I feel so fortunate to live near the Seward co-op. I shop here weekly and love their large selection of organic and locally grown produce and meat. They have a nice ready made meal selection including various fresh soups and salads. While prices can be a bit higher, there are always rotating sales on produce as well as field day organic brand products which are often cheaper. read more

Forced on a majority black community, the coop did not keep its promise to the community leaders that were against its opening. (know i see why all the protesting) Sold out and made finale by the money the coop paid A.G. Keith Elison. Before the year was up, the coop fired all the black managing employees, price on food/ snacks set purposely too high for a low-income neighborhood, which was a long-standing complaint from the community on them staying there. This coop is not a friend; it's another devilish trick implemented to pushed low-income renters and homeowners out of their neighborhood and has now changed the dynamics and cost of living of the south side black community forever. Please start selling more meat/protein in the hot food bar again. You used to put out at least two different meat options, usually a chicken and then something with turkey, beef, etc. There were meatballs, enchiladas, lasagnas...all sorts of great things. For months on end, it has only been the same bland baked chicken. Especially frustrating on days like today when you don't put out any of the chicken wild rice soup, and the chicken verde soup was gone by the time I got there. Not everybody is a vegetarian, many, many, many of us eat and enjoy meat and it is frustrating that your hot food options are so bereft of meat. It's pretty much the only reason I go there, is to get lunch, and it is always the same. darn. chicken. EVERY TIME! You used to have more meat options...what happened??? read more

My partner and I are co-op members. We love having a place close to get fresh food. One of the greatest things about the co-op are the low egg prices (and they're local!), which might be surprising since prices at co-ops can be a little more expensive. The produce we get is always top notch. We also love getting meat from the meat counter because it's local and the staff are always helpful and knowledgeable. Overall, the co-op strives to be engaged in the community. They do a "round up" to the nearest dollar donation for different neighborhood organizations each month. I appreciate having a grocery store I can walk to. The only downside is that some of your typical Target or Cub Foods brands can't be found, but lots of locally made alternatives can! read more

I go to the Seward Co-op several times a week to pick up whatever I have a craving for or need that day. The selection is really the best of the best and the ambiance friendly and inviting. I always feel welcome and valued. And people like Cole who go above and beyond every time and makes me just laugh with his fun and unique humor... This is an inspiring location and ranks up there now as one of my favorite co-ops (you'll probably catch that on a number of my co-op reviews...I LOVE THEM)! I've been to this one twice and absolutely adored the vibe, the presence, and the happy/helpful/energetic employees that work there! This is an incredibly diverse and inviting location that just makes you want to come back over and over again to support and watch it succeed! The selection is great, the people are great, and the prices (or at least in the produce) seem to be a bit more affordable than some of the other co-ops (the packaged-processed goods are about the same as other locations). The meat & seafood department may just be the happiest meat & seafood department I've ever encountered. Kind, informative, and generous. While it MAY have something to do with being so new, so many of the employees really go out of their way to be helpful and nice. But I had also been to the Lakewinds-Richfield opening season multiple times and, while great, the Seward Friendship store seems to be living out their name and investing in great friendships. I had talked to a man at the customer service desk when they were 1 1/2 weeks into their opening and he said that they had a goal of selling approximately 90 memberships in their first month...BUT...they had already sold OVER 500 in their first 1 1/2 weeks! The support for co-ops is inspiring and such a huge testament to the fact that we are STARVING for nutrient-dense REAL foods! Just go to walk around and experience the cheeriness (& buy something that you've never tried before...they've got a fantastic variety and supply of the goods)! I really like this coop. If I had one thing they could improve on it would be the BLUE CHEESE DRESSING at the salad bar. I'm pretty sure it's thinner than water - YUK and they don't sell blue cheese dressing, so buying our own wasn't an option. The ranch is equally as watered down, but luckily the good stuff is for sale on the shelves. Seward is a great grocery store, and probably the first co-op I've ever shopped at that I didn't find annoying. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, and even specialty items aren't too bad. (Some of the bulk items are a bit pricey.) There's a lot of store here in a small space, and I can buy almost everything I need here. The produce and meat sections are small, but always seem to have what I'm looking for. Same goes for dry goods. The service here is friendly to the extreme, even by Minnesota standards. So many workers here smiled at me and my wife that he we had to buy a membership. It's like we didn't have a choice. read more

