I am not sure if TJ's come in different sizes, but this one seems on the small side of other TJ's I have been to. That said, they seem to have all the usual TJ items you see at all the locations. I went there for some veggies, some kids snacks, and a couple other things, and was able to find them all. The staff was really nice and chatted up my son at the checkout and gave him some stickers. The one tough spot here is the parking. The lot is both tiny and very tight. It is hard to get around if you are there after work or on a Saturday. Everything you've already read about this Trader's parking lot is true. I was about to set my car insurance number on my phone before entering, well of course not. There is a blind alley within the alley and a stop sign as soon as you would enter. And I thought the St Paul location was the tight and dangerous fender bender joy spot! It now ranks second. On to the store. Same items but there seemed to be more snacks than I've seen at other Joe's, and those with a creative seductive 'pick me' look. I love Trader Joe's. I really do. The service is always amazing: folks are friendly, helpful, and genuinely seem to enjoy helping and delivering a little extra joy (I somehow always leave happier than when I came in). It's a little bit of balm for the spirit along with your groceries. The selection is also amazing--along with your regular groceries and sundries, you can find unique items available both seasonally and year-round. I am especially partial to shopping their perimeter: excellent produce at a great price, including items that you can't always find elsewhere, a great ready-to-eat section with items for everyone (carnivores, vegans, gluten-lovers, and gluten-free folks: they've got something you'll love), and a highly respectable cheese case with the basics and some fancies, all at appealing prices. Visiting this Trader Joe's at the right time is very important. For some reason this place is always chaotically busy! Crowded aisles, yelling employees, so on. The staff is nice although some cashiers can be hit or miss. The selection is decent, it's not a huge store and they were out of a number of things on my last visit (granted it was after the holiday). I do love that they have gluten free, dairy free, and other dietary specific foods. The vibe of this place is very hustle and bustle. Before I get into my overall impression of Trader Joe's [TJ's] I want to go on a fairly lengthy review of TJ's Smoked Ghost Chiles. The grinder makes a rare (once a year - seasonally?) appearance in the spice section. I'm told that when it does it sells out fairly quickly. As a fan myself I get it. However please take it from me that a very little goes a long way. I'm a person who enjoys hot (spicy) food [I empty a container of Kill 'em Wid It sauce at Pimento, add generous dollops of Harry Singh's bottled hot sauce, have sampled (and liked) some of the spicy hottest local wings, etc]. However there is something about the smoked, dried chiles that makes the accompanying grinder virtually superfluous. Better the spice "came with a tweezer" as friend suggested. I was warned several times in advance but of course I thought that I knew better. I put a couple of twists into some chili I was preparing. Yikes!!! Only after diluting it by adding a cup of Mission Salsa (which in contrast tasted like ketchup) and a generous amount of shredded CoJack cheese did the concoction go from being so hot as to be inedible (for all but the most adventurous among us) to consumable (barely). I have learned (I hope) from my cooking hubris. A pinch of the spice is all that is needed. BTW, don't place your hands anywhere near your eyes until they have been thoroughly washed. In fact you might not want to store the grinder anywhere near anything remotely flammable, (just sayin'). I was fortunate to have avoided self immolation myself and remain grateful that TJ's offers the chiles. I only want to share this cautionary tale with others to prevent possible suffering ;-). Anyway, I have been shopping at TJ's for years (usually at this location or the one north of 394 in Minnetonka). It took me a while to figure out how the store worked for me but now I think that I understand what it is and what it is not. It is not a buy all groceries kind of place and frankly not everything appeals to me. The bulk nuts can occasionally taste stale and the the dried fruit can be tough and desiccated. That said I do have a near addiction to their Chili Spiced Mango. An assortment of other favorites (I'm thinking they come as no surprise to veteran shoppers) include: Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Dark Chocolate Almonds, Cold Brew concentrate, "Everything But" seasoning, frozen Breaded Chicken Breast, frozen Hashed Brown patties (they look like something you might get elsewhere but these are much better), frozen Jasmine Rice, frozen Chicken Tikka Masala, frozen Tiramisu, assorted salsas, assorted juices and a fairly wide variety of what strikes me as flavorful while wandering the aisles. Free samples are a frequent offering and I have subsequently purchased some real unexpected treats that way (after all, isn't that what samples are for). Parking at this particular location can be challenging (try parking on the street or in the free ramp nearby). The lot at the Mtka location is much easier and the store is larger than its SLP counterpart. I have found that I don't go to TJ's for routine stuff. But it has selections that you don't often find elsewhere and purveys some pretty amazing items at a decent value. Look around TJ's if you are so inclined and I wouldn't be at all surprised if you run across something(s) irresistible. read more

