Our server was Ja' Nessa and she was an absolute peach. She tended to our needs and answered all of our questions. The food was very good! The pirogies were so tasty! I loved the paprika and sour cream sauce. I ordered the roast beef sliders with the horseradish aioli on the side. They were amazing! I wish I could cook roast beef like these sliders. (I learned about the sliders on their website promotions page.) My husband had the Classic Hot dog with macaroni and cheese. He ate every bite! We ordered the Lemon Strudel with ice cream for dessert. I loved the signed buns hanging on the walls. Fun decor! I am glad that I was able to come here for the very first time. read more

Classic. Historic. Eastern European Comfort Food. And yes indeed, there is a gift shop. Oddly, this place was on my coastal sister's radar long before I moved to the midwest. Why? Her partner at the time was deeply into pickles. And Packo's is almost synonymous with pickles. If there is any doubt, stick your head into the gift shop. As good as everything is, the pickles may be the best part. For the sake of full disclosure, I am still continuing to dial in my perfect order at TPs. I think I was pretty close on the last trip with stuffed cabbage and a Hungarian "hot dog" with chili, onions, and mustard. Personally, I find adding this cheese to these hot dogs does not add much beyond calories and fat (and not the kind of fat that equals flavor, there is already plenty of that in the sausage and chili). But the hot dogs come with pickles. And they are magnificent. It's kind of like the fun that comes with eating shishito peppers. You never know which one is going to be the spicy one. The spicy ones are especially delightful. One of these days I'll get the fried pickles. I am sure they are divine, and may bring the place up to 5 stars. But I need to bring a crew with me, and regrettably, my family just isn't into this type of cuisine. For me, the stuffed cabbage tapped into some ancient ancestral memory and brought me an unreasonable amount of joy. So it goes. Personally, I found the pierogi to be a bit dry, but my basis for comparison is Polish. Perhaps this is precisely how pierogi are prepared in Hungary. But the bottom line is that Tony Packo's is a regional treasure. If you haven't been, go. If you've gone, visit them again. These are trying time for restaurants and if we do not support them they may shutter. That would be a tragedy. read more

back up north to sit and visit with my cousin whom I haven't seen in far too long. she has a place on the lake by the yacht club but is having work done inside so this was convenient. the original Tony Packo's: hungarian before anyone knew what hangry was. there's a gift shop and some M*A*S*H stuff and some tourist traffic but mostly it's me and the locals supporting local business. Lauri laughs when I say it smells like Ohio when walking in; woody and old and alive in all its dim lighting and kitsch. tables are nice for groups but it's just us so we sit at the bar and we get a Packo's Feast plus an extra cabbage roll - we're here catching up so 'food' was more of a place for meeting than a reason, but get an extra cabbage just the same. hand rolled seasonal beefs and porks and rice wrapped in cabbages and simmered in a thick tomatoey sauce, plated lightly sauced with hot pickles on the side - man these are good. the hot dogs are more like smoke sausage than weiners and split because that's how it's done; plus onions, kraut, and yellow mustard (just like god intended) under a generous slather of dog sauce plus hot pickles on the side. cup of chili comes with an equal amount of baby oyster crackers in second a bowl. now i shall spend the afternoon musing on a simpler place in time. the last law of thermodynamics states that food is cold at the same temperature where beer is warm. but good food will still be good at room temperature or even out of the fridge (a few items test the hypothesis but don't break it) so sit and talk and listen, the food will still be there and still be good... read more

One of my favorite restaurants. I wish I was closer. Went in after driving back from Newport KY. Great nostalgic place. The dining area is like a museum to chili dogs they serve. I ordered a Front Street Chili dog. The dog was fantastic super soft bun, hot cooked perfectly the chili was as usual top notch Tony Packo excellence. Then had two sides of the paprikas. Those little dumplings are so addictive the sauce is amazing. Our server was fantastic taking our order to eat in then our large carry out. I got the Chicken paprikas , the stuffed cabbage and a quart of the paprikas. The stuff cabbage is the best I've had at a restaurant. These are some big rolls. The dining area is a must to see. Autographed hot dog buns hung everywhere by celebrities and politicians who have stopped in. The dining area was clean and not noisy. Can't wait to get back. read more

