I went in last night just to please my sushi craving, I went in and noticed the names of the sushi were a bit different and they were asking if I wanted to see the special menu. I am the type of guy that likes to see the pictures of what im ordering. What I ordered: Special Eel roll and a Baked Scallop California Roll The baked eel special was really good but the BSCR was not quite what I expected, not bad but not the best still good though. They didnt have it on the menu and because of that they priced is 50 cents more expensive then any sushi on the menu it ended up being $12.50 for the BSCR and 12 for the Baked Eel Special Service: There were two females there and they were so nice and thankful, even though I got my sushi togo I still gave them a $5 tip on a 23 dollar bill. This used to be one of the best sushi restaurants around Newbury Park area, but it has recently deteriorated to the point where we are not coming back ever again. The food has always been pricey, but at least it had good service and excellent variety. After countless visits to Tomodachi in Newbury Park, I am finally getting around to posting a review, which I should have done long ago. This sushi restaurant is without a doubt the best sushi, and specialties, in the Conejo area. The fish is always fresh and the presentation is fantastic! I have tried all of the sushi restaurants in the area and not a one compares to the taste and quality of Tomodachi. When I go out for sushi, there is no other consideration Its Tomodachi. Period. Try the spicy tuna biscuits, jalapeño yellowtail, any of the combination dinners, and lobster soup. All at a fair prices and again, top quality all the way around. They also have a great happy hour! The top choices for rolls, sushi and other dishes at huge discounts. They even have a reverse happy hour that begins at 8:30pm on some nights, which I have used for my late evening sushi cravings. As far as service and staff, I have always been treated very well by a friendly staff and have had excellent service. I noticed that some of the reviews mention service issues, however I have never experienced any issues here. All positive and deserves the 5 star rating that I have given It. read more

Sometimes good food just isn't worth the hassle of having to deal with bad staff. I've gone into this place twice and both times had the same experience. We were seated and then ignored for a good 15 - 20 minutes. Seriously, they didn't even give us water. We tried to be patient, but there were only two other tables so it wasn't what we'd call busy. Employees were standing around, ignoring us, until I finally asked the hostess to find us a server. She looked put out. The food took FOREVER to reach us and since it was our lunch hour we knew we were in trouble. We asked for our bill not long after that but literally didn't get it for another 30 minutes. By then we were very angry and when we complained they looked at us like we were talking in tongues. I gave it two shots and it was the same thing so I will not be going back. If you go, just make sure you have a good 2 - 3 hour window in which to eat. You're gonna need it. read more

I went today hoping for a nice lunch. I sat down at 1:05 pm didn't get a drink until 1:30 pm. The server apologized for it taking so long but nothing to recognize a persons time waiting and waiting for a simple ca roll. The food was okay and service was incredibly slow. The young girl was nice but forgot simple chop stick soy sauce items. After an hour of waiting and my daughter saying "I'm hungry " it was ridiculous how long two rolls took. The roll tasted a bit fishy the miso was good but not worth such an extreme wait. If you can offer a complimentary miso soup for waiting an hour for two rolls that would be nice after a 50$ lunch. I won't come back for a while if ever. Another guy left by me also. Also no draft beer available like normal. The girl gave a to go container with a black hair on it which was super gross! This is a tough review for me. First of all, the place is very cute and the food and service was marvelous. And i would recommend it 100%, but unfortunately the meal made me and my sister sick the next day- and we know it was from this restaurant because my sister fasted for 24 hours right up until this meal. i know this kind of stuff happens, but i want to be truthful. read more

Heard great things about this restaurant but was very disappointed. Terrible service. Sushi did not seem as fresh as they claimed. The restaurant wasn't full and we didn't get greeted for over 15 minutes till we had to stop a server and ask for water and give them our order sheet. They never once asked how our meal was, didn't bring eel sauce after asking so i had to go to the sushi bar and get it myself, and our food took over the span of 30 minutes for our full order to arrive. So I went in to this place with my friend at 5pm when they first opened. We only came here because I used some reward points for restaurant.com and got a $25 gift certificate. Well we where the only people in the place since they just open which is fine, but the young blonde surfer waiter didn't seem to know how to treat guest. He talked to us like he was too cool for school and his service was beyond the worst. A waiter at Denny's would have done a better job! Food wasn't great it looked good but the taste didn't match. Tasted unfresh and old. We had to order a good amount because our gift certificate stated we had to have a min purchase of $50. Which wasn't hard because everything on the menu was way overpriced!!! Worst thing we ordered was a tako salad it tasted like the one I can get at the japanese market down the street and it was twice the price. There was nothing special about this place except the nice decor and even at that our table was sticky and hadn't been cleaned up from there lunch service. First time here, sushi isn't bad. Nothing impressive. But oh holy awkwardness!!!! Our server was so strange. We went in an hour before closing. We were the only people in the restaurant. The server did not like that our two year was there, told us to have her sit down while she was in the booth next to me standing on the booth seat--- she's 2!! Next, he instructed us to not to put the edamame pods on a napkin but rather in a bowl... We used the first bowl to put the soy beans in for the kid. We eat out all the time with our 2 year old. She is well behaved and quiet, just squirmy! Nothing out of the norm, if anything she's tamer than most. This guy also almost lost his sh** with soy sauce splashes on the table. Either he is extremely OCD or just freaking weird. Either way we won't be back. No refills on our water. The ice tea I ordered never came. We were informed we needed to pay because they were closing in 10 minutes--- we actually had been waiting for the check for about 10 minutes. The service was ridiculous!!! I have never left a place and Have said "nope!! Won't be back there" It was just that bad. read more

