My daughter and I decided to try this place since it is right by where we live. We got there about 8 on saturday night. There were 2 people at the sushi bar and only 4 tables were filled. We were seated right away and given menus. We ordered something to drink and then looked over all the things that we were given. They didn't have much of a selection for "specialty" rolls as we have seen at other places. We decided to try three hand rolls without rice: spicy tuna, yellow tail and a spicy salmon. We also order what they called their "special eel roll". There were many servers walking around, but they were ignoring us, so after about 10 minutes we flagged someone down to take our order. I also asked for spicy mayo on the side to go along with what we ordered. They delivered two hand rolls pretty quickly and then the third came out pretty shortly their after. The spicy tuna roll really wasn't spicy and the yellow tail was ok, but not the best I have ever had. My daughter said that the spicy salmon wasn't too bad. I was also surprised that the spicy salmon came with vegetables, but the other two hand rolls came only with some sort of radish sprout. I saw a roll sitting on the sushi bar for about 8 minutes before someone realized that it needed to be served to us. The roll had eel on the inside and avacado on the outside and had eel sauce on it. I had told them to go really light on the rice, which they had not done. My daughter and I each had two pieces and didn't want to eat any more of it. The avacado had no taste and the roll was so bland. Also, whenever I have eaten eel before I have never felt the bones within it. This time I did. When the waiter came by and he asked us if we wanted to have the rest of the roll boxed up we told him no and exactly why. He said that he was sorry that we didn't like it and took it off our bill. I should also mention that, while we were waiting for a our food, a family of four came in and sat down near us. They went over the menu and then left. I will not go back to this place. I will stick with Sumo Sushi here in Newbury Park or with Yamato in Camarillo. Now those places have a wonderful selection and great food. read more

Since this place opened, i've been here once a week, sometimes eat-in, most times stopping for take-out on my way home. Everyone working here is very friendly, and helpful. Sushi chefs are comical and accomodating. The sushi is SUPERB, and the yellowtail is super fresh and BIG. I love it. I will be coming here - well weekly :)... yummmm.. Prices are the same as any other place, you expect to pay alot of money for good sushi. The place is never really busy when I go in and is always clean. Glad this place came to NP!! read more

Food is good to very good, but it looks like one server was doing in/outside service and pick/up by herself and she wasn't very efficient. The service was a disaster. I asked for a fork and soy sauce early on. I wanted to add the soy sauce to the soup but I ate the soup before it arrived. She served the salad and I still didn't have a fork and it sat there and soaked up the dressing and right after that the hot food arrived so the salad was eaten last and soggy so I couldn't finish it. I never did get the rice that was supposed to come with the meal and was charged full price. No tip was given - first time I didn't give a tip. Shame on them - hire someone and pay a fair wage. read more

Great Sushi! Fresh, good portions, nice presentation. The rolls are awesome, but I really like the sashimi. The quality of the fish is over the top, too. I've had no better, even in Tokyo. The service was quite good too, but then again the place was not at all busy. Attention to detail, quick with pleasant attitudes, add up to a righteous tip! Prices are OK, I've paid more for less. Having a new sushi bar in Newbury Park is a breath of fresh air. The decor and atmosphere are unpretentious, uncluttered and roomy. I plan on being a regular here! read more

At first glance, you probably won't feel like this is a 4-5 star Yelp sushi joint. The atmosphere is probably a C+ at best....but in LA, you can never judge a sushi place by the environment...some of the best sushi comes from very average strip mall locations...that holds true for Tomodachi. We ordered some cold Sake and the Yellowtail w/ jalapeno for our starter (garnished with a little cilantro). It was probably my favorite of the evening. For our main, we ordered some Toro & Blue fin Tuna sashimi, along with the Tomodachi roll. The blue fin came first, and was fabulous...then came the toro...we realized why the blue fin came first...the toro is so good that you can't go back to traditional tuna after the delicious toro. The Tomodachi roll was actually my wife's favorite item of the night. It is a tempura shrimp roll w/ crab and spicy tune on the outside roll. Honestly, it was one of the better rolls I've eaten in a while. Net, Tomodachi has some great food. Would love to see a little upgrade in the decor, but the food is pretty damn good! read more

