Ocean Roll (Cucumber Wrap)
Catherine N.

Isaki has great prices for a lunch around Amgen! For lunch, I frequently sit at the bar and order an Ocean Roll with albacore substituted with crab salad. The cucumber wrap is tasty and goes well with the karashi sauce. I also tried a bit of the spicy tuna roll from my colleague and it was pretty good! I like that it has a decent amount of spice, that was well-balanced by the sweetness of the sushi rice. Service is always fast and friendly and the portions are quite generous! So, this is my go-to spot for sushi in this area and for a quick lunch.

Came here at chance as I was in town for work for the week. I came back 3 times! Best sushi I've had in a very long time. Service was always quick and amazing! The staff would remember what I liked and would recommend things for me to try. Masa (the sushi chef) was such a great guy to talk to! I have definitely made a friend and can't wait to visit again. The vibe was great even when it was a packed day. I will miss this place

The ocean roll was delicious but hard to keep together to eat with chopsticks. Both salmon special and dragon roll were delicious (and I may have mislabeled them). We also ordered a plate of salmon sashimi and were so pleasantly surprised to see 6 pieces instead of the usual 5. (We didn't have to cut one in half! We're both serious about our sashimi! lol!) Great service. We'll be back to try all the rolls!

My first time here. This sushi bar may be small, but it truly is a local gem! An independent and very authentic sushi restaurant. Fresh fish, genuine staff, excellent selection, great daily specials, nice staff, clean environment, sufficient parking, pleasant environment! Only one issue. They do not serve fresh crab and only offer imitation crab. Most sushi bars identify it by calling it "Krab" I turned it down. It is what it is. I'm looking forward to coming back again! Thank you Isaki!

One of the best sushi spots I've discovered. The stuffed squid was out of this world--tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. It's a must-try if you're even a little adventurous. The no rice rolls were a total game changer. So fresh, light, and packed with flavor. You don't miss the rice at all. Each bite was clean and balanced, clearly crafted with care and creativity. Service was fantastic and the atmosphere was cozy yet modern. Isaki Sushi is the kind of place that turns first-timers into regulars. @sushitraveler

~ SUSHI ON MY MIND, SUSHI ON MY RADAR ~ We stumbled upon Isaki while heading to our regular sushi spot and decided to give it a shot. I'm always in the mood for sushi, so it's great to have a new nearby option! There is plenty of seating for both small and medium-sized groups, and the interior is clean and minimalist, which brings a sense of ease and calmness. While we didn't order much, I really enjoyed the fresh scallop and albacore - they were very fresh and melted easily in my mouth. The menu is pretty extensive and has a variety of rolls. From what I saw on other tables, the rolls are generously sized. The service was fast and welcoming. It was clear that the owner and staff were genuinely excited and appreciative of each customer. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'm excited to try more dishes from the menu!

New sushi spot in Newbury Park - Isaki Sushi. Yay! I was eager to try this spot as it's not far from where I live and I'm always on the hunt for a new good restaurant, especially sushi. This restaurant replaced an older sushi restaurant RIP. The decor was inviting with welcome banners outside. I like what they did with the inside. It's very clean and spacious (last place was a little cluttered). They did a good job of bringing this place back to life with new lighting and a refreshed looked. Plenty of booths and small tables. Next time I'll definitely sit at the sushi bar. Happy hour Monday to Saturday is 7:45 to closing I believe the sign said. Staff here were so hospitable and welcoming. You can tell they are super excited about their new business and they make you feel so special. The woman playing hostess and server was so sweet. Seriously the best vibes here! I believe one of the owners was also sitting near us working and when we left he gave us a huge thank you for stopping in on their opening week. They had plenty of staff working the sushi bar and kitchen, I appreciated this as they got the food out quickly. All in all the service was definitely 5 stars from start to finish. The menu was also very impressive. So many appetizers, specialty rolls, lunch/dinner bentos and of course sashimi. Prices were average but i definitely ate well (and a lot) for $45 after tip. Pretty standard for a nicer sushi dinner. They do have good combos if you want a cheaper meal but something still filling. The sushi here is extremely fresh and I was impressed with the raw sushi cuts. The nigiri was very substantial so for that I will say it's a good deal. The salmon and yellowtail melted in my mouth. The only fish we thought was basic was the tuna. Just a little too firm. However the other 5 different nigiri pieces we got totally slapped, delicious! The rolls here are also large and well constructed. My table ordered two specialty rolls and we were happy with them. Again, you really only need one per person if you are getting nigiri as the portions are great. I accidentally ordered a roll with cooked salmon (this was my bad bc I really don't like cooked fish on sushi) but even then the roll was so good i honestly wasn't bothered and was able to eat it. Normally I couldn't but thankfully the freshness of the rest of the ingredients and the sauces made it a great combination, even when I didn't read the menu right lol. My friend was happy with her roll. You definitely need to give this spot a try and to come out to support as they are a new business totally killing it their first week of opening! Woohoo good job. The service was impeccable and everyone was so kind. The pace of the food was really good and the quality of the fish is there. Happy to have a new great sushi spot on this side of town. I'll be back soon and hopefully with some more friends!

