Out of the nine contractors we interviewed, Renzo was the only one who insisted on no cement approach; made me consult an arborist; suggested to grade the whole front lot instead of just replacing the old pathway; and genuinely cared about my plants.  We didn't want to hire him at the beginning and was even about to sign contract with someone else. It all started with the inquiry of concrete footing which he refused to do and I wanted to know why. He replied promptly. During our communication, Renzo's clarity, persistence, knowledge and patience impressed and persuaded me, not to mention his very reasonable quote. Instinctively I knew I could trust Renzo and he is the right guy for my project, even though I haven't met him.  So I waited a month and hired him. The wait was worth it. They built three walls and one patio, redesigned front left yard by grading and building a new pebble pathway with statue, installed lighting and irrigation system that had better dripping rings. They also revamped the driveway that made it look brand new and pebble-covered the right front yard.  It was truly a remarkable experience. Not only they did an excellent job with fine craftmanship, but their punctuality, hardwork, efficiency, know-how, discipline, organization, respect, kindness and neatness were a force to be reckoned with and an inspiration beyond a mere landscaping job. They take pride at what they do and the result is phenomenal! Before and during the three-week construction, Renzo was very respectful and made me feel my opinion matters. He was responsive, accommodating, flexible, easygoing and honest. He listened. He always showed how it would look. When something didn't work out, he was open to suggestions and assisted with solutions. I felt he had my best interest. The level of care to my plants led to high survival rate during transplant. I also noticed one of my trees was magically recovered from disease and the other was vigorously blossoming, which has never happened before. They brought life to my garden. Everything was done very nicely. They cleaned up the whole place and it was much better and cleaner than when they started. They also showed up for additional work as promised. Renzo and his crew transformed my old and messy space into the most beautiful and meaningful garden/haven that I could have only dreamed of. With the new lawn, now my garden has never looked better. We got Renzo's info from our neighbor who had them converted their front yard several years ago. We've talked to 5 or 6 different landscapers, Renzo's quote is not cheapest, but we know they can do a good job, so we decided to hire Renzo for our front yard conversion project. Renzo's crew did an excellent job, they have completed every phase with quality, on time, clean up every day, and with professional attitude. We have applied landscape conversion rebate from Valley Water, Renzo suggested plants from a long qualified plant list, this helped a lot since we had no idea which plant to use (we did not hire a designer because our plan is straightforward). There are two dripping ring popped out and the front faucet had slow leak after the work had finished. Renzo came back 3 times to fix them. We are glad that we went with Renzo and will recommend him to neighbors and friends. read more

This company, headed by Renzo Rivera, was on our landscape designer's list of recommended landscapers. Our job started out as relatively small (around $9,000) and some of the other landscaping companies did not want to bid, because they were tied up doing larger commercial projects. Are we ever glad that they were- because Renzo and his team were FANTASTIC! Our job grew by nearly 100% as we decided to completely remove and replace an additional 5- 25'-30' trees that were not doing well (we originally planned to remove only 2), replace them with 12 new trees, and add drip irrigation to some areas that were not on the original plan. We originally had 81 sprinklers on our property, and all but 23 (which water our lawn) were replaced with drip irrigation. While on this subject, if you are applying for the Santa Clara Valley Water District "In-Line Drip Conversion" rebate be aware of their rules: "Only 1/2" in-line drip tubing irrigation systems with built-in, factory installed drip emitters qualify for a rebate. Non-qualifying forms of drip irrigation include: Point-source drip emitters/drippers (emitters that need to be manually attached to drip tubing and are not built-in), multi-outlet drippers, microspray, and bubblers." I was not aware of this restriction, and we had point-source drip emitters installed. I have no idea why this restriction exists. The drip emitters look to us to be more efficient Back to Total Landscape: Renzo and his team arrived on the date promised and every subsequent day for 9 working days, and did a phenomenal amount of hard work. Rather than cutting down our 7 trees and leaving stumps, they dug, chain-sawed and chopped out all 7 of the large stumps. Our irrigation system and valves were 90% completely rebuilt and replaced. 