It's been well over a decade, but ever since Bennett Enterprises bought Packo's in a commodity play, the quality has gone downhill. Across the board, other than the pickles, things just aren't as good as they used to be. While the classic - original locations still have the spirit and vibe of the brand intact, these bizarro fast-food versions of Tony Packo's fall short. The food quality and flavors just aren't there, and the seasonal items like the pickle bread are just awful. Incredibly delicious local Hungarian fare! I honestly didn't know how much I loved this cuisine until I tried Packos. Doesn't matter which location you choose, they're all excellent, as is everything on their menu. The servers and staff on Secor were tremendous. Very friendly. Very focused and they made sure we didn't leave with unanswered questions or the ability to sample things we were curious about. That ended up being a win-win. Can't actually do the food justice by describing it here. Right amount of spice, served warm, flavourful and the snap of the sausage made it all memorable. The laid back atmosphere is also great. Plenty to see on the walls and several autographed buns by some pretty famous folks. Story I'm getting was Burt Reynolds was passing through Toledo in 1972 and started this tradition. I bumped into a girl, one of northwest Ohio's very own daughters; a blond with a beautiful Slavic apple shaped face and a demeanor warmer than a bowl of grandma's goulash. She was back home from D.C. where she works as a staffer on Capitol Hill. She recommended Packo's. What a concept this place has! Hungarian fast food. To a Californian, that is wild. The food wasn't great. Of course not, its fast food. Although it does come with a lot of fanfare: merch galore, floor to ceiling. People must love their Packo's around here. What I had was the paprikash. The sauce was bland. The spätzle like dumplings weren't hot enough. The chicken breast (you wish it was chicken thigh), was tender, actually perfectly cooked. Stopped in here today to try the pickle bread. It is great a must try. It comes with orig packo pickles and banana peppers but you can request different pickles or jalapeños. Tony Packo's is a must stop as we drive through the Toledo area. Normally we go to the restaurant on Front Street, but Secor rd is right off 475 and we found this location closest to our route. Food is typical Packo's--chili dogs, soup, goulash(chili on top of dumplings...) as well as cabbage rolls and paprikash. We got chili dogs, veggie soup, and goulash. All were very good. The food is served in a cafeteria style method. We see the food as it's being placed on the plate. Service is fast and friendly. Portions are reasonable. I enjoyed the comfy chairs in the restaurant and some of the Tiffany style lamps hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant is bright--quite a contrast from the original location. Parking is easy as this is set up like a fast food restaurant in a strip mall. Yes, they have a drive through. Restrooms were clean and easily accessed. Prices are reasonable. A selection of pickles are available near the beverage station and they are pretty good!! Good iced tea is one of the beverage options. Although this restaurant lacks to coziness of the original store, it has some features not normally found in a fast food restaurant. read more

We Stopped here today while passing through Toledo. Wanted to try as I heard their food was awesome. Really disappointing. Son had chicken sandwich which he described as OK. I had a chili dog. Chili was gritty, cold and truly inedible. Got two orders of fries. Looked good, but fryer oil was rancid, making them inedible as well. Could not believe they sold their canned chili in the mini store inside the dining room. Had to go to the counter to ask for bathroom key. Dining room attractive and clean. Ok, I love that this is Klinger's favorite restaurant. Obviously. But this was a great place to eat! I live elsewhere and I am a travel nurse so I get to taste a lot of new stuff. My daughter and I were hungry and jumped off the I-90 for a quick lunch mid afternoon. She had the cabbage roll and I had the meatloaf special. Went to this place is our parting luncheon Sunday before our kids went back to Ohio Hudson, Ohio and we went back to Frankfurt Illinois. It's an experience that's for sure. I don't eat pork so I couldn't eat any of their hotdogs which they're famous for chicken chili was delicious And I ordered a chicken sandwich but it was fried so I didn't eat it. It took them three times to get french fries crisp but they were good. It's an interesting place and someplace everybody should go once I went back. The only thing I would order is chicken chili. My wife had a bowl and I had a cup and we both agreed it was delicious, but everything else was kind of weird that stuff on their menu. They said they never have like diet Dr Pepper and one of the dishes wanted to order and the waitress said they were going to reprint the menu without those things but was a weird place enjoy the buns on the walls which I've got pictures for you. read more

