This pet store is the heart of Ojai. The family owners truly care, and it shows in everything they do. The employees are incredibly helpful and genuinely knowledgeable about all kinds of pets--you can ask real questions and get real answers. We've purchased birds, lizards, and all of our dog food here, and the care is always top-notch. It feels like a family experience every time you walk in. TLDR; this place profits off of living animals that are actively hurting each other due to too small cages! See photos I never leave yelp reviews but I was completely disgusted about the welfare of the animals being kept in this store. They have WAY too many chickens being kept in tiny cages. I noticed some of the chickens pecking on one particular chicken's back / rear. Then I noticed blood on the chickens beaks and looked closer and the poor chicken is bleeding all over and is basically being eaten by the other chickens. I let the person behind the counter know and she looked horrified. I told her I think there are way too many chickens in the cage to which she agreed. She promptly removed the chicken and another employee told her to put the chicken in another cage that had a single chicken. I asked if they had anything to apply to the wounds and the guy looked confused and said yeah and disappeared to the back. I once again noticed the other chicken start pecking at the chickens bloody rear and told the guy once he came back that it should be by itself. He moved the chicken and sprayed something on its wound. I wish I could've taken the chicken but I don't have the means or space. To the owners - you absolutely shouldn't be selling chickens / other live animals. You clearly don't have the space / enclosures needed to house that many chickens and you clearly don't care about the animals you're selling. Your employees seem to have a lack of knowledge on animal care and should be trained to know what to do to care of injured animals. This is clearly an animals-for-profit type of pet store that anyone who loves animals should absolutely avoid. I usually avoid this place because the birds already sadden me, and I've heard of the poor care given to the live animals. I'll absolutely never return and I really hope the owners think hard about keeping these living animals. At the very least, keep a smaller amount. It doesn't seem like they're even selling much of these animals. It's just cruel. I'd like to know what happens with their chickens once they're too large for these tiny cages! read more

I rarely write bad reviews but here it goes. We have been shopping and supporting this pet store for almost 10 years now; we like to support and shop locally . To be fair Pets & More has an extensive selection but they're a bit pricey... it's the customer care which is very upsetting; I purchased an actual deer antler from the MGR. after explaining to her that I needed Something literally indestructible due to my bull terrier being able to gnaw thru anything, including Kongs. I purchased it for a little over $20.00. Within a few days my dog shattered it and pieces of it pierced her mouth, causing injury. I returned it and didn't ask for a refund, only a store credit. I actually needed to come in 3 separate times because the manager was either too busy or wasn't there. I left my name and contact information but never received a callback; after finally tracking down the manager, she dismissively informs me that I would need to send an email to the company in order to receive a refund. I explained to her that I didn't want a refund and that she should just issue me a store credit since I shop there so frequently and have spent thousands over the years (I belong to 2 different frequent buyer programs) but she refused and said that she would contact the manufacturer and get back to me...this has now been about a month and have heard nothing. So, now they've lost a loyal customer who is just ordering through Chewy for less money and way more convenience. Very disappointed! read more

I am a reptile keeper, I have multiple lizards and a ball python. I often shop here for insects & feeder mice for my snake. Recently, my snake has been rejecting food. Due to this, I am often left with a live feeder mouse that I have nothing to do with other than let die. After purchasing a feeder mouse last week, which was rejected by my snake, I decided to take the mouse back to the pet store in hopes that someone else's pet could enjoy it, rather than me just keeping it until it dies, the lady at the front desk (an older, thin lady) cracked a little smile when I explained my situation to her and told me that they don't normally accept returns or do exchanges but she would give her manager (kelsie?) a call to see what they could do. The manager understood my situation and allowed me to exchange the feeder mouse for a few crickets. Yesterday, I purchased another feeder mouse and attempted to feed my snake, he rejected the mouse once again, so I took the mouse back to pets and more where I was greeted by a tall Hispanic man who seemed to understand the situation, he told me he needed to ask his manager, a heavier Hispanic woman, as she approached the counter i waved, smiled and said "hi!", she didn't even acknowledge me and just said, "no. We don't do that" and walked away. I found this to be very rude and unwelcoming. I will not be shopping here anymore due to this poor customer service and unclear rules that don't make sense. Now I am left with a live mouse who will just sit in the box until he dies because pets and more didn't want to take him back for someone else's pet to enjoy. What a waste. read more

