Whenever I need construction or repairs around the house, I call Shannon. He has an extensive knowledge of building materials; he has an excellent sense of design; and he works with great attention to detail. Most recently, he built a backyard fence for us, using some existing, metal fence posts that had been set in concrete. First, he cleaned up these fence posts, taking steps to ensure they would not rust. Then he fabricated his own steel clamps to secure wooden posts to the metal ones. He floated those wooden posts on a layer of polyurethane glue to decouple them from the ground, and he attached the fence boards so that they sat on gravel rather than directly on the ground. The fence itself is rock-solid, and every element of it is designed to weather well. This is the fourth or fifth job he's done for us, and I've been mightily impressed by every one of them. read more

I have written thirty reviews on Yelp and various reviews on other sites. Out of those, all have been extremely positive except for four, which were somewhat negative. One of those was AT&T, so I don't know if that really counts! I am compelled to write my fifth negative review, and it is for Shannon Touhy Repairs in Chicago. I needed gutter repairs, and I found this company on the internet. They had no reviews posted on Yelp, but came in less expensive than the other two companies that I called. Shannon, the owner, told me that he was very knowledgeable about gutters, and gave me two references. He told me about his technical education from Coyne Institute and how much he knows. On the day of the repair, he sent someone else to do the work. He came hours earlier than the original appointment, and when I returned home the new gutter did not look right in the yard. It's a large white downspout across the back of my house. I called Shannon and asked him why he had never asked me what color gutters to get. He said that I didn't ask him about colors. He told me that the previous downspout had been white, but of course that one was in a position that hardly showed. This new one looks very bad in my yard. Shannon told me he could come out and paint the white one another color and that I would have to pay him $80. I had already paid him $440 for the ugly white downspout. His assistant also left garbage in the back instead of hauling it away. When I asked Shannon about it, he said that people would come through the alley and take what was there. I spoke to other people who have knowledge of gutters and downspouts, and they said I could get a green one to blend in with the yard for about $20, which should have been put in to begin with. I called Shannon and asked him to replace the white one with a green one. His response was, "You're crazy." Not only is he unprofessional, but he must have missed the classes at Coyne Institute that dealt with customer service and basic good sense. I would recommend that anyone considering Shannon Touhy Repairs go elsewhere. read more

I needed a small job to be done and no one would come out and take care of it for me. Touhy Repairs was referred to me and I'm glad he was. He came within a couple of days of me contacting me and took care of my issue. I had a piece of aluminum hanging from the second floor and a few shingles loose. He took care of everything. Avoid at all costs. We had gutters installed by Thouhy Repairs and I've never had such poor service or workmanship. We were robbed. The downspouts didn't attach, the flashing was incorrect and didn't connect to the house or gutters (depending where you looked) and the team left trash in the gutters (water bottles, chip bags). In some spots the gutters weren't even attached to the house! One 10' stretch was held on by one screw, leaving the gutter to hang 1-2" away from the house. Nearly every corner leaked and none of the gutters were aligned properly so water would sit in them vs drain to the downspouts. Shannon came out to "fix" the job. He did not. Multiple attempts to reach him again have gone unanswered. Had to hire someone else to fix the work. Poor quality. Unethical. I have photos. read more

We scheduled the company to come out to look at a gutter that needs repair. They never came and never called to explain or reschedule. We called back, and Shannon sent someone to give us a quote and said they were ordering materials. They again failed to show up on the scheduled date. Had to call again. They failed to show up a third time. At that point, we gave them one last chance to do what they said they were going to do. Nope. Shannon talks a good game, but does nothing. Whatever he promises you is not going to happen. We waited on him so long that it is too late to hire anyone else now that the snow is flying. Save yourself time and trouble and look elsewhere. Touhy Repairs has literally rebuilt our 1928 Chicago Bungalow! I cannot say enough positive things about Shannon, he and his team have more integrity than every other handyman/contractor in Chicago put together. We bought a foreclosed home in 2013 and after having several horrible experiences with other contractors we reached out to Touhy Repairs on recommendation from some friends. Shannon is timely, personable, honest, and most importantly an extremely hard worker. He and his team have done everything from replace our gutters, rewired sections of our home, wire/plumb our kitchen for it's first dishwasher & garbage disposal, replaced our water heater (including reworking the water piping that was badly damaged from the foreclosure time), replaced several windows, put in a tile backsplash and repaired/replaced a significant amount of drywall that was badly damaged/missing from a radiator system that had burst and been removed. With every repair (small or large) Shannon has been upfront about cost, found ways to work within our budget, and provided us options. Additionally he always walks us through the end product to ensure we are satisfied (which we have always been!) and he always throws in an extra bonus project as a fun surprise for us. For instance when he replaced our gutters, he put up a gutter on our garage over our patio for free. Many of our jobs were done in an emergency or on a time crunch and Shannon has made it happen without hesitation or complaint even when it's meant working on the weekends or late at night. Touhy Repairs is hands down the most amazing repairs option in Chicago! I have recommended him to numerous other friends and everyone has been thrilled with his work! I also cannot say enough positive things about Shannon. I've used him twice so far, and I will definitely use him again! Not only is he very knowledgeable, but he's thorough in explaining pricing. He repaired a hole in our roof after a branch fell and pierced right through the soffit. He replaced the broken wood and shingles- you'd never know there was a hole! I've also used him to do some minor handyman work in a condo that I rent out. He was able to come within a day and complete the work, and his prices are extremely reasonable! The roof work would have cost me about three times as much had I used a roofing company. He;s professional, punctual and very good at just about ANYTHING home-related. I probably should write more reviews and I will. Because I bought a gut rehab, and have had many small problems that need to be fixed. I have met with many contractors and Shannon is one of the best I've met with. Anyway, I noticed the pitch was wrong on my gutters. I called Shannon and explained my problem. I could have repaired the pitch myself, but my new home is 2.5 stories tall and I for sure don't have a ladder that high, nor would I want to even if I did. He estimated an amount on the phone but was honest and said it could be more or less once they see the situation upon arrival. I immediately thought to myself "oh jeez, he's opening the door to charge me more". To my surprise, he came out, assessed it and it was half the price he originally estimated. Plus he recommended things to help keep the water coming out the downspouts further away from the house and possible upgrades to my downspouts to make them practically maintenance free (over-sized downspouts). But all situations are different, this applied to mine. Bottom line, he was honest, and was very knowledgable. He explained thoroughly all the questions I had. I would recommend him to all family and friends should they need gutter work. I haven't used him for any other service he offers but I would definitely call him for at least a quote. read more

