checked the reviews for Pete's Automotive and saw a ton of great reviews. I figured I'd call and see what they can do for me. I had reached out to several other shops just to check availability and get an estimate of the brake job I needed for my VW Tiguan. When I got around to speaking to Pete, he was incredibly helpful and let me know an approximate price, but then said he'd check out my rotors to see if I'd even need to replace them in the first place so I can save some money. I loved his honest and helpful approach. After all, of the other shops I called, 1 said he didn't work on foreign cars, another was bending over backward to avoid giving me any pricing on the phone unless I brought the car in, and another was $300 more than what Pete quoted, and let me know they'd have to get the right tools for the brake job which would make the service more expensive. After all that, I asked Pete if I can bring it in and if the job would be done by the afternoon because I had a doctor's appointment. He promised it would be done by then and completely followed through. Once I took the car in, he noticed I was waiting by the shop as I was getting ready to call an Uber to get back home, so he asked where I lived and then said, "I'm gonna take your car for a drive to get a feel for the brakes, I can drive you home". Sure enough, he took me home so I wouldn't have to call for a ride. Talk about going the extra mile. The shop called me at around 1pm, earlier than expected, and he let me know the job was done. He mentioned the oil and radiator fluid were low, but that he'd top it off for me. He checked the belt for me and told me that it's still in good shape and there's no need to replace it. I'm used to having mechanics sneaking in more services and parts, and here was Pete telling me not to change things because they were fine as is and there was no need to replace it for a while. When I picked up the car, the total came out just slightly higher than what was quotes on the phone, to which he scratched off the overage and said, "I'm only going to charge you what I told you on the phone", even though he added fluids and did a few extra things for me. As I drove back home, the brakes worked like a charm, far better than they were when I brought the car in. No noises, no steering wheel shaking, and amazing stopping power. I was completely satisfied with the quality of work they provided and was pleasantly surprised at my overall experience. All I can say is, I've found my new mechanic. Pete really took the time to make sure I was a well-informed customer, and his friendliness, honesty, and integrity shined through. That was a few days ago, but as a result of their fine work, I brought my car back for a radiator flush, which was done in a timely manner as well. I could go on and on about how great Pete and is crew are. I hate trying to find an honest mechanic in the city. I was having some brake issues so used Yelp for help. There's a reason Pete has 5 stars. Anything less than that should not be read. I drove to Pete's without an appointment on a Friday. They were really busy so I didn't think I had a chance. Pete personally checked out my car. I feel he gave me the best price that he could. He is super personable and I could tell right away that he has built many relationships over the years. People just stopped in to say hi while I was there. :). They were able to fix my car in a few hours. To top it off, he bought me an amazing Greek lunch! I went there for much needed oil change and tire rotation. I know this is not major repair but I was there long enough to see the moving parts of the business. Everyone in the shop was very busy and they were conferring with each other about concerns. That is a good sign to me. They were extremely professional and when I asked a question, they did not "mansplain". Incredible value and service at Pete's! I found Pete's after receiving horrible car service and customer service consistently at the Honda on Grand. After my first experience at Pete's, I'll never take my car anywhere else. They helped me troubleshoot an issue I was having with my car battery, free of charge, and when I needed my alternator replaced it was diagnosed on the spot. Even better - they replaced it in under 3 hours and probably under half of what I would've been charged at Honda! They're old school here, but honest and know their stuff. TERRIBLE! What's TERRIBLE is that we didn't find his shop sooner! We have a 2010 Dodge grand Caravan SXT that we knew need some Extra services. The first shop we brought it to try to charge my wife over thousand dollars for the same work that Pete did for $800. What's worse than that?The first shop that we brought it to knew that there were only two nuts holding the strut on: one of them was missing and one had almost worked its way completely off... Dangerous for my wife and kids, and they let her drive off like that. A 10 minute fix at best. Pete and his guys were honest, very transparent and no nonsense. They did an excellent job! I love this place! It's very convenient because it's across from the Blue Line stop and I can drop my key off in the box very early morning and pick up after work. Tim and Pete are both up front honest people and hard workers, very hard to find that nowadays. I take my 2002 Lincoln LS to them all the time for brakes and oil changes and always do a good job and always explain to me what needs to be done and if the part DOES not need to be changed they won't change it. I cannot say enough good things about Pete and the staff at his shop. We were passing through Chicago from Virginia to Wisconsin when our truck's brakes went out on the Kennedy Expressway. We just happened to stumble in to Pete's shop and he squeezed us in, made a great diagnosis and fixed our leaking brake line and got us back on the road quicker than we had a right to expect. Eddy charged us a price much less then he could have or should have. Absolutely first-class treatment for travelers passing through. Since we had a couple of hours to talk to other people coming in and out of the shop while we were there we quickly learned how trusted and valued Pete is by his neighbors in the community. These folks are friends and neighbors in the very best sense of the word and of the highest traditions of American hospitality.
