If you aren't familiar you'll have to take some guesses on what dishes have certain textures or flavors but part of the fun is everyone trying parts of everyone else's dishes. The green beans are truly flavorful and a great burst of fresh fiber to pause in between all the rich dishes. It may sound basic but the scallion pancake was just so delicious, deeply crispy with the sweet sauce compliment. This is the first time I am leaving a review of this nature. I was dining at this restaurant when I watched a middle aged waitress with short hair practically yelling at a young man to leave a tip in front of everyone. He appeared to try to diffuse the situation and explain his side but she ignored him and demanded a tip. It was very uncomfortable and unprofessional on the waitress's part. I think this is wrong. You never know someone's situation and whether he had enough to pay for the tip. Terrible sight to see. I will not be returning. read more

My family (3 people) and I are new to the area and ordered a set of dumplings each, excited to try it. After ordering this the waitress (I don't know her name, but an older woman with short hair and glasses) rolled her eyes and walked away. I asked her later for straws, to which she rolled her eyes and returned with a single straw which she was holding with her bare hand on the straw hole itself and tossed it on the table. She continued to watch us from afar and talk to her coworkers. At the end she came back to the table, grabbed the menu we had set aside and shoved my purse off of it onto the table. Afterwards we paid our 30$ bill and left a zero dollar tip (because I personally don't believe in enabling this type of behavior). As we were walking out, she chased us and began to reprimand my husband and berate him in front of other customers saying that we HAVE to leave a tip for her and all the other employees. She continued to demand this and raised her voice at him in front of other customers as my husband explained the situation. I have NEVER experienced this level of disrespect and flat out rude behavior. I would avoid this restaurant and try any other of the plenty of options state street appears to offer. Before heading over to a show at the theater we went here for dinner, lots of seating and we were serviced right away. The menu has lots of options, especially for vegetarians. Our favorite was the general tso tofu because it was crispy. The scallion pancake was our second favorite followed by the pan fried vegetable dumplings because we didn't love the filling. We stopped by here today after a dr appt because we were able to park right in front. Turns out the parking gods led us to the right place. We ordered the soup dumplings, the seaweed salad, marinated cucumbers, pork and cabbage dumpling, pork pancakes, and sticky rice/pork in a lotus leaf. Gosh, everything was so good and if I lived in Media I would eat here a lot. I think my fave was the pork pancake or the soup dumplings. But everything else was a close second. We stopped by for Sunday lunch and even with a full house we were seated right away. From the first to last interaction, absolutely fantastic and attentive service from everyone. We ordered the Hong Kong Shui Mai, crispy turnip cake, spicy dumplings and Pork soup dumplings to give a good range of options. Good soup dumplings, great broth and flavor and didn't expect to have so many. The Spicy dumplings had a crispy bottom and such a fragrant filling. I prefer a thinner dumpling dough but it wasn't a dealbreaker at all. Pro Tip: Black vinegar at the table is a game changer, give it a shot if you haven't tried it yet! Supposedly, there is an unspoken feud between the two dim sum spots in Media, or so the local lore says...However, after coming to Dim Sum Mania several times, I still cannot get enough. It is a great place for lunch or dinner, with a menu extensive enough to try something different each time, or simply find your favorites and enjoy them over and and over. This is actually one of the few places I return to and order the same thing frequently, which for me, only speaks to the quality of what they do here. For me that is Shredded Pork Noodle Soup with Pickled Cabbage, a continual favorite that I cannot find anywhere but very specific places in Philly in Chinatown. It is perfectly served with hand drawn noodles and perfectly sour and sweet pickled cabbage. Just absolutely delicious. But the real secret about Dim Sum Mania is the perfect soup dumplings they have on offer, as well as the staff who is friendly and always encouraging people to take a step, even if just a small one, out of their comfort zone; even constructing dishes that are a fusion of what local palates may find more usual with traditional Szechuan flavors. The last time I was here, this exact thing happened to me when I was offered a new menu item that was velveted pork, onion, delicious red chilis, and other spices formed into perfectly pan fried meatballs in a savory umami-filled brown sauce. Adding to the uniqueness of the experience is a massive LED screen that has pan-Asian cooking programs on rotation, showcasing interesting preparation