Oh it was soooo good until tonight. I think they had more people in there than I have ever seen and man, were they drowning. I think they actually dont have a front of house manager and if they are going to get popular they better get on it! It's always been fine, and empty even on friday nights, but tonight they were at about 65% capacity and nothing was well timed and no one was there to care. it was a bummer, dudes. that being said, i ahd the best salmon skin hand roll of my life there a few weeks prior. read more

ate here with my parents in a booth yesterday. i grew up in NP but haven't lived in the area for over 20 years. my parents love this place but when i first looked at yelp, i was hesitant. not sure why this place isn't rated higher. i thought the sushi and sashimi was great. my 9 year old only eats steak with no sauce and they accommodated a beef territaki appetizer with sauce on the side and a bowl of rice. my personal test of a sushi place is the rice, no overuse of mayo, and the uni. i'd say everything here passed. nothing disappoints me more than a sushi place that overuses mayo to mask the flavor of unfresh fish and that wasn't the case here. the sushi bar was full by the time we left, there were only 2 waitresses and the manager but every time we needed something, it wasn't hard to get their attention. we ordered a roll and there was tobiko (wasabi infused) on top as a garnish. tobiko is one of my favorites so i asked them for it as a 2 piece sushi order, which they also accommodated. very nice. the amaebi was fresh. this place was all i could ask for and it was affordable. Gonna be honest, chose this place because of the restaurant.com gift certificate we had. Overall good place to get sushi, esp at lunch. Place: Off Wendy in the fresh and easy plaza, place is clean, have a nice sushi bar. Service: Friendly and attentive but a little slow coming out with the sushi, dunno if they were short staffed the two times I was there but there would be significant lag time between us finishing our soup/salad and our actual meals arriving. Food: Love the complimentary hot tea! I think the lunch special options are a great deal, either the hand rolls or the sushi deal or the combos. Fish is I would say above average but not the best I've had. With our restaurant.com deal I think prices were pretty fair but don't know if I would visit without one (especially at dinner). read more

The service here is so bad, it redefines bad: When we went on a Sunday night, there were a total of 7 tables with people at them, and it took near 45 minutes to get water and hot tea. One of us had to get up and get menus, because the servers couldn't even handle that. I had to ask three times before they brought us more tea and water. At one point, one whole section of the restaurant was empty, and a waiter was over there futzing with a table instead of attending to any of the three-remaining parties in the other section. The food isn't really all that good, either. Leaving aside the racism of a previous reviewer, I will concur that the sushi is mostly bland. I might also use the word 'uninspired.' The food isn't horrible, but it just isn't good. On balance, even if someone offered to pay their exorbitant prices for my meal, I don't think it would be worth my time. read more

Returned for another Monday visit last night. Everything was fine except they had a different sushi chef who's expertise is somewhere else. While taste was fine all our rolls fell apart. I roll better at home and I've done it all of 3 times in my life. I, like many reviewers am very sensitive to the odor in Sushi joints. After two visits, no issues here. read more

Went yesterday and had a fantastic time. All the staff were friendly and the food was great. Unfortunate that they seemed a little overworked because of the lack of staff and hiring crisis at the moment. Drove here from Camarillo based on Yelp reviews...not again! The atmosphere was nice however the service and food were not impressive. Waited more than 20 minutes for the miso soup which was substandard. When my boyfriend and I finally got our main course, the portions were small and looked less than appetizing. All of the waitstaff seemed clueless except for one, who also seemed to be the only one working. We will not return here. read more

I used to go to the one in Westlake all the time, but I actually think I like the NP location better. Plus, the prices are better. The salmon sashimi is really good, as is the yellowtail with yuzu sauce. Order the toro if they have it! The restaurant is always empty, so if you're planning on dining in, expect attentive service. Is SUMO packed as usual? What if I were to tell you that Tomodachi's sushi is just as good, and there are plenty of seats available right now? Seriously, we NEVER wait at Sumo anymore now that we have tried this place 8 times. I feel safe telling you that if you want some good sushi this place is a WIN. Less trendy and hip, but more seats. I have had one very bad time there, but it was one of those nights, that's all. I've been back multiple times and things have been fine. That being said, I don't go out on busy nights which is when the front of house seemed to crash, and I've never had any issues during the week. I cant really report too much on the fare aside from the wonderful sushi, I will leave that to more experienced diners. My favorite place for lunch too, and never a wait. read more

Like other reviewers, we find the quality of the fish varies slightly. We find the fish is freshest on Friday and Saturday nights. My favorite is the 911 roll and of course we love the Tomodachi roll. Our son's favorite roll is the Red Dragon. Our favorite fish are: Salmon, Albacore, and Yellowtail. We order Miso soup and edamame, which are a great beginning to the meal. We notice that when we order take out, the portions are smaller. The other aspect of this restaurant that varies is the service. Lately however, we've received great service, fast and attentive. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to come to this restaurant with my boyfriend. Sushi really does melts in my mouth! definitely try the live shrimp one SOOO good! My favorite dishes are Yellow tail with jalapeno, spicy tuna biscuits, spicy tuna hand rolls, red snapper sushi, albacore delight, etc. As others say, I prefer sashimi /sushi over rolls. They use real FRESH/QUALITY fish that makes everything tastes so good! The price is reasonable but I tend to go during HAPPY HOUR to eat more food with my limited budget for eating out with my boyfriend. They recently opened up the oyster bar! and mann they have really good oysters. Everything was dollar each. I guess they are trying out new things here and I like the fact that oyster is pretty cheap and taste amazing! domosan is the owner and he is pretty friendly and funny. The only reason I gave them 3 stars is because of the service. We saw 2 tables leave because service was so slow. It wasn't bad for us since we weren't a hurry. We have been here twice. Once on New year's Eve because we decided to go to dinner at the very last minute and then a week ago. Service was slow both times and the place wasn't very busy. I think they only had 1 waitress. Again neither time we were in a hurry so it didn't really matter to us. The yellowtail jalepeno sashimi was good. We have had the same dish at Nobu in Malibu and it was just as good. The rest of the dishes are par for the course as you would find in any sushi restaurant. The best deals are the combo meals. Chicken teriyaki was good, standard but good. Chicken wasn't overcooked. All in all it was bad food but it wasn't anything special either. For a place that's within walking distance of our house it's worth it. read more

