Walkway, drought tolerant landscaping, new lawn

I am absolutely thrilled with the results that Renzo and his team delivered. We extended our driveway, replaced the walkway to the front door, redid the stoop, tore out the old lawn and replaced it with 1/2 drought tolerant plants and 1/2 lawn. The team was extremely easy to work with and put in a lot of effort to make sure I was happy with what they were doing. They happily went along with changes to add a curve to the walkway and my desire to mix and match pavers. The care and detail they put into their work was obvious. And the price was very competitive - a great value. I would recommend them to any of my friends.

This company, headed by Renzo Rivera, was on our landscape designer's list of recommended landscapers. Our job started out as relatively small (around $9,000) and some of the other landscaping companies did not want to bid, because they were tied up doing larger commercial projects. Are we ever glad that they were- because Renzo and his team were FANTASTIC! Our job grew by nearly 100% as we decided to completely remove and replace an additional 5- 25'-30' trees that were not doing well (we originally planned to remove only 2), replace them with 12 new trees, and add drip irrigation to some areas that were not on the original plan. We originally had 81 sprinklers on our property, and all but 23 (which water our lawn) were replaced with drip irrigation. While on this subject, if you are applying for the Santa Clara Valley Water District "In-Line Drip Conversion" rebate be aware of their rules: "Only 1/2" in-line drip tubing irrigation systems with built-in, factory installed drip emitters qualify for a rebate. Non-qualifying forms of drip irrigation include: Point-source drip emitters/drippers (emitters that need to be manually attached to drip tubing and are not built-in), multi-outlet drippers, microspray, and bubblers." I was not aware of this restriction, and we had point-source drip emitters installed. I have no idea why this restriction exists. The drip emitters look to us to be more efficient Back to Total Landscape: Renzo and his team arrived on the date promised and every subsequent day for 9 working days, and did a phenomenal amount of hard work. Rather than cutting down our 7 trees and leaving stumps, they dug, chain-sawed and chopped out all 7 of the large stumps. Our irrigation system and valves were 90% completely rebuilt and replaced. 23 old sprinklers were replaced by Hunter MPR Rotator sprinkler bodies and nozzles. In all 88 new plants and 14 new trees were planted and the beds mulched. We have 3 40' redwoods beside our driveway which had filled the surrounding area with roots. Renzo's team painstakingly removed the roots and replanted the area. Renzo's team was great! At the end of every working day his men neatly stacked all their tools in their wheelbarrows and swept off any sidewalk areas that needed it. We wanted to install low voltage lighting, and Renzo recommended a Florida company called "Volt Lighting" (voltlighting.com). We went on their website and ordered 9 of their brass bronze "Max Spread" 24" stem lights(3W), and 5 "Fat Boy" spotlights (5W and 7W for larger trees), and are thrilled with the quality and appearance. Our ground feels like concrete when you try to dig in it due to compaction and roots, and we elected to have Renzo's team install the 14 lights. Subsequent to our project we decided to order and install 3 more, which I did myself- and I sure appreciated how hard it is to dig a 10" hole in our soil to install the lamp spikes! Total Landscape offers a 1 year warranty on plants, and we have already had 6-7 replaced which were not doing well- no questions asked. Renzo made some substitutions on our original plant list due to availability and suitability to each area, and we are very happy with the results. We had a very uneven brick sidewalk at the side of our garage due to tree roots pushing up bricks. It needed a lot of work to make it level again. Renzo at one point thought that he would relocate some sprinkler pipes under the sidewalk, and had the bricks taken up. When that strategy proved to not be the best answer, Renzo's team completely rebuilt the sidewalk, leveling it and pouring concrete edging. This was an unexpected bonus! We liked the mulch that Renzo provided and wanted to buy some more ourselves to cover a few additional areas, but the nursery that supplied it was out of stock. Renzo and his team came by yesterday to repair a broken sprinkler and install some additional dip heads, and surprised us by bringing a large amount of matching redwood small bark mulch which he had sourced from a different supplier- for free. His men installed it on our garden for no charge, and we are extremely delighted for this. I could say more, but you get the picture- Total Landscape is a "Can-do, will-do" company that is extremely customer-focused, easy to deal with, flexible, and professional. And Renzo knows his plants and trees! You couldn't do better.