23 old sprinklers were replaced by Hunter MPR Rotator sprinkler bodies and nozzles. In all 88 new plants and 14 new trees were planted and the beds mulched. We have 3 40' redwoods beside our driveway which had filled the surrounding area with roots. Renzo's team painstakingly removed the roots and replanted the area. Renzo's team was great! At the end of every working day his men neatly stacked all their tools in their wheelbarrows and swept off any sidewalk areas that needed it. We wanted to install low voltage lighting, and Renzo recommended a Florida company called "Volt Lighting" (voltlighting.com). We went on their website and ordered 9 of their brass bronze "Max Spread" 24" stem lights(3W), and 5 "Fat Boy" spotlights (5W and 7W for larger trees), and are thrilled with the quality and appearance. Our ground feels like concrete when you try to dig in it due to compaction and roots, and we elected to have Renzo's team install the 14 lights. Subsequent to our project we decided to order and install 3 more, which I did myself- and I sure appreciated how hard it is to dig a 10" hole in our soil to install the lamp spikes! Total Landscape offers a 1 year warranty on plants, and we have already had 6-7 replaced which were not doing well- no questions asked. Renzo made some substitutions on our original plant list due to availability and suitability to each area, and we are very happy with the results. We had a very uneven brick sidewalk at the side of our garage due to tree roots pushing up bricks. It needed a lot of work to make it level again. Renzo at one point thought that he would relocate some sprinkler pipes under the sidewalk, and had the bricks taken up. When that strategy proved to not be the best answer, Renzo's team completely rebuilt the sidewalk, leveling it and pouring concrete edging. This was an unexpected bonus! We liked the mulch that Renzo provided and wanted to buy some more ourselves to cover a few additional areas, but the nursery that supplied it was out of stock. Renzo and his team came by yesterday to repair a broken sprinkler and install some additional dip heads, and surprised us by bringing a large amount of matching redwood small bark mulch which he had sourced from a different supplier- for free. His men installed it on our garden for no charge, and we are extremely delighted for this. I could say more, but you get the picture- Total Landscape is a "Can-do, will-do" company that is extremely customer-focused, easy to deal with, flexible, and professional. We started the landscape process last year by hiring a landscape designer. She gave us 5 recommendations for landscape contractors, and we followed up with each one. Total Landscape and Renzo Rivera stood out from the others by being competitive in price, professional, knowledgeable, and hardworking. We hired them in Dec 2023 with a start date of Feb 2024 and they did not disappoint. It was a big project, replacing lawn and existing plants in our front, back, and side yards, with new irrigation and lighting systems. Rarely have I been surprised and delighted by a contractor's work on a project. Usually there is always some detail out of place or some degree of buyers remorse. I'm happy to say that Renzo and his team did it! I cannot say enough good things about them. The quality of their work is top notch. They care about getting the small details right, even if it means tearing up a section of pavers and relaying them to fix a mistake. He was constantly communicating with me regarding the project to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. Renzo and his team are the absolute best. They are the whole package: clean, communicative, and they deliver quality work on time. Our project encompassed the front, side AND back yard and included hardscape and landscaping. It was a huge project. First of all, we interviewed quite a few landscape contractors and right from the start, Renzo was the most accommodating and frankly, the most honest about what could or couldn't be done. His calm demeanor and informed suggestions, in addition to his studied referral to the design documents, were reassuring and convinced me and my husband that his company was the one to use. Second of all, when his team first showed up at the house, on time and ready to go, they were polite and organized. Every morning, Renzo would go through the plan with them for the day and they would work consistently until quitting time. They were kind and considerate. And every evening, before they left for the day, they would clean up their equipment, put away their tools, and stack all their stuff before they left. Their cleanliness was amazing. Additionally, they were extra careful of our safety during the construction. An example? After they took out the step to the back door, the step up was pretty steep. They built a ramp of dirt so that we could step up with ease. Unasked for but so considerate! Third, lines of communication between Renzo and his team and between us and Renzo were open at all times. Of course, we hit a few snags and some changes in the plan along the way. Everything was handled professionally and with the highest quality. If Renzo's guys couldn't do it, Renzo knew someone who could. In fact, there were some design changes that Renzo and his team suggested