We are well travelled and I am from Tucson, Arizona by what I thought was the best Mexican American food there was. However, after trying all the Mexican food restaurants in this area and have found the real best - Toro Viejo. They have real enchiladas and great chimichangas - our favs! Parking is generous as are the sizes of the drinks. When you are there, please go across the Pleasant View strip mall and visit Treasure Towne. Service was an odd assortment of teenagers that were pleasant enough, if not a little distracted with what appears to be age appropriate frivolity and shenanigans with friends in booths near ours. The food was responsible for the least enjoyable eating experience I've had in the last decade, for Mexican food, maybe ever. The scarcity of meat in both the enchiladas and the burrito makes me suspicious of some sort of pollo shortage, and it may be coinciding with a shortage beans and rice, as the two tablespoon portion of both left us wanting, just not wanting more of those items, as they were also inadequate. They must have cheap drinks to retain business, unfortunately we were not imbibing, and even if we were, I believe the experience would be sobering. This would all be well and good if it was a place you could get a quick sloppy bite to eat that came with a shockingly low price tag, but it's priced the same as rancho viejo or any other Mexican restaurant that offers charming wait staff, flavorful food, and solid portions. If their drinks are insanely cheap (and I didn't check) then all this makes sense and you can disregard the novel I've written. read more

I ate here a lot while staying in town. It amazed me that one server ran the entire room on his own. He did it alone and he did it very well. He always remembered us and that we wanted his amazing version of the Michelada . The food was consistent, hot and tasty too. I almost always had the Carnitas because they were so dang good. I'm a trucker and found this place just next to the Flying J. I was there at about 4:30 pm. I was seated promptly. My order was taken and while I waited, more patrons were showing up. Due to Covid, capacity was reduced and a certain wait was in store. My food was prepped after a bit of a wait. It was the Chile Colorado plate. The meat was tender with the sauce getting a solid "7" on a 1-10 scale. Rice and beans were standard issue. I had a Coke out of the fountain because they didn't have the bottled Mexican Coke. Three torts were supplied and were not hand made. The waitresses were quite busy and the extra napkins and salt I requested never showed up..no worries though, I understood they can only do so much with limited staff. It is something that needs to be addressed by management. Overall not bad for the price and limited staff. read more

At first walking in the stench was kinda bad, after I got passed that we ordered the combination plates.. tacos, chilli relleno ,rice and beans .. the other person with me ordered a taco, tostada , enchilada .. rice and beans .. the food came out quickly and hot .. plate will burn you hot .. but that being said the place has great food!! The waiter Ruben was very nice. The food was HORRIBLE!!! I ordered a two item combination plate and the Chili Relleno was flat as a pancake, it was like they fried it in a pan full of grease and didn't drain it, there was no cheese inside, if there was it melted in the frying, it was the size of, maybe a medium sized jalapeño cut in half. The batter just soaked up the oil and they melted the cheese on top and had NO YUMMY SAUCE on it!!! Who does that? I went there today with my good friend for lunch. I called when I got home and spoke with a very rude young woman. She said their Chili Rellenos are one of their best dishes. Apparently they don't know how to make it properly We meet once a month at different restaurants. I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. I will be recommending a delicious Mexican restaurant, called Las Chevales, they're located in Coeur D'Alene on 95. The staff, all of the ones there, are friendly and know the items on the menu! The restaurant was full for a week night and the ambience was good, although the recorded music was rather loud. The staff was cheerful and efficient. First off, the minute we came inside, the smell of raw sewage was overwhelming. I've smelled it in the bathroom there before, but now the entire restaurant smells like it. Why did we stay, you ask? Because we've been eating here for over 20 years and it's so sad to admit what it's turned into. Bottom line is everything was terrible: chips were cold and stale, salsa was tasteless, Michelada was watery, the Frito burrito was soggy, chewy, limp, and hardly had any filling, the steak in the fajita burrito was nothing but fat. I'm actually pretty sad to be leaving this review. Came in last night around 5:30 or so, and ordered a to-go