We had much to celebrate for, after a tumultuous 1st half of the year. We chose Kaze for this special occasion. The word wonderful does not fully describe the experience. There is no sign in front of the restaurant, only a lone bonsai, inviting us in. The minimalistic entry actually stir excitement and anticipation in us. Once inside, we were greeted by the hostess who meticulously go over the comments that we made during reservation and ensured that all food allergies were noted and she assured us that there would be none in our meals. Then there were rounds of delicious sake and the guests mingled before the dinning experience begin. Once inside, we see our names and for some, the occasion they are celebrating for. The staff member were very friendly. They greeted each of us and congratulated those who are celebrating special occasions. The food was amazing. Each was prepared with perfection, both flavors and presentation. There were 19 courses, the flavors are diverse, the ingredients are high-end, with unconventional twist, After each satisfying bite, we keep anticipating for the next delight until the very last dish. The sake pairing was wonderful and the mocktail was very good with the food too. The service was excellent. I was delighted that when I returned from the restroom, my napkin was folded neatly waiting for me. This shows their attention to details. We enjoyed mingling with the staff, they were all very warm and obviously love what they do. They made the environment so welcoming that all the guests are ver relaxed and have enjoyable conversations. I am so glad that TO has such an elevated dinning experience. Kaze was amazing, perhaps the best meal I've ever had. First, I recommend you save your appetite. I googled it and found a comprehensive regimen for a Kaze omakase specifically. To summarize, a small, high protein low carb breakfast and lunch, a brisk walk in the afternoon, two glasses of water 3 hours before the meal and no water two hours before the meal. It worked! I don't think there's any other way I could have handled 19 courses. There's plenty of parking in the lot. Being speakeasy style, there is no name anywhere, just an unmarked door. Our hostess was standing outside, otherwise we would have had trouble finding it. It is two doors east of Nothing Bundt Cakes. Once inside, you're invited to sit in the lounge. They offer you a complimentary "splash" of either sake or a non-alcoholic mocktail. My "splash" of sake ended up being two shots since it was discreetly refilled while I wasn't looking. Once invited in the bar restaurant you find your name cards. My son's said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY DYLAN!" A sweet touch. The staff introduced themselves. There are six of them. The founder/head chef Sean Balanon is the one looking like a Filipino body builder. They are all so friendly and young. Pretty sure I am a decade or two older than any of them. Then came the food. REMEMBER TO PACE YOURSELF! "This is a marathon, not a sprint!", what AI implored earlier that day. The palate cleanser was refreshing and a great start. Then came a variety of hot plates. The signature dish was the potato soufflé with uni and caviar. Sublime. They said each one takes a hour to make . This actually doesn't seem that long. It would take me several hours to make. AI had suggested that I eat this course in particular very slowly. It's hard to eat each bites slowly though. They are all so delicious. I'd say that the best courses were the potato soufflé, the ceviche and the duo of toros. The nigiri was all outstanding. Each had its own unique spread and / or topping. All higher end cuts, like perch or kinmedai (golden eye snapper). I love yellowtail, salmon and albacore but you'll get none of that here, for good reason. I could go through each course and comment but suffice it to say it was all sublime. There wasn't a course I'd skip in the future, even pacing myself. I will say that the porridge was delicious but very rich, particularly at that stage of the dinner. I still ate most of it though. It had a sweet taste that I loved. Throughout the dinner it was nice to get to know the chefs. They are all so warm and gracious hosts, even while bustling around each other behind the bar to get each beautiful course out at the right moment/pace. When it was done they invited us to stay as long as we'd like (possible due to the later 8:30 seating.) Being in a food coma we were ready to get home. Oh, and here is the answer to your burning question that no other review has: it's $225 per person, not including tax or tip. The pre-dinner sake and the still or sparkling water is included. This is a bargain compared to other similar next-level restaurants that are Michelin starred. Kaze will get its star in no time, I'm sure of it. Then the price will go way up. Get it while it's relatively affordable, people! This is really a special place and I can't wait to go back. I had to keep repeating that as we went through the courses as I usually finding myself struggling from holding up what's in front of me to all the dining experiences I've had in my head. Kaze is truly an exceptional omakase experience. A place like this is almost out of place in a town like Thousand Oaks, however, absolutely needed and welcomed. Without going into too much detail, you can find that the dishes were well thought out and balanced. I must say that I did not find myself expecting to enjoy that grittiest, beach like horchata mocktail, but I'm sure that was on purpose (right?). I almost hate to go through and review the individual bites for a place where it doesn't matter since you aren't ordering anything. You paid for a seat and time. What Kaze, Chef Sean and the crew does with that time is make sure that you understand you're in well seasoned hands. So as with all omakase experiences, sit back, and allow them to take care of you while you sit back and just enjoy your time. We arrived to a storefront without any signage, yet had a young woman standing outside ready to greet us. It was a great way to build the intrigue of the experience to come. Once inside we sat in a small room with oversized couches and the hostess offered a sake or non-alcoholic sparkling wine for starters. There were a total of 12 of us to be seated. Looking around the room of strangers I was a bit disappointed by the dress attire of those dining with us. One woman wore a muscle shirt and worn joggers and a few of the men were in shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops. That diminished the atmosphere and idea of fine dining. Upon taking our seats we had menus that seemed to be folded and torn verses nicely cut down the center, and name cards with our names hand printed. I only mention this, as a simple way to continue the upscale experience is to ensure the presentation is impeccable. Printing names in a nice font on the computer and using a paper cutter aligns with the expected experience. The staff were all 5 star. Attentive, fun, and busy making dinner in front of us. The food was the next, off, experience. The Dashi was delicious as was the ceviche bite. My first bite of nigiri I pulled a bone out of my mouth, a few other pieces, the outside skin or membrane skin was so chewing you couldn't eat it. The person next to me mentioned this as well. The porridge was tasty, a bit too sweet for my liking, and you could not taste nor smell the truffle on it. I recommend saki with your meal as it really does complement the meal, but after several glasses we should have just bought a bottle for the cost of the per glass up-charge. Our favorite bites were the toro and Wagu, simply melt in your mouth. When it was time to pay, we were running tight with the next group and we were all told, politely, to leave, which was a bit abrupt. We started late waiting for guest to arrive. Which most places we have been simply say, "this is when we start and you will forgo portions of your meal if you are late." We have experienced fine dining restaurants all over the world. I was a bit disappointed that the cost of our meal and drinks did not match the atmosphere or refinement I was expecting. I'm a bit disappointed in the patronage that doesn't realize they should dress-up when going out to a nice dinner. I would encourage the restaurant to have an expected dress code, refine their presentation papers, and be mindful on the eating experience of chewy pieces and bones. Overall, I recommend this place wholeheartedly, it was still a delightful night out. read more
