I would not go here, call somewhere else. Bad vibes. My dog has never been more stressed out. Could easily make a dog reactive.

I've tried this place twice in three years; every time they mess up / hurt my little dog. The first time, we went for JUST A CLAW TRIM; and he came back, shaking and with his tail curled in & with a weirdly swollen bottom. Within five hours, that turned into an anal gland abscess that WAS NOT THERE before; he had never had this issue and never has suffered from it since. So I chalked this experience up to "maybe they thought he needed it done because he is little/or maybe it's a coincidence."...and didn't come back till today, about two years later. Fast forward to today; I came in, explaining that a) my dog is not mean or bite-y, but is TERRIBLE at getting his nails trimmed, FULL disclosure. I normally do it, but it's a goat rodeo. I remind them NOT to squeeze his butt, and say, if you can't do it, it's ok. I have to step out because if he can see me, he will cry. No worries if they CAN'T do it. My dog has been with me all day and night, as usual, and is in fine spirits. 15 minutes later, I walk in, he is tied to a railing and crying (ok, he's a Dramatic Little Dog) and I come to pay and collect him, expecting to pay, apologize for his shrieks and tip heavily. The woman who I entrusted my dog to was COMPLETELY HOSTILE and says "Your dog CANNOT BE TRIMMED" and I said, "that's ok, did you get any of them done?" And she said, "-AND! His DEW CLAW IS BROKEN." As though *I* had done something to him. Ummmm...FIFTEEN MINUTES AGO he had been FINE. Now a streak of blood is on his chest, his foot is bleeding! his nail is BROKEN and he is clearly very sad, trembling and hurt. Not only does this woman NOT EVEN APOLOGIZE, she goes on to say "well, I don't KNOW, but it's broken NOW." Seriously? Had she even trimmed ONE SINGLE NAIL without BREAKING it and then trying to blame ME, I would have paid full price. Deductive reasoning says; I won't be going back here. Beware! 2 stars as it is clean and I have seen that they do a nice job grooming the fluffy haired pups. read more

I really appreciate how conscientious the staff at Ultimutt Pet Spa are with my adult and adolescent Shetland Sheepdogs. Ashley does an amazing job and I receive compliments from other Sheltie owners on how perfectly she grooms my fur-babies. She is also willing to use the shampoo I sometimes bring that my veterinarian recommends. Rene (owner) grooms a Labradoodle of a friend of mine and always does a great job. My dogs always seem happy to go to Ultimutt. I wouldn't trust anyone else in Ventura County with my Shelties. read more

Unfortunate that I'm writing this review because up until recently the quality was fantastic, but my latest grooming on my dog was amateur at best. Very uneven cuts, massive tracks in his fur caused by clippers, chunks taken out of areas that aren't meant to be clipped/cut and to my surprise there were even mats left in my dogs fur after I picked him up. It's a real shame because this was an amazing place to take you pet to but it looks like ownership has changed and quality has declined. read more

As can be seen below, Ultimutt Pet Spa received rave reviews when the owner was Lisa. She is deeply intuitive about animals and communicates with them gently and with assurance. My Golden Retriever emerged from a bath with Lisa happy, fluffy, and anxious to go on parade around town, he felt so happy. Sadly for Ojai but pleasantly for Lisa, she eventually moved away. . . . . When I took my dog back to the same place from which he'd always emerged happy, clean and proud, I received a phone call that he was anxious, having diarrhea, and I should come get him right away. As if this weren't bad enough, they were angry at HIM (for whatever traumatic event or handling altered his usual happy, complacent mood). I was able to find a new groomer, and he behaved perfectly and emerged clean and fluffy. read more

Unfortunately, after bringing my dog here for a couple of years, I am done with Ultimutt spa. The owner has always done a good job grooming my dog but the last couple of visits have been very unpleasant as she was extremely rude and unprofessional. The final straw was due to her mistake of not writing down our regular 6 week appointments in their appointment book. Rather than being apologetic, she behaved as I ruined her day her day by showing up for my appointment and said I cannot get another appointment for at least 6 weeks. I am an Ojai local and always try to support the small businesses in my community but I would rather groom my dog myself than leaving him with someone who always seems to be having a bad day. read more

We just moved to the area and took our little dog, Watson here for his first grooming in the new local. What an awesome experience! Watson has a hard time with grooming because about 4 years ago a groomer down in Burbank, burned (yes burned him) and it took another groomer 2 years to get him over terror at being groomed, so you can imagine I am very careful with groomers. Lisa was an absolute doll, she made some terrific suggestions for keeping Watty calm, and spent a lot of time with him before even "taking him over the counter". She really seemed to care about his well being. I felt very confident leaving him there. Well, he was done in no time and they did a terrific job, Watson was not too stressed, and they were not stingy with the treats! A WONDERFUL experience. We will be regular customers from here on out! read more