This isn't about all Trader Joe's (where I've been shopping for well over a decade) but about this specific location. I normally visit the downtown location. Came here yesterday evening, and I was bent down to get some snacks on the bottom shelf of a rack where jerky was hanging. A young black girl came out of the back area with a dolly full of boxes, and ran into me with it. Now, accidents happen. But what did she do? Did she apologize, or ask if I was alright? No! She said, "Oh... my... god" very drawn out and dramatically, like I had inconvenienced her somehow by being there. Then she and her coworkers started cracking up laughing. Next, they went back through the swinging doors they'd just come out of, and proceeded to hysterically laugh. They didn't try to be quiet about it. Everyone shopping could hear them. Apparently hitting someone is so funny. Worst experience I've ever had just trying to buy groceries, and I will never return. read more

I can't believe this, I'm so excited I'm shaking. I just stepped into and shopped in the first Trader Joe's in MN This is what I was told, and if you heard otherwise please don't ruin this for me. Because of its pretty urban location, the parking lot may struggle to accommodate everyone. I parked on the street. As far as products and service, my very attentive cashier noticed an egg that was a bit on the brittle side and had a co-worker bring me a 'better' carton. I love this TJ's - I come here all the time for most of my groceries. As we all know, TJs doesn't have everything so I usually have to stop at a Cub or Lunds on the way home, but the prices and quality at TJs are just unbeatable. The staff at this location are super friendly, it even has a joined liquor store, and they have some surprisingly good meat prices - especially the drumsticks, shaved beef (for sandwiches), leg of lamb, and salmon. I'm always a fan of TJ's and whenever we're in this part of the city, this is the location we come to (but my fave is Woodbury: huge parking lot). Great products, prices & service! Pretty much all TJ's are alike, 5 stars. The only reason I gave this location 4 stars is because of their tiny, horrid parking lot. It's a fender bender always waiting to happen. We never park in their lot. PRO TIP: park in the Excelsior & Grand parking garage that's just down the street. It's free, and it'll hopefully lessen your chances of your car getting dinged. They also have apartments above their store, so I can only imagine the rent there! But what convenience for those residents! read more

Believe it or not, this was my first time ever in a Trader Joe's, and wow. Affordable, delicious and SO MANY options. I visited close to open at about 9:45am on a Tuesday. It wasn't busy at all, and note that they do restrict the amount of people in the store and masks are required. Anyway, the produce can be pricier than other places, so I recommend shopping for those else-where (there's a Fresh Thyme farmers market down the street) but you CANNOT beat their packaged food. The options, pricing and taste are second to none. I will absolutely have to go back for more focaccia bread (highly recommend). The only thing about my visit that I didn't like too much was that their carts were exclusively outside, which I wasn't used to so I walked into the store to grab one, but they only had baskets. This was fine, but I didn't get nearly as much food as I wanted to because of it I'll definitely be back to try more. read more

It is a great location with all of the products and customer service you know and love. It is also such a wonderful place for flowers... I often come here for that aspect alone. Well....what can I say about Trader Joe's that hasn't already been said??? Despite it being out of the way for me, here's why I go: 1) the flowers are inexpensive, ranging from $3.99-$9.99, and of really good quality. 2) the churro's in the frozen dessert section are pretty good. I find that I never use/need the entire packet of cinnamon sugar therefore I save the rest for other foods....like waffles. Also for a great dipping sauce melt some chocolate using hot heavy cream and then add orange zest. YUM! 3) the tea tree shampoo at $3.99 is just as good as the pricier Aveda brand and I love the tingle on my scalp. The conditioner is also good. 4) the Joseph Handler Sweet Red wine at $5.99 which I love, despite not being a fan of red wine. This is such a wonderful store and I am sure that I would just repeat everyone else's reviews if I tried to describe it. Instead, I am going to list some awesome foods I tend to always get. Almost anything frozen is worth it! I love to stock up on the vegetables and mixes to have on hand at all times. My favorite has to be the organic superfood pilaf! Also, it's nice to have frozen pineapple, mango and figs on hand when they're out of season. Other staples are curry, cheese, ginger soda, yogurt and mixed nuts. Don't forget to grab some chocolate covered sea salt butterscotch caramels on your way out!! The only negative for this location, is the parking situation sucks! read more

