I've been having a harder time finding good meat at the grocery store these days (if they have what I'm looking for at all), so I went here just because it was the first that came up. I'm glad I did! I was greeted immediately by a smiling friendly woman and she got me exactly what I needed and sent me on my way. I was in and out in probably 2 minutes. Highly recommend. read more

As I entered, there was a customer inside who had already paid & was preparing to leave telling the owners he doesn't go anywhere else, but to their location. He prepared himself to leave so that I may get assistance. I'm thinking what a wonderful way to start a review. Finer Meats is located right off the intersection of 38th/Nicollet Ave. They're two stores down from Nighthawk's. They have a real fine history. Doug, who is the current owner, is also the grandson of the original owner. He shared how his grandfather became the owner & how this quaint shop, with it's loyal patrons, are still standing after all of these years. You have to stop by to hear this story & to hear how many years they will be celebrating soon! I had a wonderful time chatting with the two ppl there. I didn't buy anything today, but plan to Monday. I have my eyes on some Turkey Tom wings for Thanksgiving. The young lady I chatted with was also quite friendly & shared info on different meats. I think I may shop here going forward for my meats. They offer meat packages in different poundage. There are also a lot cheese options. I didn't get a photo of their selection of smoked meats, but they have an entire case of smoked meats: hammocks, turkey legs & wings, and so much more. Parking may be a merry-go-round, I don't believe they have a lot. However, if you're on the bus, you may catch the 18 or any other Nicollet Ave bus that reaches 38th. Lamb Bacon. That's all you need to know. Finer Meats had been a Nicollet mainstay for over 20 years and has solid, reputable meats and prices. I used to go here every weekend when I lived in the neighborhood but I still make the trek back for special occasions or cabin weekends. They are always willing to slice meats how you request and have great deals on grilling packs. I highly recommend visiting, even once. read more

If I could give six stars I would! Stopped for a beer at Venn and ordered a pulled pork sandwich to share. Would have been happier with 2, they were so good! The owners / operators were lovely as well. Next stop - the Finer Meats butcher shop! My guess is that I will not be disappointed. read more

We contracted Finer Meats Food Truck for my husband's Celebration of Life at Minnewashta Regional Park. We could not have been happier. We had a HUGE selection of meats from hot dogs to brisket. We had just finished a wonderful dinner over at Kyatchi and wandered over to check out The Finer Meat Company. Bam! Took me right back to the Brothersons meat market that was around the block from where I grew up, over on 36th and Bryant ave so. It is now GiGi's cafe. The smell brought me right back to my mom bringing me and twin brother to shop. We told Brian that it was the first time we had stopped in, his answer was to give each of us a beef stick. Wow! Moist, flavorful, nice spice, and smelled wonderful. And it tasted just as great, even the next day. I can't wait to start grilling and explore there selection of meats. Thanks Brian! read more

This place has some work to do. I went in first thing on a Saturday morning with my wife to prepare for a bbq. I was intently focused on the meats while my wife looked around. She noticed some things I didn't. Pros Good prices Decent quality meat Locally owned Cons Very dirty - streaks running down the interior of the meat cases No sense of proper food handling - I ordered some boneless chicken thighs. The guy working just stuck his bare hand deep into the chicken juices and prepared my order. He packed my bag then used the calculator, touched my credit card, the pen and everything else without washing his hand. This place must be covered in meat juice. Lax customer service with little knowledge - I was grinding my own burgers and trying to talk to the guy behind the counter but he seemed tired or high or something and completely disinterested in talking with me. Overall, I really want to like this place but while other places may be more expensive, they know how to clean and act interested in their customers and I will pay slightly more for those things. I will probably visit this place again to see if anything we experienced was just an anomaly. The mess we saw was not something that happened overnight so my guess is that cleaning and food safety are not high priorities here daily so this problem will continue. Finer Meats employee : 'Can I help you?' Me: 'What year is it? I saw pterodactyl outside when I entered... now it is gone.' I went in at 2pm on Friday and there was only one other customer in the place. ( There were two employees on duty.) The customer bought one package of sliced meat. It took 10 minutes to complete this one transaction: the employee stopped working whenever the chit-chatting became especially engrossing to him. I made very serious eye contact with the second employee but she was too focused with washing a pan to help me. ( Open letter to Finer Meats employees: I have seen doctors talk while doing surgery and they kept their hands moving; surely you can weigh meat slices and keep working while talking to customers? ) The selection and quality of the meat items at the store seemed nice just go there knowing the level, energy level specifically, of the employees there. read more