We recently hired Total Landscape to completely remodel our front and backyard, and to replace some fencing. We chose Total Landscape because Renzo gave us a competitive quote, and because we were impressed with his reviews on Yelp. We are so glad we went with Total Landscape. Renzo and team absolutely deserve their 5 star reviews! Renzo readily accommodated small adjustments along the way, charging fairly for some additions which were not specified in the contract. His crew is very hard-working, meticulous, and it's obvious that they take great pride in their work. Their workmanship was excellent. We also appreciated that they always cleaned up at the end of the day. Overall, we are extremely happy with the results, and will happily recommend Total Landscape to anyone considering a landscaping project.

Renzo is great to work with and his team is hard working, professional and tidy. They helped with my backyard project and finished it in two weeks. The end result is amazing and Renzo helped us get us the look we wanted.

We hired Renzo and his team to work on part of our front porch, driveway, and the entire backyard. He was referred by our landscape architect, who has worked with him previously. We also interviewed several other contractors. We found Renzo most responsive, with very detailed and reasonable quote. He also patiently explained to us the pros and cons of different construction methods and materials, so we could make informed decisions. Once the project started, Renzo gave us a detailed schedule, and his team were very professional. They completed the project on time. Any changes in their schedule due to other reasons such as weather or material lead time were well communicated. Renzo was also flexible and accommodated additional work that we requested. There were times when we needed to make design changes, and Renzo really provided us useful information and great ideas, from wood material, paver pattern to plant selection. Overall it was pleasant working with Renzo and his team, and we were very happy with the result. They really take pride in their work.

I hired Renzo and his team to build our front, back and side yard from scratch. I had to wait a good 6 months to start the project with him and boy am I glad I waited for him and didn't go with someone else!! Reason why I hired him (besides the obvious 5 star reviews): - Of all the people I interviewed for the job who all had 5 star reviews on Yelp, he was the only one who asked a lot of questions / made detailed comments about my landscape design when we first met. He immediately came off as very modest yet extremely knowledgeable person who knew his stuff. - I also learned that he is frequently recommended by reputable landscape designers. In fact, one of the landscape designers I know who is very capable and who used to work for a large landscape design firm (that did the landscaping for Santana Row) had also hired him for her backyard and was very satisfied with his work. Our project took about 3 months to complete. And throughout the process, Renzo and his team proved that they are a GOLD STANDARD for a contractor - knowledgeable, competent, detail oriented, flexible, patient, very communicative, professional, courteous, honest and pleasant to deal with (I chose each word very carefully based on my experience). And his prices were also very reasonable. I loved working with Renzo and all of his team members, these are just genuinely competent and pleasant people that you feel lucky to have met. All the consistent 5 star reviews here are entirely true and I'm not sure I can add much more. Please stop looking around and hire this team, you will be lucky to have worked with them. I've received so many compliments from my neighbors (and strangers) and believe Renzo has already gotten a few new jobs in my neighborhood!

Rarely have I been surprised and delighted by a contractor's work on a project. Usually there is always some detail out of place or some degree of buyers remorse. I'm happy to say that Renzo and his team did it! I cannot say enough good things about them. The quality of their work is top notch. They care about getting the small details right, even if it means tearing up a section of pavers and relaying them to fix a mistake. He was constantly communicating with me regarding the project to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. Renzo really knows his stuff and great insight into the project, making great suggestions of where it could be improved without trying to inflate the scope of the work. After they left, I noticed they had even fixed one of the posts on my house that had been loose for years. That was just the icing on the cake for me.

    New front porch and walkway

Renzo and his team are the absolute best. They are the whole package: clean, communicative, and they deliver quality work on time. Our project encompassed the front, side AND back yard and included hardscape and landscaping. It was a huge project. First of all, we interviewed quite a few landscape contractors and right from the start, Renzo was the most accommodating and frankly, the most honest about what could or couldn't be done. His calm demeanor and informed suggestions, in addition to his studied referral to the design documents, were reassuring and convinced me and my husband that his company was the one to use. Second of all, when his team first showed up at the house, on time and ready to go, they were polite and organized. Every morning, Renzo would go through the plan with them for the day and they would work consistently until quitting time. They were kind and considerate. And every evening, before they left for the day, they would clean up their equipment, put away their tools, and stack all their stuff before they left. Their cleanliness was amazing. Additionally, they were extra careful of our safety during the construction. An example? After they took out the step to the back door, the step up was pretty steep. They built a ramp of dirt so that we could step up with ease. Unasked for but so considerate! Third, lines of communication between Renzo and his team and between us and Renzo were open at all times. Of course, we hit a few snags and some changes in the plan along the way. Everything was handled professionally and with the highest quality. If Renzo's guys couldn't do it, Renzo knew someone who could. In fact, there were some design changes that Renzo and his team suggested that were spot on (ie the steps up to the pool patio). They were very open to what we wanted to change and what we didn't. That being said, nothing comes for free and we did have to pay for the changes we implemented. But honestly, it was worth the cost. Fourth, Renzo and his team at Total Landscape finished their part of the work in the time frame that they promised. The only thing that prevented them from full completion was that our project ended end of December and there wasn't a single nursery in the area that had enough plants for the plan. Despite that, Renzo kept in touch and two months later when the plants were available at the nursery, he ordered what we needed and then accompanied us to the wholesale nursery to supplement our plant list and allow us to choose what we wanted! The end result was magnificent and honestly, everyone who sees the change in our backyard says it looks better than most resorts. If you have the opportunity to work with Renzo and the team at Total Landscape, you should go for it. Believe me, you won't regret it!

