The service is consistently mediocre with the undertone of an indifferent attitude from the staff. The sushi is decent so I really wanted this place to work but during our last and final visit they took 50 minutes to serve California Rolls! After asking the server several times about the food I finally got up and another server found them sitting on the table behind the wall. The remainder of the sushi order wasn't even done until almost one hour after we ordered it. It wasn't even busy! The delay was met by the staff (servers and sushi chefs) with no apologies and no apparent concern. When we said we were leaving they tried to charge us for the sushi we never got. As a former server and bartender I have never given a zero tip before but that has now changed. The poor service is an obvious theme throughout the reviews and absolutely unacceptable in my opinion. A house cleaning of the staff is needed to turn this place around and earn any return visit from my family. read more

My fiancee and I are huge sushi buffs and we just love this place. Amazing service, amazing food, and amazing presentation. The Yellow-tail Jalapeno Sashimi is mouth-melting with the perfect amount of spice. The Tomodachi Roll is a perfect combo of crab, shrimp tempura, and spicy tuna. Yum! My favorite sushi in the conejo valley. Great food I always end up with sashimi and sushi. Prices are reasonable. Quality is top notch. You have to try the spicy tuna on rice cake. My favorite. We eat here quite frequently and have been sitting for 15 minutes and not one single person has been to our table. It is literally like we are invisible. Generous portions, delicious preparation [the aji and hamachi were sublime], artistic presentation [almost too pretty to eat!] and reasonable price point. Living at the beach, I usually dine in Santa Monica/West LA, but Tomodachi in Newbury Park will have me making the drive here again and again to enjoy their delectable sushi. Went here for lunch with a party of six - all work colleagues. We ordered almost $200 worth of food, so we were a big part of their lunch business that day. Unfortunately, the dining experience could've been better. What ruined it for us was this single white male server who made unnecessary remarks whenever he delivered our food. He didn't refill any of our drinks until we were finished, and every plate came out late. Several times I was tempted to walk over to the sushi bar and grab our plates. We stopped by this place since we were craving sushi and it was super close to our hotel. This place was very good especially since we haven't found many places that compared to we had in Japan. We say at the sushi bar and had Nobu as our sushi chef. He was taking care of 7 customers at once and very quick with his hands in preparing the sushi. He was very polite and answered whatever questions we had. Definitely coming back if I am visiting the area. read more

I have eaten here 3 or 4 times and the food is delicious and the service has been good, although I have noticed that at times they are a bit understaffed. I hardly ever write reviews, but felt compelled to do so tonight. I am very disappointed, because I actually really love the sushi at Tomodachi. The service I received tonight was beyond horrible, that I will probably never step foot in there again. Fortunately, I can go to the one in Westlake, if I have a craving for some of my favorite rolls. I wanted to order some take out tonight. I called the restaurant at 5:45 pm. The phone rang several times, then went into a voice mail. I thought that was really strange that no one picked up. I tried a few more times, but the same thing happened. I then stopped by the restaurant to put in the order, and planned on coming back after running an errand. I walked in to the restaurant. There was a woman near the check in area, she barely acknowledged me. I walked over to her and said that I would like to get a take out order. She said ( in very broken English), ok, one minute. I waited for a while, she went off and was helping other customers, and completely ignoring me. Another waiter came out, but same thing, no eye contact, and no acknowledgement. I was standing near a table where a woman and her husband were also waiting to just get a menu! She said they had been waiting for 15 minutes to get a menu....crazy! By the way, it was not that busy in there. I then went over to the woman who I originally spoke with, and asked her politely if I could go to the sushi bar and put my to go order in there. She really didn't understand what I was saying, so she went over to a waiter who did speak English. The next thing that happened, absolutely shocked me! The guy came over to me, and asked if I needed something. I said, I would just like to place a take out order. He then asked me ( in a very nasty voice, by the way), if I had called earlier????? I said, "yes", but no one answered. I then said, I'm not sure where you are going with this? He said that I needed to go sit down and wait? Hmm? I told him that I am not looking to sit and eat her, but would merely like to place an order for 2 rolls....that's it! He said, that I would have to wait an hour????? WTH??? I said to him, "Are you kidding me?" This is a joke right? Why would I have to wait an hour to place a take out order? He then proceeded to be very nasty again, so I walked away. As I was about to walk out of the restaurant, the woman, who had been waiting for the menu, stopped me and asked what happened. I proceeded to tell her in a loud voice, so everyone in the restaurant could hear. The rude waiter came over to me, and said, "What's the problem?" I said the problem is that the service is horrible here, always has been, but I keep coming back because I like the food, but tonight sealed the deal, and I will never come back again. He then said, "Oh fine, i'll take your order now!". I said, don't bother, I have no interest in getting any food from here tonight, after the way I was treated!". I then walked out. Such a shame, food is good, but service is beyond atrocious. We have been giving them the benefit of the doubt for years, but every time we go in there, we ask ourselves, why we subject ourselves to this? read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. The restaurant was half full at dinner time on a Friday night and the food took 45 mins to arrive to the table. The sushi bar gets served first even though the customers arrive 20 minutes after us. You have to ask for refills. Clearly no manager on duty. The food was mediocre at best. Been a frequent customer at this restaurant. Have even warned the manager when a waitress turned away customers because they were short handed and told customers that the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour. Well, in mid September we had visited the restaurant on four different dates in a period of 10 days. All take outs. We had started to order chirashi sushi and noticed it comes in different size containers. Full size square containers (styrofoam) or small rectangular container (styrofoam). When I asked the waitress, she indicated that "there is no standard size container" for this meal. Same price...different portions. Also, soup comes with the meal if the waiter/waitress remembers. Left several messages for the manager but no return calls from him. Very bad customer service. This would not happen back in Japan. Shame on you!! read more

BEST SUSHI IN VENTURA COUNTY!!! I don't usually give reviews, and never after just one visit. I just finished my 3rd visit here and each time it was a 10 out of 10! Very clean, incredibly fresh, and the absolute best sushi I have EVER had. Real sushi chefs, rather than some guy that was flipping burgers the week prior. I have had sushi all over the US and I can honestly say, this was by far my best experience. Tons of locals and "regulars" raving about the consistency.
