I came here for dinner with my coworker a week or two ago. We ordered the soup dumplings (good flavor), green beans (super small portion for $8) and cumin noodles (good flavor but small portions). I'm not sure if this is a PA thing since the Asian population must be smaller than I'm used to and therefore less competition but the cost for this food is outrageous. $8 for 15 pieces of green beans and a cup of rice? I went to this location recently and was extremely disappointed. Things started off ok with soup and dumplings, More on this later. However, the entrees we ordered tasted as though they were prepared by someone without any cooking experience. Each dish we ordered was worse than the next. All four entrees we ordered we practically inedible. The pork dishes had a "funky" aroma and that made my stomach lurch. All of the dishes were prepared with so much sodium, you would have thought they were made using sea water! I would have returned every one of them, but I didn't want to cause a scene. The mandatory tip was an insult after enduring this gastric disaster. I imagine this place is strictly a soup and dumpling house. I'm guessing the dumplings are brought in from another location, with this group throwing them in a frying pan or steamer. The meats and vegetables are prepared as stock for their soups, and it looks like they're reprocessed into these monstrosities they call entrees. What made things worse, was when I tried explaining this to the server, he pretended he didn't understand what I was saying and started repeating "His reasons" why i didn't like the food... "oh too spicy?" I'm not sure where these 4/5 star reviews are coming from! I seriously doubt the validity of these reviews, because a 4/5 star restaurant could never prepare food this bad on an "off night'. read more

Excited to see Tom's in the area!!! Stopped in for lunch today and it did not disappoint. Pork and crabmeat soup dumplings were delicious. Filled with soup and the skin wasn't tough or chewy. The filling in the Crystal Shrimp dumpling is similiar to the chinese version of "fun gor" just shaped like a "har kow". The beef noodle soup was delicious too. Soup base was flavorful. This is truly a mixed review. I Love soup dumplings. Good news I now don't have to go all the way to the city. Bad news they are not nearly as good as Dim Sum Garden In China town. They were not hot. Just warm. The pan fried pork Chive dumplings were very good . The scallion pancake was very good. The cucumber salad was sad. And not spicy at all. General Taos Tofu was good but came out when we were done . The restaurant was pretty and the service was just ok. It was good enough that I'll give it another try. I'd always wanted to try this place and it did not disappoint! Went on a Sunday evening around 5:30 just before it got very busy and the food came out so fast we couldn't keep up! Pork soup dumplings are a must; they do them justice here. And the eggplant vegetable dish had delicious flavor and came with a nice ball of rice. Came here with a friend for a lunch date. The restaurant gives a great first impression. The dinning area is clean and orderly. It was not crowded when we first arrived so we were seated right away. The wait staff was very friendly and we got hot tea and water at our table right away. The menu is varied enough that if you do not want dim sum you can order Chinese American classics like general tso chicken or shrimp and broccoli. We order 3 different types of dumplings, cold noddles and scallion pancakes, my favorite. The dumplings were good but I preferred my veggie fried dumplings out of the pork and chicken and pork. The cold noddles were okay but the taste of the peanut butter was a little thick to me. I loved the scallion pancakes. They were crispy and yummy. All and all the food was a good value as our bill totaled only 32 dollars. I'd definitely go back. read more

It's pretty ok food here offered at ridiculously high prices. Pretty bad food in comparison to Sang Kee, DJ's, etc. The pork fried rice is made without bbq pork- it's pretty dry meat with no flavor. The rice itself seemed to be reheated. The general tso chicken sucked. It was not breaded well, and had no crisp. To too that off, it had a weird spicy ketchup flavor to it. One of the worst sauces i've had on general tso chicken across the USA. Now, on to the decent- the green beans with minced pork were pretty good. Thankfully, this pork seemed to be seasoned and was less dry. Additionally, the scallion pancakes (while they were not as crisp as I am accustomed to), tasted pretty good. Definitely the highlight is between these to. A 3 star establishment at 5 star prices. I wouldn't return, but if the aforementioned places were closed i'd order their scallion pancakes and green beans again. read more