that were spot on (ie the steps up to the pool patio). They were very open to what we wanted to change and what we didn't. That being said, nothing comes for free and we did have to pay for the changes we implemented. But honestly, it was worth the cost. Fourth, Renzo and his team at Total Landscape finished their part of the work in the time frame that they promised. The only thing that prevented them from full completion was that our project ended end of December and there wasn't a single nursery in the area that had enough plants for the plan. Despite that, Renzo kept in touch and two months later when the plants were available at the nursery, he ordered what we needed and then accompanied us to the wholesale nursery to supplement our plant list and allow us to choose what we wanted! The end result was magnificent and honestly, everyone who sees the change in our backyard says it looks better than most resorts. Renzo with Total Landscape did a complete yard conversion to a drought tolerant landscape on a home we have in San Jose. He was recommended by our landscape architect, KL Design LLC. We now live on the East Coast and all the work was done through email and text. Needless to say, having to work remotely made us nervous, but Renzo was so responsive that I heard from him the same day I would contact him by email. I even got a response at 5:45 am. Renzo completed the work exactly to plan which included removal of a large area of lawn and replacement with native plants, decorative rock, mulch, pavers, a sitting area and a drip system. They stood out already at the quoting stage. Our landscape designer has provided a design and documentation with all the details. Total Landscape was a great choice for a complicated project landscaping our sloping backyard and we recommend it with the greatest enthusiasm! I have taken way too long to write this review -18 months since the work was completed--but that time has allowed me to see how beautifully the company's work has stood the test of time. Renzo submitted a highly competitive bid and, equally important, was exceptionally skillful, professional, and committed to quality throughout the entire project. This was no surprise: he came highly recommended by our landscape designer, on Yelp, and by the references he provided, who spoke in detail about his working methods and standards. Our happy experience was absolutely consistent with those enthusiastic reviews. Renzo worked out a four-week schedule to carry out our landscape designer's complex project plan, which included a new patio, retaining wall, extensive new irrigation on top of the existing irrigation system, a patch of lawn, and extensive shrubs. The work also had the technical difficulty of being on a sharply sloping lot and requiring working around a huge existing retaining wall and steps. We had to wait several months until Renzo and his team could begin work, as they were booked up at this time (middle of the pandemic). They were *definitely* worth waiting for! Once they began work, the team was on site every day except when it was raining hard. They worked very efficiently and with excellent attention to detail - we observed how they were working on a daily basis, and also have now lived with the results of their work for 18 months and found the quality has held up very well. It was a pleasure having them at our house! With any major project, there are aspects that have to be worked out in the process - one can't figure out every detail in advance, even with a very good plan. Renzo communicated clearly on these, offering some - but not too many - options, helping us understand the pros and cons of each. This was a key role. We are happy with every decision we made. The very best landscaping company within 100 miles of us - by far! - is Renzo Rivera / Total Landscape! Renzo owns the company, and his brother works with him as his landscaping foreman. They have demo'ed both our front and back yards, hardscaped both front and back, installed all of our planting beds, put up (2) gates for us, hand-build a beautiful stone knee-wall, and installed all of our paver pathways and our paver driveway. They have also done a lot of concrete work for us, installed an irrigation system, built some in-ground drainage systems, and planted all of our citrus trees. There is very little that they can't do! We hired Total Landscape to install artificial turf, dig a French drain, and move a faucet. The work was completed in October, but I waited to assess wear and weathering before writing a review. I would definitely give Renzo and his crew 5 stars (and more). The turf appears seamless and there are no low spots. Water is not collecting anywhere. My dogs have run at full speed over the turf, we have eaten dinner on the turf, and my family works out in the area. The installation is perfect. Similarly, we have no complaints about the French drain or new faucet. Renzo came over to give an estimate, explained the timeframe, installation process, and pointed out the pros and cons of my design. It was a very easy planning process. Renzo's crew was great. They arrived at 8 am every morning and were hard at work by 8:10. They were neat and they knew what they were doing. Renzo stopped by everyday to check on the progress. I provided coffee for the crew and they rinsed out their coffee cups and put them on my porch at the end of the day! The project came in on time and budget. When they left, you never would have known that a crew had been there, except for the improvements. We're asking Total Landscape to install our hardscape next. As an aside - my neighbor wanted some of my excavated soil for his flower bed. Renzo took the time to select the richest soil, and his crew wheeled the dirt over. I'm commenting on this because attention to detail is so important. read more