If you know what you are looking for this place is great! Found some fun stuff for my cat. A reminder to anyone reading reviews: this is a SMALL town pet store. Logically they most likely will not have every single thing you are looking for because that makes no sense to stock something that 1 person a year comes in for. Have grace on small business owners. The last 4 times I've been in there, the chicks have no food. They are crammed in a tub way too small for them. And the shavings are filthy and smelly. I tried to return a harness that I purchased a week earlier that I a had the receipt for, but the only hang tag was thrown away. They refused to exchange for a smaller size. The harness was brand new, never worn and clean. Also, a year ago, I purchased a cockatiel ONLY to get it out of there bc she had A wing that was hanging down. The owner told me a few days earlier that he would take her to a vet, but that her wing was like that bc she was young. He never took her to the vet. When I went to rescue her, the older lady that works there was trying to catch this poor terrified bird, that couldn't fly well, with a net. She could've easily been scooped up in a paper towel. She could've also caused more trauma to her wing. I took her the the vet where it was discovered that she probably had an old injury that didn't heal correctly. The store has a great selection of supplies, and is usually clean. Most of the staff are nice, but don't seem knowledgeable about animal care. Especially the lady mentioned in the earlier portion of my review. read more

This is Ventura Hay's new pet store on the edge of Ojai. I was happy to see they're going to carry large (feed store) size bags of food, shavings etc. as well as smaller items for typical pet households. On one of the first days after opening I visited and found they had a few cages with finches, doves and parakeets for sale. Otherwise they didn't have live animals yet. I overheard the woman behind the counter telling another customer that they were going to add a live fish section soon. Staff is friendly and the store is big and clean. Large inventory and many options for your pets. But it's Feb 2021. They had someone behind the counter straight up not wearing a mask. Just brazenly hanging out with no mask. Other employees has masks hanging down well below their noses. As I was shopping they were also loudly discussing politics and how the world has gone to crap. read more

Very disappointed on how this "manager"/"owner " took care of the previously review of a child and her fish. As a former customer service rep/manager, customer satisfaction costs nothing but a better reputation as a business. I don't have an allegiance to any one pet store, I generally use the one best stocked for the need as well as location, that is COVID sensitive. My dog was in need of a bath and I'd seen the two dog-wash stations in here on an earlier visit so I popped in. I saw no indication of the non-masking mentioned in other posts and the staff were quite helpful. I accept the other folks who posted poor reviews may indeed have had a negative experience, but mine was great, 5 stars. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. I have supported this business since it opened a few years ago. Two weeks ago I adopted a baby pig from this place which then gave us a microscopic parasite we still cannot identify. The owner of the pet shop refuses to take responsibility and says the condition of the animals is not her problem. In that case, it seems money is her problem since she has no problem making a quick buck off animals and their poor health. I tried to get my 2 CHILDREN under the age of two a pet pig but instead they got a SEVERE RASH. I can't imagine what condition the other animals are in and how else the owner of this place is taking advantage of customers. Watchers will forever be our go to place for animals/animal supplies. Good job pets and more for loosing a loyal customer because you wanted to make some money before the holidays at other people's expenses. read more

Purchased $20 harness in Small for new puppy, but got home and realized we needed the Medium. Immediately drove back to store, with the receipt and the undamaged and re-attachable tag we had removed. Store manager refused to exchange for a Medium because the store had no tag gun to reattach the tag (seriously? $14.99 on Amazon btw). So, zero future business from me here, I'll drive to Ventura thanks to lousy customer service and store's lack of a $15 tag gun. read more

I went into the store. I was helping out a friend with their cats and I purchase my pet supplies there. They have my dogs favorite chews. I am a local homeowner. And I went to write a check. The first time I went they did not ask me for my ID. The second time I had to go back since they were so close. I wrote another check. The girl behind the counter asked me for my ID. I could not find it. My bad. The girl made me feel so bad about not having my ID. She said well I hope that check clears. I'm nervous I'm looking through my purse for my ID and I can't find it anywhere. I was so taken back, it really was in my purse. The check cleared no problem. I am now buying my stuff on Amazon due to the fact no one ever needs to be treated like this. I received my dog chews from Amazon. Much better price and service. read more

This is my usual place to buy pet supplies.. Today I went in and happened to walk by the rats in the back. I understand that many people don't like rats, but either way they are still a living creature that deserves care and respect. When I saw the rats, their cage was small and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. The worst part is they had no food or water. When I mentioned this to the owner she shrugged and said, "well they are only feeder rats" as if that made it okay to neglect them. I will not be shopping here again. read more
