My toddler and I needed some dinner and he had been asking for Asian noodles all week.
We had already been to the delicious Lanzhou Lamian Noodle Bar twice in the week already, and while great, I wanted to try something different.
I found this restaurant that was highly reviewed and super close to our hotel. Perfect! I decided to order takeout and bring it back to the hotel for ease (with a toddler). The restaurant was packed! Good thing we were ordering to go. It was also impossible to get a stroller into the tight doorway.
The menu is a little confusing. I read the great reviews about the Biangbiang noodles, so I knew I wanted to order that. However, there were a lot of options that were kind of confusing. Even after asking the waitress, I still wasn't sure what I was ordering. It was weird. I couldn't figure out if the options were related to what type of sauce the noodles were in or if they were toppings.
For example, you get the noodles:
- SPRING ONION & CHILLI OIL (V)
- TOMATO & EGG SAUCE (V)
- SPICY BRAISED PORK, TOMATO, EGG SAUCE & CHILLY OIL £2.00
- SLOW COOK BEEF, TOMATO, EGG SAUCE & CHILLI OIL £3.00
- SLOW COOK LAMB, TOMATO, EGG SAUCE & CHILLI OIL £3.00
I tried to ask the waitress what was popular or the best way to order to the dish, but she kept deflecting and said it's whatever you like. I like everything though. This was not helpful since I didn't understand what the optional extras related to.
This dish was good, but I probably wouldn't order it again. But also, I think I may not ordered what everyone else gets. I got it with spring onion and chili oil, but I think this was a mistake. I think the tomato and egg sauce is essential. The dish didn't mix that well. In the half block I walked back to the hotel, the noodles went a bit hard, so I think they needed more sauce.
I also saw they had a cold noodle on the menu, so I asked if it was Liang Pi and the waitress, said yes! I rarely see that dish on menus, so I was really excited to order it! It was good, but she asked if I wanted to add sesame sauce. It was extra, so I declined, but I think that's an essential part of the dish. I'm not sure why it was extra. It would have been better with it. This dish was good, but it wasn't anywhere as good as Xi'an Famous Noodles in NYC. This was missing the fun texture of the spongy seitan. Still, I rarely see this dish, so this was a must-order for me, and I'd return for this dish alone.
Also, with a name like Murger in the name of the restaurant, I thought I better order one. I got the Roast Duck Murger which was good, but not memorable. I'm not that into these sandwiches. I've ordered them before at Xi'an Famous Food, but they're kind of dry.
The food took a really long time to come out which was unfortunate because there was nowhere to wait, so my toddler and I were outside in the cold waiting for a very long time for our food. He was getting crabby. I wish they would have given a heads up how long it would have been, or I could have left and came back when it was ready.
Anyway, this restaurant is good, but I had higher hopes for it. The Liang Pi noodles were worth it for me though. Plus, I feel like this restaurant is better to sit in for. However, all the food was well prepared for takeaway! I think they do a lot of online orders, so everything was packaged well. I just think some of the dishes like the biangbiang noodles would be better in house. read more