I can't begin to echo the sentiments shared by previous reviews. Renzo and his team were true professionals. Renzo came highly recommended by a fellow mom who've used him for several projects in her two homes. With that type of recommendation from one person, that was enough to convince me to bring him in for an interview. My husband and I had a general idea of what we envisioned for our backyard and Renzo provided a few recommendations but also suggested that we do our own research (very reasonable request). We finally came back with a couple of ideas and we walked him through it. He was very patient with us and gave us his professional opinion and provided detailed itemized quote. We had a few good long discussions to finalize our idea. In our final quote, he provided a copy of his business license and a payment schedule so that everything was clear for both parties. I truly appreciated that. Admittedly, we had to wait a few months to finally get him and his team to come out to help us with our project but the wait was worth it. His team were generally respectful about our space as well as being conscientious around our neighbors . They were hard working and did quality work as my husband I both inspected the work daily. They used quality material, organized their tools and materials before leaving, and was kind enough to accommodate additional tasks. Renzo was a true professional. He often would reach out to us to clarify some main activities for the day, and shared suggestions on things that would come up that would require our attention. Our main concerns were to keep our backyard clean, low maintenance, and functional for our kids. We ended up getting artificial turf, pavers, small deck, steps, and lighting. The price was fair and the work was stellar. We really appreciate working with him and his team and will highly recommend him to our friends, family, and neighbors. Update: Renzo's team just completed our front yard project which included both hardscape and landscape. Our front yard is now a safe and fun area for our toddler to enjoy, this is super important during the current Covid limitations. Renzo was very flexible with plant selections and last minute changes from our end. The crew was thoughtful with the placement of plants and accommodating when we requested for slight adjustments. Anytime something came up, you can count on Renzo to come up with a solution. I cannot say enough good things about our experience and the outcome is beyond our expectation. read more

Total Landscape modified our front yard and half our backyard. They replaced our driveway, walkway and porch with pavers. They added a paver walkway from the front to the back, and added a large paver patio in the back. Everything they did was what we expected and more. It was very easy to discuss our plan with Renzo, and he was very accommodating to our wishes. Renzo and his staff were very experienced and knowledgeable about all of the work. The staff was very professional and strived to make every part of the project as perfect as possible. For any future landscaping projects, we will definitely call Total Landscape. read more

Renzo and his team are top notch. There is very little I can add to all the good things others have said. Renzo did the entire house landscaping for us including grass lawn, lot of plants and trees, irrigation, low voltage lighting, hardscaping, water fountain, turf and a few other custom things. This was a large project ($100K - $150K) that took almost two months. Renzo worked through multiple unanticipated issues without making a big deal about it. I found Renzo on Yelp, and I'm so glad I did. I like pretty much everything about how he does business. 1] He has an air of trustworthiness about him. I just always had a good feeling when I spoke with him. 2] Renzo was a great communicator, both before, during, and after the project. A great listener too. 3] He and his crew built an artisanal fence for us. It's so flipping good looking. Every time I'm in my front yard, if somebody walks by on the sidewalk, I get a compliment. Oh, and I call it artisanal, but the engineering that went into this fence was phenomenal. He built it next to unyielding tree branches, he created awkward, less than 90 ° angles at my request, he curved the fence around a curvy corner, and he even went downhill with it - and you can't tell. He tried to explain it to me ... well, you know. I just wanted a bomb dot com end product and I got it. 4] His crew was so great. They always arrived at the