Fish is always fresh, rolls are tasty, and service is fairly speedy. Their lunch and happy hour specials provide good discounts to regular menu prices. Standouts are the ago tako (cold octopus appetizer) and the Hawaiian roll. Once loved this place but now will not come back. I just came to this restaurant and there was no one at the front to greet anyone, and no staff walking around the restaurant but the restaurant had a couple people in it. Sitting at the front table with a Japanese family that look like they were waiting to order stuff but nobody has come to their table to take their order. The chef saw me waiting and did not send anyone out to greet me and get me a table. I stood there for 5 or 10 minutes no one ever came so I walked out. They obviously do not want the business if they don't have someone ready to help their clients. :-( read more

Surprisingly! this place was very good. My bf and I stopped by here from a weekend of backpacking trip. We hit the 405S Thousand Oaks traffic heading home to San Clemente. We took the Wendy Dr exit and filled up on gas and spontaneously just GPS the nearest Sushi joint. Tomodachi was only 1 drwy away. At first, we thought it closed down because there weren't many cars parked in the lot. It turned out we were at the back lot of the restaurant. Yes, the service was a little too slow, but we werent in a hurry to leave either. There was only 1 sushi chef taking orders of the restaurant. Later in the evening, the place started filling up. Tomo, the other Sushi Chef, took the rest of our orders. We asked him what his fav sushi was and recommended the Sea urchin, Santa Barbara local catch. It tasted sooooooo fresh! Usually I dont order it because it always tasted low-tide. This was very fresh! I also ordered Mushroom soup (YUMMY!) It's better than cream of mushroom. It tasted like they fire roasted some exotic shrooms and minced it to blend with the soup. They also had a Maine Lobster Chowder, which I'm gonna have to try on my next visit. $2.50 Kirin Draft Beer! Can't beat that deal! We ordered all Sushi pieces: Sea Eel Halibut Fatty Tuna Yellowtail Sea Urchin Red Snapper Spanish Mackeral Blue Crab It's always good to try new places... cuz u may never know- you just might hit a jackpot! Best sushi ever!! The yellowtail Jalapeno sashimi is amazing! So good that we my husband and I asked them to make it into a cut roll for us which we have named the "awesome roll"! Great service and better sushi. If you live in Newbury you have to try Tomodachi. Get the 911 Roll and the Red Dragon, drink a few beers and watch a game. Being a Sushi addict for 20+ years, I have to say I am impressed. Fish is ALWAYS fresh which is really the main concern. Roll variety is above average and the chefs are top notch. WORST SERVICE EVER! We waited over 40mins for a California Roll and Shrimp Tempura Roll and never received it. I asked the waiter for a time estimate about 25mins in and he never came back with an answer. Finally at the 40min mark I saw the table behind us get their Bento boxes. They had come in behind us and were being served. When I asked why we hadn't been served I was given the answer that they ordered food from the back kitchen. Honestly one of my favorite spots in Newbury park and thousand oaks for sushi. Frequented often and never disappointed. The only thing I've ever not liked was the jalapeno yellowtail because the sauce overpowered the fish but you can just get it on the side. They take a lot of care in presentation and quality even in their to go orders which are always beautifully wrapped with all amenities. They have the best eel roll I've ever had anywhere, it literally melts in your mouth. The quality of their sashimi and fish is also quite good. Definitely best in town. read more

Went to Tomodachi because my old sushi chef from Kaminari in Westlake Village is wielding his knife there now since Kaminari closed. The attraction at Kaminari was the variety and top quality of the fish. Tomodachi is much more a mainstream sushi bar with the standard fishes catering to the California Roll crowd. No tuna toro, yellowtail toro, Spanish mackerel, etc. Everything was pretty standard and not distinguishing in every way. All in all, we were extremely disappointed in what appears to be just another sushi bar. read more

The key point it the fish was very fresh. With the sushi they also did not give more rice than fish. They had a reasonable selection but not the best I have seen, still great for Newbury Park. We had the Hawaiian Ceviche appetizer and really liked it. The spicy tuna hand rolls were also good and had a reasonable amount of fish in them. The other fish we had was all very good. Based on the reviews I was not expecting good service, but I must say we got really good service. What we didn't like was the amount of sauce that was on a the rolls we got. We got the Eel Special rolls which came in a puddle of "sweet eel sauce" which was too heavy and too sweet so you could barely taste the eel. Next tried the crunchy spicy tuna roll. It had the same "sweet eel sauce" on it; if it wasn't well it sure tasted the same. Between the crunchy stuff and the sauce it was hard to taste the fish. I have been to many sushi restaurants including many in Japan but this was the heaviest sweetest eel/brown sauce I have had. I will go there again and probably order the Eel Special roll again, but not the crunchy roll, asking for the sauce on the side, or more likely no sauce at all. read more

Plus they have creativity and style in their presentation. I was just there last weekend and the service was fantastic. I've always had great service here so I was surprised to read that some reviewers didn't like the service. We had the Seared Albacore Sashimi, the Mama San Roll and Dynamite Roll. They brought me enough wasabi and the fish seemed quite fresh, which is rare in the Conejo Valley. Ordered to go and they were very attentive and nice but the meal was pretty bad. The sushi rolls were loose and rice was hard. My wife isn't a sushi lover so I got her the teriyaki chicken and beef combo and the beef really chewy.