techniques and styles, and ingredients that many patrons may have never seen or enjoyed before. All this takes place right on State Street in downtown Media in a bright space with cantilevered doors that can be opened when it's nice outside and adds to the charm of not only the restaurant, but also much of the reason people love Media so much. Not only should you come here, but bring friends or family as it's a nice raucous spot for great conversation and for sharing tons of great food. So excited to have an alternate spot for dim sum in the burbs. You can make reservations too. We were greeted and seated right away. Water was served and our waiter came quickly to order our food on a tablet. Parking is in the street - so you may have to walk a bit as this area is busy with restaurants and Trader Joe's The restaurant is very open with a accordion window doors that brings a nice breeze and sunlight . Dim sum menu is not that extensive live Chinatown places but has the fave dishes . I ordered shrimp dumplings, bbq pork steamed buns, and pork shu mai. It's not that I want to piece this review together ... hopefully my words will be the glue that stick to your memory in case you visit Media Pennsylvania but frankly it was the tape that took this Dim Sum palace down a star. So, I have been considering Dim Sum Mania for "sum" time. I know, that was poor but I just couldn't help myself. And, upon viewing their menu I was thrilled with the choices and the prices. Soupy Dumpling for me please ... It's really a very appealing dining area that is both open and intimate. Clearly there was some thought to the design because it makes for a perfect location to enjoy quality dim sum as well as some traditional Chinese offerings. Service was prompt and pleasant. I didn't have any questions but I am pretty sure that if I had one or two or more that the attentive staff would have been able to answer them with a smile. I decided to choose Spring Rolls to go along with the dim sum option. Spring Rolls are usually one of those test an Asian restaurant out on a first visit choice. So, I place my order and then I noticed .... the SCOTCH ... ok, it's BYOB and I didn't bring any Scotch (More of a Whiskey man actually.) and no one had offered me a shot. There was SCOTCH TAPE covering the openings of every condiment on my table and on the table next to me. Yes, to access the soy sauce I had to peel back the SCOTCH TAPE ... YUCK!! EWWW!!! And, any other expressions you might think of but frankly it gets a bit worse ... one of the staff walked by and peeled away the tape on one condiment container right in front of me. Now, ok ... I understand that during non-business hours you don't want anything moving into the condiments on the tables but if you are choosing to use SCOTCH TAPE well then before you open your doors you should have a SCOTCH TAPE REMOVER assigned to insure that each little piece of tape is removed before diners sit down in the not so dim lit restaurant to wonder why SCOTCH TAPE is covering a container of sauce that will soon be on their food. There went one star POOF and I began to wonder ... I began to question ... what would the food be like. The SPRING ROLLS arrived with a decent dipping sauce but nothing out of the ordinary. So, I gave a lot of thought about these because they had traces of the cooking oil on them but it was a clean oil not from a fryer over laden with a week's worth of egg roll frying ... and the rolls were cripsy and most importantly very tasty. Not world beaters but lunch time satisfiers. I sat back and awaited the piece de resistance ... the soupy dumplings. The staff member approached carrying the steam basket ... I was so ready and I was so happy and these were so good and so filling that I hardly noticed the SCOTCH TAPE .... ok, I couldn't help but continue to notice the SCOTCH TAPE but my goodness I wanted more of these ... but they filled me up ... I was happy and you can tape me saying that ... well, unless you know me you can't uh tape me and there wasn't enough SCOTCH TAPE to do more than cover those small openings on the condiments not that I noticed the SCOTCH TAPE at all. Believe me ... I will be back and I will come back in a hungry mood because I want to try more of the dim sum at DIM SUM MANIA and as I looked across at another diner's Chinese meal it really looked good too ... I think I am going to have to return extremely hungry and hopefully if I arrive later in the day the SCOTCH TAPE, which I hardly noticed will already have been removed by the restaurant's SCOTCH TAPE remover! We have had dinner here now twice and we are huge fans! The GF and I split everything and keep raving about Dim Sum Mania! We both love Dumplings! The Pork Soup dumplings were to die for! We also enjoyed Chicken Dumplings and the Pork & Chive Pan Fried Dumplings. The pork fried rice was the best we both have ever had in our lives. So are the scallion pancakes! It's BYO even though we have forgotten both times we have dined in! Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and pointed us in the right direction on menu options. Can't wait to go back to try more of the delicious food. Doesn't hurt that I work a few blocks away and will probably bringing home takeout home on some nights! We ordered, beef noodle soup, Singaporean noodle, soup dumpling , pork spare ribs and some veggies off the menu the server recommended. All the foods were tasteless. The spareribs were drowned in oyster sauce, and fluffed up with bok choy nips , the Singaporean noodles were hard with cold protein, the beef noodle soup noodles were hard and undercooked, and the vegetables off the menu had globs of salt . Like who cooked this terrible meal?? He / she should be fired !! To make things worse, the cups were sticky and chopsticks dirty. I've been going to this place since the year they opened and used to think it was amazing, but the last couple of times I've been, I have noticed a significant decline in the food. Last night put the final stamp on it though--the steamed chicken dumplings were rubbery from being overcooked, the chicken on a stick was over seasoned with something (maybe star anise?) which gave it a black licorice flavor, and the main dish portions have gotten smaller. Although they do still have very good pork sticky buns and the flavor of their general tsos chicken is quite tasty. The two main issues we had with the place last night were the tea and the service. After pouring a cup of tea and taking a sip, I thought the taste was off with a pool water taste and odor of chlorine bleach, so I opened the pot to find lots of bubbles and a stronger odor. I flagged a server and told him about it, he tried it (which I wouldn't have advised) claimed it was fine and gave us a new pot which had even more bubbles in it and still smelled of chlorine bleach. Obviously we didn't drink it. The photo is after the second tea pot had been sitting at the table for the entire dinner, so about 30-45 minutes after settling and still bubbles. Maybe some soap was left in the pot but hopefully not in the urn. Either way, the only bubbles I want in tea are boba. The other unfortunate event was near the end of our meal when one of the servers proceeded to berate the table behind us for what sounded like a mix up with their order--Yelling at them and claiming they ordered something which they didn't seem sure they ordered. I've never been at a restaurant and witnessed this level of hostility happen so it was quite shocking. Hopefully it was just an off night for them as it was very busy, but these two things should be looked into. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch Sunday afternoon. The place was filled with people but wasn't too crowded. We were able to order a bunch of dishes to try and everything came out hot and super fresh. We got the fried shrimp balls, scallion pancakes, Shanghai dumplings, shrimp crepes and crab/pork soup dumplings. The soup dumplings were pretty good! I liked the broth from them but wanted a bit more crab vs. pork. The scallion pancakes were okay. They were a bit over fried. 10/22/2021: my wife and I ordered a quick to go order from Dim Sum Mania. The order came out as soon as I stepped into the restaurant. So the whole process only took 10minutes. It was $21 for Beef Chow Ho Fun and Chinese Brocoli with Garlic. We had some leftover stirred fried rice and pork buns at home and the two dishes from Dim Sum Mania complemented the leftovers pretty well. The Beef Ho Fun was really tasty! For $11 the taste and the portion were excellent! I would highly recommend this simple dish! The Chinese broccoli with Garlic was good. Nothing too special about it. For $9 the portion and the taste was good. I would rate the whole 10-minute experience as efficient and the taste for $21 as worthy of a deal! 10/10 for the Beef Ho Fun and 8.5/10 for the Chinese Broccoli with Garlic. read more

Man, did their portions get smaller and they have gotten quite pricey! I've been here numerous times, and although most dishes are always good, there's always 1 or 2 that aren't the same. One time, the sticky rice in banana leaf went bad. Another time, the cardamon on the chicken stick was so strong and the seaweed tasted fishy. A few times, the soup dumplings rarely had any soup in it. And this last time, my daughter just flat out said the stir fried hand made noodles tasted weird and didn't like it. Not exactly sure what they did differently to the sauce, but it was strong enough where my daughter wouldn't touch it (and she's a big noodle fan!) Service is always nice and they're quick, so if you want a quick lunch, this is the spot. read more

Dim Sum Mania is one of those places that is more about the atmosphere than the food, but they still have a solid menu. It's a little whitewashed but it's also in Media, so... I dragged my hetero life partner out for a midday lunch here as part of the "let's go check out all those bookmarked places in the greater Philly metro area" checklist. We ordered a solid variety of dim sum and everything was good. I would pass on the cute lotus buns (the picture in the menu suckered us into trying them) on a second go around though. Steamed pork buns, dumplings, and the rice noodle with the sauce were all great and worth ordering again.