I am rating this store four stars for something that's actually not their fault: The parking situation. I hate it. People don't pay attention in the lot, so both my body and my vehicle have been nearly hit here. Now, I LOVE Trader Joe's. This store gets me. They have a lot of organic, sustainable foods, which are in my wheelhouse. They have interesting, funky things, for people who like food adventures in the comfort of their homes. I always like to find something that I've either never eaten before or haven't eaten in ages. Walking their aisles gives me inspiration to create some great dishes at home. The organization where I'm a volunteer cook has been a beneficiary of the ideas I've gotten here. Another thing that I love about this place is the fact they have staff who are actually helpful. I never am made to feel like it's a bother or that I'm an idiot, even when I'm standing right in front of what I can't seem to find - LOL. This store has been open for a while. I tend to avoid it for a couple of reasons: the parking lot it a cluster f and there are simply too many choices in the area with Whole Foods, Lund's, and now Fresh Tyme. I made my way into the terrible parking lot in the hole, which shares an entrance to the parking for the lofts upstairs. I'm sure the people who live there love that! I took the time today to really experience the store; it's a pretty store, smells nice and is lit attractively, with lots of blue, green, and yellow all around. The staff greets you, like most nice stores. I quickly realize that this place has bomb frozen foods! At least, the selection and prices are I'll let you know how they taste. I got some Thai chili veg burgs, falafel, spinach lasagna, and Mac and cheese lol. The best part, the reason this store is getting an unheard of five stars, is because behind the checkout counter was a very friendly, attractive, bearded, big flirty hot dude. I came here right when the stay at home order occurred and as crazy as it was. But I had a WONDERFUL experience! Staff was working sooo hard to keep shelves stocked all done with a smile on their face! Staff was friendly, cheerful and positive even in those stressful times. They were more then willing to help me find alternatives to my usual purchases (that were out of stock) and gave wonderful recommendation on items that I ended up loving and was very appreciative of their help. Overall the staff here made my experience amazing! Especially in the stressful situation of people stocking up I went in and forgot about the world situation because of how cheerful and helpful they were. Methinks they probably just hire happy people. True, the parking lot is tiny and awkward. True, you can't get your whole list here. But I've managed to spend over $200 here. Today I came for a raw honey and saw a cool coffee scrub. I wish they had regular cucumbers but I bought their English cucumbers. I bought some daffodils the other day I think they were $1.50 a bunch. I like their coconut milk, I've bought Lara bars here, Rosemary deli ham is amazing, so is their white bean hummus. I realize that the parking is very tight but I much prefer this TJ's to the one in Minnetonka which is like a big box store with no charm.

I love the layout of this place too. No matter which entrance you use, you are greeted by the flowers and they are always beautiful at a range of prices. Also that they are out of the way of food buying. One of the staples is their own whipped cream and it is the best. I almost flipped that they still had cartons of lemonade. Milk, eggs, nicely packaged swiss cheese, pita bread and I was lured by ghee. I think I'd go out of my way to shop here at least if I'm in the neighborhood anyway. read more

I do the majority of my grocery shopping here. Especially these days when I have so little time to cook, it's great that they have options for quick, prepared foods that are natural, gourmet-ish and healthy (not always all three, but good options nonetheless). It's also an easy stop for party snacks. Some of my favorite buys are the organic arugula, frozen French green beans (haricot vert, if you wanna be fancy), lemon pepper pappardelle, turkey meatballs, grapeseed oil, chicken potstickers, frozen garlic naan, frozen palak paneer, pre-cooked chicken (though I never thought I'd ever buy such a thing), white bean hummus, whole wheat pizza dough, dark chocolate-covered pretzels, Greek yogurt and proscuitto. The only things I usually don't buy here are meat and produce because it's overwhelmingly cheaper to do that at Rainbow or Cub. I also buy most of my wine from TJs, but the liquor shop is not so great for beer. I had to take a star off for the horror they call a parking lot. It's small, crowded and people do not know how to drive. While waiting for another spot a year or two ago, I was hit by a woman backing out of her spot without paying attention (my car was in the exact place it was when she got into her car, which was RIGHT behind her car). Anyway, I usually park on Excelsior near the front entrance or across the street in front of Guild and just walk the 1/2 block so I don't have to deal with that nightmare. read more

