After some deliberation and menu research, my local friend and I decided to visit Torch Bistro for a casual post-brewery dinner in Norfolk. We wanted to also visit The Birch -- a nationally ranked beer bar -- across the street, but they're closed on Sundays. Torch itself is artsy and welcoming, with a good amount of tables spread out in addition to the bar and patio areas. It feels open and kind of industrial too. I loved the vibe. The menu was even better. It was seriously hard to decide, but I ended up selecting the Yes We Can sandwich -- a 5-spice house-smoked brisket sandwich topped with cole slaw and a super fun barbecue root beer sauce. It was served on a fresh brioche bun. I loved my sandwich but had some serious food envy when my friend ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It came on a beautifully buttered piece of sourdough with avocado. You can bet I ordered one to go and ate that amazing sandwich for breakfast the next day! [I'm serious too. That really happened. It was delicious.] The beer list here is decent. It's not extraordinary but they do offer styles beyond domestics, so I can appreciate that. This was my first visit after a friend recommended coming here. We came for dinner before going to watch the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park. The girls shared the Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap, which had grilled chicken and was also finished on the grill. It came with house-made fries, which they also enjoyed. I had the Drunk Uncle, a burger consisting of Swiss cheese, Porter grilled onions, whisky mushrooms, a horseradish Mayo and bacon. It was a damn fine burger. Went to Torch! with coworkers for a holiday party during lunch. As it is a colder season and the holiday season, they may have been unusually quiet during the lunch hour however we appreciated as we had full reign over the dining room for our company lunch. I had the Drunk Uncle burger and the truffle and cheese fries. I really enjoyed the burger! I was a little nervous about the horsey-sauce so I asked for it on the side but when I go again, I want it all over everything! It was a great sauce! Not necessarily a horseradish but a sauce based on horseradish. (My fear was that it would be too intense) . The sauce was bomb is all im saying. The fries were okay - I could have done without the cheese. I will say that the burger was pretty large so I actually was able to take some of the burger and fries home. I warmed them up in the microwave and I think the cheese helped the fries! If I planned to eat the fries in one sitting, I'd go for fries sans the cheese sauce as it didnt have that much flavor and I didnt really think it added much to the side. The Chelsea area really is prime location for some pretty awesome drinking spots. Torch offers some of the local beers from the area as well as some pretty killer happy hour margarita specials. They also serve some pretty darn good burgers! I had the O'Reilly and was surprised by the blending of sweet flavors from the cranberry bacon relish, crunchy textures from the potato straws, and meaty goodness from the thick burger. Their Philly Eggroll is also nothing to sneeze at. The Old Bay cheese dip paired with the eggroll perfectly and pretty much anything else I dipped in there. They offer ample seating inside and have a nice outdoor area complete with games and a fire pit which really helped as the night got colder. We ended up spending about 3-4 hours here and my only regret is that I didn't get more food. read more

This is a little dated however on my latest visit to Torch it was a nice outside so we sat outside and enjoyed the evening and some beers. The place was probably 3/4 full. Had an app this time around and tried out the Smokey Egg Rolls. They consisted of smoked brisket, applewood ham and Swiss cheese packed inside an eggroll. It also comes with a house duck sauce. They were pretty good. For the entree I ordered the Olè Burger and my friend ordered a sandwich called the Godfather. The Olè Burger comes with Chorizo Chilis, Fritos, cheese, lettuce and tomato on a Brioche bun. Pretty good except mine was missing the Fritos and had bacon substituted. Not a real complaint though, you can never go wrong with bacon. My fries on the other hand, barely any. I was thinking their must be a potato famine going on. My friend said the Godfather was pretty good but kind of plain. The Godfather comes with salami, pepperoni, ham, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, roasted peppers, onions, fresh mozzarella, & vinaigrette on a toasted roll. Man, oh man. This place was good. Torch is a great place for some really nice dishes that are moderately priced. I ordered the shrimp po boy with the sweet potato fries as well as the pimento cheese balls. It was all seasoned really well, and the sauces for dipping the cheese balls as well as the sauce on the po boy were very good. I was impressed with the fresh ingredients like the cole slaw and shrimp on my sandwich. I just wish there were a little more shrimp. Their entire menu looks good, so I'll be visiting this establishment again. I love a good po boy, and this place did a great job on a southern classic. I'm not the biggest cheese ball fan but with the jalepeno peppers mixed in and the spicy dipping sauce, these babies had a kick that was enough to say "wow, that's spicy," but it wasn't too spicy. We order some appetizers and shared (roasted Brussels, pretzel bites, truffle fries, chicken wings, and fried lumpia). The roasted Brussels were pretty good i liked how they were seasoned, there were a couple folks in the group that liked them as well but thought the ends were a bit tough. The pretzel bites were AMAZING!! They came served with mustard as well as cheese sauce (not sure what's in it but i totally could have scooped it with my finger and ate it solo, LOL). They only had a 1/2 portion so they brought it out but did not charge me- i did not ask for that at all but thought it was very nice of them. Totally wish they had more. The friend lumpia was pretty good but i was not fan of the sauce that came with it. Stopped here today after attending the Stockley Garden Art Show. It was very nice all of the staff very friendly and attentive. Went to for lunch and waited a very long time for the appetizer.. when we finally received it there was a very long beard hair in the crab dip... the waitress just said it was disgusting and brought it back. Which I ordered my burger med well and it was so well done it was cracked in middle of the burger and everything Just seemed lower quality for the price everything is? First time eating here. I actually haven't been in the great state of Virginia since I was a young boy. Glad to have gone to this place. I had their Drunk Uncle Burger. It was a burger with bacon, Swiss cheese, horseradish, Porter mushrooms, and whiskey onions. I opted for my burger to be medium rare. This was an excellent burger. The horseradish was not overpowering and the combo of the mushrooms and onions gave this burger a nice arrangement of flavors. The cheese was melted and complemented the burger patty perfectly. The buns held the burger perfectly as well. It was served with some fries. The fries were delicious and crunchy. Nice amount of salt and I dipped them in ketchup. I washed down this delicious burger with a double IPA. This particular IPA was called Rip Rap Dipa. It had an interesting flavor to it. I liked that this particular DIPA was not overwhelming. I felt that the IBUs for this beer were a little bit lower than what I usually get from other DIPAs. It was a good beer to the point that I opted to get another pint. The service was pretty good. Our server was courteous and honest. She made our night very special. The cooks were very friendly and cooked our meals pretty well. We happened to be in this establishment with a considerably large group. Our server took care of us very efficiently even with splitting the check.