a pathway leading to a house at night

We hired Total Landscape for our front and backyard landscape project and it has done for two weeks. We have gotten many complements from neighbors about it. Even though we had to wait for many months to start our project, and we had to delay two months to avoid hottest time, the waiting time is totally worthy, and this is our right choice for sure. We highly recommend Total Landscape, and the reason are as following: 1. they focus on your project and Renzon replies your message immediately. We had a horrible experience before with a contractor who had several projects at the same time, and never gotten our message response. 2. Renzo is very easy to work with and flexible with your any changes even in the middle of the project 3. The workers are hard working and respecting your property. They cleanup every day before leaving 4. Renzo is very honest and good communication. He will let you know what is better solution for you and not for him. For example, we had a big area in backyard where we might build ADU in the future, and we can't make decision how to do it now. Renzo gave his suggestion with lowest costs which won't waste much money if we build ADU later. 5. Renzo also is responsible for what he promised. The project got completed in time. We noticed him that a few plants dead after the project is done for a while, and he called me back next day to tell me he will order the new ones for us. Therefore, it's a very happy experience to work with Total Landscape, and I already recommended my neighbors and will definitely choose them for my next landscape project in the future too.

    Our new backyard!!!

We recently hired Renzo's team for a complete front and backyard redo!!! Our grass had completely died in both yards and they were both a huge mess... We had new front and back lawns installed, irrigation and plants added to sides of all yards and pavers put in the patio and paths in the back. We even added large planting beds in the back with their own irrigation! It was a very extensive job and they did it fast and very efficiently with amazing results! I have to say he is a miracle worker!!!! The team was hard working, polite, and cleaned up at the end of the day... they even finished the job very close to the date he first suggested, even though we added several new tasks along the way!! I would definitely recommend working with this company on any size job! You will be thrilled with the results!!

