HORRENDOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE! The other day I visited Tom's in Pasadena. My family and I ordered our food and the girl at the counter was great, our food came out quickly and tasted great. My sister and I had ordered a turkey burger and classic double burger, respectively, both of which were $5.69 (I've included pictures of the menu). After we received the food, I noticed that we had both paid different prices for our combos (medium drink and fries) even though the original prices for our burgers were the same. I brought it to the attention of our server who so sweetly tried to offer an explanation but said she was puzzled as to why that was the case and decided to go and ask the owner.
Next, another employee called Briana, who introduced herself as the manager, again tried to offer an explanation about how the stock market makes beef more expensive and I countered with the fact that it didn't make sense to me that both burgers individually would be the same price but if we both got combos, one would be more expensive than the other. I said that yes I understood that prices for meats are different but that then that should be reflected in the original prices of the individual burgers not tacked onto the combo prices, because that's deceptive to customers. She went to the register and did some calculations showing that this same hiking up prices happens to other items on their menu too (e.g. tuna versus chicken sandwiches)-so it was across the board. She too mentioned that it was very strange and apologized for the flawed logic. She said she'd get the owner to come out and explain because it didn't seem fair or logical.
When he finally arrived much later, the first thing out of his mouth was an arrogant "What's up?" I began to explain the situation but he cut me off and simply told me that he didn't set he prices, he wasn't the owner and there was nothing he could do about it. He was extremely sarcastic, rude and unprofessional, talking over the top of my family and I as we tried to ask him why the prices were different. We repeatedly and explicitly said to him that the concern wasn't about the price (especially since we'd already paid at this point at began eating), but rather the principle of charging someone additional for getting a combo when this could be clear from the get-go. His responses to us were, "well, if you don't like it here you can go somewhere else!", "I just take my paycheck and go home, I don't set the prices!" and that "when I go a restaurant I don't care what I pay, I just pay." We told him we understood that it was out of his control to set the prices but that the logic behind penalizing customers didn't make sense and that it reflected poorly on them. He was continually rude to us (e.g. said other customers had never complained before), took two phone calls in the middle of our conversations as well as texting on his phone without excusing himself in any way.
When he continued to berate us, I mentioned to him that all this time he was yet to apologize in any way. He simply nodded in agreement and shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'yes, I don't want to apologize.' All he said he could do was said he could pass my details onto the "owner's owners owner" and MAYBE they would call back offering an explanation but he could not guarantee anything since we were not "satisfied" with the answer he had given. We asked his name and position in the restaurant, but he remained elusive saying that he wasn't the owner, manager or overseer but that he cooked, cleaned, washed dishes and that his title/role when hired was "a little bit of everything." We found this response appalling and a lie. He said his name was Moe and that he, too, had owned a restaurant in the past and worked in customer service for over 18 years.
Overall, we were most shocked by the fact that he blatantly refused to offer an apology at the very least, nor did he concede any wrongdoing/lack of clarity on his or the restaurant's part. Although an initially seemingly minor incident, it escalated into intransigence, and him being extremely unprofessional, disrespectful, haughty and providing poor customer service. Sadly, he tarnished the reputation and impression of the other employees that we interacted with, who in contrast were so lovely and conciliatory. Many days later, they are still yet to contact me.
Others need to know that being observant about prices at Tom's may result in being verbally assaulted by employees, which I don't think is called for. read more
