First let me tell you that words cannot describe the dinner experience my group had at Tomo Sushi. Take this review, and multiply it 100 times and you will get closer to what you can expect from this "hidden gem" @Kat L referenced. For the last several years, I have only ordered Omakase from any sushi restaurant I visited. Since reading The Story of Sushi by Trevor Corson, I also stopped using soy sauce when eating omakase. While we waited for our table, I asked the owner if Omakase was an option. His eyes lighted up and said he would make it work on this busy night. The owner and our waitress came to our table and asked the three of us if there were any allergies or things that we would not eat. We answered no to both and the smiles on their faces knowing that the sky was the limit was clear. Let me be clear, this was the most impressive Omakase experience my wife an I have ever had. Our orders came in even numbers for our group, so we each got an equal bite of each item. Every dish that was brought was elaborately explained with an emphasis that we should not be using soy sauce! Each bite and piece was individually seasoned. Our first course was a blue fin tuna sashimi. This was followed by an order of crab cakes. We then experienced a custom order of scallop sashimi with fresh wasabi. Next came a small plate of house pickled ginger and a large platter of nagiri with 5 different fish. We were told which piece to start with, and in which order to eat them. Pausing in between for ginger to clean the pallet. This was nor ordinary ginger. This was a heavenly experience between each bite! Next we had the king salmon nagiri with fried onion sprouts. We then ended with two custom made rolls that came with a side bowl of a specially made chili oil for dipping. We were told no less than 7 times, that the oil was not to be used in excess and to be careful. It was the perfect pairing with these last rolls. You know you had a truly Omakase experience when the bill comes out and each line was a generic "1 fish order", "1 market fish" and "3 custom fish" type descriptions! The overall personalized service and truly over the top creativity at Tomo sets them apart from every sushi place I've eaten. I will now wonder the earth trying to find the next sushi mecca that can compare to this Austin Gem. read more

This is our favorite sushi place in Austin. It is the perfect combination of good price and great quality. The fresh wasabi is awesome on everything we've tried it with and I highly recommend. Probably my favorite thing about this place is that the spicy rolls aren't simply a roll with spicy tuna or salmon. Its nice to have spicy options without the restaurant getting rid of their subpar tuna and salmon by chopping it up with something spicy. And they have a lot of spicy options. They also have a good atmosphere, with employees that all seem happy to be working there. If you are looking for a place that is better than average, but far less expensive that Uche, this place should be your jam. read more

Tomo is a long time favorite. I've been coming here since about 2007/2008. Every single time the quality is top notch, staff is fun and fast, and the ambiance is always on point. Steve and Tina are incredible and have nailed every aspect of a restaurant that keeps you satisfied but wanting more. They always have specials and you really can't go wrong with anything. I always get the screaming orgasm , ex girlfriend, and several sashimi options. Today I had the bluefin tuna in this outstanding jalapeño wasabis sauce that we asked for extra You can't go wrong with Tomo! Will forever be one of my all time favorite restaurants! We have been a few times and the food and service are top notch. We love to order the Mexican roll, the Who's Your Daddy, Double D, and the Toro. We usually start off with some seaweed salad, rock shrimp tempura, calamari, and Gyoza. Everything is delicious and we love to wash it all down with some thirst quenching Nigori sake. I haven't been back here in years! My tummy was happy I did, but my bill was not :) There were 3 of us so we were able to order lots of items and most were good, some were delicious! Fish was fresh, especially the scallop nigiri and the yellowtail they had on special that day, it was soooo buttery good. I forgot they had the grilled whole squid there, mmm.. the charred taste is the best! Salmon skin handroll, very good and good portion. We also had the black bass, spicy garlic sashimi, and some rolls, no complaints at all! Service was borderline slow, but the servers were great! I love this place! I didn't actually read any reviews on yelp before we went. This place was highly recommended by one of my friends. Just to let you know prices do reflect quality but the quality of the seafood was great. Grilled whole squid - very yummy lightly seasoned enough where I didn't even have to dip it in their sauce. I was surprised on the size, definitely a good sized squid. Tempura sweet potato - not my favorite style of fried tempura but still had good crunch. It didn't come with very much though, but I think on the menu it tells you how many pieces an order comes with so I knew what to expect. Uni - oh so delicious! I haven't been to Uchi in a while (I had uni there and loved it) but I think I might even like Tomo's quality even better. Not too much seafood flavor but perfect amount of ocean flavor and very creamy. Benito - I've never had this so I can't compare it to others, but it seemed very good quality. My Fuji Roll - I noticed I've started veering away from ordering sushi rolls lately but I really wanted to try the soft shell crab and the escolar so this roll seemed a good choice that combined the two. It was delicious and I would definitely order it again. They don't really do happy hour....except on Thursdays they do half of sake for ladies night! read more