Apparently the Co-Op designation only means that they charge you way more than normal for everything. I thought that Co-Op was a way to purchase in a group making items less expensive, not so at Seward. Also if u want to round up, the cashiers will surely offer you that opportunity. Why not give them a additional 10-90% every time you buy something? It's not like any of us donate to good causes in any other anyway. Friendship store, more like screwing everyone over store. I am here at least once every weekend. A perfect place for a quick groceries and some hot food . Their hot bar is really really good with great options . I usually get a plate for around $10 . If you live around South Minneapolis I strongly recommend it . It's a cooperative so that's a great way to support the local community and for those in need read more

This is a really nice store. The space is smaller, and they don't try to cram in too much. There is room to move and think, which I appreciate as shopping with compromised critical thinking skills is not very fun. The bulk section is well organized and spacious enough to move around in. There is a broad variety of sauces and spice mixes that make throwing together dinner very easy. This is honestly a balm to the soul after struggling at the Wedge, a space that knows its market and is not trying to be something it's not. Also, lots and LOTS of frozen veggies. read more

I've been a member of the Seward Co-op for about two years. It's typically a bit expensive, but if you shop the deals, it's quite alright. And, there are definitely certain items that are worth paying a bit extra. The sausages from the meat department are the best in Minneapolis, IMO. The Lamb Merguez and loose breakfast sausage are fantastic. They also have lesser-used cuts like fresh lamb kidney and liver which is hard to find. If I'm making chicken Seward is my go-to as well with Thanksgiving Day turkey. The beef all looks great, but it's expensive and I fear I'll fuck it up. I usually go down the street to Everett's for beef and pork. (Finer Meats is good too, if you are in a pinch) The produce is expensive but it's all local. Also some very hard to find treats like fiddle-heads and a rotating selection of great peppers. A good fresh mushroom selection is nice. The bulk section has everything from coffee to steel cut oats to a large fresh spice collection. And, shit you not, the hot food bar for breakfast is really good! The biscuits and gravy is seriously some of the best I've had and a trustworthy hung-over to work must stop. read more

Food selection is decent, but the staff are awful! This was their third strike and I will never return. When checking out, the cashier gives you dirty looks and are rude if you don't follow very specific protocols. For example, they yell at you for placing the basket on the conveyer belt. When you try to hand them the basket, they become smug and say "I don't do that." So, they literally stand there and watch you empty the basket! Then, when checked out, they just stand there and look at you until you realize that, again, they won't help pack your groceries either! So, they literally stand there doing nothing while you pack everything up! It's a horrible experience. read more

I'm in love with my local co-op. The staff is incredibly friendly, and I signed up to be an owner almost immediately upon moving to the Powderhorn neighborhood. This store may be smaller, but I rarely have trouble finding everything I need. The vegan chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting is a regular pick-up - one of my favorite vegan desserts of all time. The store is clean, bright, and well-stocked with everything you need to create a healthy meal at home. They also have great to-go options (hot and cold) if you need something on the run or don't have time to cook. I thought I'd spend a lot more time at Whole Foods when I moved to the Twin Cities, but I honestly prefer Seward to any big box store. read more

I wanted to love this store, but unfortunately it fails on mulitiple levels, primarily it's water logged, often less than fresh, produce. Many co-ops offer non orgainic items so lower income shoppers have more affordable options, but the friendship store seems to be sticking to it's organic guns even on produce that has been determined not to retain high levels of pesiticides. If a co-op is trying to retain an ethical stance, i wish they'd do so by not selling meat and fish instead of protecting me from my own financial choices. Also wish they'd be more respectful of the environment by not keeping the store so cold in the summer. On the positive side, most of the staff are friendly and helpful. While the exterior of the store is a blight on an already unattractive city-scape, the interior is pleasant and well designed. read more

I cannot say enough how friendly the staff is at Seward Co-Op. I've only had positive experiences here, so much so that I became a member because of it! I'm happy to support this co-op in particular. This is my co-op now. I love how close it is and the space is very reminiscent of the founding store, Seward co-op: same happy green color. The prices are about the same too. Many items, especially bulk, are affordable but of course they have lots of expensive fun stuff to save your pennies for. The hot bar is, like Seward, a little spendy. I would recommend getting the rotisserie chicken instead, and save the bones for broth! read more

Great place to stop for lunch or coffee - I do so on a regular basis as one of my work locations is across the street. Excellent salad and hot food bar with a wide range of healthy choices. At its core this is an outstanding grocery store with the best of produce and very good choices throughout the store. I also like the selection of personal care products, such as Tom's of Maine toothpaste. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Very nice area to sit with your meal or coffee. While I don't need to park my car, I am pleased to see that there is a reasonably large parking lot, which keeps customers from needing to park on side streets. read more