The straps that secure our gutters to the roof were damaged and needed to be replaced. We called Touhy Repairs based on a recommendation from the gutter cleaning guys. We were very happy with the service, they took the time to explain what the issue was and to show us how the straps were secured. We were having issues with 2 of our gutters spilling over due to pulling away from the fascia. With the storm season in full swing, I reached out to Shannon to schedule an ASAP appointment before my deck was ruined. Shannon was very knowledgeable and was able to give a quote over the phone to re-pitch the gutters and secure properly to the fascia. Once here, he offered to secure the other gutters on the house for a nominal fee. The work turned out to be a little more than expected, but Shannon still came in under the original quote. I would not recommend using this company. We hired them two years ago to repair two of our building's downspouts. The company came out, repaired them, and offered a two-year warranty. Of course we wouldn't have retained the company without the warranty. All fine at that point. 19 months after the repair, one of the downspouts fell. I called the owner Shannon to explain the situation and inquire whether he would have the downspout fixed and honor the warranty. He said he would. During our initial dialogue he explained the cold weather would not allow him to make the repair which I completely understood. However, over the coming weeks and months, the weather was a non-issue and I continued to call Mr. Touhy, at least nine times, to arrange a day and time for the repair. In the initial months I was patient and he even thanked me for my patience. However, On no fewer than seven occasions in which Mr. Touhy committed to a day to do the repair, he never showed, never called, and never followed up to reschedule. Today was the latest day he said he would show and hasn't. It has now been over four months since my initial outreach and we still do not have a fixed downspout. We have contingent condo sales in the building which have flagged the downspout so to have this be an ongoing issue is completely unacceptable. It is truly out of my character to write a review like this but in order to protect other potential customers, would advise against using this company. read more

Our condo association hired these guys to replace a downspout on our building last fall. We were given a quote of $400, I was then called by Shannon who let me know the job was now going to cost $470, which I reluctantly agreed to per they were on the job and we wanted to get it over with. I gave him our credit card over the phone to pay the $470. I looked at our condo charges and he ran it for $530. I called him to let him know and of course he was "sorry" and refunded the $60 (good thing I checked the charge or it would have gone unnoticed). The reason I checked was the feeling of being part of his "bait and switch price quote" and was suspicious. Fast forward five months and the downspout has fallen off the building. I called to let him know and of course he reassured me they would honor the "one year guarantee" he told me about. Three months later and 4 voice mail messages and guess what? No returned phone call and no honoring of the "guarantee". So that was $470 bucks down the drain. Word from the wise-STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS. The only guarantee we experienced was the "tail light guarantee" They can't even complete a simple job. read more

Toughy Repairs did an excellent job repairing our gutters and siding. We bought an old house with some deferred maintenance and need help understanding how to prioritize. Shannon and his partner are very knowledgeable. Shannon made recommendations that we could use to make decisions - what's urgent, what can wait - and identified important things we would never have thought of. The first round of work went really well. Price was reasonable at about $2300 including repairing and cleaning our 3rd floor gutters, painting the fascia, replacing a piece of rotten wood on the exterior and a lot of other items that needed attention. 2 days of work for 2 people. And they came out to do the work within 48 hours of the initial call. Unbelievable. Usually I've been waiting 1-2 months for jobs like this. Very unprofessional and does sloppy work. The first appointment, he did not even show up. He said he "forgot" and did not even have my address. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and rescheduled. The second time, he showed up 2 hours late. I had already left, but he examined the job and gave me an estimate by telephone. I thought I was doing him a favor by letting him do some repair work that went beyond the gutters, but he proved completely incapable, and was not honest about his capabilities. The gutter replacement went alright, but he promised to return to paint the ugly gutter straps he had hung wrong, and he never showed up, despite making another appointment. Three missed appointments in all. The roof patch on my garage was--by his own admission--done sloppily and he blamed his employee. He promised to correct it, but, of course never showed up to do so. He was supposed to do other repair work on our garage, but simply blew it off. Cant imagine ever using this company again for anything, and would not recommend their services. read more

I have been trying for years to resolve the issue of the snow freezing on the roof and then spilling over into the porch as it melts. I thought - this cant be right - there has to be a fix. So I started looking for a gutter guy and found him on Yelp. Shannon confirmed on the phone what I thought; I have a 2 flat and the gutter is too small to handle the snow that freezes as that part of the roof has no heat rising from the house and the snow becomes an ice block in the gutter and downspout, and then washes over the roof into the porch as it melts. He gave me a very reasonable estimate and took his time to peel back the roof and remove the small gutter. He found a big gap where the roof and the porch meets and repaired that too. He promised no more problems, and said that this is a very common problem with the slant roof on 2 flat buildings and pointed out other buildings in the neighborhood that had the wrong gutter size and were probably having the same problem. What a relief to know that I am all set for the next big snow. I just flip the switch and turn on the heat cables that are on the roof and in the gutter. Thanks Touhy Repairs!!!