order of two burritos. One super with steak, and one macho with chicken. But my fellas were hungry and ready to order as soon as we were seated, wow. I guess I should have hung onto a menu after we ordered but I did not think of that. So I ordered the first thing on the menu that had grabbed my attention, the Steak Fajitas. I had never ordered fajitas before and I thought it would be fun to get that sizzlin plate brought to me. Stereotypical Mexican kitchen decor, plaster burrows and creepy clown designs straight from street vendors in Tijuana, beer signs and latin scenery mural paintings provide that "im eating mexican food in idaho" vibe. This was our second time in here. We decided to sit at the bar, ordered two margaritas. The bartender (Devon) was more than accommodating. I wasn't sure what to order, and he strongly suggested the grilled chicken and shrimp fajitas. He let me know this was the owner's specialty. , and the owner just happened be working in the kitchen at that time. So glad I did! It was above my expectations & so was the service! We love this restaurant and the Hayden on also. We live in the are so we frequently go to both. Food is always very tasty. Full of flavor and spices. We've NEVER had a bad meal here. I ordered a Michelada and started to watch a special about Gayle Sayers, who had passed away earlier in the day. The "michelada" was pathetic, it had no tajin on the rim and was very bland. Then the bartender goes and changes the channel from the show i am watching (i am the only customer in the bar) to a political black lives matter show and then leaves. I have been a long time patron here, staff has always been friendly, I have always enjoyed the food. This past weekend there was a bit of a situation, there was a small staple in my food. The hostess was very apologetic and explained what could have happened. They did compensate for that meal, which I appreciated it. Terrible! we found shards of ceramic glass in one of our nacho dishes from our take-out order. After calling in, the manager (cook??) was rude and accused us of trying to take advantage of the restaurant even though we've been going there for years. Four of my colleagues witnessed the occurrence and would vouch for the incident but the cook/manager had no interest in considering they might bear some responsibility. We LOVE this place! The best plate they make is their "Maria Special". It's like chicken and shrimp fajitas but you can have them add their homemade mole sauce. Their sauce is very light, rich, and not chocolatey or sweet like most other mole. The Restaurant is family owned and operated and they go out of their way to make each guest feel like family! We ordered steak fajitas on the lunch for $10.95 the portion of meat was underwhelming the beans and rice served on the hot fajita plate makes no sense for them to be burning. The meat was super funky the secret sauce needs to be changed it was terrible. The rice and beans were good no complaints the side dish of pico, guacamole, cheese, lettuce,etc. Were good only complaint my husband was given a way larger portion than I was. Thankfully he gave me his guacamole. Salsa delivery is weird untimely and unsanitary. First your given a shallow dish to share then the refills after you ask come super fast like impossibly fast...the reason....they are pre- dished into these shallow dishes to allow the flies to defecate in them. Yes I had to kill a little flying bug while I was here. Drink refills came at a good rate from the helper who also cleared the tables we were one of three tables in the building 80% of our visit we rarely saw our waitress and she was unconcerned about our presence. However when she was at our table she was friendly. I suggested to the helper to put salsa un a pitcher to give salsa refills and save on dishes I did not mention the bugs as that is common sense. He said nope it's better this way. Well I personally live in Texas and can tell you 99% of salsa refills are done via a pourable container whether personal use at table or large sealed container brought to the table. It says something about a place when you ask a waitress for something twice and then she proceeds to ignore it both times. That something is very simple, avoid this place like the plague since the staff makes it very clear that they do not care about the customers or doing their jobs properly. We waited a few months to try this place and sadly have to say it was NOT worth the wait. We ordered steak street tacos and they were filled with more onion than meat and the shells had burnt bits on them and were very greasy. The little meat that was in the taco was unevenly cooked, some red and raw and other pieces overdone. The meat was also very bland. The cook made a comment that we took meat out of the tacos instead of taking accountability for the lack in quality of the food served by them.
