We visited this sushi restaurant on a Friday evening with my friend. As soon as we walked in, the sushi chef greeted us very politely and warmly. For a moment we had the feeling that the evening would be great. The place looked very clean and even a little bit glamorous, so we thought we had chosen a really good spot. Unfortunately, our impressions changed as soon as we started ordering. We ordered a salad, a sushi roll, and monkfish liver. The monkfish liver tasted so "authentic" that it felt like it had just been taken straight out of a can. It definitely did not taste like something that had been prepared in that kitchen. From the beginning to the end of our visit, we never received water. When we asked for wasabi and ginger, the waitress told us that they would bring it when the sushi arrived. We repeated our request for ginger, but the answer was exactly the same. When the roll finally arrived, it looked like someone might have started eating it yesterday and they simply decided to give it another chance today. It wasn't really sliced so much as it was spread across the plate. On the very edge of the plate there was a tiny bit of ginger and a tiny bit of wasabi. Both looked like they might have been borrowed from someone else's plate. When I looked at the waitress questioningly, she explained that if we wanted more wasabi and ginger, we could pay extra and they would bring more. I checked the rating later and somehow it has four stars. I'm giving it two stars -- and only because the sushi chef was very polite when we arrived and the place was clean inside. read more

It bears repeating--Mitsu-San is the king of sushi. I'm not sure how long Mitsu-San has been serving heaven on a tiny dish, 30, maybe 40 years? It's only gotten better. He must be highly respected at the market because the fish is consistently perfect--texture and taste--and turned into something worthy of dreams and the price. Time waits for no man and he won't be there forever, so splurge on yourself for as long as you can. There is nothing like Mitsu-san's food and there never will be again. read more

I first reviewed Kanda Sushi 14 years ago but my experience with Mitsu goes back at least 25 years. He was the best then and he has never lost a beat. The sushi at Kanda is as good as you would find in Japan. It is totally authentic. If you read an occasional review that is less than 5 stars, you know that writer has never eaten sushi in Japan and likely came in looking for a Rocket Roll. I had lunch here today with some friends. This was some of the best sushi I've had in a very long time, maybe ever. The fish is so fresh, and the quality is so outstanding, it just melts in your mouth like butter. The chef makes everything himself, and it is all like little plates of beautiful jewels, total art. The ratio of fish and rice is spot on, it's not a giant gob of rice with every piece, it's just perfect. It is spotlessly clean, with great customer service, and a terrific ambience overall. Very authentic Japanese sushi. I am bummed I didn't know about Kanda earlier. If you order frilly rolls, this is not your place. If you enjoy nigiri this is THE spot. We sat at the sushi bar and the owner made our food. He was delightfully kind and we let him take the reins. Snapper, mackerel, amberjack, toro, yellowtail, scallop, uni, salmon, barracuda, all sushi style and it was epic. Fish is high quality, and fresh. We went last night (Saturday) and it was so empty from the parking lot, we thought they might be closed. Asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar because it was completely unoccupied. She showed us the sign saying "3 pieces per person minimum to sit at the bar." Uh yeah, that's not a problem. Of course, we ordered Omakase and we were guided through a magical offering of seafood sorcery, rivaled only by Shiro's in Seattle (trained by Jiro himself). I felt guilty, like we had stumbled into a secret wonderland made just for us. All of the good reviews here are true. These folks are magic. If you love good sushi, just go. Thank you, chefs! I ate at the sushi bar during lunch on a Friday. If you ever ate at Sugarfish, the quality here is comparable or better, and the prices are very reasonable considering how good the quality is. The albacore, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail were all truly exceptional. There are traditional hand rolls and sushi rolls, but this is not the place to go to for rolls with sauces or mayo on them, the sushi chef here is a bit of a purist. There are plenty of tables, high chairs for small children, and plenty of bar seating. I would recommend Kanda to satisfy the need for solid sushi. read more