Do all Trader Joe's have terrible parking lots?! I used to go to Trader Joe's all the time when I lived in Massachusetts, and I chose to walk there instead of driving because of the terrible parking lot. Now that I don't live near a TJ's in MN, I have to drive and deal with the unfortunate parking lot at the SLP location. When I run out of cheap wine and frozen meals, I always end up making the trip back to Trader Joe's. Favorites that are always on my list: - Frozen pasta meals (super easy, and perfectly portioned for 2) - Bananas - Raisin rosemary crisps - Cheese *lately I've been excited about the pre-portioned brie and goat cheese packs - Spices - Reasonably-priced sparkling wine (cremant, prosecco, cava, etc...)! - Cards *good selection of cards, all priced at $0.99! I agree with many Yelpers' thoughts saying that the produce and meat aren't great, but this store is worth going to for pantry staples, wine, and frozen foods. read more

One of my fav chocolate bars is from TJ and we were there shopping I looked around for it couldn't find it. John asked if he could help. I didn't know the name of the bar or the percentage of coco. I just described the color of the wrapper and he looked it up on their database. He said their might be a box of it arriving that night. It was also 2min to close time. They are great for some of their specialty items: cinnamon covered graham crackers, chocolate covered items, animal crackers, etc. However we have stopped buying mainstream grocery staples. We've found their milk has been close to expiration. Produce is hit and miss. Etc. But we love them for their own brand name specialty goods. Also, their inexpensive wines also seem to be of good value. I LOVE Trader Joe's. No, I mean, I REALLY DO. It is BAE. Where else can you go to get really organic produce, meat, and other fun and interesting items at a price that won't break the bank? My love affair with TJ's started a few years ago, namely at the St. Paul location. I'm not even sure how i found out about it; all I know, is once I started to shop there, the feeling was mutual, and I haven't stopped going there since. Even when I briefly moved to another state, I had to find out where the nearest TJ's locations were so I could be sure to shop there every chance I could. Now, we all know I'm not the only one who loves TJ's, so it tends to get busy and parking is not the greatest at this location, as others have so noted in their reviews. The lot is small, and some of the angles of the parking spots are a little weird. One would be lucky to get a spot in front, but nonetheless, it can be held. The inside is always tidy, and the associates seem to keep themselves busy. The offerings, as mentioned above, are affordable and delicious, such as organic Rainier cherries, organic grapes,, etc. I usually stick to certain items, myself, (organic spinach, organic eggs, Brussels sprouts--for 99 cents, no doubt!, organic corn chips), but I also like to try new items, too, if they catch my eye. The only bad thing about this location, is the parking lot. I have almost been hit by cars backing out while your waiting for the line of cars to move several times. They could almost have a full time attendant out there. But then again, we are all adults here so we should all be expected to know how to drive. Besides the lot, this place is fantastic! The staff here is so friendly! The selections are amazing! Even though there are literally only 4 aisles, I could easily spend hours at this store looking at all the different packaging and food options. It is one of those stores that keeps you inspired. Trader Joes has all these unique little things too that I love. Their painted signs are all unique to that store, they have a lobster in every store and they move this stuffed dog around the store for the kids to get a prize (admittedly, I look for it too!). Their prices too I have found to be actually quite stellar and most times beat the big chain competitors on produce and spices. Their canned food and meat are comparable, but when looking at conventional to conventional and organic to organic, trader joes tends to beat the chains more times out of the bunch. Their produce does rotate based off of what is in season, so sometimes you struggle to find red bell peppers, or blueberries, but its good to know that its because they are out of season, so it forces you to really stick to what is in season. read more

