The employees are incredibly helpful and genuinely knowledgeable about all kinds of pets--you can ask real questions and get real answers. We've purchased birds, lizards, and all of our dog food here, and the care is always top-notch. It feels like a family experience every time you walk in. Small-town vibes, honest people, and way better than supporting big corporate pet stores.

See photos I never leave yelp reviews but I was completely disgusted about the welfare of the animals being kept in this store. They have WAY too many chickens being kept in tiny cages. I noticed some of the chickens pecking on one particular chicken's back / rear. Then I noticed blood on the chickens beaks and looked closer and the poor chicken is bleeding all over and is basically being eaten by the other chickens. I let the person behind the counter know and she looked horrified. I told her I think there are way too many chickens in the cage to which she agreed. She promptly removed the chicken and another employee told her to put the chicken in another cage that had a single chicken. I asked if they had anything to apply to the wounds and the guy looked confused and said yeah and disappeared to the back. I once again noticed the other chicken start pecking at the chickens bloody rear and told the guy once he came back that it should be by itself. He moved the chicken and sprayed something on its wound. I wish I could've taken the chicken but I don't have the means or space. To the owners - you absolutely shouldn't be selling chickens / other live animals. You clearly don't have the space / enclosures needed to house that many chickens and you clearly don't care about the animals you're selling. Your employees seem to have a lack of knowledge on animal care and should be trained to know what to do to care of injured animals. This is clearly an animals-for-profit type of pet store that anyone who loves animals should absolutely avoid. I usually avoid this place because the birds already sadden me, and I've heard of the poor care given to the live animals. I'll absolutely never return and I really hope the owners think hard about keeping these living animals. At the very least, keep a smaller amount. It doesn't seem like they're even selling much of these animals. It's just cruel. I'd like to know what happens with their chickens once they're too large for these tiny cages!

So I didn't come back for a while. Now I come here when my regular store doesn't have good Orchard hay. Ojai Valley Feed usually does. I've gotten good hay from them, though their hay is on a dirt lot so last time it was dragged across dirt before going into my truck. Maybe doesn't matter if you're tossing it for cattle or horses? But I'm feeding guinea pigs so I'd rather it not be dusty. I get it though, it's a feed store. I guess that's just the reason they're not my #1 go to for the hay and rather my #2. Prices are fair for the area. I like the guy who seems to own/run the place. He's super nice. The younger employees are fine but not enthusiastic. One time I visited and it was only the younger folks taking care of the store. I inquired about the fresh chicken eggs I'd seen here on Yelp and I was told pretty flatly that "Oh, you have to be on a list," and that was that. I felt totally shut down and felt the employee missed an opportunity to engage me as a customer, maybe ask if I wanted to be on the list, or tell me what the process to get on the list was (is there a time they expect to add new names to the list??) That's the only downside. Shop is small, but I was also super happy to see they sell feeder animals like crickets, mice and rats. I had just paid for a $60 purchase and realized I really needed 2 crickets. The shopkeeper gave them to me no charge. I know they're cheap but he didn't have to do that and I really appreciated it!

I was greeted by the nicest employee ever, Kae. She answered all my questions about everything in the store and she was extremely knowledgeable about each item. We even compared notes on our favorite soaps and agreed on many of them and had a few good laughs. She pointed out that there was an article about the owner and the shop in the most recent "Edible " magazine. I took the magazine home and read all about the business and her passion for the environment and for her future legacy that she will leave to her two daughters and the planet. That concern is reflected greatly in her shop. She also has a store in Topanga It's important to know that, even though the items seem more expensive, you only need a tablespoon of liquid for a load of laundry. The quality of the products in the store is much higher therefore things are not watered down and the potency is not diluted so that you can use a lot less and get a big bang for your buck. It's kinda like the analogy of eating Whole Foods that may seem like they cost more, but you feel much fuller, and your body benefits much more than if you had eaten processed foods that cost a fraction of the price which offer you no benefit at all other than a fake feeling of fullness. And you get the added bonus of an unhealthy diet thrown in for your money. So you might want to rethink how you're spending your money and you might want to spend the money that you have in a smarter way both for yourself and the environment.

It is an honor to pay a little extra to opt out of the extremely sad and misleading trash economy and can trust that my plastic dish/hand/etc soap bottles aren't ending up getting shipped to developing countries/ end up in the oceans of Southeast Asia and beyond, where they break down into microplastics and cycle back through our food systems as endocrine disruptors for future generations. Care is the secret ingredient here--and it shows.

Fortunately, I muzzle trained her and it was easier for them to take her in. However, they had a hard time handling her when they tried to begin the surgery with the anesthesia so they charged me a $20 aggressive handling fee. That's the only thing that caught me off guard when I saw the itemized receipt of what they were charging me. Even with that charge, their prices were very reasonable! Overall I paid $225 (including a $15 donation I made). They also provided pain medication to give to Bailey the days after her surgery. In terms of her procedure and stitching, they stated they used internal dissolvable stitches so I didn't need to go back to get them removed (looove that!). The area is very small and looks like it is healing properly so far. The cone on her head didn't work for her. She kept bumping into walls, corners, and it made her even more anxious so I got her a suit instead which seems to be working great! I just make sure to wash the suit every few days to prevent buildup of bacteria/germs. 1 day after surgery, she was already back to her normal self! We have to take extra precautions to prevent her from getting an injury since she is normally a very jumpy/excited dog, but everything has been great! Would definitely get another pet spayed here if needed.