As a loyal, consummate M*A*S*H fan, I had to try Tony Packo's since I was passing through on a long road trip. I was not disappointed (bought a T-shirt too!). There was a lot more variety to the food than I anticipated, but I was here for the dogs. A tiny bit more like a Kielbasa with a definite hot dog snap and taste, the dogs, topped with the finely diced sweet onions and special sauce (lots of cumin) were a savory and sensory delight. Pickles were really, really good (and on the spicy side.) Would really like to return to try many of the other dishes like the Chicken Paprikash and Stuffed Cabbage. Surprisingly good food, especially for fast food. Fast Hungarian is not something you see often and I had to try it. The stuffed cabbage had a lot of flavor. Always hit the original on Eastside when home, but home for quick weekend- needed a fix. Tried out and definitely glad I did. Minute we walked in door we were warmly greeted and felt like long lost friends. I was a little apprehensive about trying this location after reading through some of the previous reviews. Crummy food, not enough food, and overpriced. I used to live in Toledo and was excited to see a fast food Packo's option close to my hotel. I'm glad I didn't listen to those other reviews and went. This location is set up counter style as they prepare what you order on a line in front of you. And then you pay at the end of the counter. Service was fine. We were promptly served and paid for 5 of us in less than 5 minutes. I ordered combo number 1 for $7.99. It came with a hot dog, soup, and drink. If you add a hot dog to a combo it's $1.99 extra. That's what I did and I made my hot dogs chili dogs. That's a lot of food and a drink for $10. That is certainly not overpriced and I didn't leave hungry. The hot dogs are sausages cut in half and have a snap to them when you bite into them. The coney sauce has a bit of spice to it and is very meaty and good. The chili was also a bit spicy with a lot of meat to it. The food is exactly as I remember it when I lived here. Only complaint I have is the chili and my wife's soup were lukewarm. And those were the first things we ate when we sat down. Otherwise, it is worth a visit if you don't want to go all the way to Front St. to enjoy this local gem. My wife also ordered stuffed cabbage and said it was delicious. My kids got chicken paprikas and ate it all. For $10 per person this is a good value. And the food is exactly as I remember. A taste of home. Sorely missed. I live in Florida and there is nothing like this anywhere so I appreciate every meal I get here. Do get the no 1 combo with chili. An amazing discovery! You no longer have to go to East Toledo for Hungarian specialties. Not that there's anything wrong with East Toledo, but I'm more often around the University. We had the very fine stuffed cabbage, and I wished I was around for more meals. They have the famous Hungarian hot dog and chicken paprikás and a couple of other signature dishes. I am not really sure what to make of it all. The restaurant is nice and clean, the staff was really nice. They were running a special that was pocket book friendly. The parking is a little odd. I think you have to zig zag through some other parking areas to get this store, but i may have gone in the wrong entrance. I have had the canned chili/hotdog sauce, which I really like and I am relatively new to Ohio. So when in Rome. So i got the special, 2 chili dog all the way with a side and drink, 7 bucks. So I was a little surprised to see that they cut their hotdog / sausage in half. But i guess given the size and the need to add the sauce it is needed. As a side, i got their chili, not to be confused with the chili sauce. Then to the pickle bar and other condiments. I love the pickles, especially the spicy ones. The cup of chili is okay. Some of the better stuff I have outside the Great Republic of Texas. But, i would rather saddle up next to a bowl of the chili sauce to be honest. No beans and much heartier flavor I think. I think they would be better off with smaller sausage so that they would not need to split them, but they have been successful longer then I have been alive, so what to I know. Just seems awkward. Been a loyal customer my entire life since I grew up by the original. I don't regularly visit but often enough to recognize that there are some awesome employees working at this particular location. They seem to be lead by a super kind, personable gentleman than engaged in conversation with us and appeared to really enjoy being here. I could tell the staff also appreciated him as a leader. I love Packo's and have never been to this location. Went in and an employee was in the prep area with her mask down below her chin. Same with the cashier handling people's money and taking orders. My health and safety wasn't worth a hotdog. It's too bad they don't care about their customer and employee's safety because the other Packo's I've been to have great food. I would like to say that this restaurant had one of the best customer service I have ever experienced. From the moment I entered til the moment I left, it was superb service. I believe the person that was helping me was the manager but if he wasn't, he should be. I didn't catch his name but he was a built black guy. Haha sorry for not being able to be anymore descriptive than that. Not only did he offer me samples because it was my first time there but he also made sure that everything was good. And it was!!! I would had to say the fries were my favorite only because I really do love fries. It was crispy and had great seasoning on it. Pricing is normal and there were plenty of different options. Just walking in was a pleasant surprise from the start! Having never been to this establishment we were greeted, and showered with samples galore. It was hard to choose. Tony Packo's is now Packo's (Eastern Europe Cafe) or some such thing. They still have the fabulous coney dogs, which I gotta say beat anything going in the Detroit coney Island category - they start with better dogs. They also have stuffed cabbage and some Hungarian food. The chicken soup with dumplings was good - but needs more chicken and less dumplings. I didn't sample much but having been to Hungary would love to try more! Doesn't seem overpriced to me, but I'm from Michigan - think the economy is still not the best here in Toledo.
