The store is right next to Notting hill book shop, dine inside & outside. Good food. Soup is thick.

This new addition to the Tonkotsu chain really brings back memories of Japan except the price. Just a small cosy restaurant with one bar table looking over the kitchen like most ramen bars are in Japan. It's not usually associated for social purposes but more catered for students and salary men being a no fuss one bowl fast food that you have in your quick lunch break and then leave. Pretty much the same here with the clean wooden decor, simple bar seats, comfortable enough to enjoy your meal but not suitable to linger around after. It was cool, the ability to see our food freshly prepared and the big pots of broth stewing away. Chicken karaage Lovely fresh pieces of chicken karaage which we saw being chopped, dipped in batter and fried in front of us. The batter was incredibly crispy and greaseless with some elasticity breaking away to a succulent and juicy piece of chicken thigh inside. Pork gyoza I find it weird how they went off track from the traditional Japanese gyoza where the dumpling is usually completely sealed. Here they have them open ended like ones you find in Beijing. I suppose it demonstrates how fresh these gyoza are as being made in this method means they can only be served straight after being made or otherwise the moisture will evaporate. So the gyozas are first scald in boiling water and then pan fried on one side so it's crisp. This scalding results in a lovely chewy consistency in the pastry with the crisp side to contrast it and wrapped inside was an juicy pork meatball. The open ends allow you to dip so the sauce fragrance not only the pastry but the meat too, which to be honest, could have done with more herbs. But with a drizzle of vinegar, soy and chilli oil, it couldn't have been more mouthwatering. Crab korokke Although deep fried this was lovely and light. It was generously filled with a creamy soft filling of crab and seasoned well. The coating of batter was so thin the moment you bite into it, it pops to release the crab filling. Be careful though as its piping hot!! 'Hamachi' Sashimi. Lovely thick fresh silky pieces of yellowtail. For a ramen bar not specialising in sashimi I was very impressed with the flavour and quality. It was velvety and bouncy, marinated in a light citrusy ponzu sauce that made it very appetising. Tokyo ramen A broth made of pork and chicken. Personally I feel the broth lacked depth and the flavour was a bit too simple and one noted. The pork however was lovely and smokey and egg beautifully cooked and runny. The noodles were a little soft but that's probably because we were served our starters after our mains so the noodles were sitting in the hot broth being cooked. It was okay and somewhat a healthier choice. Tsukemen This was a much better choice. The dipping broth was very rich, fatty, fragrant and thick. You have to control the dipping as it's quite salty but with the right amount of the broth coating the noodles it could be one of the best slurping noodle experience you can have. The homemade noodles that accompanied it was thicker and bouncier for a better textural bite, served with succulent juicy fatty pork and fresh spring onions for extra depth and a fresher flavour. Really loved it! I have been to a couple of Tonkotsus and so far it is my favourite branch due to its authentic decor and atmosphere. Sadly I find their tonkotsu and ramen broth still lacks that creaminess and depth that other ramen restaurants have been able to achieve making it still a weak competitor against Bone Daddies and Shoryu. However for the locals and workers in the area that just fancy an easy choice of ramen for lunch in Notting Hill, they're pretty lucky to get Tonkotsu in their area. I welcome it very much.

poped over for a quick dinner. My second time to have ramen in London following the Syoryu. Actually I've heard a lot from many Japanese 'Kanada-ya' is the best but haven't tried it yet. But 'Tonkotsu' was much better than 'Syoryu'.The taste was almost close to Japanese one. It satisfied me!! Chill oil put on the table was really amazing. It was not really spicy, full of a lot of flavor, which is officially written red miso, garlic, onion, sesame seeds and sesame oil are added. But it quite tasted seaweed(海苔) for me.(They must add it as a secret twist).I liked it so put a lot in it other than vinegar. The restaurant inside was dark and calm with the ambient lighting which made me feel relaxed. (suitable for even dates!) This must be the difference between 'Tonkotsu' and 'Kanada-ya'.

Location is impeccable right off Portobello Rd. The interior is cozy and modern. The ramen was delectable but the star of the show were the wings! The mochi was also excellent as well. Will be back!

I visited Tonkotsu on a cold April Sunday hoping for some warming ramen. According to Google, this place has one of the best ramen in town. Make the long story short: I am not sure what makes this place so special. The ramen served is not wort almost £13 they have. It's a small restaurant and the place seemed empty with one other guest sitting at the opposite end of the ramen bar. Upon arriving I sat by the bar I ordered the lamb ramen special for £12.75 ($18) and liquid mistress beer for £5.50 ($8). It took them 10 min to serve me. Not bad. Unfortunately the ramen is nothing special. I had a lot better ones in Chicago. It comes with 5 pieces of very hard to chew on pork belly slices... I mean I expected to have more flavor for the money I paid. Would not come back here.