Great service and nice quality sushi! We tried Kanda for the first time last night as our favorite sushi restaurant was recently closed. Overall, I would rate the food and service both solid 4 stars. The restaurant is located in a strip mall on Thousand Oaks Blvd and parking spaces are ample. The restaurant appeared to have been recently renovated with nice bar sitting and a nice dining room. As for the food, the restaurant serves many traditional Japanese sushi. We ordered nigiris the live shrimp, live scallops, Spanish mackerel, toros, halibut, salmon and also a king crab roll. The fish tasted fresh and I love that the sushi wasn't loaded with a lot of rice or sauces that would drown the authentic taste of the fresh fish. The service was good and our waitress was very attentive. The food was served fairly fast. As for the cost, most nigiri was about $7-$8 per order but the toro nigiri was $25. We felt the toro tasted ok and we liked it better at our previous restaurant. The king crab roll was $17 and it contained both real crab and some fish cakes. i heard good things about this place but after this experience I won't be returning. The fish was just ok, nothing special quality wise and very small pieces. The ambiance was fine for a mid-tier sushi spot, but the real kicker was the service. Sat at the sushi bar first and tried to order a side of rice to which we were told we weren't allowed to order rice at the sushi bar (wtf?!), and we had to sit at a table. *moved to table. Asked for rice again, the waitress brought a small, half filled bowl of what looked like old rice and said that's all the rice they had left. How do you run out of rice at a sushi bar and still stay open?? She also did not replace our napkins or utensils, which took forever for us to get her attention just to replace. We ordered a few pieces of sushi and a few drinks which all took forever and were underwhelming once they arrived. Sushi tasted bland and were very small, the hand rolls were the only decent item. The poor waitress seemed like she was the only one working and was overwhelmed even though there were only like 3 tables occupied in the entire place. I think this is a management issue, but it took forever to get even basic accommodations to the point where we were almost ready to just walk out. Bill ended up being over $100 for some of the most mediocre sushi ive ever had paired with some of the worst service I've ever experienced. i wanted to like this place, but this ended up being one of the worst sushi experiences I've had in a while. Save your money and go to Sushi Raku in Agoura Hills instead. They are consistently good quality and reasonably priced. read more

Our first time here as we continue to search for a quality sushi restaurant in town. Definitely more authentic than most places, however, the trade-off is the absence of colorful and varied rolls. The Toro typically is a good indicator, and it was just okay. Service was gracious and slow, but a nice slow. Portions were just right. Food was tasty. We called to make a reservation for 8, the lady who picked up the phone said they don't take reservations on the weekends; I said, alright, we will just walk in she said okay. We arrived and she took us to the back and there were 4 big tables, but she put in 1 big and 1 small table. We said, we are not going to fit -- if it's possible to have 2 big tables she said no, she can't put 2 big tables together. It's not like there's other people waiting to get a table. We were the only ones in there and a few people at the bar. She was very rude and condescending towards us. Also, she said, it's not a family restaurant and they only accept parties of 6 or less. Chef Mitsu and his team know about sushi, service, and a lovely dining experience. His knife skills and perfect garnishes present sushi in a simple yet dynamic way that you won't really find in a lot of other sushi spots in Ventura County. Kanda has a warm atmosphere that is clean and intimate, perfect for a date or special occasion. That being said, I've been here countless times when the place is packed, when the place is empty, sat at the bar, sat at a table. It doesn't really matter, the experience is always consistent and the sushi tastes great. I don't know what some of these pleb reviewers are blathering on about (not a real sushi restaurant [then what is it?] / Mitsu isn't Japanese [big lol] / fish is not fresh) but wow I am dying over here...you can't please everybody right? Came for a team lunch with a group of 6, and we ordered an assortment of nigiri ranging from the seared scallops, to yellowtail, unagi, toro, salmon, uni, sweet shrimp, and EVERYTHING was so incredibly delicious and fresh! My favorites were probably the seared scallops and the crispy shrimp heads that come with the shrimp nigiri. It is a bit pricier than other sushi joints in the area (like Sushi Oaks or Sumo Sushi) but it is a notch above and you get what you pay for.
