I ate here a lot while staying in town. It amazed me that one server ran the entire room on his own. He did it alone and he did it very well. He always remembered us and that we wanted his amazing version of the Michelada . The food was consistent, hot and tasty too. I almost always had the Carnitas because they were so dang good. Great service and Great food gets me every time. I am a huge Fan.

I'm a trucker and found this place just next to the Flying J. I was there at about 4:30 pm. I was seated promptly. My order was taken and while I waited, more patrons were showing up. Due to Covid, capacity was reduced and a certain wait was in store. My food was prepped after a bit of a wait. It was the Chile Colorado plate. The meat was tender with the sauce getting a solid "7" on a 1-10 scale. Rice and beans were standard issue. I had a Coke out of the fountain because they didn't have the bottled Mexican Coke. Three torts were supplied and were not hand made. The waitresses were quite busy and the extra napkins and salt I requested never showed up..no worries though, I understood they can only do so much with limited staff. It is something that needs to be addressed by management. Overall not bad for the price and limited staff.

At first walking in the stench was kinda bad, after I got passed that we ordered the combination plates.. tacos, chilli relleno ,rice and beans .. the other person with me ordered a taco, tostada , enchilada .. rice and beans .. the food came out quickly and hot .. plate will burn you hot .. but that being said the place has great food!! Also ordered the huckleberry margarita.. very tasty . Staff is very friendly and attentive. Order was right without mistakes .. definitely will come back.. hopefully the owner can resolve the smell when walking In.

I don't like leaving reviews like this. But this is the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The enchiladas came out in 3 minutes. Almost scary how fast them came out. No flavor at all. Chicken was dry and the michelada was awful as well. They need help on the food.

I'm actually pretty sad to be leaving this review. Came in last night around 5:30 or so, and ordered a to-go order of two burritos. One super with steak, and one macho with chicken. Maybe the employee will remember me? I am several months pregnant, and have been craving the Macho burrito I've always gotten like crazy. Last night I ate half of it, and found these rubber leaf pieces in my burrito. Being that I've been going crazy about wanting this burrito , I ignored it.. for lunch today I'm eating the rest, and found much bigger pieces of the same rubber leaf thing. Now I'm worried about how much rubber I ate.. I'm sad to say I will not be returning. I have 4 other Mexican restaurants closer to my home. I always prefer this restaurant.. ***to the comment, it was not a bay leaf or any seasoning. That would be understandable. It was rubber or plastic. When you felt it, it was clearly rubber. I know a picture of a rubber leaf may look like seasoning. But it was not at all.

Tonight on our second visit which was even better then the first. I really wanted to take time and look the menu over well before making my choice. But my fellas were hungry and ready to order as soon as we were seated, wow. I guess I should have hung onto a menu after we ordered but I did not think of that. So I ordered the first thing on the menu that had grabbed my attention, the Steak Fajitas. I had never ordered fajitas before and I thought it would be fun to get that sizzlin plate brought to me. And indeed it was. Jared ordered the Frito Burrito which is deep fried. He devoured it. We all super duper savor the flavor of the Salsa here at Toro Viejo! Hubby also chose a burrito, the Macho, which with he was well pleased.

When we walked in, we were greeted and sat immediately at a booth. It wasn't too busy at all and ambiance was fairly quiet. Karen was our server and welcomed us in and took our drink order and brought us chips and salsa right away. I ordered a classic Shirley Temple and it was notstalgically good. As my lunch entree, I ordered the Camarones Mexicanos. It arrived hot and full of flavor. I considered the shrimp as more medium sized and of adequate quantity. The mushrooms soaked up the flavor of the onions and peppers and I enjoyed how my rice was cheesy with melted cheddar Jack. For dessert, I went with the classic flan. It was a dense piece of vanilla custard with great texture and form. There was no strawberry sauce so it must be seasonal thing, but it had caramel sugar sauce that was traditional to flan. The other two people I was with, bothered ordered lunch combos and both were satisfied with their choices. Karen was a great server--friendly, attentive, and even refilled drinks without being asked. Overall, Rancho Viejo is a great sit-down spot for authentic Mexican food that's a notch above average and much better than many of the fast food Mexican joints around town.