The building, history, and the staff were excellent! Service was good. I had the chicken Paprikash and my girlfriend had a chili dog. I was underwhelmed. The chicken was rather dry and stringy and the hot dog was better than the chili that was on it. Sorry, Rudy's has the better Toledo chili. I'd come back here, though. Lots of stuff to look at and I'll simply try another menu item read more

So, I've eaten at Tony Packo's before, but not at this location. It had a merchandise store, and it was spacious. Since i ordered takeout, i really didn't notice much else, but the service was quick. I was caught off guard that, under all that chili, the hot dogs were half a hot dog. Like, what is that about? They were good, but only half a hot dog. I guess they figure if you ate a whole hot dog, you'd likely be full. Maybe it's always been that way, and i never noticed. Edit: See owner's response below regarding the "half the hot dog." Also, nice to see an owner response. Good business tactic. read more

Tony Packo's was such a fun experience. Loved exploring the restaurant and seeing all the signed hot dog buns lining the walls, definitely a unique piece of history and pop culture in one place. On top of that the food was genuinely good, so it's a win all around. Worth checking out if you're in Ohio and want something a little different. read more

Fun little hole in the wall in Toledo. Went for the famed hotdogs, and we were not disappointed! The waitress recommended we try the European style hot dog, instead of the American style, and we both really liked it! We had the dogs with chili and had Mac n' cheese and the German potato salad--hot dogs were great; Mac n cheese was solid, nothing to write home about; potato salad was a delight, reminded me of my (German) grandpa's variety. We split the cookies and apple strudel with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Dessert was just meh -- go for lunch/dinner, skip dessert. Signed hot dogs were kitchy. Only thing I'd say needs attention are the bathrooms -- definitely need a renovation. Small and in major need of updates. Otherwise, I would definitely go back! read more

I've always wanted to try Tony Packo's, because of the references in M*A*S*H*, like most people. I loved the ambiance, with the signed buns and rustic feel. It seems to be very much a local favorite, where servers & customers recognize each other. But, the whole place smelled like sauerkraut to me. I got the beef sliders and cucumber salad. The sliders were just ok. I thought they should have a sweeter sauce or something. They tasted kind of odd. I really liked the flavor of the cucumber salad, but the dressing would have been better if it had been thicker. I'm glad I stopped in, but I don't think I need to go back. read more

Kids gave it 5 stars! We came in on a Sunday for a family lunch. We arrived right before noon and the place was already starting to fill up. We had a great server. We ordered a variety of food to share - hot dog platter, pierogies, chicken paprikas, pretzels and beer cheese and a kids chicken finger meal. Everyone enjoyed the food. While waiting we checked out the signed buns near our table. Plus they bring the food out as it is ready so you get your cold food quickly. Overall a fun place to visit. read more

Tony Packo's is a Toledo institution with so much history. We visited their original location which has hot dog buns signed by celebrities on their walls which is really neat since you get to see who has visited this landmark. The main stable here is their chili which pairs well with their pierogis topped with onions and cheese or their famous original hot dogs that have that ever so satisfying snap when you bite into them. They also have wonderful Hungarian chicken paprikas. The service and the atmosphere is fun and they even have a gift shop that sells their hot dogs, pickles and other items. This is a must try if you're in the Toledo area. read more

