Was visiting the Waco area and saw the reviews for Torchy's and decided to give it a try. Unbelievably flavorful food and very helpful and attentive staff. The cook came out to make sure everything we had was done right and that we were satisfied, also she told us her family had 5 generations invested in the business. The tacos were excellent. We split a fried avo and a fried chicken. BUT to wait 45 mins for 2 tacos is insanity. They said it was due to catering coming out of the kitchen, but I believe that the in house customers should come before catering. We stared with chips and queso. The cheesy dip was served hot with a bit of spice and a ton of flavor!.. so good we brought the left overs with us! She ordered the chicken fajita taco, which came fully loaded and packed with flavor. I ordered the Baja Shrimp and Democrat taco. Both had so much flavor, and such fresh ingredients. Ordered the chicken quesadillas, independent (portabella tacos), mr orange (blackened salmon), brushfire (jerk chicken), chicken fajita, Tipsy chicken. Imbibed: Corona, lone star canned beer and a Mexican mineral water. My FIL thought his mr orange was so tasty and that my elote corn was good as well. The elote tasted too overwhelming with spicy and seasoning that it was hard to tell I was eating corn at all. My independent portabella was admittedly too breaded for my liking. My husband devoured and inhaled his quesadilla and his 3 chicken tacos. Everyone enjoyed their foods loads except for me, was not impressed or elated with my meal. Compared to Fort Worth and Katy. Salsa : was lucky to get a teaspoon in a plastic cup. Service: pleasant - staff did stand around behind bar eating to hand to mouth and not washing hands and constantly lowering mask. We were driving through Waco and decided to stop for lunch and to tour the Magnolia Silos. It was crowded and there was construction everywhere and since we were hauling a trailer it was hard to get around the narrow streets. We spotted Torchy's and since the parking lot was large, we decided to stop there. I'm so glad we did! They have some unique specialty tacos and they are DELICIOUS! I had the green chili pork and the barbacoa. My daughter had the street corn and the mexican rice as sides. The chips and queso was very good. I had a delicious margarita to wash it down...lol. We sat outside on their picnic tables. I love the vibe of their outdoor eating area. Although it was crowded, service was quick and the food came out hot. I will stop by again next time I pass through Waco. There are so many unique tacos to choose from and I'd like to try a few more. read more

The Mr. Orange taco had delicious salmon that was cooked perfectly and the filet was surprisingly large for the price and perfectly moist. 2. The Chipotle sauce, cilantro ranch, and salsas were delicious and a great addition to the tacos. Cons 1. There was a horrible smell as you walk into the restaurant coming from the trash area that almost made me turn around. 2. There was no one helping to enforce social distancing for the order line and it was in a crowded and confined space. 3. The table we chose was marked that it had been cleaned and was ready to be seated but there were food remains and liquid on it and the employee who was standing by the cleaning supplies was talking on her phone and didn't seem to care that I was trying to clean the table before sitting down and made no effort to help. Customer service was awfully near perfect which is hard to find in a little college restaurant hotspot. We indulged ourselves in the Baja shrimp tacos, green Chile pork, trailer park, and fajita chicken and steak. I was a bit disappointed in the steak fajita taco, I thought the steak was a bit over cooked and dry but the flavors from the rest of the taco were great. While at the bar I also had the Sucker Punch cocktail. If you like a sweeter cocktail this would be perfect for you. Overall excellent visit! Next time we will have to order from the counter so we can scan our rewards app. We weren't able to do that from the bar. I can't wait to return! read more

I used to work at this location & you can tell it's gone more downhill than when I worked there. First time coming for food since I quit & we received not only our queso & chips that were stale & didn't taste like what it used to, but a dead fly in our Togo bag. I worked expo by myself & never had any dead bugs in my orders. They weren't busy at all either, I'd be more understanding with mistakes under pressure being in that position, but this was sloppy. There's a pretty good size menu of tacos to select from, from veggie to meat lovers and all ranges of spice level. They've got a monthly rotation of specials, too. I know this is a growing trend in some restaurants now when you order and pay at the counter as they have you sign the check it also has a line for a tip. I added a tip of 20%, but felt later that I should put zero until the server earns the tip. These are the four tacos we ordered and how we liked them in order: 1 Green Chili 2 Democrat barbacoa meat 3 Baja Shrimp 4 Trailer Park battered chicken Also ordered the guacamole and chips, not sure how freshly made the guacamole is, but it is not old. I'm a longtime fan of Torchy's and I'm glad that the outlet here in Waco is on par with the ones in Austin. Stopped in today on the way to the Dr Pepper museum and was glad I did. Service was fast and friendly, and the only flaw was that one of the tacos (which tasted roughly the same as in Austin) was too watery. Well, I guess that would be egg-y. Some people like the eggs in their tacos runny. I'm OK with that but it can't be so gosh-darned close to raw that I feel like I'm dicing with the salmonella gods! Definitely worth a visit if you're passing through. This place scores a 4 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. We dropped by this Torchy Tacos location after a visit at Magnolia Market. It was a walking distance from Magnolia Market. We made a beeline to the counter as soon as we walked I to the restaurant. Here is what I ordered -- brushfire which was a jerk chicken taco and a pork taco. The two tacos costed about $10. They tasted ok when I added additional orange sauce. That kicked the spice level up a bit. I'd still say they still needed more flavor. Plus, they were too small. Final verdict is a 3-star rating. I wish their tacos are a little bigger with a bit more seasoning. If I were hungry and happen to be close to a Torchy Tacos location, I would consider Torchy Tacos a dining optiion. This place came highly recommended by fellow Baylor parents, so I decided to try it. Coming from CA we have some seriously great mexican food and taquerias, so I was a bit skeptical. I ordered the green chili pork taco. It came with a generous amount of shredded pork(not the crispy, fried carnitas style pork I'm used to) on two corn tortillas, with green chilis, onion and a tiny bit of cheese. The pork was flavorful, but a bit salty. The green salsa that came with it was great. I did see many people enjoying the queso, which looked really good. I would say this place is "college good". Large portions for a reasonable price and decent tasting food. I could see my college son enjoying this place this fall when he is living here, but I doubt I would come back. read more

I've tried several of their tacos, but my new favorite is the Alabama Shake (fried catfish) on flour tortilla. The Alabama shake has: cornmeal crusted catfish, poblano slaw, cotija cheese, peppadew peppers, cilantro, and a lime wedge (squeeze that lime all over that fish!!) with avocado sauce. It's not spicy, it's just really flavorful. other tacos that are great: baja shrimp, the independent, trailer park (try it trashy!) in that order Other menu items I like: the queso is very good, and the lil nookies are good but really decadent. TIPS: 1. I don't like their corn tortillas, they are kinda raw-gritty, and mushy. So I recommend ordering flour tortillas only for your tacos. 2. I didn't like the street corn, so you might skip that. Order chips & guac instead! 3.