It's been a while since I've had good soup dumplings. Now that I live somewhere where Chinese food is a little more scarce, I've been having a soup dumpling craving like no other. When I was in Media to visit my boyfriend's parents, we got a chance to stop by TDS to finally get my fix! The town of Media definitely feels old-timey and quaint. The exterior of TDS definitely matches that but the interior definitely looks like a more hip Chinese restaurant. The service is generally pretty responsive, especially if you order in Chinese. Their speed is a little touch-and-go depending on what time you go. Early afternoon seems best. Try to take your time to verify the order before food starts coming out, since the servers tend to move quickly. Dishes I've had: -Pork Fried Rice: This classic dish is done pretty well, with good flavor. The pork is slightly crispy which is a big plus. The dish size feels a little small though, but maybe that's just because I'm a big eater. -Pork Soup Dumplings: Yum!! Big fan of this. At $6 for 6 dumplings, these are a good deal. The pork is tender and the broth is flavored well. -Beef Ho Fun: Their take on the classic stir-fry noodle dish is done well. It's not super greasy/oily like some places make it, and the beef isn't overcooked. -Eggplant in Garlic Sauce: This is always a personal favorite of mine. They do a good job of making this flavorful without overcooking the eggplant or letting it soak up too much oil! Overall, TDS doesn't feel like anything super special. But, I do have to say it is a solid place if you want a meal that you know will be authentic and tasty. We went in for Sunday Dim sum, post Covid. No one wearing masks except for the staff. People out and about not too crowded. Found parking across the street but not sure if it is allowed for Iron Hill or Trader Joes. The restaurant is small and the staff very welcoming. People had byob going on the other table. Now for the food. The menu is HUGE! Ordered pickled radish soup with shredded pork, which was very hot and nicely spiced with salty fish flakes. Also fat shrimp soup dumplings which I added to the broth. Kid had fried chicken dumplings and we shared the beef short ribs, which came in a nice sweet and spicy sauce. Garlic Chinese broccoli was cooked to perfection, not overcooked, with nice big stalks. Fluffy round mounds of rice bowls. Only misstep was the bang bang shrimp skewers with a somewhat powdery tasting batter. Ah well. I like that there are sauces already on the table, red oil and vinegar. For a second I closed my eyes and forgot I was in MEDIA. If you like Chinese food that isn't boring, I recommend this place. I can't wait to get through the entire menu. read more

My husband and I went here today on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't packed when we got there and we were seated right away. I was ecstatic to get a table quickly. We got hot tea and ice water promptly and someone took our order as well at that time. We ordered what we normally would at dim sum. Shrimp dumplings, crab soup dumplings, roast pork bun, shrimp suimai, sesame balls, and fish dumplings. (Har gow) Shrimp dumplings, I get these all the time whenever I eat dim sum. They were over cooked and the dumpling wrapper stuck to the plate. IMO I didn't care for them too much. Roast pork bun was tasty but not enough meat inside. The shrimp siumai was kind of bland. Sesame balls were crispy and gooey inside with the bean paste. And the fish dumplings were moist and flavorful. The probably best dish was the crab soup dumplings. They were very tasty and flavorful soup broth inside. Overall, what we ordered was good but compared to sang kee's dim sum or Chinatown dim sum it was not up to that level. But good for the suburbs, I guess. I gave this place 3 stars because of the dumplings and because they were attentive to the table with refilling water and taking away empty dim sum plates. But what really disturbed me and my husband was the rush to pay the bill and leave. While I was still eating my sesame ball (last piece of food on the table), the server took away my plate. Also the check was given to us without us asking for it. And I was still eating the sesame ball. My husband gives his credit card and it was quickly swooped away. I was still eating and the server tried to take the check back, despite my husband not even signing the receipt yet. We just felt rushed and pushed out of the place so quickly. I ordered spicy crispy shrimp and it tasted like the top of the salt shaker fell off as they were making it. I never EVER complain about my food but it was an obvious mistake. I told the waiter and he said "yes, that's how it's made". I had my friend try it to make sure it wasn't just me and IT WAS NOT! She couldnt even swallow the shrimp and had to spit it out. We then told another girl that came to our table to ask how our meal was and she also said, "i don't know what I can do about it." My friend ordered shrimp fried rice and it came out wet and looking boiled - def not fried! I've attached a photo so you can see, I'm not being dramatic. Will never, ever be back here. I called to ask for my money back on the items they didn't give and the man who answered the phone called me a liar multiple times and refused to refund me unless I drove back over and accepted cash only! He yelled at me and told me he didn't believe me and that he was the manager. Hopefully his bosses see this review and know that he behaved unacceptably, all for like $10 of refunded money. Planned to meet my partner for lunch at Tom's dim sum mania next door for lunch but they were closed on that Monday so we opted to have lunch here. I've dined here for dinner twice before and had take out a handful of times- all items were okay but none stood out. After comparing the two dim sum places we decided a year ago to patronize the other place as they were often better, had a larger selection and had spicy soup dumplings. For lunch we ordered crab and pork soup dumplings, Singapore chow fun, scallion pancake and cold chicken with chili (app). The waiter asked if we were sure we wanted the chicken as it was a cold dish and we confirmed as I had had the dish elsewhere many times and knew it was cold poached chicken drowned in chili sauce/oil. We should have noted the waiters hesitance as the dish was terrible and nothing like what I've had anywhere else. We expected juicy poached chicken that had been sliced and doused with a savory chili oil sauce. The chicken we received looked old and dry around the edges and had obviously was not freshly sliced. We could see the desiccated fibers of the chicken which hadn't even been sliced through all the way and was difficult to pull apart. The sauce was tasty but could not make up for the awful texture of the chicken. We could not even eat half of the order. I promised to take my husband to another spot that does it right to make up for it as I was sharing this dish with him for the first time. The scallion pancakes were hot and crisp. The chow fun was excellent and we would order this again. The meat was tender and the sauce had a nice spice. The crab and pork dumplings had no visible crab inside the dumpling and a dried floof of shredded meat on top of the dumpling. No crab flavor detected. The stock inside was flavorful but just porky. Service was friendly and prompt, though the dining room could use some background music. We will stick with next door but have this as a back up but will order cautiously. read more