perfect time in the morning. They were quiet. They never shouted across the yard to each other. I never heard them talking. They were neat, and kept the work site so clean. They put away their tools in one location at the end of each day. Oh yeah, they also moved and replanted a bunch of plants for me, which are doing great - thanks guys! 5] We made some post construction changes, and he had no problem coming back and making those few minor changes for us. This is an overdue review of Renzo's amazing work! We had our landscape done back in August. He is punctual and always patient with our questions and concerns. He is also very flexible with any plan change and gave us great suggestions. He went beyond to provide many good ideas on lighting where we missed out at the design stage. We couldn't assemble 5 big planter boxes that we purchased online. It was not easy because we didn't realize there's a slope in our yard. Renzo stepped in and helped us out. These were all beyond his scope of work. Moreover, some materials and plants were out of stock during this challenging time and he helped collect the samples and find substitutes. The outcome is really stunning! I highly recommend Renzo and his team. They know what they are doing and you won't regret it! read more

Hi, first of all, we should have written this review long time ago. What can we say, we had a great experience with Renzo and his team. That says a lot as we have dealt with our share of contractors, having done house remodel. Our project involves landscape around a swimming pool. Though he is not the lowest cost, we like him because of the following 1) His ideas that come from his experiences 2) He is very considerate and timely reminded/consulted us before important steps 3) His foreman is very careful, led his hard working team getting things done with quality. Renzo and his crew did a great job for me. They always showed up on time and were polite & very respectful of the property. The job was finished on time and on budget without any issues. He took the design and suggested several changes based on his experience which worked out great. He always gave me updates & timing of the various phases and his crew cleaned up every day before leaving. I found him to be very honest and open which I greatly appreciated. A couple of months after the work was complete I asked him to stop by and do some minor repairs which he did without any issues (or charge!). Highly recommend! read more

Renzo and his team did a magnificent job for us. Ours was not a small undertaking new driveway, 800 square feet of pavers, total landscape makeover, new irrigation system, french drains, lighting and plant installation. I met with 6 contractors before I found Renzo and when I interviewed him I knew I wanted to work with him. He had practical solutions to several problem areas which the other contractors sort of glossed over. The glossing over always sends up a red flag for me because more often than not it ends up costing them more money then they thought - in turn costing me more money. Renzo started the day he said he would, his crew is competent and professional and the pavers were installed with artistry. We had several complicated cuts on steps and they are flawless. He finished the project when he said he would and he left our new yard looking amazing. You get what you pay for and my lowest bid was $9,000 less than Renzo's but I knew that given the enormous nature of the project and the amount of dirt removal and drainage problems that we faced I would have ended up paying extras along the way. Absolutely FIVE stars!! What a pleasure to find a COMPETENT Landscaping company who takes pride in their work and doesn't overcharge!! Our previous contractor had poorly installed two flagstone patios and some walkways - and we also noticed some really wet areas below a dry stack wall that needed to be addressed. We interviewed four potential landscaping firms to fix the problem areas. Renzo was the only one who suggested cutting back our lawn watering rather than digging extensive (and expensive) new drains below the wall. We hired him and had no regrets! He is courteous, knowledgeable and thoughtful. His crew is terrific, in fact they were so artistic with their stone cutting and placing that we expanded the job to add flagstones on a third patio (that was previously done in granite fines). Our project ended up starting a week late, which concerned me because we had scheduled an outdoor party based on his original start date. However Renzo had his crew work late during the week and all day Saturday so that we could still have our Sunday party. They clean up well after each day of work and Renzo was here every day - either working with the crew or at least stopping in to check on the quality. They really know what they are doing and we are happy to be a reference for them. We found them through Yelp and hopefully others will too! read more

These guys did a great job on sodding our front and back yards and completely reworking our old irrigation system. Renzo was very attentive and the crew always showed up on time and cleaned up at the end of the day. We are very happy. read more