Came here to check out what the hype was all about. I think it is overhyped. The restaurant itself is fairly small and also has a sushi bar counter. We were lucky to be seated on a Saturday night without a reservation. Service was quite slow and it took a while for our sushi and rolls to come out. The tempura soft shelled crab appetizer was great and came with the ponzu sauce. The sushi and sashimi selection seemed fairly limited compared to most other sushi restaurants. The server asked us if we would like to make it "tomodachi style" for the salmon and tuna sushi, which is added sauces and toppings to each piece, rather than just the standard sushi. There is a good variety of rolls; the rolls are about 8 pieces each. The "2 beers" roll came with habanero sauce and is very very spicy, so beware! Overall, I think the sushi and rolls are about average and not as good as other sushi places in town. read more

This place is so good that I ate here two nights in a row. Not only does the fish taste so fresh but very flavorful! I ordered the negitoro, salmon, negihama, and rainbow rolls. The negitoro and salmon rolls were my favorite. The rainbow roll was my least favorite because I didn't think that their soft shell crab meat was flavorful. TOMO I've been visiting Tomo for several years off and on with the hubby for date nights and with the visiting college kiddo. Most recently with the man kid and his girlfriend. It was her first time Tomo'in so we did it big... quail egg shooters, Japanese beers and a couple bottles of Pinot... ordered all the 'go to starters... fresh sashimi and all the infamous rolls" Of course it was a Thursday evening around 7pm so we had a 20-30 minute wait... no issues, people were coming and going and the place was packed as usual.. servers were working hard and at the same time visiting and casually chatting with the customers... the guys behind the sushi bar are super chill and never stressed... the main chef comes out and chats with the guests.... we got our table and our server was quick to get us waters and our drink order.... The fish is always fresh and the fresh wasabi always hits the spot..... My only complaint is.... the dirty dish rags... they reuse and reuse to wipe the tables and I get a hint of the smell... like the wet laundry you forgot in the wash.. I call it the swamp smell... gets me every time.... I will be back and I get it... busy busy but I don't think this should become the norm... don't let cleanliness slide for revenue... And when I took my first sip of wine, I smelled the dirty dish towel smell on the rim... I was with my son and girlfriend and wanted to have a good night so I didn't say anything but if my husband would've been on board... he would've sent the bottle back and got new fresh glasses.. I casually got my napkin wet and wiped my rim discretely and carried on.... these are minor things when you're out drinking but could ruin a first date for sure..... I dropped about $300 for 3 people on a casual Thursday so expected a tad more out of Tomo.... but I will be back.... read more

Tomo is a hidden gem and the BEST sushi in Austin. It's actually some of the best sushi I have ever had. There is almost always a wait but it is totally worth grabbing a Kirin or a glass of wine and waiting. The restaurant is small and quaint. Tomo is very clean and well maintained. The staff is super friendly, Ask to sit in Susannah section she is a fantastic waitress. The sushi chefs are highly trained and can make excellent recommendations. Tomo is one of the only sushi restaurants in Austin that I have found Pure fresh wasabi, so make sure to add that on and order the sashimi bombs!!! They have outstanding options for rolls, sashimi, hot rocks, and appetizers. I personally love the Sashimi dinner, the ex girlfriend roll, the xXx, the scallop sashimi is excellent and the salmon topped with flash fried sprouts truffle oil and fresh wasabi!! We ordered a large variety of rolls and nigiri and honestly I didn't like any of it. The taste of the fish was off on every roll. I hope I caught Tomodachi Sushi on an off day because it has the potential to be a great neighborhood sushi restaurant! I ordered the sushi dinner - 8 pieces of sushi (chef's choice) and spicy tuna roll. The sushi rice was so dry and crumbly and lacked seasoning. The fish seemed fresh but the pieces were on the thinner side, and honestly just hard to enjoy in the context of the dry crumbly rice. The ambience was nice -- right amount of lighting and great music. Option to sit at a booth, table, or the bar. Would recommend getting a reservation as the small restaurant was busy on a Friday evening. Again, I really hope I caught the restaurant on a bad day! Our friends who live in Austin come here once a week! They took us here while we visited and now we finally know why. The restaurant is pretty small. So there might be a 45 min wait. The Tomo special rolls are really good! The Ex-girlfriend was my favorite roll. It has crab, avocado, spicy tuna with halibut tempura, and spicy mayo. Make sure you order the Sushi Bomb. The fresh wasabi is so good. It's four different pieces of fish with fresh wasabi on top. Your nose burns for a couple of seconds, but feels so good. It's addicting. Normally 1 piece is stronger than the rest, but you don't know which one! If you love sushi and you're in Austin. This is a must visit. read more