Good products, but this establishment is unsafe and irresponsible in regards to the current pandemic. No employees were wearing masks when I (attempted) to go in. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. I will not be coming here until this is rectified and neither should anyone else. read more

Fine Meat Co is a delightful surprise. We were finishing up dinner at Kyatchi - another Kingfield gem - when we noticed the butcher shop across the street was still open. Visiting small meat shops is kind of a hobby for us, so in we went. Brian, the owner, was super nice. When he heard we hadn't been in before, we got a "First Timer's Treat," which was a stick of the house-made beef sticks. I was full but Sam thought it was delicious. I would agree, when I had it for breakfast the next morning. It was meaty and savory and slightly spicy. Very salty, so it would pair nicely with a beer or in a Bloody Mary. Their bacon is pretty great if you love thick-cut bacon. I was surprised that it didn't render out much fat when I cooked it. Again, very salty and chewy. Great on its own or in sandwiches. There's a Russian sausage that is full of different spices and herbs but the most prominent herb is dill. It's a fragrant link that doesn't need much aid in the way of condiments. Prices are reasonable, and Brian is chatty and knowledgeable. I often just cook with chicken thighs and breasts because it's hard to fuck them up, but Finer Meat Co might just help me branch out my repertoire. read more

Today I went into to Finer Meats to buy some smoked turkey. They are a great source for smoked meats but I won't be going back. I was shocked by the sign on their door that they would not be asking customers to wear a mask, and that I would need to ask them to put a mask on if it would make me feel more comfortable. Indeed there were several people behind the counter, none with masks on. Not sure what their message was supposed to be but to me it speaks volumes about their attitude toward their customers and about themselves. I told them how I felt and that I wouldn't be back, but wanted to alert other shoppers who might still be concerned about COVID. Disappointing! read more

Review of their HOTDOG served from their food stand stationed across the street from their retail store during the 9/20/15 Open Streets event in Mpls. A young man behind the food stand window noticed me looking at their sign and summoned me with "You DO want a hotdog, don't you?" Yes, I did, especially after asking about the hotdog combinations being offered at the food stand next door (none sounding all that great at the time). Plus, the hotdogs being offered were (only) $4! Turned out, the hotdogs were ready-made and wrapped in paper. We each got one and helped ourselves to the squeeze bottles of Heinz Ketchup, French's Yellow Mustard, and packets of Heinz pickle relish. That first bite of my adorned hotdog was a SNAP! Yes, a "snappy" hotdog! And what great flavor in a perfectly soft, white bun. Yummy! read more

I'll gave this place five stars, fuck it. It's the best damn small butcher I've been to in the area. I usually hit up this place when I'm buying beef brisket to bring up north to the smoker. I called around once and Finer was the only place that had it. Check out their smoked section in the back. Its all done in-house. The bacon is amazing and the turkey wings look great. They have a great home made brat selection. Original, cajun, pineapple, cranberry bacon....and gaddamn gummy bear!?!!?? Supposedly, it was requested so they made a batch. Top Line: Good prices, but not appetitizing atmosphere. From the outside, it looks like a quaint, hipster butcher shop. Walking in, you can see that this place has been around for a while. The Est. in 1935 sign is not the first clue. The dingy walls, old refrigeration equipment, and worn down store give away its age in just a glimpse. We purchased some stuff for a dinner party and were praying that we wouldn't get sick from poisoning. Or from the worker who had been blowing his nose out front. He did *rinse* off his hands before touching our steak with his fingers. On the plus side, the workers were helpful. They offered a free beef stick -- offer for new customers. I'd love to be able to come back but until it feels sanitary, I don't think I will be back. read more