As a preface, after two years of working in Japan, I have become extremely picky when it comes to Japanese food, especially sushi, sashimi and ramen/udon/everything noodle based. I was already skeptical going into one of these nouveaux Japanese ramen bars where decor and menu try to fakely imitate the traditional ramen-yas of Japan. I couldnt fault the staff and service, they were friendly, professional and knew their menu well. I opted for their signature 16 hour slow cooked tonkotsu broth ramen. When it arrived, I was disappointed with their portion, it was small but it did have the general ingredients one would expect, two pieces of char-siu, half a warm boiled egg, some bamboo shoots, corn, bean sprouts and spring onions, with a dash of black garlic oil. Everything was there but it definitely lacked a punch, the flavour was a bit of a let down, the soups and flavours were definitely was not rich enough and seemed too watery. I left disappointed and still hungry. For its price, i expected more. On top of that, they do make their own in-house chilli sauce, despite it being flavoursome, it did not fit well with Japanese cuusine. The overpowering sundried tomatoes left me confused as it did not blend well with the ramen, nor did the "chilli" oil have any kick to it.

I love ramen and in Japan I probably had it once a day. I was really excited when I saw that this place opened as I live just around the corner!! I got Tokyo ramen and pork gyoza. I'd tried the tonkotsu in another of their restaurant and I have to say the Tokyo was nicer. The German chef was really friendly and service good. The menu was not in its final version, so there weren't many options, but I think the proper menu should be coming soon. Definitely the best place for ramen in west London!

Tonkotsu Ramen with extra bamboo shoots! Yum.

We mixed the soy sauce and vinegar together for a dipping sauce and it cuts down the oiliness so it was perfect.

Nothing like a bit of ramen to warm your belly up.) We were sat upstairs and brought water and menus. At first, I thought, what a cool small ramen spot - but no, there's a downstairs!!! There's actually loads of space! Do not be deceived if it's full upstairs, chances are there's seating downstairs. The lunch menu consists of any small ramen bowl on the menu and a side for £9.95. I chose the pork, ginger and garlic gyoza, which came to the table fresh from the kitchen. For mains, I chose the Miso mushroom ramen, which was absolutely delicious. There was a variety of mushrooms which topped the homemade noodles, accompanied with a seasoned egg, black kale, bamboo shoots and spring onions. The broth was made up of konbu and shiitake mushroom and was miso based. Delicious!! I had the option to upgrade to a large bowl for an extra £1.95, but it was rather filling! I would definitely come back again to try more from the menu; I've got my eye on the chilli chicken ramen for next time!

Upon entry, the staff greeted you warmly and were on point to execute a perfectly designed bowl of ramen for your eating pleasure. I honestly felt guilty from the way I enjoyed my ramen given how much my oldest daughter loves the food. I appreciated how open the staff was to making my bowl "extra" spicy and adding yet another egg even though it wasn't specifically on the menu but satisfied my particular desire. What added to the "realness" of the resturant was the steady flow of what seemed to be true ramen experts coming in and navigating the scene, menu, and food at lightning speed with even better eating results. If ramen is your thing, then you NEED to check out this place. Definitely one of the top spots for Ramen I've been to in all my travels. Always a good sign! Made a reservation for 8:45pm and went out for a drink. Make sure to make a reservation on Fridays! I ordered a Tokyo Tonkotsu (large with no extras) and a Kirin beer and my girlfriend ordered a Wakame Ramen (medium with extra pickled ginger) and a plum wine! The ramen was really really good. It looked like Jason Pollock splattered my t-shirt with Pork Bone broth afterwards! The large portion for more than enough (and we had just finished a long walk and we're starving). I would recommend adding extra pork but that's the only thing I would change. The extra pickled ginger also supposedly went really well with the Wakame (chicken) ramen. I will be coming back here soon and bringing the rest of the family!

Not bad for a random ramen spot on the English seaside…read more The Tokyo Tonkotsu bowl is less like the complex, thin broths at self-aware ramen shops across NYC and more like the hearty, no-frills ramen I had in Japan (e.g. Tenkaippin!) - so unctuous and flavorful that the broth is undrinkable at the end. I was expecting something more watery and clean-tasting from the vegetarian soy milk ramen. What came instead was thick and rich, nearly as heavy as the tonkotsu (minus all that salt). It had no soybean flavor, but I can see it being a holy grail for vegetarians who want to experience the luscious guilt of a fatty pork broth. I'm still conflicted (my palate wanted soy milk!) but it was certainly tasty. The karaage was not what I expected either. It's more a boneless tebasaki - fried chicken morsels given the Japanese chicken wing treatment, coated in a thin, sweet soy glaze. I liked it but was craving the typical, dry karaage fried lightly in starch. I do wish the bowls had been served hotter. They use thin noodles (apparently made in-house?!) and wanting to retain the noodle consistency is one excuse for serving a broth less than boiling hot, but the noodles got soggy quickly anyway. Manager and staff are friendly. Actual Japanese people come here willingly! 10% student discount helps with the £8 pricetag.