Excellent Dim Sum! Every bit as good as Chinatown, but without having to travel downtown. Their soup dumplings are tremendous. As are both the shanghai and Hong Kong Shumai. The staff is always friendly. The only thing that is less good than Chinatown is the price. This is not expensive by any means, it just costs more than similar items would in the city. But that's ok if you live near Media. It is typical for what that food would cost in Media, and if it costs more than Chinatown, that's your surcharge for not having to drive into the city. My only other warning is to stay away from the place RIGHT NEXT DOOR that has a similar name (the imposter location has lots of tacky banners. This is a lousy business tactic. If you are on state street, looking at the two restaurants, my recommendation only applies to the one on the left. read more

Have been meaning to check out Tom's for a while and finally got the chance this past Sunday night. We made a reservation just in case... and I'm glad we did. It was very busy for a Sunday night with only a couple tables open. I'm not a dim sum regular so I wasn't sure how much or what to order...but our server was full of recommendations, which I LOVE. We had the caviar dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings, pork soup dumplings, crab & cheese wontons, Shanghai shumai and the crispy shrimp entree. The dumplings were SO good...I'm not quite sure how they get the dough so soft. Our server even taught us the correct way to eat the pork soup dumplings. My personal favorites were the pork soup dumplings and the crispy shrimp entree. The shrimp was spicy even for my taste, but it was delicious. I'm glad our server talked us into trying that instead of general tso's. Other pro's---place is BYO and our check was only $45 for all of this! We haven't checked out the giant dim sum place only a few doors down. It seemed pretty flashy and more sports bar like. I think we'll stick with Tom's. read more

A quaint, little Shanghainese Dim Sum place nestled away in Media's small main street, this place is christened with its namesake in Philadelphia's Chinatown, and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. With the American public's new obsession with both Szechuan and Shanghai cuisine, this place does the job with its oily, single-bite goodies. Overall, nothing too stunning about the dishes here - it's your standard Shanghai Dim Sum cuisine, although I will note they are particularly oily here, probably better to suit the Media populace. I will say that the Beef Brisket Noodles stood out over the rest of the dishes, even the soup dumplings and pan fried buns. The noodles are made well, and have a great texture. The beef is flavorful along with the soup. The pan fried buns come in at a close second, though, most notably because they're incredibly easy to bite into. For a dim sum place, it's sufficient, considering how far away it is from downtown Philadelphia. Worth checking out, but I wouldn't say I was wow'd by anything here. read more

We dropped in on a Saturday night without a reservation hoping to get lucky. Who expects to get a table on a Saturday night - well, we do! The 15 minute wait was closer to 40. They take names and numbers from walk-ins, and actually call each number in order, and then wait for those that answer to return! Frustrating for those that wait in line, but fair (I guess). Be warned, the wait space is crowded and there are only 2 or 3 spare chairs. If only they had a bar. The food however is definitely worth the wait. Despite the name, Tom's reminds me more of a dumpling restaurant than Dim Sum. However, everything we had was really good (other than the scallion pancake, which was just so-so). The soup dumplings were excellent. Tom's does not serve alcohol, but does allow BYOB - we should have gone across the street to Trader Joes for a bottle or 2 while we waited, oh well. read more

So I went to the Media location instead of the Chinatown location because they have sit down seating. I ordered the Hot & Sour soup, Seaweed salad, Pork Soup Dumplings and the Szechuan Spicy beef. Being from St. Louis we are pretty particular about our Hot &Sour soup. This rendition will hang with anything in St. Louis and beat most of them. Seaweed salad was great and I don't believe it came out of a package. Soup dumplings were on par with the best ones I've ever had. The beef being the star attraction did not disappoint.