I dropped by Finer Meat Co recently in search of a butcher shop which would justify an extra trip in addition to my weekly shopping expedition to Lunds & Byerlys. I don't think I have found it yet. I am looking for a place where I can find liver, kidneys, chicken gizzards, etc. Weird stuff which I like but which seems impossible to find here in the Twin Cities. In any case the welcome at Finer was overwhelmingly friendly. I could tell I wasn't going to leave and disappoint the nice lady by not buying something. The displays of the meat and poultry offerings could be improved. A lot of food shopping is based on visual appearance and their displays didn't inspire me. Prices seemed much lower than I am used to so I wondered about quality but I bought a hanger steak and it was great- very flavorful. BTW I haven't ever seen hanger steak at my super market. If I were in the area I would return to Finer Meat as I like to support small businesses; however, I don't see it as part of my weekly rotation as Coastal Seafood has become. read more

It is getting harder and harder to find a butcher shop these days. Finer Meats on Nicollet has been serving the community for many years now. It isn't the prettiest store you will walk into, but they can get you basically anything you need when it comes to buying meat. I typically stop in when I am getting ready for a BBQ. I have ordered St. Louis style spare ribs, baby back ribs, whole chickens, pork butts, whole briskets and even whole slabs of beef ribs. Slabs of beef ribs can be very hard to find these days -- especially ones with some meat left on them; but Finer Meats always has them. If you are placing a big order it is always a good idea to call a few days ahead so they can make sure they have what you are looking for on hand. And don't be afraid to ask them to do some of the prep work for you (e.g. take the membrane off the slabs of ribs) as they are more than happy to do so. I should also mention that they have really good prices and parking on the street there is easy Finally, make sure you introduce yourself to Mr. Finer when you stop in and get to know him. read more

We were looking for a meat market in the area and I decided to give Finer Meat a try, partly because it has such a delightful name. Finer Meat definitely delivers on good meat nicely done at good prices. My only disappointment has been selection: they tend to carry mostly mainstream cuts. I stopped in once looking for a flatiron steak and called another time asking about a flank steak. In both cases they said they did not or would not do those cuts. read more

This is a very quaint and authentic butcher shop. Everything I've ever purchased there was fabulous. My favorite is the spicy beef jerky. Oh. My. God. The selection of offerings varies daily but, in true old-school fashion, the staff can guide your purchase or just let you know when what you want will be available. They also have big old raw cow bones for your big old dog. And the have a smoked pig skin that's 1000x cheaper than the pig ears at the pet store. Like 15 cents for a big piece. And, that goes for everyone who has ever helped me from the owners, and all of their employees who are like family to them. And then, to the products which are fantastic: sausages in creative, delicious flavors, steak, jerky, lamb bacon, and on and on... custom cut dog bones. I absolutely love this butcher! It is family owned. Everyone there is really friendly and helpful. I was amazed by how affordable it is for such high quality meats. They dry age their meats which makes the flavor amazing. Try the delmonico steak. It's so flavorful. Their bacon is heavenly. It is smokey and lean. It's the best bacon I've ever had and I'm pretty snooty about my bacon. I recommend this to everybody. read more

Great spot. As other reviewers have noted, not the prettiest place in the world, and definitely has an old school feel. Read: lots of linoleum and fluorescent light--this is not the Whole Foods meat counter. However, you will find great service, many hard to find items (pig feet! pig neck! oxtail!) along with the standards, and totally reasonable prices. If you're in the neighborhood, this family-owned spot should be your butcher shop. read more

This place is a treasure. I had them do some custom rib roasts for me for Christamas, and they were perfect. Don't overlook the wide selection of smoked pig parts. I love the neckbones for bean soup. Don't necessarily count on them having a big supply of ribeyes or other expensive steaks on hand, though. It's not a high-income neighborhood. But be sure to ask, because they may have something in the back that isn't cut up and displayed yet. A little advance notice and they can get you anything, though. And at a good price. read more
