back up north to sit and visit with my cousin whom I haven't seen in far too long. she has a place on the lake by the yacht club but is having work done inside so this was convenient. the original Tony Packo's: hungarian before anyone knew what hangry was. there's a gift shop and some M*A*S*H stuff and some tourist traffic but mostly it's me and the locals supporting local business. Lauri laughs when I say it smells like Ohio when walking in; woody and old and alive in all its dim lighting and kitsch. tables are nice for groups but it's just us so we sit at the bar and we get a Packo's Feast plus an extra cabbage roll - we're here catching up so 'food' was more of a place for meeting than a reason, but get an extra cabbage just the same. hand rolled seasonal beefs and porks and rice wrapped in cabbages and simmered in a thick tomatoey sauce, plated lightly sauced with hot pickles on the side - man these are good. the hot dogs are more like smoke sausage than weiners and split because that's how it's done; plus onions, kraut, and yellow mustard (just like god intended) under a generous slather of dog sauce plus hot pickles on the side. cup of chili comes with an equal amount of baby oyster crackers in second a bowl. now i shall spend the afternoon musing on a simpler place in time. the last law of thermodynamics states that food is cold at the same temperature where beer is warm. but good food will still be good at room temperature or even out of the fridge (a few items test the hypothesis but don't break it) so sit and talk and listen, the food will still be there and still be good... read more

So, I've eaten at Tony Packo's before, but not at this location. It had a merchandise store, and it was spacious. Since i ordered takeout, i really didn't notice much else, but the service was quick. I was caught off guard that, under all that chili, the hot dogs were half a hot dog. Like, what is that about? They were good, but only half a hot dog. Fun little hole in the wall in Toledo. Went for the famed hotdogs, and we were not disappointed! The waitress recommended we try the European style hot dog, instead of the American style, and we both really liked it! We had the dogs with chili and had Mac n' cheese and the German potato salad--hot dogs were great; Mac n cheese was solid, nothing to write home about; potato salad was a delight, reminded me of my (German) grandpa's variety. I've always wanted to try Tony Packo's, because of the references in M*A*S*H*, like most people. I loved the ambiance, with the signed buns and rustic feel. It seems to be very much a local favorite, where servers & customers recognize each other. But, the whole place smelled like sauerkraut to me. I got the beef sliders and cucumber salad. The sliders were just ok. I thought they should have a sweeter sauce or something. They tasted kind of odd. I found the hot dogs too salty that I could not finish. The pierogis were not flavorful, not tender or had enough filling. What an ironic place to visit, Tony Packo's! Almost 100 years old. Their claim to fame isn't just the great Hungarian food, but the signatures on a bun. In 1972, Burt Reynolds stopped by after filming. The restaurant knew who he was so they asked for his signature. He gave his autograph on a bun. Over 1,000 buns have been signed by celebrities, politicians including 7 presidents, and more. Pretty neat to see. I am curious how they are able to preserve those buns. First off, your first bite of anything has to be the chili dog. Whether it's a regular or the MOAD, it doesn't matter, it's Hungarian sausage with chili sauce that is just in a league of it's own. First time to the Original Tony Packo's location. We were intrigued by the autographed buns all over. About 85% of the signatures have actually visited the location and all have tried his food. The original location on Front street is also the very best. Toledo's home to the Hungarian kolbasz sausage. The decor is exceptional. The walls are covered with pictures of the famous and autographed hot dog buns, a tradition that started way back in 1972 by actor Burt Reynolds. Usually, the service is acceptable. We've had one maybe two incidents where the servers weren't very good. All the food here is exceptional. The dumplings are near perfect and the garlic pickles are the very best. Not too spicy, yet addicting. Their chicken paprikas and the stuffed cabbage are also top shelf. You really should try the TP original Hungarian Dog with mustard, onion and chili. They give you a slice of their famous pork sausage on a tasty warmed bun. Cheese is optional, for a charge. I keep meaning to ask if they have a menu option to buy the entire sausage, not just part of one. They were smart enough to open a gift shop in the back. You'll find everything Tony Packo's from tee shirts to pickles to coffee mugs and more. I've got a TP baseball jersey at home.
