It's so nice to finally have this location open. I no longer have to make trips out to Moorpark, stop in at the Fresno location when visiting family, or visit The Wharf and pay for the pellet bedding I buy for my rabbits. This location is HUGE! There is a section that is wide open that you can see leads to their storage area. I like that this location has lit up boards telling you what section you are in. Precious locations were kind of mess in that way. I got what I wanted and briefly looked over the store. The small animal section (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamster) is really lacking. There was like 4 chew toys available which rabbits can't even had some of them and the small animal bagged hay selection was minimal ( although I don't even buy bagged hay) but it's nice to have options of I was in a pinch.

Finally, an REI version of ranching and farming equipment store! Came in to check it out over the weekend and was not disappointed. Plenty of everything for the home garden, to a large working ranch. Need a new tractor? They've got it! Tools, gear, feed, mulch, seeds...they have everything, heck, even a new pair of work boots and work shirt! Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.

It's so strange having the old Toys R Us building in use again. I grew up going to that place. You walk in and remember the coin machines and rides, now replaced with farming supplies. The location has new life and I'm glad to see farmers and livestock enthusiasts have a new place to go. Hopefully, this means the stores that have been closed in the area will get populated again. There's broken windows in some of them. Sad to see. I run a guinea pig rescue and sanctuary, and I was disappointed in their selection unfortunately. I hope they remove the junk food for small animals and replace with Oxbow. Hamsters and guinea pigs should never have salt licks, treats with honey or seeds, or soy/wheat as the main ingredient. The cages aren't good either. Either get one midwest habitat per guinea pig, or build a C&C. No pet store cages or hutches. At least their wood shavings are kiln dried and they have Oxbow hay. Please add larger bales and prioritize Oxbow treats and pellets. I did find Ivermectin though, which is great.

During my most recent getaway trip to Ventura, I made two visits.....the first visit, I found a woven straw fedora-trilby, the Circa 1921, to top off an olive-green Hawaiian shirt I purchased from a different store just a short time earlier. The second visit, I got a pecan-brown Scala Outback Hat. Both Amberlee and Jenny were such a great help; they are real assets to your store. Thank you, Amberlee, Jenny and the Wharf!!! When I entered, the young lady at the registered welcomed me. I couldn't find the bag I was looking for because I didn't know what the bag looked like since it's a different brand than I am used to. I asked a young man that was loading shelves and he called for someone to come help me. Another gentleman came and helped me within a minute. They did have quite a large Oxbow small animal pet products more than I have seen at Tractor Supply. So, even though I probably won't be back for these pellet bedding bags when TSS opens; I would come back for all the rabbit chew toys and supplies they have. I was checked out quickly and on my way.

Cross posting this review, but it is an important message to share…read more Golden State Hay recently moved and with the move has new ownership. From what I understand, a wonderful large family with many children owned it previously, and now transferred ownership. I had a horrible experience there this morning, when I went to buy materials for our 4H lamb. I have a 5 month old newborn, and also two young boys (3 and 2) and I asked if they had a chair anywhere in the shop to nurse my baby. I was told they would get me one in the back, and I waited 5 minutes so decided to sit on a bucket and nurse, which was discretely done so under my sweater. The female owner came out and told me to nurse in my car, and I told her no, seeing that my baby was currently nursing. As I was checking out, she said "In the future you cannot nurse in her. This is about common decency, and protecting the innocence of children, and you made my husband uncomfortable and he had to leave". I told her if I hadn't told her I was nursing, she wouldn't have even known, that is how discreet I was and modest I was, and she said it did not matter, that it was about "protection of innocence." I have truly never had a worse experience in a shop, and have never been treated this way in my 12 years as a mother. Again, my baby is a newborn, and I was discreetly nursing her under a sweater. I sadly cannot support a shop who does not support mothers and families, and who makes their customers feel shameful for feeding their newborn babies.

So I didn't come back for a while. Now I come here when my regular store doesn't have good Orchard hay. Ojai Valley Feed usually does. I've gotten good hay from them, though their hay is on a dirt lot so last time it was dragged across dirt before going into my truck. Maybe doesn't matter if you're tossing it for cattle or horses? But I'm feeding guinea pigs so I'd rather it not be dusty. I get it though, it's a feed store. I guess that's just the reason they're not my #1 go to for the hay and rather my #2. Prices are fair for the area. I like the guy who seems to own/run the place. He's super nice. The younger employees are fine but not enthusiastic. One time I visited and it was only the younger folks taking care of the store. I inquired about the fresh chicken eggs I'd seen here on Yelp and I was told pretty flatly that "Oh, you have to be on a list," and that was that. I felt totally shut down and felt the employee missed an opportunity to engage me as a customer, maybe ask if I wanted to be on the list, or tell me what the process to get on the list was (is there a time they expect to add new names to the list??) That's the only downside. Shop is small, but I was also super happy to see they sell feeder animals like crickets, mice and rats. I had just paid for a $60 purchase and realized I really needed 2 crickets. The shopkeeper gave them to me no charge. I know they're cheap but he didn't have to do that and I really appreciated it!
