The thing with pizza is that when it doesn't blow you away its still pretty good and this is the case with Tony's. I tried their fresh mozzarella slice and vodka grandma square. The crisp on the fresh mozzarella slice was a nice touch but I found that the slice had no flavor. Sauce was just ok. The vodka square was also kind of a let down as well. The vodka sauce was just ok and the dough on the grandma square had a buttery flavor which isn't something you typically find in NY slice. Ive been a Williamsburg native since 1988. Tony's has and still is a big staple in my family. Todays visit was quite uncomfortable and unpleasant. I've been in the hospitality and restaurant management business for over a decade, and calling guests pet names as they're simply trying to cast a quick to go order is something I wouldn't tolerate to keep a business rep shining. Once is fine. I shot him a dark look when he called me "sweety". I know he knew I wasn't with it cause his head recoiled back when I looked up at him. Words on the charming awning said it was established in 1950 which was part of the reason I picked it. Was dreaming about fresh pizza right out of the oven and this place did not disappoint. We got the sausage and pepperoni pizza and split it between three. The wait for the pizza wasn't too long, and we sat on the bench outside while we waited. As soon as we got the box, the aroma of pizza wafted up and I knew we were in for a good meal. The first thing I smelled was this sweetness that was intoxicating -- that came in the form of the tomato sauce and also the dough. I loved the balance of this sweeter tomato sauce with the umami of the pepperoni and the sausage, mellowed out but the pie. A bite was perfectly balanced. In fact, it's quite possible that my refusal to move away from Tony's is the sole reason my last relationship fell apart: HER: I wanna get a new place and move in together. ME: I don't wanna live anywhere that isn't across the street from Tony's. HER: You're saying a pizza place is more important to you than a 3+ year relationship? ME: I'm not saying it is, and I'm not saying it isn't. ...And scene. And let me tell you, Tony's makes some damn fine pizza for getting over a break up. Now the sign out front says "Tony's Pizza; Pasta, Seafood, Steaks, Hero's" but there certainly isn't any steaks or seafood, and you're not here to order pasta or hero's (although I'm sure they're great). After a discussion with a friend about where we were going eat, we decided on this place. Why? I'm not so sure anymore. The delivery was okay timing and the delivery man wished me a good night, thanks man, but when I opened the box expecting to see a glimmering beacon of light, it just brought me back to the sad realities. Moved to Long Island from Queens and all I can say is when you leave the boroughs the one thing you'll miss is good pizza. I don't quite get why they can't make good pizza on the island. Fortunate for me I'm working in Brooklyn and get to enjoy pizza once again and Tony's will not disappoint. Perfectly cooked crust, the right amount of cheese and delicious sauce are the simple ingredients for any pizza but Tony's takes those things and create a pizza masterpiece. In fact the other day I picked up a pie for my 1 hour commute home and my kid could t believe how delicious it was. My wife had a chicken roll and it also didn't disappoint. Of the many things of note to gleefully report: They have carb on carb pizza..as in pasta on a slice of baked dough. Classics are offered as well, like deep dish and thin crust- we ordered two deep dish style (one with bread crumbs on top) and one margarita thin slice and one long and thick cheese LOAF. What is the loaf? It was a cheese slice that brought me back to the elementary school cafeteria pizza in the best way possible- sheets of pizza sliced longitudinally so as to be placed swiftly in one's gullet. AMAZING. The this crust here is truly unparalleled, as I am a crispy and cronchy aficionato, you can take my word for it. Use caution in attacking the pies, they come out of the oven piping hot.