This is a great little sushi restaurant. Clean, comfortable with very good service. We went for lunch on a Saturday. The sushi is very fresh although not too creative. We definitely will be back to this new local gem. There are vegetarian options as well.

Solid new spot! Giving them 4 stars for now. The sushi is priced low because they have a grand opening special going on. Will definitely be back to try them again.

Unfortunately, our experience fell short. The food was only average, and the service was poor, with long waits and inattentive staff.

I was so stoked to revisit this, once great, sushi restaurant…read more Then things became interesting. As I stepped in the restaurant, there was no one to greet me and take me to my seat. I waited for about 5 minutes until the lone sushi chef gestured that I sit at the bar across from him. There was a menu and sushi checklist waiting for me. I already knew what I wanted, and selected the coordinating boxes. The waitress took my drink order and instructed me to give the completed sheet to the chef. He informed me they did not have the salmon roe, so no problem. But then I took the sheet back and noticed he replaced my bluefin tuna with regular tuna, without asking or telling me. They were also out of quail egg. So far .. not so good. I mentioned then if he could make my smelt egg roll without rice and he said yes. Thinking he would wrap it in seaweed, he scooped out two lemon halves and served the smelt egg in two lemon halves. Frankly, the terrible presentation wasn't the issue, it was the chef's lack of experience and practicality. You should be able to eat an egg roll in one bite. He should know that. When I asked him how he thought I should eat it, he said I should scoop it out with my fingers. Wow. Really? When I asked for a small spoon from the waitress, it never came. My hot green tea was lukewarm and tasteless. The restaurant itself was clean but the bar counter was a little sticky. The yellowtail fish was good and fresh. Otherwise, I do not believe I will be returning, due to such deplorable customer service. I do not enjoy writing poor reviews, but was not expecting this place to fall from grace so fast. So disappointed. Kanpai !

~ SMALL SPACE, BIG FLAVOR, A HIDDEN GEM ~…read more Gotetsu is one of those blink and you'll miss it spots, but once you're inside, you know you've found something sooo special!! Cozy, intimate, and very much a hole in the wall izakaya, this place is all about authentic Japanese flavors and perfectly grilled skewers. There is NO sushi here (they make that very clear), just kushiyaki, small plates, and goooood vibes. I've never been to Japan (yet), but I would imagine this is what it would be like walking into a small mom and pop shop there. The open kitchen is tiny but fun to watch, and from pretty much any seat you can see your food being made. It's a GREAT date night spot, order a bunch of dishes and share everything so much fun. We came for dinner and with a rotating menu of skewers and specials we were satisfied and it kept things interesting! Lunch is more limited, with preset options, but the quality still hits. The donburi is solid, the chicken curry is comforting (could use a little more protein), and the skewers, especially pork belly, chicken & onion, and meatballs, are seasoned and grilled really well. Veggie skewers like zucchini and brussels sprouts are simple but still tasty. At dinner, my husband and I loved the spicy garlic edamame, chicken thigh with yuzu pepper, ribeye skewer, gyoza, and the yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball with a crispy outside). Pro move: dip the onigiri into the leftover spicy edamame sauce. Trust. Ordering is easy with scan-and-pay, the owner is hands-on, and you can feel the care put into every dish. Take it easy with the ordering (they are typically skewer by skewer because you can easily rack up a hefty bill!) If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience in Ventura, focused on flavor, not trends, Gotetsu absolutely delivers.