We took our new dog in for a hair cut last week, on a Saturday without an appointment. All the people working there were extremely nice, friendly and helpful... and they accommodated us despite being so busy. Our dog was apprehensive to our new family and to this new experience... but they were very gentle with her. They did a great job, far better than we expected and at a very reasonable price. I am absolutely shocked at the way I was mistreated upon arriving for my appointment today . I had an appointment for my dog earlier last week that was canceled on me very unprofessionally at the very last minute . When I received the call , the women told me she had to cancel and asked to reschedule for the following week, today . I agreed in desperation as I had been waiting weeks for this appointment and had scheduled my whole day around it , but hung up realizing she hadn't given a time . Today when I came in for my dogs much needed grooming appointment, she was angry with me right off the bat, and so rude that I actually could not believe it . I love people and can usually connect with just about anyone but I have never been treated so terribly in any service . She told me , as she worked on another dog and behind her another dog was being groomed by another staff member , that on Wednesday she is usually closed but had opened it especially for me , and that my appointment was at 10 and that she was about to leave , even though an hour later I went by and she was still there. She told me she would never not tell me the time , and whether she did tell me the time or not , No one coming in to seek and pay for a service she is providing should be treated that way . I ended up walking out because she was treating me like I was nothing , and like I had done something wrong , when in fact she had canceled an appointment we had been waiting on for weeks on me minutes before the appointment was scheduled . I have never experienced such horrible customer service and such inhumane treatment . read more

We first tried the Ultimutt Pet Spa in Ojai back in 1992 when our new Puppy Max was too much of a handful for the groomers that were closer to our home. Lisa took her time not only with Max, but with us, his nervous new owners. She impressed us right away not only with her obvious love and care for animals which is a huge comfort but also with her vast knowledge and experience which she humbly but freely shared with us, even on the phone before we came in! Max's first experience at the other groomers wasn't a good one, but Lisa helped to put him at ease, and he quickly grew to love his visits to the Ultimutt Pet Spa. That was all we needed to see! Later on, Lisa helped us learn how we could deal with Max's occasionally less than perfect behaviors, she shared her knowledge of "Natural Rearing" and helped us to sort out a skin condition on my sister's dog. . .the list goes on and on! There was always something to learn from Lisa, and she always seemed genuinely interested in the welfare of our pets. While our dear Max is no longer with us, when we got Abby we knew who was going to provide her first Pet Spa pampering, and now Ben goes to the Ultimutt Pet Spa too! read more

Lisa and her team are so nice and just great people! My wife and I were visiting Ojai for the weekend and after going on a hike with our dog and getting stuck in the rain, he really need a quick wash and blowdry. With just an hour before closing on a Saturday she graciously whisked us right in and not only gave him a great wash, but she also gave him a complimentary trim. She is so nice! What a great place. This really is THE place to go in Ojai for pet grooming. Lisa is truly the best. She not only has well honed skills, she is SO very good with dogs. I can't tell you how many places I have taken my dog to where I end up getting scolded by the groomer because my dog is either too scared, too dirty or too matted. I let my scared little pup be a pup and run around in the backyard and it happens And he has a terrible undercoat--so matting happens. So on top of getting a great bath or grooming job, it is really fantastic when Lisa is so understanding that dogs have to be dogs. She is so patient with my little skid dish boy, as well as our super high strung other dog. Other groomers had recommended we sedate our dogs to get groomed and I was very happy when Lisa was able to groom them without sedation AND did not complain about them afterward. I mistakenly tried a few other groomers and there just is no comparison--I won't be taking him anywhere else. read more

I took my dobie-service dog to this spa today for her first appointment. I came ontime for my appointment. The lady said that the bather that would do my dog was out getting lunch for everyone and it would be awhile. I said I wanted to wait. She then said that it would be a long wait and that it was better if I come back at the end of the day. I was surprised because I had an appointment. Also, she seemed very unfriendly and nobody even looked at or met my dog. I did not want to leave my large dog in a cage for several hours, until they got around to seeing her. Especially since my dog did not even know these people. so I said that I would cancel my appointment. The lady then said in a loud voice, OKAY, as if she couldnt care less if I came here or not. There was no apology and she did not ask if I wanted to reschedule! I then said that it was obvious that they did not need the business and left. read more