We've only eaten here when Chef Satoshi is working. His skills are on point and he always serves the freshest fish. I wouldn't expect anything less from someone who trained under Nobu Matsuhisa. Sheila and I went here for lunch yesterday to celebrate her 10 year anniversary with the company. I have never been here before, and had high hopes. The meal did not disappoint. We both had the combo lunch with chicken teriyaki and California roll, and although that sounds to be a pretty basic no fail meal, everything was very tasty. The chicken was moist and the sauce full of flavor. The roll was packed with crab and plenty of wasabe was offered for a good bite. Needless to say we were both very satisfied. I definitely want to come back here for dinner and sample their sake. The only reason, I wouldn't give this place 5 stars is the service was a bit slow. Don't know if that's because the kitchen staff was not on the ball, but the restaurant was not crowded and our server could have been a bit more attentive. A bunch of co-workers were spewing how great Tomodachi was and that I should try it. My husband and I already have a local sushi bar that we frequent but figured we'd give it a try. Our server Ricky was great. We ordered several different types of dishes to get a good feel for the place. We ordered the albacore delight, the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi, the standard salmon and halibut sushi, the tofu salad and an order of curry The yellowtail was tasty, but overall the sushi and the rolls were over sauced. The rice was falling apart and it felt like the whole dish was just drenched. The curry and the tofu salad were good, but the salad also had just two blocks of tofu in it. The quality of the sushi was decent, but I'd have to say I would go back to my regular sushi joint for fish. We'll go again to just to try more items from their menu such as the bulgogi, ramen, and udon options. read more

The only reason this place isn't getting a one is because the staff was really understanding about me being super scared to eat the rest of the spicy tuna roll. I ordered a lunch special with tempura and a spicy tuna roll. The vegetable tempura, salad, etc was all ok. I grabbed a piece of spicy tuna roll dipped it into the soy sauce and immediate startedly chewing. Well it took me about 10 seconds to realize I was actually tasting super gross fishy/moldy barf taste once I got past the spicy flavor. Needless to say I didn't eat the rest of the roll. Then I noticed the shrimp tempura had a weird moldy earth flavor to it too. So I ate the rest of the rice figuring I was ok. The waiter (this blonde VERY CALIFORNIA-woah DUDE) took the spicy tuna off and apologized. Which made me feel better cause I NEVER ask to have things taken off or send stuff back. This is the place to go if you want an excellent, fresh, soft sushi served properly. It is not cheap. If you can afford it, there is no more need to search. Place is clean and well maintained. Staff could be busy sometimes, so on busy nights just be patient. The fish is worth it. Tomo-san knows how to choose the best fish. BJ knows how to prepare it and bring the taste out. First of all, one of the reasons we went to this one in Newbury Park is because of the $25 coupon we had from restaurants.com. The salmon sushi was much better than I thought it would be, but I have to say that I can't figure out why some of these sushi places put a wedge of lemon next to raw fish. Don't they realize that acid COOKS the fish? It's a no no in my book and I would expect a good, reputable sushi restaurant would know not to do this. The food was mediocre; hence the 3 stars. The service would be rated at 2 stars. We had to wait around to get things like napkins, check, etc. The people were very nice, but service could use more improvement. This was our first time here and we were just in time for Happy Hour. Great deals on apps, sushi rolls, and drinks. Everything tasted excellent and was all priced at very reasonable prices. My family and I eat here often and my wife and daughter just love it! I like it as well, the food always fresh, always clean inside and very friendly service. My favorite is their Filet Mignon, although they seem to be out of the Filet often, but it is more of a sushi place. My wife and daughter just love the Cod fish dinner and I have to say I love it as well, it is definitely the freshest, tastiest fish I have had at a restaurant and highly recommend it. This is definitely worth a visit, it's worth the price and the food is fresh, we like to go around 5:00ish as it seems quiet and not very crowded. read more