This is the first Trader Joe's I discovered about 10 years ago. They have the worst parking lot imaginable. Good Luck if you have a suburban or huge pick up. Since I gave up sugar, I buy less. Some of my previous and current favorites are: their ketchup. Its not as vinegary as Heinz and has a bit of barbecue. Orange Chicken good. Japanese Fried Rice with edame yum. Braided Mozzarella Cheese yum. I used to like their granola and cereal when I ate more sugar. I like the pick your own beer bottles. I found some local brewery ones here. I don't live close enough (or apparently love TJs enough) to regularly shop here (because I know city folks who do). So the first day that I went, it was pouring. Like the hardest it's ever rained here. Which was unpleasant parking wise, but got everyone to smile at each other like "wow, this is so wild that we're all wet and in a grocery store". More on that later. What I like at Trader Joes is firstly the samples - way better then most grocery stores (except maybe Lunds). I also love the chocolate covered pretzels, which used to be the motivation for going when I lived on the west coast. I really appreciate their wine bottles of maple syrup (delicious and cheap!) Otherwise, I don't really like how I buy so much prepared food when I shop here, so I don't, really. But I want to! So I'm glad it's there, in case I have a moment of weakness, and also for the wine shop. The wine shop is the real reason why I give Trader Joes 4 stars. And that's mostly because it looks like a cartoon. Maybe it's the why the wine is displayed - I'm not sure. But it's like if Sesame Street went to the wine shop. Most of their cheap wine is drinkable, the white more so than the red...but I do love trying the unfamiliar labels to see what I'll get. I started shopping at trader joes in San Diego 25 years ago. Then they opened a store in Richmond VA where we lived until 2000, and another in McLean VA. 2-3 years ago trader joes SUDDENLY changed. Prices for all their nuts and dried fruit went WAY up. Packaging for these and all vegetables fruits shrunk substantially. I ran into a lot of problems with their fresh meat and pork -- old many times spoiled. Their milk was not cold enough, and there were a few years this store (before they made the aisles wider) was very poorly maintained . They also changed their product mix and eliminated many items that we had grown to love. Now with the substantially reduced size in overall packaging I just now visit only for pre christmas items. (I find the best value and flavor for dried nuts fruit and especially fresh excellent spices at GOOD prices are found at our many food co-ops.) Their many years of once outstanding flavor, unique products AND excellent value I feel are now gone. read more

$4 Italian wines are one of my favorite items to purchase here; they taste just as good, if not better than the $8 - $9 bottles of more well known brands. I will only buy my wine here now. This is a winaholic's dream! Hit up their store in Maple Grove. It's newer and much bigger. You won't be disappointed! The prices and quality of many items are better than Cub and Rainbow. I always buy the guacamole, hummus, chips, and gourmet package meals that you can just heat in the microwave or pan fry. I went into Trader Joe's after a softball game for some wine as a thank you to a neighbor watching our house on vacation and I picked up a few good wines for $3.99. Whenever my wife and I come here we always find really cool new foods that are cheap and the employees are always super cool. They have lots of organic foods and samples. I made a pilgrimage to get all the things in MN that I can't get in IA and Trader Joes's was at the top for my $2 chuck...bought a whole case and will likely dole out for a few x-mas or new year's gifts. Overall, I dig TJ's. THINGS THAT ROCK: -I don't know if any grocery store can rival Trader Joe's selection of tasty and affordable frozen goods. I'm not sure how much money I've dropped on the pork dumplings, s'more ice cream sandwiches, and fruit bars, but it's a lot! #guiltypleasures -Love the variety of bread products. The first challah I ever ate was from TJs, and it's still delicious as ever. Can't really go wrong with any of them. -Even though 90% of Asian folks are allergic to milk -including me- I can't help myself from indulging in TJ's dairy products. I believe the stomachaches are well worth it. -Since I'm on the topic of dairy, THE CHEESE SELECTION IS THE BUSINESS! Seriously, many of them would be double at other grocery stores. So good! #manchego4life -$3 to $20 wines that taste amazing? Enough said. NOT THE BEST: -The fruits and vegetables offered aren't not enough and can taste kind of bleh. I do like the Cuties, though. -Yes, $10 beef tenderloins rock, but the pork products are lacking. -Personally, I can't stomach the chaos that occurs in the parking lot.