Again, with much Prayers for God's Guidance, Directions we contacted for 3 Bids. One company with the initials of SL on Yelp great reviews was not a pleasant experience for us. They wanted Photos before they would even consider to bid. After much stress I did the photos, took the measurements as requested. I didn't expect them to come out to bid but they did and their bid was very high. I kept on praying and D&I Landscaping appeared and had great Yelp reviews. My initial reaction was Alyssa Torres was my first contact very personable and then we booked for Luis Blanco to come out to access our needs. No request for measurements or photos at all. Our job was easier only because my hubby knew what he wanted to have done and gave them his Vision and with their advice and help we tweaked a few things. Pavers is not an easy job especially when there's already Pavers installed, the guy I watched him and he was so methodical and kept placing Pavers down until he felt that he got the flow down and it was an amazing and challenging job but he did very well in my opinion. What we Love about D&I , is one of the owners Irving and their Designer Luis came over to meet with us. D&I doesn't charge for a Designer as some other companies do its part of their services. Irving, David, Luis and Alyssa and the entire Crew are so professional again this company was very Honest, Reputable, Hardworking and most of all they listen to our needs. One time our water spigot started leaking or spouting and we have this Project Group Text that they set up for us, all we do is text and within a few minutes David one of the owners showed up and turned it off while we were gone. They installed a water spigot that is easy for us to reach. They finished our Irrigation system along with installing a Rain Bird timer. It's hard to find a good honest company with Integrity but this company has it. Remember the company with the Initials SL think of S = a hard rock. Well... we had 3 bids which included backyard and front yard. When I called SL company and explained change of plans not doing the backyard she said oh, well that changes your front yard quote by 8 - 10% I was livid are you kidding me? No, it changes your price, the Lord quickly had me shut the door on this company bad feelings from the time I contacted them had to do measurements and photos. When the guy showed up,from SL, I told him you're young but you are passing on small jobs because you don't have time, let me tell you something passing on small job could lead you to something bigger, he was cordial and what was funny was after I went into the house he took measurements. When during our conversation I said how can you bid without taking measurements he replied because I've been doing this a long time really you're not even 40 Years old. D&I I contacted them to not include our backyard sent me a new quote penny for penny they just took off the back yard quote the front yard stayed the same. Honesty and Integrity goes a long way plus they don't charge us for a Porta Potty as SL did on our quote $250 for a Porta Potty folks she said unless you want the crew into your house to potty. I did let our Painters use our restroom which is fine they're in our house anyway and they were so professional and kind to us. To each its own. Looking for good Quality Work, a company with Honesty, Interity and a great ideas on your Landscaping this is the company and we had Carpenter Bees in one of our Post. David one of the owners worked really hard into the dark repairing it and he also placed the boulders back onto our neighbors lot for them. Irving drops by to check on the progress of our project. Who does all of these extras? D&I Landscaping give them a call for a quote no job too big or small for them. One of our neighbors hired them shortly after seeing them here at our house for over a week. They planted some really gorgeous flowers and shrubs, and set up irrigation so it's super low maintenance. The neighbors have commented that they love how the front lawn looks now! D&I are very communicative, kind, and give a fresh perspective to things. For example, I was thinking about redoing my backyard which I thought was stamped concrete. D&I inspected it and told me they are real flagstone and it's expensive and not worth replacing. I really appreciated that they weren't trying to squeeze every last penny out of us. Another very happy customer of South Bay Design and Landscaping…read more We had South Bay out to do a full demolition of the existing "landscaping" from when we bought our house and the installation of an entirely new plan from our landscape designer (check out Dawn Engel- she's great!), which included a patio space, a pergola, driveway extensions, hogwire fence, raised planter beds, and a side gate added to our existing fence. These guys do not mess around. Demolition went insanely quickly, and our property was kept neat and tidy the entire time. We never once saw dirt tracked anywhere by the crew, which we can't say the same for any of the other contractors we've worked with (and we're actually quite happy with some of them!), and which becomes even more insane to think about when you consider the nature of landscaping work. Installation went as smoothly as South Bay possibly could have made it. Any time we ran into the occasional hiccup, as happens with all nontrivial projects, Matt, Danny, and Marcus offered thoughtful suggestions and made sure to confirm exactly what we wanted before proceeding. (We had either or both of Matt and Danny on-site most days of our project, and interacted with Marcus via email.) We were delayed a smidge by some heavy rain, but the crew worked through all but the worst of it (talking "if you step in that mud, you're going to lose a boot" type of rain). Partway through the install, we discovered that the previous landscapers had managed to make the L-shaped pathway leading from our driveway to our front door square with nothing- which wasn't easily noticed until we had the planter beds in and hogwire fence line chalked out. (South Bay had laid those out properly square to the driveway and house, as per our plan.) Matt, Danny, and crew were thankfully able to accommodate our request to fix our pathway up by picking up each segment and pushing the out-of-square part over by 4-6 inches; this added about a week of extra time to our project, mostly due to the fact that not all of the pavers could be reused, and that the pavers had actually been discontinued (!). The guys worked around this by sourcing very similar pavers in a different size, and basically cutting and grinding them to match our existing pavers. Post-install, the only way you'd know there are two different pavers in our pathway is if you'd seen it being taken apart and rebuilt. Plants, irrigation, and lighting all went in straightforwardly after the hardscaping work was finished, and Danny gave us a complete walkthrough of all our new outdoor systems. It's been about a week since our project was completed; the plants are all thriving, and we're still ecstatic about our new yards (and so are our neighbors!). In short: we had a fantastic experience working with South Bay Design and Landscaping for our landscaping project. They take pride in doing a quality job, and it shows in everything from demolition to day-to-day jobsite management to the finished project. If you're looking for landscapers, these are your guys. (Special thanks to Matt and Danny for graciously handling my incessant "are you sure you didn't forget about such-and-such little detail?" questions and never once forgetting about any of the details, and also to Sergio for spending basically an entire Saturday morning troubleshooting what ultimately turned out to be a manufacturing issue with our pergola.)