Tony Packo's - 1 Packo's Original Hot Dog - Hot Dogs Near Me - Toledo, Ohio

With an overnight stay in Toledo, I wanted to try a cuisine that I was not familiar with. Doing a Yelp search, I found a place that served Hungarian food. The restaurant was eccentric - decorated with all kinds of autographed hot dogs, human figured statues, and other amusing things to look at. Their store has unusual and interesting products. I found the hot dogs too salty that I could not finish. The pierogis were not flavorful, not tender or had enough filling. I never had fried pickles before so I thought it would be much more crispier. The stuffed cabbage was tender, delicious and flavorful. Mac and Cheese was good - just enough cheese and liquidly. It's a delightful place to visit - unusual, excellent service and had good positive vibrations. Based on the reviews, I was expecting something more. I was more into the food rather than the atmosphere and environment. I am giving this four stars because I did not think the food was that good - it's more comfort food at reasonable prices. It was not Hungarian enough for me. read more

Ordered a take out order tonight for the family and it was inedible! Mashed potatoes tasted like glue. Paid over $7.00 dollars for chicken soup which was only half full and 90% broth. I ordered pumpkin strudel and got apple. This by the way was almost $5.00 and it was 2"x2", the size of a piece of fudge not a pastry. The pretzel tasted like dirty unchanged grease and the cheese sauce smelled like vomit. The smell was so bad I couldn't even try it. One of the dinners came with white bread which was a half inch thick and so stale we threw it away. The last time I bought food here it was also bad but I thought I would give it another try. Have been eating at Tony Packo's for more than 25 years. This was the last time! Food quality and serving sizes has gone way down and prices way up. Time to put this restaurant to bed. Two stars is being generous. read more

What's a bit shocking is how this place or any other packo's has such a high rating for basically buffet food. The food is so bad. The ambience is good and the service is good. Location: 1902 Front Street, Toledo Ohio Website: www.tonypackos.com Online order app: https://direct.chownow.com/order/24580/locations/36224 Menu: see website Hours: see website I grew up in the Toledo area and a faithful fan of Tony Packo's. The original location is charming and the food is consistently good. The service is excellent, whether you are dining in or taking out. Tonight I picked up a takeout order for a birthday dinner, made incredibly easy with their online order app. A nice assortment including chicken paprikash, chicken chili mac, fried pickles, and many, many chili dogs. I am very fond of their dumplings - small little pasta nuggets that are perfect with chili for the perfect bite, every time. The chili dogs are simply the best. A quarter of a smoked Hungarian sausage, covered with a finely minced beef chili, diced onions, and shredded cheese in a soft bun. Served with a nice sampling of their famous pickles, you will enjoy this great feature. There are several locations in NW Ohio and they all nod to the original with framed, signed hot dog buns. Tony Packo's in Toledo is a good spot. I enjoyed a quick dinner there the other day. It is good for a casual meal. The staff was attentive.

First things first, Packo's was packed! Our server was really nice and fast. Parking is across the street and can be difficult to cross if you hesitate. We had a cup of chili, a 5-piece of the original pierogis, and 2 original dogs. Chili was delicious! No notes. Dogs were absolutely amazing. However, I've had frozen pierogis better than these. They were chewy and too soft. There was almost no filling. Probably just stick to the hotdogs when you come if you're between the two. Overall, a great place! read more

What an ironic place to visit, Tony Packo's! Almost 100 years old. Their claim to fame isn't just the great Hungarian food, but the signatures on a bun. In 1972, Burt Reynolds stopped by after filming. The restaurant knew who he was so they asked for his signature. He gave his autograph on a bun. Over 1,000 buns have been signed by celebrities, politicians including 7 presidents, and more. Pretty neat to see. I am curious how they are able to preserve those buns. My husband suggested we stop at this iconic hot dog spot on our way home. Glad we did! I was able to try the kraut pierogis and Packo dog. My husband got the Packo feast. This was a lot of food but it was my first time and I wanted to try it all. Hungarians hot dogs are so yummy! I love that this restaurant looks 100 years old. Original decor, stained glass light fixtures, and signed buns. I love when a restaurant or business rich with history doesn't change things when they get popular. This only hiccup was the service. Our waiter seemed out of it. He couldn't remember what we ordered and he disappeared after we got our waters. Overall, everyone was nice and the food was great. read more