But pay no heed and do yourself a favor and just go eat here. The staff is the sweetest. We are a vegetarian party so we ended up with veggie burrito, tostada salad, tacos, fries, and Horchata. These guys don't skimp on ingredients. I asked for extra rice and they didn't charge me. Horchata was perfection. Try their salsas--both Roja and verde which they keep in the drinks fridge. Chips and a spicy salsa are complimentary. The Enchiladas come with a red or green sauce, so I chose the green. It had a great flavor and the enchiladas had plenty of cheese. However, the inside was lukewarm and the cheese was not melted. You could still see the shreds. I took them home for another meal. As to the tacos, they fry their handmade corn tortillas and they have a good flavor. Unfortunately the ground beef has little to no flavor. Luckily I had salsa left over and used it to spice them up. They come with plenty of shredded lettuce, diced onions, and two types of shredded cheese. They have 8 tables and they had a steady stream of customers for both to go orders and dine in. The restaurant is clean and average noise level.

UPDATE see my original review below. I just read through all…read morethe comments and actually saw some after I wrote my review saying the same thing customer saying the same thing about the same food and how is bland and it apparently this restaurant does nothing about these reviews and doesn't listen to us as customers. I have absolutely no confidence that this restaurant is gonna survive. I would bet you that they're operating on a negative profit margin every month right now. And even with that they just still don't get it that they have to change their food and up their game. It looks like what other people are saying on here is that their sauces are not authentically ground from the peppers and everything that normally people do when they make Mexican food. That the meat is horrible. That they are not seasoning it so whoever's doing the cooking obviously is not somebody that knows how to cook and taste their own food. How can you make chicken like that for a burrito for crying out loud this is all you do in life is put chicken and burritos and tacos but you don't ever taste the meat? You can't tell that it's like not juicy? It has no flavor? It taste like you froze it and then microwaved it or put it in a crockpot without flavor? I just don't get it. You can see my original review below. And just like I said before it looks like this restaurant does not ever read the reviews because what you will see is that this review of mine will be on here for years and they'll never be any response online openly from the manager to address this issue. I'm on a road trip from California so I have Mexican food all the time there and so I decided to have a chicken burrito from this place. I ordered takeout and if they said, do you want sour cream on it I said yes I just said go ahead and put everything on it. I just want a good chicken burrito so I got this chicken burrito inside of this package and the tortilla was soggy and it was not like a grilled tortilla like toasty. The chicken meat inside of it was absolutely dry, overcooked, and really bland. It almost tasted like somebody had thrown it in a crockpot for eight hours and left it cause it just soaked all the fat out of it. It wasn't tender or anything. I was strongly suggest that that would be a number one priority at this restaurant is to not serve that kind of chicken meat. It's not good in any way shape or form. The only kind of chicken meat you should be serving out that chicken in the burritos is fried grilled in your kitchen right before right when you make the burrito and then cut it up and put it in the burrito and it needs to be juicy and not overcooked which means that you cannot freeze the chicken. Now that I think about it, it taste like the chicken was previously frozen, which took some moisture out of it and then it was crockpot ted which took the rest of the fat out of it, and then they served it in the burrito. It failed in all the categories, and I don't understand that if somebody's gonna put this much money into a restaurant why they would serve something like that. On my road trip I actually had a burrito from that gas station called Maverick or Mavic. The burrito at that place was superior than the one I got from this place. It should not be that way and I'm not saying this to be mean I'm being very honest about it with a ton of experience growing up in California with Mexican food all the time. So what I'm saying is I also noticed that I pay a little over $15 for this burrito. Isn't this Montana? Why am I paying above California prices for this burrito? I get the same level of burrito and grilled meat flavorful and good for $13 and something change in California in an expensive city. So tonight, I was very disappointed. I got a burrito that had meat in it that was not prepared right that was bland in a soggy tortilla where it was like pulled chicken and it was barely edible. On top of everything I was overcharged. Let me think? In California people that would work in that restaurant would have medical benefits and get paid a minimum of $20 an hour. With that taking into account, the burrito is about $13.50 in California and it was prepared better. Is there some reason why this burrito was over $15? I was really shocked and I just don't understand it. I would never come back to this place again if I lived here. These are just my opinions and I'm being truthful and I'm not saying this. I'm not your competitor. I'm just somebody traveling through that has experiencing this type of food their whole life. There is much better out there and you gotta step up your game or you're gonna wind up going out of business like a lot of restaurants.
